Overview
Wireless ad hoc networks have attracted considerable attention from the
research community in the last several years. Now that many of the
fundamental topics and challenges have been deeply investigated, the
focus is partially shifting to new issues, which include data-centric
operations, autonomous organization, service creation/support, continued
operation under intermittent connectivity, optimization, control,
cross-layer design and application scenarios (road safety, disaster
recovery, smart cities, energy efficient buildings, sensors, actuators,
wearables, etc.). Moreover, novel and exciting challenges are introduced
by commercial systems adopting the ad hoc paradigm, from mesh, sensor
and vehicular networks, and by associated delay-tolerant and
opportunistic scenarios. Furthermore, today's market explosion of smart
phones is creating new opportunities for wireless ad hoc social
networks, the study of which requires the combination of opportunistic
ad hoc networking aspects with the understanding of social
behavior and mobility patterns.
MED-HOC-NET 2014 focuses on all the ramifications of ad hoc networking
research, not only the classic topics of location management,
security/privacy, topology optimization/control schemes and resource
allocation, but also paying attention to novel emerging areas such as
green networking, safety/surveillance, underwater communications, and
coexistence among heterogeneous devices.
The Workshop is endorsed by the IEEE Communication Society and its
Technical Committees for Ad Hoc & Sensor Networks, Information
Infrastructure & Networking, and Radio Communication, and by IFIP.

Announcement and Call for Papers

UBICOMP 2014
http://www.ubicomp.org
The 2014 ACM International Joint Conference on
Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing
September 13-17, 2014, Seattle (Washington, US)
The 2014 ACM International Joint Conference on Pervasive and Ubiquitous
Computing (UbiComp 2014) invites submissions of papers concerning new
research contributions in ubiquitous and pervasive computing. UbiComp is
a premier interdisciplinary venue in which leading international
researchers, designers, developers, and practitioners in the field
present and discuss novel results in all aspects of ubiquitous and
pervasive computing. This includes the design, development, and
deployment of ubiquitous and pervasive computing technologies and the
understanding of human experiences and social impacts that these
technologies facilitate. Following the successful merger in 2013 of the
two most renowned conferences in the field, i.e., Pervasive and (the
former) UbiComp, UbiComp 2014 will be held from September 13 to 17 in
Seattle, Washington, USA, and as in past years will be collocated with
ISWC 2014 (with a single registration fee).
UbiComp 2014's papers and notes track welcomes high quality submissions
that describe original and unpublished research contributions advancing
the frontier of pervasive and ubiquitous computing. Relevant research
topics include, but are not limited to:
- Systems & infrastructures: descriptions of the design, architecture,
deployment, and evaluation of systems and infrastructures that support
ubiquitous computing
- Devices & techniques: descriptions of the design, architecture, usage,
and evaluation of devices and techniques that create valuable new
capabilities for ubiquitous computing
- Applications & experiences: descriptions of the design and/or
empirical study of applications that leverage Ubicomp devices and systems
- Methodologies & tools: new methods and tools applied to studying or
building Ubicomp systems and applications
- Theories & models: critical analysis or organizing theory with clear
relevance to the design or study of Ubicomp systems
A submission (full paper or note) should clearly compare and contrast
how the work relates to previous research and knowledge, what aspects of
the work are new, and the major contributions it makes. Authors should
write their paper for an interdisciplinary, international audience. All
submissions should not have been previously published nor be under
concurrent submission for publication for an archival track of any other
conference, journal, workshop or other publication that is part of a
formal repository (such as the ACM digital library).
***NEW for 2014*** To allow for more complete and fully formatted
reference lists, bibliographic references do NOT count toward the page
limit of 10 pages for full papers and 4 pages for notes. However,
references are limited to 2 total additional pages for full papers and 1
additional page for notes and must still be formatted in the ACM
double-column format. Therefore, the maximum total pages for full papers
will be 12 pages and 5 pages for notes (with only references allowed on
the final pages).
*** NEW for 2014 *** UbiComp 2014 will use a relaxed anonymization
policy. Author names/affiliations must not appear in the title area of a
paper-in-submission, but further anonymization is at the authors'
discretion.
UbiComp 2014 will continue to include a "revise & resubmit" phase as a
part of its submission and review process. While most papers will be
accepted or rejected at the program committee meeting, a select number
of papers will receive the opportunity to resubmit a substantially
revised version of their submission. A detailed meta-review will outline
necessary changes, which may include the need for further experiments
and/or significant manuscript re-organization. This process allows
flawed papers with significant potential a second chance at acceptance.
However, note that an invitation to revise and resubmit does not
guarantee acceptance.
Important Dates for UbiComp 2014 Papers and Notes track:
- ***NEW FOR 2014*** Abstract deadline - March 12, 2014, 17:00 PDT (It
is mandatory to submit a complete abstract before this hard deadline,
though minor changes to the abstract will be permitted)
- Paper deadline (submission only permitted if abstract was submitted as
above) - March 19, 2014, 17:00 PDT
- Author notifications (incl. "revise & resubmit" notifications): 8 May,
2014
- Revised papers/notes submission deadline: 4 June, 2014, 17:00 PDT
- Author notifications for revised submissions: 16 June, 2014
- Camera-ready deadline: 24 June, 2014
- UbiComp 2014 workshops and doctoral consortium: 13-14 September, 2014
- UbiComp 2014 main conference: 15-17 September, 2014

Special Issue on Networking and Communications for Smart Cities
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Smart Cities are technology-intensive cities in which the importance and role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is expanding. ICT plays a key role toward the sustainable development of new urban environments. Buildings with smart sensors and control systems can measure their environment and control it in real time (e.g. HVAC). Smart metering allows a utility company to match its production to the demand, dynamically. An electricity provider can influence both production and demand through the use of smart grid technology.
This special issue revolves on the following foundational question: what are the “unique” context characteristics, application and control needs, and traffic/user patterns in existing (and futuristic) smart city scenarios, which require a rethinking of networking and communication technologies and systems, as well as their relevant modeling and dimensioning methodologies?
----------------------------------------------
SCOPE
----------------------------------------------
The scope of this special issue is on purpose kept broad in terms of networking and communication technologies. Rather, perspective contributions are expected to sharply target aspects and requirements which clearly distinguish smart cities from general purpose networking and communication systems. We aim at assembling high quality papers which show how smart cities and sensor-generated traffic uniquely challenge current access and transport technologies and protocols, and bring about compelling solutions to such emerging issues, new modeling insights, new monitoring and control means, and so on. We especially welcome work devised to:
• explore how existing technologies and protocols need to be revisited/adapted to fit the urban cities requirements, or, conversely, highlight latest technology shifts or propose new context-specific solutions;
• provide experimentally supported models and feedbacks from urban-scale pilot and production deployments;
• address emerging new applications and/or new challenges.
----------------------------------------------
TOPICS OF INTEREST
----------------------------------------------
• Machine to Machine services/patterns and their communication and networking support
• Quality of Service, fairness provisioning and Service Level Agreementsfor dense deployments;
• Multi-client large-scale networks (fairness, cohabitation)
• Privacy for smart-metering (anonymity, presence detection, tracking)
• Co-located Networks and inter-technology interference;
• Multi-technology networks and inter-operability for the smart grid (e.g. PLC, IEEE 802.15.4, wirelessHART);
• Mobile wireless networks for car traffic surveillance and management;
• Emerging standards for urban wireless networks;
• Experimental network measurements and characterization for urban environments;
• Commercial applications, technological choices and success stories;
• Prototypes, testbeds and pilot deployments (e.g. smart-metering, smart buildings, public transportation);
Submission
The submission website for this journal is located at http://ees.elsevier.com/comcom. To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for consideration by the Special Issue, the authors should select "SpecialIssue: Smart Cities" when they reach the “Article Type” step in the submission process.

Introduction
The massive data streams and diverse modalities of digital information
sources being captured at an incredible rate have enriched the confluence
of ubiquitous computing, networking technologies, wireless sensor networks
(WSNs), data mining, machine learning, and data visualization and also
boosted many promising applications in environmental sensing, urban
mobility, transportation, emergency response, social networks, healthcare,
security, and IT infrastructure. However, the captured big data is usually
sparsely collected, noisy, incomplete, and untrustworthy. Moreover, the
sheer volume of sensor data, as well as its streaming and distributed
nature, raises many technical challenges of mobile sensing, data mining,
data visualization, and real-world applications. Government organizations,
commercial enterprise, and individuals rely on different technologies form
conventional wireless sensor platforms to smartphones to collect big
sensing data, extract knowledge from the big data, and visualize big data
from several perspectives so as to develop the expected applications in
pervasive environments. Several successful applications attract not only
the research efforts but also the industry investments for big data science.
As the big data science involved in developing applications for these
classes of problems lies at the intersection of several diverse
disciplines, the workshop aims at several important research topics,
including (1) data sensing : how to collect multi-dimensional and
high-quality data effectively, how to collect data without compromising
personal privacy, and how to design incentive sensing models which may
incorporate participatory sensing, crowdsourcing, cooperative and
opportunistic sensing technologies for Novel Applications; (2) data mining
: how current data mining, machine learning and knowledge discovery methods
can be extended to mining solutions for dealing with real-world problems,
how to infer human intentions, recognize activities and extract knowledge
from unstructured data, and how to design distributed, parallel, and
scalable mining algorithms to handle large, multi-modal, heterogeneous and
distributed streams of data; and (3) data visualization : how to visualize
heterogeneous streaming data in a real-time way, how to represent data in a
more intuitive way, and how to abstract key information to visualize the
relationship between data.
The 1st workshop on Mobile Sensing, Mining and Visualization for Human
Behavior Inference will serve as a forum for researchers and technologists
to discuss the state-of-the-art, present their contributions, and set
future directions in big data science. This workshop encourages authors to
develop real-world applications and evaluate their methodologies using the
real big datasets and investigate challenging problems based on large-scale
deployment in the real world. The topics of interest related to this
workshop include, but are not limited to:
- Mobile data collection models
- Participatory, opportunistic and collaborative sensing
- Mining large scale sensor data
- Activity recognition and subjective sensing for mobile and pervasive
applications
- Data mining techniques for real-world pervasive computing applications
- Unsupervised methods for discovering interesting patterns
- Supervised machine learning methods for analyzing data in pervasive
environments
- Streaming data visualization
- Visual search and recommendation
- Big data storytelling using visualization
- Scalable parallel visualization methods
- Test-beds and real-world deployments
- Big data sensing, mining, and visualization applications including cyber
intelligence, cyber security, business intelligence, e-commerce, scientific
data analysis, education, etc.
Submission Guidelines
The submitted paper should adhere to the double-blind review policy . All
papers will be double-blind reviewed by the Program Committee on the basis
of technical quality, relevance to the workshop scope, originality,
significance, and clarity. All paper submissions will be handled
electronically. Detailed instructions are provided on the workshop home
page. Papers that do not comply with the Submission Guidelines will be
rejected without review .
Each submitted paper should include an abstract up to 200 words and be not
longer than 12 single-spaced pages with 10pt font size. Authors are
strongly encouraged to use Springer LNCS/LNAI manuscript submission
guidelines (available at http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html )
for their initial submissions. All papers must be submitted electronically
through the paper submission system in PDF format only.
The submitted papers must not be previously published anywhere, and must
not be under consideration by any other conferences or journal during the
workshop review process. Submitting a paper to the workshop means that if
the paper is accepted, at least one author should attend the workshop to
present the paper. For no-show authors, their affiliations will receive a
notification. The program committee chairs are not allowed to submit papers
to the conference for a fair review process.
We will reach Springer to include outstanding papers from PAKDD workshops
in a LNCS/LNAI post Proceedings of PAKDD Workshops. The detailed
information will be announced later. Thus, each workshop is expected to
attract as many paper submission as possible in order to have high quality
