-- Our sincere apologies if you receive multiple copies of the call --
BuildSys 2018 Call for Papers
Built environments and critical urban infrastructures, account for
over half of society’s energy consumption and are the mainstay of our
nation’s economy, security and health. Advances in the effective
integration of networked sensors, building controls, and physical
infrastructure are transforming our society. In the information age,
unprecedented research of cyber physical infrastructures includes: the
acquisition, integration, and analysis of big and heterogeneous data
such as sensors, devices, vehicles, buildings, and human, to tackle
the major issues that cities face, e.g., air pollution, increased
energy consumption and traffic congestion.
Systems optimization, data analysis and modeling applied to the built
environment are particularly important in improving our society, e.g.,
by increasing its sustainability and enhancing people’s
quality-of-life. These systems represent the foundation for emerging
“smart cities”.
The 5th ACM International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient
Built Environments (BuildSys 2018) will be held November 7-8, 2018 at
Shenzhen, China. This year at least five best papers in the ACM
BuildSys proceedings will be selected into the ACM Transactions on
Sensor Networks with minor revision, upon authors' agreement.
BuildSys is the premier conference for researchers and practitioners
working to develop and optimize smart infrastructure systems that are
driven by sophisticated sensing, computing, and control functions. We
invite original contributions including, but not limited to the
following:
* Applications in smart and connected communities;
* Sensing and control for urban infrastructure systems;
* Novel sensor methodologies, techniques, and tools;
* Sensing and control of electrical, gas, and water loads;
* Improved user interfaces to built infrastructure;
* Modeling, simulation, optimization, and control of heating, cooling,
lighting, ventilation, water usage and other resource flows in built
environments;
* Sensor systems and applications that enhance energy efficiency,
energy reliability, durability and comfort;
* Systems that integrate infrastructure with the smart grid to offer
demand response and ancillary services;
* Distributed generation, alternative energy, renewable sources, and
energy storage in buildings;
* Emerging standards for data collection, energy control, or
interoperability of disparate devices or systems;
* Sensing, modeling, and predicting the urban heartbeat including
sounds, movements, and radio spectrum;
* Human in the loop sensing and control for efficient usage of
electricity, gas, heating, water;
* Sensor systems for reliable occupancy counting;
* Long-lived and energy harvesting sensor systems;
* Scalable indoor localization and contextual computing;
* Security, privacy, safety, and reliability in built systems;
* Empirical studies of city-scale wireless communications;
* Environmental Sensing;
* Vehicle technologies and Traffic.
### Paper Types
We solicit two types of original submissions:
* Regular papers for oral presentation (10 pages)
* Notes papers for oral presentation (4 pages)
Notes papers are 4-page papers intended to discuss preliminary
research results, advocate new research directions, describe public
software or datasets, or present short projects that do not warrant a
10-page paper. Notes papers serve, in part, to encourage younger
researchers and research teams entering this field of research to
share their work. We also encourage Notes paper submissions from
industry participants that may not be able to devote resources to a
full paper. While Notes papers are not expected to have extensive
evaluations, they will be reviewed based on the novelty of their
ideas, potential for impact, and quality of presentation.
### Submission Guidelines
Submitted papers must be unpublished and must not be currently under
review for any other publication. Submissions must be full papers, at
most 10 single-spaced US Letter (8.5” x 11”) pages, including figures,
tables, references and appendices. Submissions for Note papers must be
at most 4 single-spaced US Letter (8.5"x11") pages, including figures,
tables, references and appendices. All submissions must use the LaTeX
(preferred) or Word styles found here. Authors must make a good faith
effort to anonymize their submissions by: (1) using the "anonymous"
option for the class and (2) using "anonsuppress" section where
appropriate. Papers that do not meet the size, formatting, and
anonymization requirements will not be reviewed. Please note that ACM
uses 9-pt fonts in all conference proceedings, and the style (both
LaTeX and Word) implicitly define the font size to be 9-pt. Please
refer to publication chair's Note as well as the User Guide of the new
class. Accepted submissions will be available on the ACM digital
library on the first day of the conference.
### Submission Link
All papers must be in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and
submitted through the web submission form:
https://buildsys18.hotcrp.com/.
For notes papers, the submission site has a checkbox called "Notes
papers." Those who submit notes papers need to check this box to
indicate their paper types.

Dear colleagues,
you are cordially invited to submit your latest research results to the
IEEE PIMRC 2018 Workshop on Small Data Networks
http://pimrc2018.ieee-pimrc.org/program/workshops/
<http://pimrc2018.ieee-pimrc.org/program/workshops/>
“Small data” refers to a rising paradigm in modern wireless networks,
pointing to information exchanged by smart devices and sensors in the
broad context of machine-type communications. Small data sets span
typically from metering data and status reports to remote commands and
data generated and transmitted within the IoT. They are generally
produced by a multitude of devices which access the communication
infrastructure sporadically, generating a massive amount of short
packets that have to be received with high reliability, exploiting the
available spectrum resources efficiently even in absence of
coordination. In such a framework, the design of the network protocol
departs from conventional approaches used for predictable and persistent
data sources. Major changes have to be applied to the physical and the
medium access control (MAC) layers to account for the sporadic nature of
the transmissions, touching all basic aspects from signal detection,
channel estimation, coding and modulation up to the medium sharing
policies and possibly involving the higher layers of the communications
stack. While traditional protocols treat interference as a waste and
therefore are designed to avoid them, in recent years several innovative
developments have been proposed, such as physical layer network coding
and various techniques based on successive interference cancellation
(SIC), where interference is instead embraced and creatively utilized.
These developments have opened a completely new perspective for
uncoordinated protocols, paving the way to dramatic performance
improvements, and rendering the throughput of interference-limited
channels competitive with respect to that of systems relying on
predictable data sources. This is calling for new studies on the
fundamental limits as well as on finding optimal ways of designing
waveform, signal-processing algorithms, error correcting schemes and
access protocols, and on theoretical tools to drive the system design.
Research in the field is further buttressed by clearly defined market-
driven goals from the industry, in the quest for highly reliable, highly
efficient, low-complexity access solutions for a massive number of
devices. The road towards 5G and more generally machine-type
communications represent only some relevant application examples where
upcoming research has the potential to leave a fundamental mark. The
goal of this workshop is to stimulate new contributions to the topic,
with emphasis on cross-layer interactions between the MAC and PHY layers
of the protocol stack, as well as on the connections to coding and
information theory.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
• Fundamental limits on communications for small data sets • Channel
coding and modulation for sporadic transmissions • Error control coding
for ultra-reliable communications
• Network coding in multiple access schemes
• Successive interference cancellation in MAC protocols • Wireless
access protocols for vehicular networks
• Wireless access protocols for machine type communications, large-scale
sensor networks, and IoT
• Innovative techniques for 5G and IoT radio access networks • Efficient
access schemes for short-packet communications • Energy efficient
MAC-PHY spatial processing
• Channel estimation and user detection for massive access
Submission Guidelines
Prospective authors are invited to submit technical papers of their
previously unpublished work. Accepted workshop papers will be part of
the Conference Proceedings and will be uploaded to IEEE Xplore. Papers

With the advances in computing and communication technologies, vehicle technology has entered a new era of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). While the host of technologies that are required to enable CAVs are many, they all share the same application area and include specific advancements that are more directly related to CAVs than to other cyber-physical systems. This symposium aims to bring together researchers who are working on different aspects of CAVs. IEEE CAVS is a symposium for reporting advances in all aspects of CAVs, including theory, tools, protocols, networks, applications, systems, test-beds and field deployments. Dear Colleagues,
SenSys 2018 solicits submissions of poster and demo abstracts reflecting
on-going research progress and/or demonstrating working prototypes. We
welcome submissions in broadly defined areas of interests (but not limited
to): systems of smart sensors and actuators, brand-new applications of
sensory devices, smart things, and smart infrastructure, and the underlying
research challenges in communication, networking, energy and resources,
data management, algorithms and machine intelligence, hardware designs, and
deployment on real environments.
Student participants will greatly benefit from the Posters and Demos
session; it will be a lively forum to present their work and receive early
feedback from international leading experts attending the conference. We
explicitly encourage submissions of revolutionary concepts, path-breaking
ideas, and ongoing research prototypes.
Major IT industry, as well as emerging technology startups, are also highly
encouraged to participate. SenSys is an ideal venue to present brand-new
products, early prototypes, new development platforms, or even ongoing
crowdfunding projects of smart platforms and solutions that might catalyze
future applications and/or disrupt today’s sensing and networking
technologies.
Submitted abstracts will be evaluated based on technical merit and
innovation as well as their potential to stimulate interesting discussions
and exchange of ideas. Authors of accepted abstracts will be given a
one-minute slot in a “madness session” during the conference to present
their work in front of the conference audience. As with previous editions
of SenSys, the best poster and demo will receive an award.
All abstracts shall be formatted according to the main conference paper
layout. Accepted abstracts will appear in the conference proceedings and
the ACM Digital Library.
