Call for Papers: Deadline March 10, 2003
Wireless, Vehicular and Mobile Commerce: A Symposium at IEEE Vehicular
Technology Conference (www.vtc2003.org) October 4-9, 2003
Orlando, FL, USA
Motivation and Scope
With the emergence and wide spread adoption of wireless and mobile
networks, devices, and middleware, mobile commerce applications are
beginning to receive some interest in research and development community.
According to estimates by Gartner Group, in 2004, at least 40% of
consumer-to-business e-commerce will be initiated from smart phones.
A study from the Wireless Data and Computing Service, a division of
Strategy Analytics, reports that the worldwide mobile commerce market
may rise to $200 Billion by 2004. The report predicts that transactions
via wireless devices will generate about $14 Billion a year. In many
European countries and Japan with significant wireless penetration,
the mobile commerce market is already taking off and reaching billions
of dollars a year.
It is to be noted that mobile commerce may require significantly different
approaches in design, development, and implementation of applications
due to the inherent characteristics of wireless networks and mobile devices.
Many interesting and important challenges include design and development
of mobile commerce applications, networking requirements, transactions
and security issues, business models and strategies. Mobile commerce
will also significantly benefit from research in mobile devices, mobile
middleware, and wireless network infrastructure. Vehicular technologies
and intelligent transportation systems are likely to play a very
important role in this emerging area of commerce. The symposium will
bring together experts in this field and address significant
challenges in mobile commerce from both technology and business
application point of views.
The symposium will cover several topics including
* New m-commerce applications including mobile advertising, mobile
financial applications, mobile inventory, proactive service management,
wireless re-engineering among others
* Requirements of m-commerce applications
* Development of mobile commerce applications (new constraints,
approaches, interoperability, processing and storage, desirable
features)
* Vehicular commerce
* Use of vehicular technologies in m-commerce
* Vehicle to vehicle commerce
* Intelligent transportation systems and m-commerce
* Emerging vehicular technologies for m-commerce
* Infrastructure support from wireless networks (location management,
wireless dependability, coverage, roaming, inter-working etc)
* Location management support for mobile commerce (indoor vs outdoor,
precision, performance and transaction requirements, multiple location
technologies)
* Location and context awareness
* User and location specific service discovery
* Devices, middleware, and operating systems support
* Security and transactions in mobile commerce (mobile commerce transactions
over wireless networks, new and current security paradigms for
m-commerce)
* Business issues and models for mobile commerce (pricing and new ways of
charging, revenue generation and division among carriers and operators
* Other emerging and related issues to m-commerce applications and technologies
We are currently in the process of negotiating with a journal for a
special issue on m-commerce. Some of the best papers from this symposium
are likely to be included in the proposed issue.

Subject: [Tccc] CFP: JSAC Special Issue on Wireless Ad Hoc Networks
Date: Mon, 24 Feb 2003 14:15:38 -0500
From: Jeff Wieselthier <wieselthier(a)itd.nrl.navy.mil>
To: tccc(a)cs.columbia.edu
CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications
WIRELESS AD HOC NETWORKS
http://www.argreenhouse.com/society/J-SAC/Calls/wireless_adhoc.html
*
*Novel approaches are needed to address ad hoc networks, which are
characterized by the lack of an infrastructure. For example,
point-to-point and point-to-multipoint modes of communication must be
supported in a multihop network that typically consists of small (often
disadvantaged) users that are characterized by severely limited energy
supply, signal-processing capability, antenna directivity, bandwidth,
etc. Crucial applications for mobile ad hoc networks include military
communications and disaster relief, although commercial applications are
certainly possible as well. In applications with a large number of
nodes, scalability is a major concern.
The study of ad hoc networks is an interdisciplinary one, which can
potentially incorporate communication and information theory,
distributed networking algorithms, data structures and compression,
coding, signal processing, detection, antenna characteristics,
optimization methods, simulation, testbed implementations etc. Papers
submitted for this special issue must directly address ad hoc networking
issues.
We outline here only a few of the many aspects of ad hoc network design
and control that will be addressed in this special issue. First,
distributed network organization algorithms (such as those for
clustering) may be used to create the equivalent of an ad hoc
infrastructure. Distributed algorithms are also needed for routing,
channel access, and other control functions. Networking techniques for
ad hoc networks must address the challenges imposed by the all-wireless
environment. For example, by contrast with wired networks, the
conventional layered protocol stack is not well suited to the ad hoc
wireless networking environment because it does not exploit the
potential improvements in performance that can be obtained by jointly
designing protocols that span multiple layers. Specifically, it is
expected that improved performance can be obtained by considering the
properties of the physical and data link layers when designing and
operating the media-access control (MAC) protocol. Similarly, there are
potential benefits to be obtained by developing protocols that address
jointly the routing and MAC functions. Additional benefits can be
obtained by jointly addressing higher-layer functions along with routing
and MAC. Energy-aware protocols (from the perspective of either
energy-efficient or energy-constrained operation) are of critical
importance in many ad hoc scenarios. Such energy-aware operation can
span multiple layers, e.g., by addressing trade-offs between energy used
for RF transmission and for signal processing.
It is the goal of this special issue to reflect the latest in the state
of the art in ad hoc networks by examining all aspects of ad hoc network
design and control, including the dependencies between various network
functions and the potential benefits that can be gained by cross-layer
design. We are interested in papers on fundamental performance limits,
but more importantly on algorithm design and performance, system
implementations, etc.
We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished
contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc networking. Possible
topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Physical layer issues in ad hoc networks
* Media Access Control (MAC) techniques
* Self-organizing architectures and protocols
* Routing protocols
* Cross-layer protocol design
* Mobility management
* Protocols for mobile applications
* Transport-layer issues
* Signal-processing issues in ad hoc networks
* Integration with wired networks
* Applications
* Energy-aware protocols
* Security in ad hoc networks
* Capacity and scheduling
* Node implementation
* Effects on existing protocols
* Quality of service
* Broadcasting and multicasting
* Multimedia and traffic integration
* Experiments and testbeds
* Error-control schemes
* Synchronization and scheduling
* Scalability
* Performance analysis and simulation
* Properties of antennas
* Optimization methods
* Fundamental limits in ad hoc networks
All papers on any of the above topics must include a definite and strong
connection to ad hoc networks. Please contact Jeffrey Wieselthier at
wieselthier(a)itd.nrl.navy.mil if there are any questions about the
suitability of the paper for this special issue.
Prospective authors should prepare their manuscripts in accordance with
the IEEE J-SAC format described in the Information for Authors at the
J-SAC website. All papers should be submitted in pdf format via email
to Jeffrey Wieselthier at wieselthier(a)itd.nrl.navy.mil according to the
following timetable:

VTC 2003 - Symposium on
Wireless LAN / Cellular Internetworking
Motivation and Scope
---------------------
The recent evolution and successful deployment of WLAN systems worldwide
has fuelled the need for interworking mechanisms between WLANs and cellular
telecommunication networks, such as GSM/GPRS, UMTS, cdma2000, etc. Several
forums and standardization bodies worldwide have already initiated
activities for exploiting WLAN technology and integrating this technology
into cellular telecommunication networks. In addition, several R&D projects
are currently underway, which address vertical handovers between WLANs and
UMTS, as well as common authentication, authorization and accounting
procedures.
It is evident that the integration of WLANs and cellular telecommunication
networks is of paramount importance nowadays, from both business and
technology points of view. However, this integration poses several
challenges, such as vertical handovers, consistent QoS provision, common
authentication and billing, etc, which call for extensive studies and
efficient solutions.
The VTC 2003 symposium on Wireless LAN / Cellular Interworking aims to
address the aforementioned challenges and to propose and analyze efficient
interworking solutions. It also aims at reporting the recent results of
related R&D and standardization activities worldwide. In particular, the
most significant areas that will be addressed are the following:
¨ Interworking requirements, issues and architectures
¨ Seamless roaming between WLAN and cellular networks

CALL FOR PAPERS
MobiCom 2003
The Ninth Annual International Conference
on Mobile Computing and Networking
September 14-19, 2003
San Diego, California, USA
http://www.sigmobile.org/mobicom/2003/
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
ACM MobiCom 2003, the Ninth Annual International Conference on Mobile
Computing and Networking, is the ninth in a series of annual conferences
sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE dedicated to addressing the challenges in the
areas of mobile computing and wireless and mobile networking. The MobiCom
conference series serves as the premier international forum addressing
networks, systems, algorithms, and applications that support the symbiosis
of mobile computers and wireless networks. MobiCom is a highly selective,
single-track conference focusing on all issues in mobile computing and
wireless and mobile networking at the link layer and above. MobiCom 2003
will be held September 14-19, 2003, at the Westin Horton Plaza Hotel in
beautiful, sunny San Diego, California.
PAPERS: Authors are invited to submit full papers presenting new research
related to the theory or practice of mobile computing and networking. All
submissions must describe original research, not published or currently

and Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET) journals.
CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference also solicits short papers (maximum of
8 pages) that challenge the mobile computing community with revolutionary
new technologies or visionary applications. Such papers should provide
stimulating ideas or grand visions that may open up exciting avenues of
far-reaching future research; descriptions of new products or simple
evolution of existing work are not appropriate as Challenges Papers.
Challenges Papers will be reviewed and should be submitted using the
normal submission procedure but must be clearly identified as intended
as Challenges Papers.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled
electronically. Authors should prepare a Portable Document Format (PDF)
or PostScript version of their full paper. Papers must be no longer than
15 pages (8 pages for Challenges submissions), in font size no smaller than
10 points, and must fit properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5x11 inches)
with reasonable margins. Detailed instructions on the paper submission
procedure and format are available on the conference web pages. All
papers being submitted must be registered by March 12, 2003. The paper
submission deadline is then March 12, 2003.
All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through
double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld
from the reviewers. Authors' names must not appear in the paper or in the
PostScript or PDF file. Submitted papers (or substantially similar papers)
must not be currently under review for any other publication. Please
direct any questions about the paper submission process to the Program
Co-Chairs at mobicom_pcchairs(a)acm.org.

Economics and Information Security
Second Annual Workshop
May 29-30, University of Maryland
http://www.cpppe.umd.edu/rhsmith3/index.html
Do we spend enough on keeping `hackers' out of our computer systems?
Do we not spend enough? Or do we spend too much? For that matter, do
we spend too little on the police and the army, or too much? And do we
spend our security budgets on the right things?
The economics of security is a rapidly growing field of research. More
and more people are coming to realise that security failures are
often due to perverse incentives rather than to the lack of suitable
technical protection mechanisms. (Indeed, the former often explain the
latter.) While much recent research has been on `cyberspace' security
issues - from hacking through fraud to copyright policy - the field is
expanding to throw light on `everyday' security issues at one end, and
to provide new insights and new problems for theoretical computer
scientists and `normal' economists at the other. In the commercial
world, as in the world of diplomacy, there can be complex linkages
between security arguments and economic ends.
Program committee:
Ross Anderson (program co-chair) (Cambridge University)
Larry Gordon (program co-chair) (University of Maryland)
Marty Loeb (general chair) (University of Maryland)
Bruce Schneier (Counterpane)
Jean Camp (Harvard)
Doug Tygar (UC Berkeley)
Li Gong (Sun Microsystems)
Andrew Odlyzko (University of Minnesota)
Hal Varian (UC Berkeley)
If you would like to present a paper at the Workshop, please submit a
detailed abstract (PDF format perferred) to Dr. Martin P. Loeb,
General Chair by e-mail at mloeb(a)rhsmith.umd.edu by March 15, 2003.
