============================================================================
====
The Internet of Things (IoT) opens the door to new technological
opportunities for a wide range of applications that cover e-health, smart
homes and automation, e-commerce, location-based services, smart vehicles,
fleet management and remote system monitoring. However, at the same time as
these technological opportunities grow so does the threat surface for
potential adversaries targeting at various, interconnected ICT systems and
consequently at ICT-dependent critical systems, such as SCADA (Supervisory
Control and Data Acquisition Systems) systems. At this point, attackers
could take advantage from the incorporation of the paradigm to exploit new
security gaps, probably caused by unforeseen interoperability and
adaptability problems.
Indeed, the deployment of Internet-enabled embedded devices that are
distributed over major critical domains, may create indirect and non-obvious
inter-connections with the underlying Critical Infrastructures (CIs).
Examples of such inter-connected systems may include traffic monitoring and
control systems communicating with smart vehicles, energy related systems
communicating with smart homes and smart meters, monitoring systems
connected with autonomous sensors in nuclear plants, power grids and body
area networks. There is a need to further explore the security issues
related to IoT technologies to assure the resilience of CIs against advanced
IoT-based attacks. The goal of this special issue is therefore to address
the diverse security challenges and related to IoT-enabled CIs (IoT-CIs) and
their resilience to advanced threats.
Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* Security analysis and requirements in the coupling of IoT-CIs
* Vulnerabilities, threat models and risk management in IoT-CIs
* Reference architectures for the secure coupling of IoT in CI scenarios
* Embedded security for mobile devices and BYOD
* Network-layer attacks and defense mechanisms between IoT devices and CIs
* Key management and access control in IoT-CIs
* Resilience models for advanced threats in IoT-CIs
* Advanced and lightweight awareness models for large IoT-CIs
* Privacy and location privacy for IoT-CIs

Datum: Thu, 16 Aug 2018 16:40:45 +0100
Von: Michael Breza <mjb04(a)doc.ic.ac.uk>
An: failsafe-workshop(a)imperial.ac.uk
Hello,
**** SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO: 24th of AUGUST ****
FAILSAFE 2018 Call For Papers
The Second ACM International Workshop on the Engineering of Reliable,
Robust,
and Secure Embedded Wireless Sensing Systems
http://wp.doc.ic.ac.uk/failsafe/
The FAILSAFE workshop will provide a forum to discuss tools and
techniques to address the difficulties and challenges of deploying
Embedded Wireless Sensor Systems (EWSS) in the wild, and aim to produce
reliable, robust systems.
We seek submissions of up to 8 pages describing and presenting data of
problems and failures of experimental efforts, practical experiences,
and industrial and commercial developments in all aspects of sensor
networks, mobile devices, and wireless communication. We solicit work
that discusses real Deployments and ways to engineer them, Security of
EWSS, both ways to engineer security at design time, and approaches to
run time security, and Application resilience including designed
resilience for control systems. We encourage submissions of the above
topics of interest that cover, but are not limited to:
We would also like submissions about any tools, methods, techniques, or
approaches to engineer robust and resilient EWSS. This includes
robustness and resilience faults and failures from the environment,
human error, or malicious activities. Examples include novel simulation
frameworks, the use of formal methods like model checking, design
methodologies, languages that explicitly handle faults and failures,
forms of unit, integration, or run time testing, models to test
performance during faults and failures, and anything else relevant to
this discussion.
We address three main areas.
Deployments and how to design them:
- Testing frameworks, models, simulators, formal methods that deal with
sensor system deployment failures, and can be used to prevent similar
failures of wireless sensor systems. This includes failure of the sensor
systems themselves, or the affect that their failure would have on the
application that uses their data. - Monitoring tools, control systems,
or code update systems for use in sensor system deployments to detect
and diagnose node or system performance issues, failures, or malicious
activity.
- Any account of a real ENSS deployment with an emphasis on any design
tools or methodologies used, and an assessment of the benefit that they
provided.
- Examples of a deployment that was tested, and failed due to unexpected
circumstances. The testing methodology must be presented and discussed,
as well as how it failed to account for the phenomenon that caused the
failure, and a potential solution described.
- Failure and the diagnosis of an actual deployment of mobile apps,
networks and systems. Must include some data and analysis of what caused
the failure.
Secure Design and Operation of EWSS:
- Approaches to address faults and failures caused by malicious activity
aimed at the disruption of the EWSS or the application that uses it.
- Formal models of security attacks.
- Secure by design approaches to EWSS.
- Runtime security or intrusion detection systems for EWSS.
- Any documented example of a real EWSS deployment that either was
attacked by malicious agents, or that deployed security mechanisms, with
a description of what was done.
Resilient and Robust Applications and Control:
- Design methods to create applications or controllers that are
resilient and robust to the loss, delay, or corruption of data from an EWSS.
- Applications of formal methods to design and/or verify resilient and
robust sensor networks.
- Examples or methods to engineer coupled communication and control
systems that are resilient and robust.
- Examples of real deployment using wireless sensors for a controller
with instances of failure or any design methodology used, or any
security considerations taken.

ICCPS 2019 CALL FOR PAPERS
The 10th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems
April 16-18, 2019 in Montreal, Canada, part of CPSWeek 2019
http://iccps.acm.org/2019
====================================================================
Overview: As digital computing and communication become faster, cheaper,
and available in packages that are smaller and use less power, these
capabilities are increasingly embedded in many objects and structures in
the physical environment. Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are physical and
engineered systems whose operations are monitored, coordinated,
controlled, and integrated by computing and communication. Broad CPS
deployment is transforming how we interact with the physical world as
profoundly as the world wide web transformed how we interact with one
another, and further harnessing their capabilities holds the possibility
of enormous societal and economic impact. ACM/IEEE ICCPS is the premier
single-track conference for reporting advances in all CPS aspects,
including theory, tools, applications, systems, test-beds and field
deployments. The conferences focuses on the core science to develop
fundamental principles that underpin the integration of cyber and
physical elements, as well as on the development of technologies, tools,
architectures and infrastructure for building CPS systems, highlighting
the design, implementation, and investigation of CPS applications.
Application domains include (but are not limited to): transportation,
energy, water, agriculture, medical and assistive technology, sensor and
social networks, robotics, smart cities, ecology, and supply-chains.
Among the relevant research areas are security, control, optimization,
machine learning, game theory, mechanism design, mobile and cloud
computing, model-based design, verification, data mining / analytics,
signal processing, and human-in-the-loop shared or supervisory control.
All submissions must be in English. Only original papers that are not
submitted or published in other conferences or journals will be
considered. Manuscripts should have a main body with no more than 10
pages. Up to 2 additional pages of appendices may follow the main body
of the paper, within the same submitted .pdf file. The submissions must
be in the ACM two-column conference style, US Letter (8.5 inch x 11
inch) paper size, and 10pt text font size.

Call for Competitors
4th Dependability Competition at the
Intl. Conf. on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN)
February 25-27, 2019 - Beijing, China
http://ewsn2019.thss.tsinghua.edu.cn/call-for-competitors.html
----------------------------------------------------------------------
!!! DEADLINE EXTENDED !!!
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Following the success of the first three editions, the International
Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks will host also
this year a dependability competition to benchmark the performance
of WSN and IoT communication protocols in harsh RF environments.
******** FORMAT ********
The EWSN 2019 dependability competition will take place remotely and
the final results will be announced during EWSN in Beijing.
Remote preparation phase. After successfully registering to the
conference, accepted contestants will obtain the credentials to
remotely access the competition infrastructure. During the official
preparation phase, all competing teams will have the possibility to
test and optimize their solution for this year's competition scenario.
In particular, contestants will be able to program all nodes in the
competition infrastructure and download their serial output, as well
as the evaluation results. The latter will be published on a
leaderboard that will be visible to all other competing teams.
Final evaluation phase. At the end of the preparation phase, each
team needs to provide one single ihex binary file for each competition
category. During the evaluation phase, this binary file will be used
to extensively benchmark the performance of the competing solution.
Competition abstracts. Each team will have the possibility to publish
a competition abstract as part of the EWSN proceedings that will
appear in the ACM Digital Library. The competition abstracts will
follow the same camera-ready deadline as the EWSN poster abstracts and
are expected to include a description of the competing solution, as well
as preliminary results and lessons learned from the preparation phase.
Poster session. A poster session dedicated to the dependability
competition will take place during the main EWSN conference. All
competing teams must present their solution in the poster session and
will have the possibility to engage in lively discussions with the other
conference attendees.
Awards. The winners of each competition's category will be awarded during
a dedicated plenary session of the main conference. After receiving the
award, the winning teams must hold a plenary short presentation about
their solution, followed by a discussion session.
******** COMPETITION CATEGORIES ********
The EWSN 2019 dependability competition foresees two categories:
Category 1: Data collection for condition monitoring.
In this category, a fixed number of source nodes communicate to a single
destination node over a multi-hop network (i.e., multipoint-to-point
traffic). The destination node collects the data transmitted by all
source nodes and forwards it to a control center for further processing.
Category 2: Dissemination of actuation commands.
In this category, a fixed number of source nodes needs to disseminate
actuation commands to a specific set of destinations nodes in the network
(i.e., point-to-multipoint traffic). Each source node is associated to a
specific set of destinations (at most eight), which will be injected as
input parameter into the firmware under test by the competition
infrastructure.
A detailed description of the competition scenario and evaluation procedure
can be found on:
http://ewsn2019.thss.tsinghua.edu.cn/competition-scenario.html
******** ELIGIBILITY ********
Both academia and industry submissions are encouraged. All wireless
communication protocols used in low-power wireless sensor networks are
welcome, and there is no restriction on the operating system used to
program the sensor nodes. There is also no requirement on the originality
of the competing solutions: the demonstration of good use of well-known
or previously-published protocols is strongly encouraged. The EWSN 2019
dependability competition will take place if at least five teams competing
in the same category respond to this preliminary call for competitors.
******** SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ********
Contestants must submit a short abstract describing their approach by the
competition entry deadline. The abstract should prominently include the
name of all members of the team, as well as their affiliation and contact
information. Detailed information on the formatting requirements and the
submission instructions can be found on:
http://ewsn2019.thss.tsinghua.edu.cn/call-for-competitors.html

Call for Papers
4th ACM/IEEE International Conference on Internet of
Things Design and Implementation (IoTDI'19)
in conjunction with CPSWEEK 2019
April 15-18, 2019 - Montreal, Canada
http://conferences.computer.org/iotdi/2019/
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The ACM/IEEE International Conference on Internet of Things Design and
Implementation (IoTDI) is a premier venue on IoT. To reflect the
interconnection of IoT with both cloud computing and cyber-physical
systems, IoTDI is co-located in even years with IEEE IC2E and in odd
years with CPSWEEK. In 2019, IoTDI will be held for the fourth time,
and will be part of CPSWEEK 2019.
A confluence of technological advances marks the advent of a new era.
World data volume is growing at an unprecedented pace, much of it from
embedded devices. Smart cities are expected to grow, fed by millions
of data points from multitudes of human and physical sources.
Cyber-attacks grow more nefarious, bringing down physical systems.
Social networks are becoming ubiquitous, offering information on
physical things. The separation between cyber, physical, and social
systems is blurring. Collectively, these developments lead to the
emergence of a new field, where the networking and physical realms
meet. It is the field of the Internet of Things (IoT). This conference
is an interdisciplinary forum to discuss challenges, technologies, and
emerging directions in system design and implementation that pertain
to IoT. This conference invites researchers and practitioners from
academia, industry and government, and accepts original, previously
unpublished work on a range of topics related to IoT.
******** TOPICS ********
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Analytic foundations and theory of IoT;
- Reliability, security, timeliness, and robustness in IoT systems;
- Novel protocols and network abstractions;
- Data streaming architectures and machine learning analytics for IoT;
- IoT-motivated cyber-physical and Industrial IoT (IIoT) systems;
- Novel quality requirements and their enforcement mechanisms;
- Cloud back-ends and resource management for IoT applications;
- Edge and fog computing;
- Personal, wearable, and other embedded networked front-ends;
- Social computing and human-in-the-loop issues;
- Applications domains (e.g., smart cities, smart health, smart
buildings, smart transportation);
- Deployment experiences, case studies & lessons learned;
- Evaluation and testbeds.
Accepted papers of particular merit will be invited to submit an
extended version to ACM Transactions on the Internet of Things (TIOT).
