IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine
Special Issue on "Inter-Vehicular Communications" (pdf version of this
CFP is available at http://www.3g-wireless.net/IVC-CFP.pdf
<http://www.3g-wireless.net/IVC-CFP.pdf> )
Wireless communications technologies (cellular phones, wireless LANs,
etc.) have enabled many of the conveniences in our lives, and also
increased our day by day productivity. Another area where there is much
potential for wireless technologies to make a tremendous impact is the
area of inter-vehicular communications (IVC). The field of IVC is also
known as vehicle-to-vehicle communications (V2V) and vehicular ad hoc
networks (VANET).
There are numerous emerging applications that are unique to the
vehicular setting. For example, safety applications would make driving
safer; driver information services could intelligently inform drivers
about congestion, businesses and services in the vicinity of the
vehicle, and other news. Mobile commerce could extend to the realm of
vehicles. Existing forms of entertainment may penetrate the vehicular
domain, and new forms of entertainment may emerge, all supported by the
inter-vehicular communications capabilities. These emerging services
are currently not well supported.
Numerous research challenges need to be addressed in order for
inter-vehicular communications to be widely deployed. The combination
of unique features of inter-vehicular applications and networking opens
new opportunities for many interesting research areas. The
communications networking between cars has different characteristics
from other communications networking problems. For example, because of
the rapidly changing topology as cars move around, there are
similarities with ad hoc networking scenarios. However, the constraints
and optimizations are different. Power efficiency is not as important
for inter-vehicular communications as it is for traditional ad hoc
networking, since vehicles have a powerful and rechargeable source of
energy. Vehicles in general are also
constrained to move within roads (and within lanes most of the time).
The purpose of this special issue is to showcase the variety of research
being conducted in IVC and survey the state-of-the-art in this field.
We solicit original unpublished manuscripts not currently being
considered elsewhere for publication. Topics of interest include, but
are not limited to, the following:
. Service creation and management
. Vehicular communications applications in general
. Navigation safety applications
. Content distribution to vehicles
. Vehicle data collection and harvesting
. Role of IVC in Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS)
. Link and physical layer issues, algorithms and protocols
. Cross-layer protocol design
. Network architectures, system architectures
. Inter-working of vehicle-to-vehicle and
vehicle-to-infrastructure communications
. Network protocols and algorithms, including clustering, routing,
etc.
. Vehicle movement simulation
. Security for IVC
. Network management for IVC
. Mobility management
Articles should be tutorial in nature and should be written in a style

CALL FOR PAPERS
************************
SECOND INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON MULTIMEDIA OVER WIRELESS
(in conjunction with IWCMC 2006)
Sheraton Wall Centre, Vancouver, Canada
July 3-6, 2006
http://www.ece.northwestern.edu/~haohong/ismw2006/index.html
The rapid growth in interactive multimedia applications, such as video
telephonies, video games and TV broadcasting has resulted in spectacular
strides in the progress of wireless communication systems. The current third
generation (3G) wireless systems and the next generation (4G) wireless systems
in planning support higher bit rates. However, the high error rates and
stringent delay constraints in wireless systems are still significant
obstacles for these applications and services. On the other hand, the
development of more advanced wireless systems provides opportunities for
proposing novel wireless multimedia protocols and new applications and
services that can take the maximum advantage of the systems.
The symposium aims to provide an excellent forum for all experts working in
these areas to join together and to discuss various important issues on
multimedia over wireless. The timing of this symposium is set such that the
ideas that come out of it can affect the evolution of 4G. The papers submitted
to this symposium should focus on the state-of-the-art research in various
important areas related to emerging technologies and standards on the coding
and transmission of multimedia information over wireless networks. We solicit
papers covering a variety of topics that include, but not limited to the
following subjects:
Advanced multimedia coding algorithms
Error resilient and error concealment
Video quality assessment
Rate control for wireless video
Scalable and multiple description multimedia coding and transmission
Joint source-channel coding
Efficient transport protocols for wireless
Optimal resource allocation for energy-efficient wireless multimedia
Cross-layer multimedia communication system design and optimization
Proxy-based systems for video transcoding and content distribution
Lightweight video encoding methods based on distributed source coding
Quality of Service issues
Multimedia processing for wireless sensor networks

(Submission deadline January 15, 2006)
http://ubicomp.lancs.ac.uk/workshops/iwsawc2006
************************************************************************
Through recent technological development researchers are now able to embed
sensing, computation, communication and actuation in personal devices and
everyday artefacts giving them the possibility to create large scale systems
of interacting smart appliances, physical objects and wearable computers.
This penetration of computation in all aspects of everyday life and work
requires thorough exploration of new kinds of embedded and smart devices and
software infrastructures and architectures that support such large-scale
scenarios beyond the lab environment.
The diversity of systems, devices, services and applications and their
distributed nature raises important questions about collaboration between
system components. Appropriate solutions often have to take potential resource
limitations of connected devices and appliances into account.
Contextual awareness, digital representations of physical system components as
well as access methods and processing of distributed information are of
specific importance - especially as smart devices and objects along with their
services are seamlessly integrated in the real world to support users in their
daily living activities.

Scope
In recent years, there has been a rapidly increasing demand for the
development of advanced interactive multimedia applications, such as video
telephony, video games and TV broadcasting. However, these applications are
always stringently constrained by current wireless system architectures
because the request of high data rate for video transmission. To better serve
this need, 4G broadband mobile systems are in planning and are expected to
increase the mobile data transmission rates and bring higher spectral
efficiency, lower cost per transmitted bit, and increased flexibility of
mobile terminals and networks. The new technology strives to eliminate the
distinction between video over wireless and video over wireline networks. In
the meantime, great opportunities are provided for proposing novel wireless
video protocols and applications, and developing advanced video coding and
communications systems and algorithms for the next-generation video
applications that can take maxim
um advantage of the 4G wireless systems.
The papers in this issue will focus on state-of-the-art research on all
