Fourth IEEE International Workshop
on
Pervasive Context-Aware Smart Cities and Intelligent Transportation Systems
(PerAwareCity2019)
[Along with IEEE Percom 2019]
March 11/15, 2019, Kyoto, Japan
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*
Cities and urban areas are an ideal platform for researchers and
practitioners to test new technologies, concepts and applications. In
Europe and the US, the population living in urban areas accounts for more
than 75 percent. As a consequence, applications that are targeting urban
areas can positively impact a significant fraction of the population in
terms of various social benefits. In addition, the majority of the planet’s
resources are consumed in cities. This, in turn, creates a significant
potential for reducing the environmental impact of mankind by enhancing and
optimizing the physical infrastructure digitally.
The ongoing advances in Pervasive Computing technology have delivered
interesting hardware platforms that are suitable for city-scale
infrastructure deployments. In addition, the success of mobile
communication devices and mobile broadband connectivity enables citizens to
tap into the digital resources that surround them anytime and anywhere.
Another foremost important technology for building future generation of
smart city applications is intelligent (real time) analytics and decision
making by processing streaming sensor data available from the surrounding
environment. Fleets of smart cars can be a distributed computational and
sensing resource. Also, increasingly large crowds of people are being
equipped with sensor-rich mobile and wearable devices, yielding Big Data
arising from such environments, e.g., GPS data and social activity data,
which can facilitate wide-scale crowd-sensing and crowdsourcing,
contributing towards data acquisition in smart city applications. With such
data, both centralized analytics and decentralized analytics could play a
key role in data sense-making and decision making. Also, such analysis can
be combined with data from increasingly deployed fixed sensors or IoT
infrastructure in the city.
Context-aware applications in the smart city are numerous, from
transportation, energy, safety to low-carbon living. There are many context
reasoning and data acquisition, analytics and knowledge management issues
in ITS and smart cities, such as architectural and algorithmic issues,
incentive mechanisms, energy-efficiency, data verification, complex
pervasive computing interactions, cost efficiency, urban data issues, data
privacy and security, to name a few.
Recently researchers are actively engaged in finding the applications of
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in solving various
data analytics and decision making problems related to Smart Cities which
can benefit the society as a whole. E.g, (a) efficient water quality
monitoring can ensure proper quality of water served for drinking, industry
or agricultural purposes depending on specific requirements; (b) efficient
healthcare assistant can track health status of elderly individuals staying
alone in home to make decisions during emergency events through continuous
learning; or (c) they can provide tailored services to patients in smart
hospitals, (d) intelligently choosing proper sensor or communication
interface depending on the data volume, communication requirement and
importance of the event, (e) providing intelligent road traffic routing
depending on action priorities of the user and based on the congestion
condition which can further depend on weather or any other unexpected
events, such as, accident, strike, etc.
This workshop will focus on bringing together researchers and
practitioners working on systems and applications in the Smart City domain.
All the architectural, networking and decision making aspects will be
investigated and discussed. Underlying structure of Smart City systems,
including different possible architectural models such as peer-to-peer,
location based, server oriented, and hybrid models will be studied. Almost
all smart city related problems, which are important for the societal
welfare, and could potentially be solved using AI techniques, can be
presented in this workshop by researchers from industry and academia. In
general, we want to focus on solutions of the following questions: (a) how
to design city-scale smart systems with autonomous coordination
capabilities; (b) how to develop intelligent decision making abilities in
emergency and safety-critical systems or during medium and large-scale
disasters, and (c) how to handle real-time conditions innovate computing
technology for diverse societal applications to improve the human
experience. We also hope to produce a post-workshop position paper
providing a summary perspective and future directions for work in the area.
A community of researchers and practitioners will also be created and
nurtured via this workshop.
Smart City as an emerging area attracts researchers to organize several
thematic workshops and conferences. The 3rd IEEE INFOCOM Workshop on Smart
Cities and Urban Computing is focusing on bringing together researchers in
the field of system, networking and communication to discuss major
challenges, research problems, and potential applications to support smart
cities and urban informatics. The First IEEE International Conference on
Smart City Innovations (IEEE SCI 2017) focuses on smart city related
applications and services. However, large scale data management and
decision making for smart cities is not receiving enough attention. So, in
this workshop, we propose to include the social good aspects of smart city
applications using AI or ML techniques which are novel concepts and will be
attractive to the community as a cross-disciplinary perspective. In
summary, this workshop is unique (different from other ITS and smart city
conferences) in its emphasis on the combination of context-aware computing,
ITS and smart cities (IoT), and aims to maintain the important link between
smart cities and pervasive computing.
Therefore PerAwareCity solicits papers addressing relevant topics,
including - but not limited to - the following:
Smart City systems and platforms
Experiences from real-world experiments and deployments
Smart City applications, e.g. smart traffic management, smart healthcare,
smart grid, smart waste management, Pollution control and management,
Environmental sustainability, Water quality monitoring, Criminal activity
profiling
Crowdsourcing and human computation
Internet of Things, Web and Linked Data technologies for Smart Cities
Big data in Smart City, Smart City Intelligent Data Processing
Cyber-physical systems and society
End user involvement, acceptance and user support aspects
Participatory sensing and processing
Sensor, Actuators and their networking in Smart Cities
Safety, security and privacy for Smart City applications
Scalability of Smart City systems and beyond (Smart Regions / Countries)
Adaptable, recoverable, and fault tolerant Smart City systems
Management, configuration, and deployment of Smart City infrastructures,
Smart Infrastructure Health Monitoring
We also welcome papers on novel applications or environments that have a
strong Smart City component, especially if those novel applications and
environments challenge existing ideas and design techniques.

Call for Papers
IEEE/IFIP WONS 2019 - The 15th Wireless On-demand Network systems and
Services Conference (WONS)
==============================================================================
http://2019.wons-conference.org/
Wengen, Switzerland
22-24 January, 2019
Wireless on-demand network systems and services have become pivotal in
shaping our future networked world. Starting as a niche application over
Wi-Fi, they can now be found in mainstream technologies like Bluetooth LE,
LTE Direct and Wireless LANs, and have become the cornerstone of upcoming
networking paradigms including mesh and sensor networks, the Internet of
Things, cloud networks, vehicular networks, disruption tolerant and
opportunistic networks, underwater and intra-body networks.
The challenges of this exciting research field are numerous. Examples
include how to make smart use of these novel technologies when multiple
technologies or a mix of permanent services and on-demand networking
opportunities are available to a network node, how to provide robust
services in highly dynamic environments, how to efficiently employ and
operate heavily resource-constrained devices, and how to develop robust and
lightweight algorithms for self-organization and adaptation. Finally, there
are many application-specific challenges.
WONS, now in its fifteenth edition, is a high-quality forum to address
these challenges. WONS aims to provide a global platform for rich
interactions between experts in their fields, discussing innovative
contributions in a stimulating environment.
This announcement solicits original contributions of high-quality research
providing novel insights on all aspects of wireless on-demand networks and
systems; from protocol and network design, modeling, performance
evaluation, energy efficiency, QoS models and mechanisms, practical
implementations, service level aspects, application use-cases, to the
integration of multiple wireless network technologies.

http://plus.shibaura-it.ac.jp/conf/casper2019/
in conjunction with 17th IEEE Conference on Pervasive Computing and
Communications, PERCOM 2019
March 11-15th 2019, Kyoto Japan
********************************************************************
Dear colleagues,
We would like to invite you to submit your work to the 6th International
Workshop on Crowd Assisted Sensing, Pervasive Systems and Communications (
CASPer 2019), held in conjunction with the 17th IEEE International
Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications (PerCom 2019). We
would appreciate if you could circulate this email to colleagues and
relevant mailing lists.
Call for Papers
With smart-phones in their pockets, more than 1 billion people now have
access to sensing, computation, and connectivity, making it possible to
harness the power of the crowd to collect and share data about their
surroundings and experiences on a massive scale. Crowdsensing/crowdsourcing
is a novel data collection paradigm that leverages this vast mobile sensor
network, making it possible to expand the scope of research endeavors and
address civic issues without requiring the purchase of specialized sensors
or the installation and maintenance of network infrastructure. Data
collected using such applications may come from unexpected yet interesting
and valuable sources and may allow for collecting data in previously
inaccessible locations and contexts.
This new data collection paradigm introduces several research challenges.
Privacy is a primary concern for users who contribute sensitive or
personally identifiable information (PII). Incentive mechanisms for
participation may be needed to encourage people to volunteer their
resources to collect data. Methods are needed for processing large-scale,
user-generated data sets into meaningful information, and for assessing and
understanding the quality of information to help guide decision-making.
Approaches, which involve the crowd in such data analysis tasks, with
humans serving as a source of semantic information, interpretation, and
evaluation of crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data, can also help to build an
understanding of the physical, computational, and socio-technical
environment.
At the same time, with the deployment of a tremendous number of sensing
devices collecting a huge amount of data for smart cities, smart home,
connected cars, e-halth or Industries, the Internet of Things is also
facing similar challenges regarding data privacy, scalability, data
processing or visualization. Thus, there is need to provide relevant data
science tools for citizens in order to extract all the properties of the
data and provide novel integrated services with data from the crowd or
sensors.
The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum for discussion,
debate, and collaboration focused on ideas, trends, techniques, and recent
advances in crowdsensing and crowdsourcing, as well as Internet of Things
and sensed devices. Similarly to our past editions, CASPer 2019 will also
feature an invited speech and a panel discussion devoted to the latest key
developments in the crowdsensing and crowdsourcing domain.
We invite original research contributions that advance the state-of-the-art
as well as position papers, which pose a new direction or present a
controversial point of view. Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:
- Algorithms to handle, process, and visualize large-scale
crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data sets, e.g. big data analytics in
crowdsensing/crowdsourcing
- Data integrity, security, privacy, and provenance for
crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data
- Trust and reputation systems for crowdsensing/crowdsourcing
applications
- Determining and assessing Quality of Information for
crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data
- Crowd-assisted (human-in-the-loop) approaches to analyzing
crowdsensing/crowdsourcing data
- Context modeling and reasoning in crowdsensing/crowdsourcing
applications
- Incentive mechanisms for participation in crowdsensing/crowdsourcing
applications
- Supporting crowdsensing/crowdsourcing in heterogeneous networks
- Crowd assisted pervasive systems and communications
- Novel use of sensors for crowdsensing/crowdsourcing applications
- Energy-efficient mechanisms for crowdsensing/crowdsourcing applications
- Programming abstractions and middleware for crowdsensing/crowdsourcing
applications
- Novel large-scale crowdsensing/crowdsourcing applications
- Citizen science and Data science tools for Crowdsourcing and
Crowdsensing
- Internet of Things, Decision Support System, sustainability support,
prototyping, test-beds, and real-world implementations.
Submitted papers must be original contributions that are unpublished and
are not currently under consideration for publication by other venues.
Submissions are limited to a maximum length of 6 pages and must adhere to
IEEE format (2 column, 10pt. font). Templates are available via the
workshop website. Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE PerCom

Smart spaces, such as smart cities, are proliferating into a massive
scale, thereby, IoT data, services and
applications are being pressed to move to the Cloud. IoT Cloud
integration has been recently extended from
the core of the network to the edge of the network (i.e., Fog Computing)
to address better mobility support,
location-awareness and low latency. Developing applications using cloud
and fog computing resources introduces
many challenges with respect to programming, networking, and service
abstraction and distribution.
In particular, in large-scale IoT applications with massive number of
services, the way to model, develop
and distributed services at device-, fog-, and cloud-levels is a top
priority design challenge in this area.
Topics include but are not limited to:
- Fog computing distributed architectures and frameworks
- Programming models and abstractions for Fog
- Dynamic programming models for Fog
- Fog-level task and service modeling and distribution
- Large-scale deployments and Fog
- Distributed resource management models for Fog
- Cloud and Fog integration
- Middleware for Fog infrastructures
- Fog mobility
- Performance (low latency and scalability)
- Heterogeneity and Interoperability of Fog devices
