The First International Workshop on
Mobile Peer-to-Peer Computing (MP2P'04)
http://www.comp.polyu.edu.hk/~mp2p2004
In conjunction with the 2nd IEEE International Conference on
Pervasive Computing and Communications (PerCom’04)
Orlando, Florida, USA, March 14 – 17, 2004
Peer-to-Peer (P2P) computing is a networking and distributed computing
paradigm which allows the sharing of computing resources and services by
direct, symmetric interaction between computers. With the advance in
mobile wireless communication technology and the increasing number of
mobile users, P2P computing, in both academic research and industrial
development, has recently begun to extend its scope to address problems
relevant to mobile devices and wireless networks. The special
characteristics of mobile environments, such as highly variable
connectivity, disconnection, location-dependency, and energy and
resource sensitivity, and the diversity in wireless networks bring new
challenges for research in mobile P2P computing.
MP2P’04 is intended to serve as a forum for scientists and engineers in
academia and industry to exchange and discuss their experiences, new
ideas, and research results about all aspects of mobile P2P computing.
It will address the challenges, technologies, and architectures leading
to real-world solutions that provide users with direct access and
control of their critical peer-based information and services,
regardless of location or device. The principal theme of MP2P’04 is the
development of protocols, systems and applications for mobile P2P
computing. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to:
· Architecture and platforms for mobile P2P computing
· Routing protocols for mobile P2P computing
· Resource and service discovery in mobile P2P computing
· Peer access and control in mobile environment
· Data exchange and rendering techniques for mobile devices
· Secure communication protocols for mobile P2P computing
· Mobile P2P messaging systems
· Peer-to-peer broadband wireless communications
· Applications of mobile P2P

* Description
A vast manifold of tiny, embedded and autonomous computing and
communication systems have started to create and populate a
pervasive and ubiquitous computing landscape, characterized by the
autonomy of their programmed behavior, the dynamics and context-
awareness of services and applications they offer, the ad-hoc
interoperability of services and the different modes of user
interaction upon those services. This is mostly due to technological
progress like the maturing of wireless networking, exciting new
information processing possibilities induced by novel microprocessor
technologies, low power storage systems, smart material, and motor-,
controller-, sensor- and actuator technologies. A future computing
scenario is envisioned in which almost every object in our everyday
environment will be equipped with embedded processors, wireless
communication facilities and embedded software to perceive, perform
and control a multitude of tasks and functions. Since many of these
objects are already able to communicate and interact with global
networks and with each other, the vision of context-aware "smart
appliances" and "smart spaces" has already become a reality. Service
provision is based on the ability of being aware of the presence of
other objects or users, and systems can be designed in order to be
sensitive, adaptive and responsive to their needs, habits and even
emotions. With pervasive computing technology embodied into real
world objects like furniture, clothing, crafts, rooms, etc., those
artefacts also become the interface to "invisible" services and
allow to mediate between the physical and digital (or virtual) world
via natural interaction - away from desktop displays and keyboards.
Novel interface concepts for situated interaction give rise for
bringing the interaction with computers "back to the real world".
All these observations pose serious challenges to the conceptual
architectures of computing, and the related engineering disciplines
in computer science. PERVASIVE 2004, the Second International
Conference on Pervasive Computing, provides a premier venue to bring
together researchers and practitioners working in all foundational
and applied research areas of pervasive and ubiquitous computing. It
will include presentations, workshops, tutorials and multimedia
demonstrations on subjects like:

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on
Performance Modeling and Evaluation of High-Performance Parallel and
Distributed Systems
To appear in Performance Evaluation: An International Journal
http://www.dcs.gla.ac.uk/people/personal/mohamed/si-pe.html
The world's unfulfilled appetite for high computation power, supported by
advances in VLSI and communications technology as
well as algorithms, has led to the rapid deployment of a wide range of
parallel and distributed systems. Many factors affect the
performance of these systems, including the processors and hardware
architecture, the communication network, the various system
software components, and the mapping of end-user applications and their
algorithms to the architecture. Analyzing performance
factors in such systems has proven to be a challenging task that requires
the innovative performance analysis tools and methods
to keep up with the rapid evolution and ever increasing complexity of such
systems. Along the line of three major evaluation
techniques: measurement, analytic modeling and simulation, this special
issue will cover various topics on quantitative modeling,
simulation and measurement/testing of parallel and distributed systems. The
topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
· Integrated performance tool environments
· Analytical modeling
· Performance measurement and monitoring
· Performance tuning and testing
· Performance metrics
· Innovative and parallel simulation techniques and tools

CALL FOR PAPERS
2nd International Workshop on
Mobile Distributed Computing (MDC'04)
http://www.comp.polyu.edu.hk/~mdc04
In conjunction with the 24th International Conference on
Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS 2004)
Tokyo, Japan, March 23 - 26, 2004
With the advance in mobile wireless communication technology, research in
distributed computing is beginning to extend its scope to address problems
relevant to mobile environments. The special characteristics of mobile
environments, such as highly variable connectivity, disconnection,
location-dependency, and energy and resource sensitivity, and the diversity
and flexibility introduced by mobile systems bring new challenges for
research in distributed computing. Existing solutions, tailored primarily
for wired distributed environments, need to be modified/extended, and new
solutions need to be created. Mobile distributed computing has emerged as a
discipline of distributed systems research and practice toward support for
mobility. It is concerned with creating solutions using mobile
communication networks and mobile computing devices to enable the sharing
of distributed resources/services and to facilitate remote collaborations
while people work away from the fixed, wired facilities.
Following the success of the first workshop MDC'03, held in conjunction
with ICDCS'03 in Providence, Rhode Island USA, MDC'04 provides a forum for
scientists and engineers in academia and industry to exchange and discuss
their experiences, new ideas, research results, and products about all
aspects of mobile distributed computing. Topics of particular interest
include, but are not limited to:
* Distributed algorithms for communication, synchronization and
coordination in mobile computing environments
* Cooperating mobile agents
* Environments, middleware and tool support for mobile distributed
computing
* Fault tolerance and security in mobile distributed environments
* Location-based services and applications
* Pervasive computing
* Mobile cluster computing / Mobile grid computing/ Mobile
Peer-to-Peer computing
* Resource/service sharing and management in mobile distributed
environments
* Mobile distributed transactions
* Distributed applications in mobile environments
Paper Submission:
MDC 2004 invites authors to submit original and unpublished work. Papers
