According to CISCO, the number of these devices will reach 50 billion by 2020, forming a very large Internet of Things (VLIoT). This massive number of "smart" objects will cooperate with each other, have their own metadata, and may continuously produce new data (in form of events, sensor data, or actuator states). Data management will be a major challenge in the very large Internet of Things. Hence, efficient IoT infrastructure and technologies must be developed to handle masses of IoT data with high performance. This will include: new techniques to filter and store relevant data; efficient replication approaches for objects with constrained resources in order to increase availability and durability; new protocols for voting about decisions among objects; and smooth integration of heterogeneous objects. The goal of this workshop is to bring together academic researchers and industry practitioners working in the field of IoT and to allow them to report and exchange their findings addressing these challenges. This workshop also intends to discuss other closely-related technologies such as Nanotechnology, Fog-, Edge-, and Dew-Computing for IoT. According to the American Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the majority of the victims in many different scenarios are untrained rescuers and even professional first responders. Accurate information gathered from sensors may allow first-responders and volunteers to make better and faster decisions, understand the situation, identify the rescue actions with higher success probability, correctly allocate resources such as number of ambulances, and prevent or mitigate personal risks. Today, even commonly available technologies, such as cellular phones, could save many lives if properly adopted. There is a compelling need of exploring the feasibility of new technologies, explicitly designed for working in emergency scenarios. Recently in this wide context, the aerial communication has significantly progressed due to longer battery life-time, new international law regulations and microelectronics evolution with lower prices and higher performance. In particular, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can easily and quickly reach far-away locations, scan carefully the area looking for injured people and autonomously create a communication bridge between first responder networks and victims. However, there are several unaddressed challenges on both communication and computational means that might further improve the reactiveness and efficiency of the first response after a natural disaster or human-driven threat. The workshop is focused on main upcoming activities about the involvement of UAVs as emergency communication means during emergency situations. It is open to both scientific and industrial communities, and will disclose the latest research achievements in the research field of fine-grained localization, advanced communication between moving objects and optimal UAV-cell coverage. The main motivation is to gather people involved in public safety innovative actions, encompassing both the mathematical frameworks and realistic solutions to bring intelligence and efficiency on board of UAVs. Such implementations will exploit further the capabilities of Mobile Edge Comping (MEC), wireless virtualization, and Software Defined Systems or Networks (SDNs) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) among others. Due to the non-linearity of the Quality-of-Experience (QoE) model, the resource manipulation with the solution provided within the context of SDN for MEC devices should be solved concurrently so that the associated performance can be assessed and evaluated. The inclusion of MEC, SDN, and NFV and its possible support for 5G systems are emerging as one of the highly active research areas with a large room for improvements. In addition, one important aspect of great importance is the continuously increasing processing, caching and storage capabilities required by emerging applications such as IoT and virtual reality. The purpose of this special issue is to provide the academic and industrial communities an excellent venue covering all aspects of current work on Fog Computing, Edge Computing and with the long-term architecture that will encompass the differently supported middleware(s). There are many recent examples of attacks that exploit IoT devices to perform large-scale distributed denial of service attacks, to spy on people, and to hijack communication links, therefore delivering full control of anything that is remotely accessible to an attacker. Those attacks deeply affect the operation of a number of services that are vital for the society functioning as energy, transport, communications, and so on. Moreover, IoT is largely used in monitoring activities of complex systems as smart city, industrial plant, health systems, bridges, and so forth. Because of that, if an IoT system experiences an attack, it should still exhibit resilience in the form of grateful degradation and/or survival and fast recovery (bounce-back/bounce-forward) of the functionality from the eventual failure or misbehavior. IoT resilience is here to understand the strategies and methods for a cyber-attack absorption and infrastructure operational recovery and needs to be considered as an integral part of the IOT Cyber Security landscape. The workshop focuses on both the theoretical & practical aspects of the security, privacy, trust and resilience of IoT networks, devices, applications, and services as well as novel ways of dealing with their vulnerabilities and mitigating sophisticated cyber-attacks.
