The 4th International Workshop on Edge Systems, Analytics and Networking
(EdgeSys'21) co-located with EuroSys 2021
26 April, 2021 | Edinburgh, Scotland, UK
https://edge-sys.github.io/2021/
-----------------------------------------------
Given the growing demand for real-time gathering and processing of vast
amount of data from data-intensive services such as autonomous driving and
augmented reality (AR), we are witnessing a visible trend to push computing
and data analytics closer to the edge of networks for benefits in low
latency, reliability, throughput, security and privacy. Supported by
lightweight virtualization technologies such as Docker Containers and
Unikernels, the decentralized edge computing paradigm aims to offer
efficient access to various geographically distributed computing resources.
In this context, the EdgeSys workshop focuses on the confluence of edge
computing, decentralized communication and distributed computing. For
example, there are several industry-led edge computing and orchestration
platforms such as KubeEdge, Firecracker, and Azure Sphere. In the
decentralized communication space, systems such as Mastodon and Matrix have
been developed. There are also lots of academic research activities on
mobile data and computation offloading (e.g., Cloudlet, Talket, ThinkAir,
MAUI, and MADNet) and systems that combine decentralization and
computation/storage offloading together, such as IPFS. In addition, as data
analytics and machine learning are increasingly offered as a service, the
next phase of evolution is to extend the offerings beyond basic algorithms
and push the analytics closer to the edge where the data from users and
devices is first captured. In this regard, edge computing has the potential
to enable a new class of real-time data analytics platforms and services.
We expect such edge-driven data analytics will emerge and reshape the
existing cloud-based data processing pipelines. The knowledge from this new
edge pipeline can further power future cyber-physical and network services,
such as cognitive assistance and proactive accident prevention for
autonomous driving.
The 4th International Workshop on Edge Systems, Analytics and Networking
(EdgeSys'21), in conjunction with ACM EuroSys 2021, aims to bring together
system researchers, data scientists, engineers and practitioners to
identify open directions and discuss the latest research ideas and results
on edge systems, analytics and networking, especially those related to
novel and emerging technologies and use cases. The EdgeSys'21 workshop
focuses on systems, analytics and networking aspects, covering system

Authors are encouraged to submit papers describing original and unpublished
research, not currently under review in other venues. In particular,
innovative, early-stage ideas and preliminary results are welcome. Papers
must be submitted electronically as PDF files, formatted for 8.5x11-inch
paper. The length of the paper must be no more than 6 pages in the ACM
double-column format (10-pt font), including references and everything. The
authors are suggested to use the ACM Master article template. The reviews
will be single-blind. The first page must contain an abstract, the name(s)
and affiliation(s) of the author(s), as well as the corresponding contact
information. Each submission will receive independent, blind peer reviews
from the program committee. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM

3rd IEEE Workshop on Emerging Technologies and Trends
in Engineering Low-Power Networks
(NewNets - co-located with IEEE WoWMoM)
June 7, 2021 - Pisa, Italy
http://wowmom2021.iit.cnr.it/workshops/newnets-2021/
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
AIMS AND SCOPE
A founding pillar of the IoT concept is the availability of low-cost
low-power devices with wireless technologies providing both sensing and
actuation. In the past decade, the research community has produced proven
solutions to build low-power mesh networks. Traditionally, the focus has
been on short-range radio communication (e.g., ZigBee, Bluetooth, ZWave).
An appealing alternative that have gained momentum in the IoT landscape is
to equip the nodes with long-range radio modules. As a result, long-range
radio communication technologies (e.g., SigFox, LoRa, and 802.15.4g) are
considered as candidate technologies for many low-power wide area network
(LPWAN) applications, especially those that require extended coverage such
as citywide sensing, environmental monitoring, or remote infrastructure
monitoring.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners
working in the field of IoT from both academia and industry, to discuss and
explore short- and long-range solutions, the tradeoffs between these two
paradigms, as well as how they can be used in synergy. In order to push the
state of the art, several points need to be addressed: new features for the
long-range technologies (i.e., over-the-air updates, roaming), radio
resource management, regulations and policies on spectrum usage and
sharing, business case analysis that are more well suited for certain
vertical markets.
The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- protocol design
- hardware platform design
- modelling and analysis of low-power short or/and long-range
communication
- reliability, adaptability, and dependability of short and long-range
communication solutions
- new features for the long-range technologies (i.e., over-the-air
updates, roaming)
- wake-up radios for short- or/and long-range technologies
- radio resource management
- applications domains (e.g., smart cities, smart health, smart
buildings, smart transportation)
- anomaly detection
- security solutions
- deployment experiences, case studies, and lessons learned
- evaluation and testbeds;
- regulations and policies on spectrum usage and sharing
- business case analysis that is more well suited for certain vertical
markets.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Submitted papers must contain between 4 and 6 single spaced U.S. letter
pages, including all figures, tables, and references. All submissions must
be written in English.

Call for Paper
Industrial Internet of Things typically consists of several thousands of
heterogeneous devices, such as sensors, actuators, access points,
machinery, end-user's hand held equipment, and supply chain. In such
industrial environment, multitude of data is generated from massive IoT
devices, e.g., sensors for monitoring environment, reading temperature, and
gauging pressure. Most of data is from delay-sensitive and computation
intensive applications, such as real-time manufacturing and automated
diagnostics, which require big data analytics with low latency. Machine
learning has been witnessed as an efficient solution for big data
analytics. The majority of such ML algorithms are centralized methods,
meaning that they first gather data from different users for use as a
training dataset, which is placed on the ML server, and then build a model
to classify new data samples by applying ML algorithms to this training
dataset. However, the access to these datasets in centralized ML methods
raises concerns about data privacy for users. To address a part of these
issues, federated learning (FL) was designed to protect data privacy. In
FL, each participant uses a global training model, without needing to
upload their private data to a third-party server. Compared with
conventional ML, FL can preserve data security, especially in terms of
participant data during the learning process. FL can also help in updating
server side data for the global model, and the participant is not required
to provide their data. However, in FL, individual computing units may show
abnormal actions, for example due to faulty software, hardware invasions,
unreliable communication channels, malicious samples deliberately craft the
model. To mitigate these challenges, we require robust policies to control
the learning phases in FL.
Motivated by the above issues, this special section solicits original
research and practical contributions which advance security and privacy of
federated learning solutions for industrial IoT applications. Results
obtained by simulations must be validated in bounds by experiments or
analytical results. Surveys and state-of-the-art tutorials are also considered.
This special section will focus on (but not limited to) the following topics:
* Privacy preserving and security approaches for large scale analytics
in IIoT
* Hardware-Level Attack and Defense in Federated Learning for IIoT
* Determining appropriate security measures in response to risk
assessments in Federated Learning for IIoT
* Data-Centric Security in Federated Learning for IIoT
* Finding and evaluating vulnerabilities that threats might exploit in
Federated Learning for IIoT
* Privacy and trust challenges associated with federated learning in IIoT
* Resilient decision making under security and privacy constraints in
Federated Learning for IIoT
* Validation of security and privacy protection methods in real-world
applications

CALL FOR PAPERS
***************
Edge Computing is emerging due to the great availability of computational
resources, mobile devices, sensors and actuators that are pervasively
deployed and today amount to more than 7 billion interfaces with the
network. It enables the pushing of computation to the edge of the network,
away from data centers and close to people and data sources. Edge
Intelligence derives from the convergence of Edge Computing with the smart
exploitation of artificial intelligence methodologies and cognitive
technologies, involving sensing/actuation, learning and reasoning on
distributed data and Internet of Things devices.
A new generation of smart environments, empowered with Edge Intelligence
capabilities, can assist the effective management of a modern society, by
combining the development of advanced services able to satisfy user needs
and preferences dynamically, with undelayable aspects like better
exploitation of renewable energy sources, energy optimization, environment
sustainability, people's safety, quality of life and comfort. Edge
Intelligence helps service provisioning, computation and communications to
become efficient, green and sustainable in different ways, among which: (i)
Edge Intelligence can contribute to optimize data center usage and reduce
the amount of data needing to traverse the network, leading to a reduction
of energy consumption and carbon emissions; (ii) applications enriched by
Edge Intelligence can satisfy user needs through a more sustainable use of
environmental resources; (iii) based on predictions performed by Edge
Intelligence algorithms, data and computation can be brought closer to the
sites where green energy is available.
Edge Intelligence offers an unprecedented opportunity to offer cutting edge
services to individuals and organizations and, at the same time, to contrast
the continuous growth in the exchange of data and use of communication and
network infrastructures. The energy consumption and the greenhouse gas
emissions related to ICT technologies are estimated to amount, respectively,
to 3% and 4% of the total, and these figures are being further increased by
the Covid 19 pandemic. This Special Issue aims to be a valuable venue for
novel and original research works in the field of Edge Intelligence and its
exploitation for the design and development of sustainable and smart
environments like smart cities and cognitive buildings.

*******************************************
IEEE LANMAN has an established tradition as a forum for presenting and
discussing the latest technical advances in local and metropolitan area
networking. Cutting-edge papers spanning both theory and experimentation
are solicited in all areas of networking. In keeping with the heritage of
the symposium, there will be a central theme, and in 2021 the theme is
“Networking in the New Normal.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world to a new normal. Not only are
research, business, education, and entertainment being shifted online, but
also many of our daily activities are. Recent technological advances in
networking present unique opportunities to bring us to this new normal. At
the same time, they still pose numerous challenges to be addressed, such as
scalable and pervasive connectivity, sustainable networking, and new
application paradigms for online activities.
The intimate single-track format of the symposium encourages stimulating
exchanges between researchers. The event is expected to be a forum for
discussion of new and interdisciplinary ideas on network access protocols,
network management and control, services and applications. Speculative and
potentially transformative ideas are particularly encouraged, as are
studies reporting measurements from real-life networks and testbeds. Papers
are solicited on any topic in networking, including, but not limited to:
Networking for online education and entertainment
Networking protocols and architectures for the IoTs
Machine-to-machine communication
Cloud, edge and fog computing integration
Co-existence and heterogeneity support at the edge (HetNets)
Energy efficiency for local and metropolitan area networking
5G and 6G localization, device-free localization, and privacy-aware
localization
Information security for local and metropolitan area networking
Intelligent routing, forwarding, and scheduling
Named data networking
Network and transport mechanisms for latency reduction
Network virtualization in local and metropolitan areas
Performance and reliability of local and metropolitan area networks
Software-defined networking in local and metropolitan areas
IEEE LANMAN 2021 solicits paper submissions of papers up to 6 pages. Some
regular paper submissions may be accepted as short papers (2 pages) by the
TPC. The page limits include all figures, tables, and references. All

-----
Call for Papers
The Workshop on ns-3 (WNS3) will be held as a fully virtual event, starting
on June 23, 2021 and tentatively planned for two days. The objective of the
workshop is to gather ns-3 users and developers, together with networking
simulation practitioners and users, and developers of other network
simulation tools, to discuss the ns-3 simulator and related activities.
As in past years, the conference organizers will apply to ACM to publish
accepted papers in the ACM ICPS series.
WNS3 invites authors to submit original high quality papers presenting
different aspects of developing and using ns-3. In such papers,
reproducibility and methodology will be a key reviewing criteria, as
explained below. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the
following:
- new models, devices, protocols and applications for ns-3
- using ns-3 in modern networking research
- comparison with other network simulators and emulators
- speed and scalability issues for ns-3
- multiprocessor and distributed simulation with ns-3, including use of GPUs
- validation of ns-3 models
- credibility and reproducibility issues for ns-3 simulations
- user experience issues of ns-3
- frameworks for the definition and automation of ns-3 simulations
- post-processing, visualisation and statistical analysis tools for ns-3
- models ported from other simulators to ns-3
- using real code for simulation with ns-3 and using ns-3 code in network
applications
- integration of ns-3 with testbeds, emulators, and other simulators or
tools
- using ns-3 API from programming languages other than C++ or Python
- porting ns-3 to unsupported platforms
- network emulation with ns-3
- using ns-3 in education and teaching
We also solicit novel papers with a focus on an industrial application of
ns-3 (use of ns-3 within industry). Papers in this category must address
these questions:
- What specific R&D questions did you or do you want to answer by
simulation?
- Why and how did you choose ns-3 as the appropriate tool for your
application?
- What surprises did you find, in correctness/behavior? in implementation?
in learning curve?
- What are the remaining barriers to fully addressing your R&D questions?
- What general capabilities would have made your work easier/faster?
Papers must be written in English and must not exceed 8 pages. Every paper
will be peer-reviewed. At least one author of each accepted paper must
register and present the work at the workshop.
Submission instructions
Authors should submit papers through EasyChair in PDF format, complying
with ACM “sigconf” Proceedings format. Submitted papers must not have been
submitted for review or published (partially or completely) elsewhere.
Acceptance Criteria
Papers will be accepted based on the relevance, novelty, and impact of the
contribution, as well as the quality of writing and presentation.
Authors presenting new ns-3 models, frameworks, integration setups, etc.
are encouraged to include all traditional parts of a scientific paper:
introduction, motivation, related work, assumptions, verification and
validation, conclusions and references. As a general rule, papers that only
document source code will be rejected.
Authors presenting networking research using ns-3 are encouraged to follow
best simulation practices and focus particularly on the credibility and
reproducibility of simulation results. We strongly encourage authors of all
papers, demonstrations, and posters to include links to relevant source
code and instructions on how to use it. This will make contributions more
useful for the ns-3 community. If code has been submitted through the ns-3
merge request process, or published as a module in the ns-3 app store,
please list the link(s). This will be considered a plus
Please do not hesitate to contact the workshop chairs if you are uncertain
whether your submission falls within the scope of the workshop.
Copyright Policy
Authors will have their paper published in the ACM Digital Library, which
will require copyright transfer to ACM under their normal terms and
conditions. In the spirit of open source, we encourage authors of published
papers to exercise their right to publish author-prepared versions on their
respective home page, on a publicly accessible server of their employer, or
on a pre-print server. Upon request, we will provide links from the
WNS3 program
on the ns-3 web site to the author-prepared version.
Plagiarism Policy
We follow the ACM standards and conduct regarding plagiarism.
Reviewing Process Conflict of Interest Policy
Reviewers will follow the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking
Conflict-of-Interest Guidelines. Authors are requested to identify
potential conflicts-of-interest among the workshop’s technical program
committee.
Demonstrations and Short Talks
In addition to the regular paper track, we will organize an
exhibition-style demonstration and short talks session. The aim is to
foster interactive discussions on work-in-progress, new problem statements,
ideas for future development related to ns-3, and display innovative
prototypes.
A Call for Short Talks and Demos page will be posted at a later date.
Accepted short talk and demo abstracts will be published on the ns-3 web
site. At least one author of each accepted demo/short talk must register
and present the work at the workshop.
Awards
One Best Paper will be selected by the TPC chairs and will be announced at
the workshop.
Registration
Registration information will be posted at a later date.
More information on these will be announced at a future date.
