[Apologies, if you receive multiple copies of this CFP]
2nd ACM MobiHoc Workshop on Networking and Cybersecurity for Smart Cities (Securing Smart Cities) to be held on July 02-05, 2019 at Catania, Italy.
https://www.sigmobile.org/mobihoc/2019/workshop-Secure-Cities.html
Scope:
Cities have been incorporating new technologies for several years, but lately, the rate of technology adoption has increased and cities around the world are becoming connected and smarter. Furthermore, a plethora of networking technologies and connectable devices made it more convenient to build smart ecosystems and connected commodities that can help us predict the Smart Cities to become reality very soon. The key applications could be ranging from Smart Campuses for education, connected Hospitals for better treatment and medical information sharing among doctors & patients, Smart Watering & Gardening systems at the city level to preserve natural resources, smart fishing, Smart & connected transportation systems, and many more to name. Moreover, the Internet of Things (IoT) can bring noticeable efforts to connect various entities yet those efforts are prone to cyber-attacks. Likewise, every new technology and innovation brings new challenges and problems. In this workshop, we are focusing on networking and cybersecurity-related problems that currently affect or will affect cities in general around the world, whether considered smart or not. These problems would impact the city government, residents, and the businesses and other organizations that conduct business there. Keeping in mind the new technologies and life in a smarter city, let’s consider what could happen if one or more technology-reliant services don’t work. What would be commuting looks like with non-functioning traffic control systems, no street lights, and no public transportation? How would citizens respond to an inadequate supply of electricity or water, dark streets, and no cameras? What if garbage collection is interrupted in the summertime and stinks up the streets? We believe it would be unpleasant and cause a lot of chaos in any city.
We expect this workshop to be one of the key steps towards gathering researchers and developers to get under one roof and pave through the policy-making and providing interesting insights of the following topics, but not limited to:
Topics include, but not limited to:
- Networking and Security Framework for Smart Cities
- Cyber Security Challenges, Issues, and Solutions

CALL FOR PAPERS:
ITSC 2019 - The 22nd IEEE International Conference on Intelligent Transportation Systems
October 27-30, 2019. Auckland, New Zealand.
-------------------------------
Special Session on
*Beyond Traditional Sensing for Intelligent Transportation*
-------------------------------
Over the past few decades, sensors have not only become more advanced but also made impressive strides across an increasing number of sensing modalities.
Despite the improved capabilities and breadth of available sensor systems, those used for intelligent transportation have remained relatively uniform across platforms; as a result, the algorithms and techniques being designed do not take full advantage of the rich information modern sensors can provide.
Since all tasks -- including perception, localisation, decision-making, and learning -- are built on top of sensing, exploring alternative approaches to sensing is a compelling research area that can render all subsequent tasks more robust and accurate.
The objective of this special session is to explore unconventional sensing for intelligent transportation in three ways.
Firstly, it will investigate sensor systems that are not typically applied to certain transportation tasks, such as radar for precise localisation, audio for failure detection, and RF sensing for road traffic estimation.
Secondly, it will explore untraditional sensor configurations and placements, such as ground-facing cameras using shadows to detect occluded moving objects.
Lastly, it will look into the sensing of commonly overlooked information, such as the use of atmospheric sensors for gauging road surface traction or in-vehicle sensors for driving analysis.
Via these three themes, this special session aims to stimulate discussion and research into untraditional sensing in order to improve the reliability and accuracy of transportation systems.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Localisation and navigation using radars (e.g., scanning, Doppler, and ground-penetrating);
* Ego-noise and soundscape modelling and interpretation (e.g., sound-based failure detection, terrain/road surface status classification, urban sound source detection and localisation);
* Event-based (neuromorphic) vision for localisation and perception in challenging scenarios;
* Multi-spectral imaging (e.g. IR or polarimetric cameras for localisation and perception under difficult visibility);
* In-vehicle sensing and wearable computing for failure detection, driver and passenger behaviour modelling;
* Far infrared sensing;
* Texture odometry;
* Novel sensor hardware and designs;
* Unconventional sensor placements or multi-sensor systems;
* Optimal sensor scheduling and control in complex and/or multi-agent / social environments;
* Astronomical (skyward-facing), atmospheric or odor-based sensing;
* IoT technology for intelligent transportation and Internet of Vehicles (IoV);
* Passive Wireless/RF sensing.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is shaping the evolution of the future
Internet. According to the vision underlying the IoT, the next step in
increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after connecting people anytime
and everywhere, is to connect inanimate objects. By providing objects
with embedded communication capabilities and a common addressing scheme,
a highly distributed and ubiquitous network of seamlessly connected
heterogeneous devices is formed, which can be fully integrated into the
current Internet and mobile networks, thus allowing for the development
of new intelligent services available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and
anything.
Many applications with high social and business impact fall under the
IoT umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grid, surveillance,
home automation, intelligent transportation, while
it is expected that new ones will emerge once the enabling technologies

> Leveraging on the global interconnection of billions of tiny smart objects, the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm is fostering the idea of Pervasive Smart Systems (PSSs), where all the data gathered by different “things” can be analyzed and used to improve the livability, the safety and the security of the environment, and to make IoT user lives easier. However, despite the research advancements in recent years, many open issues still prevent the full realization of such vision.
>
> To meet the requirements of PSSs, telecommunication systems should deliver significantly high data rates, traffic capacity, connection density, energy efficiency, as well as small latencies. Being massively distributed into the environment, smart things may generate, collect, exchange and process big data, provide distributed services, offer computational resources, and cooperate to perform some tasks locally, as well as to delegate their execution to more powerful nodes in the cloud or at the network edge. In addition to the traditional pull-based data delivery, push-based and publish/subscribe traffic patterns must be supported. To accommodate newly emerging services, the network infrastructure should be agile, cost effective and possibly softwarized. Finally, meeting security and privacy requirements will play a fundamental role in the PSSs; indeed, without effective mechanisms, attacks and malfunctions in the IoT will outweigh any of their benefits.

> Technology succeeds when it provides benefits to the society either directly or indirectly. Understanding the societal and economic impact and human-centered aspects of a smart system or technology in advance and designing the system a-priori with potential value-added services help spur the discoveries of new tools, methodologies and innovative services. Smart service systems span across a variety of socio-technical facets comprising of devices, people, organizations, environments, and technologies to sense, actuate, control and assess the physical, cyber and societal artifacts of the human service systems. Besides the systems being self-adaptive and fault-tolerant, need to be designed in such a way that it can continuously increase the quality and productivity, the compliance and sustainability of the smart services it offers. While human-centered perspective and cognitive learning help create multi-facet value added services and catalyze the sustained economic growth of smart service systems, understanding the multi-modal sensing, control, heterogeneity and interdependency between different physical, virtual and logical components of such a complex system will enable the realization of new transformative smarter service systems. If successful, this can help improve the quality-of-service of the customers, quality-of-life of the citizens and quality-of returns of the stakeholders and investors.
> Nurturing the development of smart service systems seeks for inter- and trans-disciplinary crosscutting research threads from system and operational engineering, computer science and information systems, social and behavioral science, computational modeling and industrial engineering etc. The goal of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the fundamental knowledge and principles of smart service systems that enable the value co-creation in sensing, actuating, data analytics, learning, cognition, and control of human centric cyber-physical-social systems and future of work..

The Internet of Things (IoT) technology offers unprecedented opportunities
to interconnect human beings as well as Machine-to-Machine (M2M), whereby
sensors and networks allow all ‘things’ to communicate directly with each
other to share vital information allowing us to have an instrumented
universe where accurate data is readily available to inform optimal
decision making. The IoT is about to enable a range of new capabilities and
services far beyond today’s offerings. It will fundamentally change how
people go about their lives. According to Gartner, the number of objects
connected to the Internet is set to reach 20 billion by 2020. Cisco
estimates the number will be close to 26 billion objects by 2020. Others
believe the actual number will be even higher with the assumption that any
object with a simple micro controller and on-off switch will be connected
to the Internet in the near feature. The scale of the IoT is set to have a
major economic, social and environmental impacts; the intersection of which
forms the future sustainable growth. The IEEE International Workshop on
Internet of Things: Networking Applications and Technologies (IoTNAT 2019)
Symposium will be held in conjunction with The Second International
Conference on Fog and Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC 2019). The IoTNAT 2019
Symposium aims at soliciting original ideas on the broad area of IoT
including challenges and opportunities, concepts and applications and
future trends. The Symposium aims to facilitate discussions among academics
and IoT practitioners and make positive contributions to the field. Authors

IEEE LANMAN has an established tradition as a forum for presenting and
discussing the latest technical advances in local and metropolitan area
networking. Cutting-edge papers spanning both theory and experimentation
are solicited in all areas of networking. Papers are solicited in all
areas of networking, but in keeping with the heritage of this event,
this symposium’s central theme is *Network Infrastructure for a Smart
City*.
Recent technological advances present a unique opportunity to realize a
vision for future smart cities where resources are used optimally, new
avenues for economic growth and employment are created, and the overall
quality of life of the residents is improved. The Internet of Things
(IoT) and the integration of cyber and physical worlds that it
facilitates is a key enabler to make cities smarter, sustainable and
livable. To realize the vision of an IoT enabled smart city, technical
challenges related to scalable and pervasive connectivity for devices,
data management, storage and analysis, interoperability, platform
development, and standardization have to be addressed.
The intimate single-track format of the symposium encourages stimulating
exchanges between researchers. The event is expected to be a forum for
discussion of new and interdisciplinary ideas on network access
protocols, network management and control, services and applications,
performance related to IoT for smart cities. Speculative and potentially
transformative ideas are particularly encouraged, as are studies
reporting measurements from real-life networks and testbeds. Papers are

INTRODUCTION
-----------------------
As an emerged promising networking model, the Internet-of-Things (IoT) is a
novel paradigm to interconnect a multitude of heterogeneous physical
objects and devices. The IoT significantly provides an umbrella for a
series of critical building technologies including wireless sensor networks
(WSNs), fifth generation (5G) networks, and RFID. The philosophy of the IoT
is to develop an intelligent, dynamic, large-scale, and coherent network
framework for a wide range of applications and industries. Due to its
potential advantages and merits such as high reliability, good scalability
and intelligent capacity, the IoT has attracted great attentions and
interests from both academia and industry.
As the earliest IEEE international conference on Internet of Things, the
2019 IEEE International Conference on Internet of Things (iThings-2019)
