At the same time, several new networking and radio technologies (e.g., dynamic spectrum access, UWB) are emerging to address the performance limitations of existing technologies and make wireless networking more ubiquitous. Realistic evaluation of such a diverse set of technologies and their mutual interactions will play a major role in identifying the key performance bottlenecks, thus shaping future advances in wireless technology. The importance of testbed-based evaluation of wireless network protocols/applications as well as characterization of real-world aspects using traces from operational networks is gaining wider recognition in the mobile and wireless networking research community. This workshop intends to bring together researchers working in the broad area of experimental wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of wireless networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved challenges in this area. We are seeking original, previously unpublished papers addressing experimental wireless networking issues. All submissions will be judged by their technical merit and relevance to the workshop, based on a thorough review process by the Technical Program Committee. Apart from regular paper presentations, the workshop program will include an interactive session with demos and posters. We welcome demonstrations of novel wireless network testbed capabilities and measurement results. The posters may describe work in progress and offers an excellent opportunity for feedback and discussions on early research. These nodes are deeply embedded into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce, yet prototypic implementations are getting more common, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms such as smartphones, which allow for extending dedicated sensor networks. Experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and mechanisms for sensor networks. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. Due to its very wide bandwidth, as well as low transmit power, UWB is a serious contender for a number of applications including remote monitoring of both vital signs (temperature, pulse oximetry, etc.) as well as other medically significant data, such as ECG and EMG. The wide bandwidth of UWB signals also makes high-resolution ranging and localization possible, particularly in indoor areas, thereby enabling indoor tracking solutions for disabled patients and children in hospitals. UWB also holds promise for medical implant applications, such as capsule endoscopy, and may even be an enabler of next-generation micro-robotic surgery applications. The first of these applications would benefit from the very high bandwidth of UWB signals in transmission of very high resolution images and video of human body organs, and the second would benefit from the high ranging and localization accuracy provided by UWB signaling. The primary goal of this workshop is to explore the state of the art in the development of UWB technology for body area networking, ranging from fundamental physical layer concepts, such as channel modeling and system architecture, to development of prototypes and clinical trials. Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft für Informatik 16.9. - 21.9.2012 TU Braunschweig www.informatik2012.de <http://www.informatik2012.de> =========================================================== MOTIVATION UND ZIELSETZUNG =========================================================== Die Energiewende mit dem zunehmenden Umstieg von den klassischen Energieträgern Kohle, Öl, Gas und Nuklearbrennstoff auf erneuerbare Energien wie Windkraft, Solarenergie, Wasserkraft, Biomasse und Wasserstoff mit z.T. stark volatiler Charakteristik stellt grundsätzlich neue Heraus- forderungen an Technik und Management von elektrischen Energienetzen, d.h. an eine intelligente Steuerung der Einspeisung, Verteilung und Nutzung elektrischer Energie einschließlich aller damit verbundenen betrieblichen, ökonomischen und rechtlichen Aspekte. Zur Gestaltung dieses sog. "Smart Grid" ist das interdisziplinäre Zusammenwirken von Energietechnik, Informationstechnik, Informatik, Betriebswirtschaft und Recht erforderlich. Die gegenwärtig vorherrschenden Energiequellen sind durch die Nutzung von fossilen und nuklearen Brennstoffen gekennzeichnet, welche nicht nachhaltig zur Verfügung stehen, zum "CO2-Footprint" klimaschädlich beitragen bzw. durch die ungelösten Aufgaben zur Entsorgung von langlebigen Abfallprodukten gesellschaftlich nicht mehr akzeptabel sind. Sie hatten den Vorteil, dass die Standorte der Erzeugung und des Verbrauchs ohne überlange Transportwege aneinander angepasst, eine stetige Grundlast bereitgestellt und Spitzenlasten durch Gas-, Öl- und Pumpspeicher- Kraftwerke bedarfsgerecht abgedeckt werden konnten. Dem gegenüber erfordern die zeitlich stark schwankend zur Verfügung stehenden Energieträger wie Sonne und Wind eine flexible Anpassung des Verbrauchs sowie Energiespeichertechniken, welche heutzutage technisch nur unbefriedigend und auch nicht im erforderlichen Umfang vorhanden sind. Hieraus resultieren die Anforderungen an die Energienetze der Zukunft, welche weit über die heute angewandten Verfahren hinausgehen und die Bereitstellung, den Transport und die Nutzung der Energie in einem intelligent gesteuerten Netz, dem sog. "Smart Grid", miteinander verbinden. Ziel des Workshops ist insbesondere die Diskussion von Querschnittsfragen zwischen der elektrischen Energietechnik, Steuerungs- und Regelungstechnik, Informationstechnik und Informatik, um Methoden, Konzepte und Erfahrungen für komplexe Systeme kooperativ nutzen zu können bzw. mit neuen Lösungen zur Innovation beizutragen. This development in telecommunications opens doors to many sophisticated complex systems, e.g. social networks, smart grids, vehicular networks and sensor networks, that previously were not feasible. Graph theory is among the most widely used tools for modeling and analyzing the many types of interactions, relations and dynamics in these systems. Many problems of practical interest can be represented by graphs. The use of graph theory in vehicular networks, or more broadly highly dynamic networks, is of particular interest. The complex interactions among vehicles, between vehicles and road-side infrastructure, combined with the high mobility of vehicles and fast changing topology, present some unique challenges in network modeling and performance analysis, network design, resource management and communication protocol design. This special section aims to provide recent advances in graph theory that are applicable to highly dynamic networks, particularly vehicular networks, identify challenges in the area and present possible solutions, and furthermore to unveil the significant potential of graph theory in the domain of vehicular networks. Traffic on our telecommunication networks has grown exponentially in the last decade. Many of the services and applications that exist now were not even imagined a few years ago. Though we can extrapolate some trends and make educated guesses, we cannot predict exactly what lies ahead. Networks that are designed with change in mind will be more robust to disruption caused by growing demands and changing user patterns and yet-unimagined applications. The risks associated with investment in these kinds of networks will be lower as they will be more durable and scalable. Networks that are designed with change in mind will make effective use of resources (e.g. spectrum, bandwidth, power, processing capabilities, cooling capabilities etc.) and ensure a sustainable future. The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers and technologists from academia and industry to explore the applications of artificial intelligence to the most pertinent technical challenges in telecommunications and sensor networks. FORMAT Workshop participation will be by invitation only. If you would like to participate, submit either a full paper of no more than 6 pages (or 6,000 words); a position statement, short paper, or problem instance (at most 3 pages or 3,000 words); or a position statement (1 page). Short papers may address an important problem for further research or describe a practical problem or an interesting lesson learned. In addition, we solicit proposals for short demonstrations (at most 3 pages with demonstrations taking at most 15 minutes). All submissions should conform to ECAI’s formatting guidelines, to be available soon on the conference website. SCOPE We especially welcome papers that combine artificial intelligence and telecommunications and sensor networks.
