=============================================================
Networked embedded systems have been increasingly used to design novel
IoT/CPS solutions and to develop a plethora of applications with a high
societal relevance, such as smart homes, smart cities, smart healthcare,
and smart production. Especially in safety-critical domains, these
applications require dependable communication performance and need to meet
tight reliability and availability requirements. To this end, after years
spent designing low-power wireless networking solutions for best-effort
applications, there is an increasing need for reliable and efficient
protocols, standards, and algorithms to enable the real-world deployments
of applications with strict dependability requirements.
== Topics ==
This special issue targets scientific contributions tackling these issues.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Communication protocols for IoT and cyber-physical systems;
* Routing protocols and scheduling algorithms;
* Dependability (real-time, reliability, availability, safety);
* Fault-tolerant systems;
* Low-power wireless and networked embedded systems;
* Reliability despite harsh environmental conditions;
* Edge Computing;
* Experiences from real-world deployments;
* Benchmarking and testbeds;
* Wireless coexistence in dense deployments;
* Radio interference identification and mitigation;
* Communication standards and technologies for IoT and cyber-physical systems;
* Industrial IoT systems and networks;
* QoS in the IoT, CPS, and Industry 4.0 contexts;
* Wired and wireless convergence;
* Technical assessment of emerging IoT standards;
* Discovery, coordination, and use of IoT services;
* Opportunistic scheduling and software-defined networking;
* Network coding, virtualization, and slicing;
* Multi-technology hardware and software solutions;
* Operations, administration and management (OAM), and monitoring;
* Data processing and edge computing;
* Real-time big data analytics;
* Energy sustainability, efficiency and harvesting.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Elsevier Vehicular Communications (2019 IF: 4.706)
Special Issue on
“Revolutionary Paradigms for Smart Connected Vehicles in the 6G Era”
https://www.journals.elsevier.com/vehicular-communications/call-for-papers/…
==================================================================
By jointly involving multiple challenging requirements, such as ultra-high
reliable and ultra-low latency communications, high efficiency and
capacity, intelligent driving is one of the most ambitious and attractive
applications of the 6G initiatives. Although the convergence of
communication, caching, control and computing (4C) resources can be
leveraged to effectively enable 6G services and applications over
vehicle-to-everything (V2X) channels, multiple challenges must be addressed
to allow connected vehicles to meet the 6G requirements, to securely and
efficiently orchestrate their resources and to develop self-organizing and
self-sustaining capabilities.
Emerging communication paradigms that make effective data transmission in
very high dynamic contexts include the reprogrammability of the environment
by the means of Reprogrammable Intelligent Metasurfaces (RIMs). Moreover,
Visible Light Communication (VLC) can improve the reliability of V2X
interactions and be effective in terms of security and enhanced data rate.
With focus on networking aspects, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and
Network Function Virtualization (NFV) can bring programmability,
flexibility and scalability in connected vehicles, simplify network
management and promote an efficient and fair use of the distributed 4C
resources and programmable metasurfaces. They can be complemented by
revolutionary networking models, such as Information Centric Networking
(ICN), to provide distributed caching and computing services.
This special issue aims to collect proposals that deal with revolutionary
communication and networking technologies for connected vehicles, in a
holistic fashion or at different layers, to meet the expectations of the 6G
era.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
Software-defined vehicular networks
Vehicular cloud computing in the 6G era
Fog/edge computing architectures for connected vehicles
Integration of SDN/NFV and vehicular cloud computing
Information Centric Networking for Connected Vehicles
Impact of connected vehicles on transportation safety, management,
characterization, and prediction
Mobile sensing networking, sensor data collection and multi-modal fusion
Caching strategies for connected vehicles
Joint management of communication, control, computing and caching for 6G
vehicular applications and services
Optical wireless technologies for 6G vehicular applications and services
Reprogrammable and Intelligent Metasurfaces for smart connected vehicles
Secure and privacy-preserving communications in 6G vehicular networks

Call for Papers
International Teletraffic Congress (ITC) 2021
33rd edition Tuesday Aug. 31 - Friday Sept. 3, 2021: Avignon, France
Website: https://itc33.org
****************************************************************************************
** Papers receiving best paper awards of the conference will be invited for
fast-track reviews by IEEE Transactions on Network Science and Engineering. **
The 33 Edition of International Teletraffic Congress (ITC) taking place at
the end of Summer 2021, and it is impossible to predict the situation in
terms of the pandemic. We sincerely hope that by that time, we are able to
travel and to meet up with friends and colleagues in person in Avignon.
For now, we want to be open to the option for ITC to be an in-person event
and we are proceeding with the plans for the conference under that assumption.
However, we will grant virtual conference attendance to be possible as well
for those unable or unwilling to travel by means of virtual attendance.
The International Teletraffic Congress ITC 33, to be held during
31/08-03/09 2021, at the Avignon University, France, is the 33th edition of
this international flagship congress in the field of networking science and
practice. ITC was founded back in 1955 by enthusiastic scientists and
engineers who were willing to deploy networks in a holistic way. Since
then, it has established a multi-decade tradition as the primary forum for
presenting and discussing the latest technical advances in the broad areas
of teletraffic models, network systems, and measurements.
ITC 33 focuses on the future networks taking advantage of 5G and artificial
intelligence (AI), towards “AI-integrated Networks”. Indeed, service
providers from all over the world are already reaping the benefits of
integrating AI into their networks. For ITC 33, cutting-edge papers
spanning both theory and experimentation are solicited in all areas of
networking, ranging from traffic engineering and control with application
also to emerging softwarized/virtualized network paradigms, up to
innovative wireless scenarios brought about by the emergence of 5G and IoT
systems. We especially encourage original contributions which bridge the
gap between performance modeling and real-life operational aspects,
including works which leverage measurement data to provide a better
understanding of the wired and wireless networks operation under realistic
conditions.
ITC 33 solicits original contributions that address the latest changes and
developments in design, modelling, measurement, and performance evaluation
of communication systems, networks, and services. ITC 33 is structured into
eight different areas. The objectives in these areas include, among others,
energy-efficiency and green IT, network security and privacy, QoS and QoE,
and resilience. The technical sessions will be structured around, but are
not limited to, the following topics:
• Performance Evaluation, Control and Optimization
• Network Measurements and Big Data
• Networking Architectures and Paradigms
• Wireless and Cellular Networks
• Data Center Networking for Cloud Computing Design and Operation
• Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization
• Networking for Edge and Fog Computing • Network Economics
Besides the general submissions, ITC33 encourages submissions for the
*Ph.D. workshop* and special sessions which will be detailed in the
upcoming communications. Finally, ITC 33 will offer a number of *student
travel grants* that will be available to support full-time students for
attending the conference. A dedicated call for workshops will be detailed
in the upcoming communications.
The conference will feature a best paper award and a best student paper
award. Papers receiving best paper awards of the conference will be invited
for fast-track reviews by IEEE Transactions on Network Science and
Engineering.

ACM Transactions on Internet Technology (TOIT)
Special Issue on Recent Advances in Networks and Distributed Systems
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scope
---------
Several recent developments like the advent of the Internet-of-Things,
network softwarization, mission-critical applications, and artificial
intelligence have posed challenges for the Internet, and more generally for
networks and distributed systems:
(1: IoT) The Internet-of-Things will boost the number of Internet nodes
well beyond the billions, leads to new traffic patterns (e.g.,
high-frequency low-volume), and accelerates the other developments
described hereafter.
(2: SDN++) Softwarization "conquers" the net. What has started with SDN and
NFV will continue to lead to more flexibility and enable disruptive change,
such as the competitive co-existence of old and new, e.g., content-centric,
world-wide networks. As this softwarization significantly increases the
complexity of today's networks, new and more security problems will result.
Moreover, softwarization comes at a performance price, which is at odds
with mission-critical, real-time communication.
(3: MCA) Mission-critical applications, formerly confined to dedicated
real-time systems and (TSN, industrial Ethernet, ...) networks, are
conquering public and wide area networks. This impacts technologies and
protocols (such as 5G URLLC) as well as architectures, such as approaches
to move cloud functionality closer to the action scene, e.g., via fog and
edge computing.
(4: AI.net) The resurgence of AI, evoked by stunning successes of machine
learning, boosts the need for computing resources that cannot be embedded
in myriads of IoT devices and energy-critical handhelds like smartphones.
This and the need for joint processing, requires shuffling 'big data' from
the action scene to those resources, accelerating the need for offloading
approaches and, depending on the application and the distribution of
stakeholders, aggravating the three afore-mentioned challenges.
These four challenges - abbreviated as IoT, SDN++, MCA, and AI - are
densely interwoven, both mutually supporting and mutually aggravating each
other. In the TOIT special issue, we bring together contributions to all
four challenges and seek to track down their positive and negative
interdependencies.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
---------------------------------------------------
* Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and their application in,
and impacts on, networking
* Evolution from cloud computing to mobile cloud, fog and edge computing
* Consistency, reliability, availability, and programming support for
meeting the MCA challenge in networks
* Contributions to the four challenges in context of cyber-physical systems
* Emerging networked applications
* Green and energy-efficient networks and networked systems
* Information-centric networking, content distribution and retrieval, and
their co-existence with classical networks
* Network architectures and protocols
* Approaches to the pertinent network security and privacy aspects
* Methods for design, implementation, and analysis of networked systems
considering the recent challenges and advances
* Pertinent middleware architectures and platforms for networked systems
* Pertinent concepts for mobile, ad-hoc, opportunistic, vehicular, sensor
networks
* Advancements to software-defined networking, network function
virtualization, and further network softwarization
* Reflection of recent challenges in SoA, web services, and mobile services
* Advancements in social networks, social computing, data-intensive
computing
* Novel concepts for tactile and low-latency communication
* Transport- and application-layer protocols in response to the four
challenges
