Call for Papers: The 1st Workshop on Robotic Sensor Networks
- part of CPSWEEK -
====================================================================
14 April 2013
Berlin (Germany)
http://www.cse.buffalo.edu/faculty/kdantu/rsn14/
Recent developments in sensing and actuation technology, along with
the miniaturization of computing and communication, have led to the
development of commodity robot technology such as hobby drones and
robot toolkits. These platforms are bringing sensing and actuation at
places where traditional technology does not reach; for example, for
aerial pollution monitoring or for disaster management in remote
areas.
This novel class of cyber-physical systems (CPS) take many of the
design, implementation, and validation issues of traditional CPSs to
an extreme. Control, sensing, estimation, and algorithms for
localization, mapping, navigation, and exploration of individual
robots are needed to govern their movements. The timing aspects of
vehicle operation are key to provide run-time guarantees about
performance. The software design and implementation must lead to
provably correct execution. Noisy or inaccurate information sensed by
the robots must be properly handled to ensure an accurate
understanding of the environment.
Research efforts to address the issues above, while related, have
previously progressed independently with little cross-fertilization
across diverse disciplines such as robotics, real time systems, signal
processing, and software development. The goal of this workshop is to
create a platform where researchers from different communities can get
together to better understand the latest developments in these related
fields as well as to establish connections for future
interdisciplinary work. The workshop intends to provide a platform to
enable such cross fertilization, to ultimately speed up the
development of the field and to foster rich interdisciplinary work in
the future. Particularly, co-location with the Cyber-Physical Systems
week will be an asset in this regard. CPSWEEK is the premiere CPS
event that brings together five top conferences from complementary
areas such as Embedded Systems, Real-time Systems, Sensor Networks,
Hybrid Systems, and Networked Systems.
To build the needed interdisciplinary work ultimately necessary to the
development of the field, the workshop seeks technical contributions
describing original, previously unpublished results in all topics
related to the design of robotic sensor networks, including works
across two or more of the following topic areas:
* Low-power communication in robot networks
* Programming of robot swarms
* Sensing coverage using robotic swarms
* Task allocation
* Distributed sensing
* Coordination in robot swarms
* Verification and validation
* Distributed planning and navigation
* Novel applications
* Experience reports

NOM 2013 Call for Papers
The 2nd Workshop on Name-Oriented Mobility (NOM): Architectures, Algorithms, and Applications
in conjunction with IEEE INFOCOM 2014
April 28 or May 2, 2014 Toronto, Canada
http://www.ieee-infocom.org/2014/Workshops_NOM.html
********************************************************************************
The second edition of the NOM workshop will be held on May 2nd 2014 in conjunction with the IEEE INFOCOM 2014 conference after the great success of its first edition that was held with the ACM MobiHoc 2013 conference. The NOM workshop is particularly interested in Information Centric Network (ICN) advances in support of the mobile and wireless space.
Name-oriented network architectures appear very promising for wireless and mobile networks, such as for instance IoT among wireless and mobile devices that could not scale well up till now, home networks among wireless and mobile hand held devices that constitute the majority of end-users devices, wireless sensor networks for smart spaces and vehicular networks which account a large, and exponentially increasing number of devices and connections that clearly suffer from the lack of mobility management in the IP architecture and the lack of an efficient data storage and sharing mean. Moreover, within the context of multimedia and video services and the huge demand for highly scalable and efficient distribution of content, ICN is promising in offering an alternative or complementing to the proprietary or specialized content distribution mechanisms, such as CDN and P2P systems, and aims for improved content access through general Internet mechanisms for content replication and!
dissemination among not only core network devices but also wireless edge network devices and wireless and mobile end-users devices.
We encourage submissions of high quality technical papers on mobile and wireless ICN work in the following topics:
- ICN mobile/wireless architectures and platforms
- Compelling applications and services for ICN for wireless and mobile networks (IoT, smart environments, home networks, ……)
- ICN deployment models for wireless and mobile networks (Clean-slate, evolutionary, …)
- Technical deployment of ICN into operational networks (specialized hardware ICN routers, ICN software into virtualized nodes, etc.)
- ICN scalability to high density network deployments (e.g. for IoT applications)
- Impact of ICN on mobile/wireless protocols and systems
- Mobility management in ICN considering multiple radio technologies
- ICN support for seamless and simultaneous connectivity across multiple links
- ICN tolerance to disruption in wireless and mobile links
- Policy management with ICN
- ICN in relation to CDNs and Cloud Services
- Cooperation between ICN and CDN networks
- Standardization efforts impacting mobile ICN
- Data naming and Objects Identification in wireless and mobile networks
- Radio resources management and congestion control
- Context-awareness in ICN
- Intelligent in-network Caching in ICN for better network resources optimization and user experience
- ICN role in wireless and mobile User Experience
- ICN Security and Privacy
- Forwarding strategies in wireless and mobile ICN
- Performance evaluation for wireless and mobile ICNs

Special Issue on Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS)
NEW DEADLINE: DECEMBER 15, 2013
http://www.comsoc.org/files/Publications/Magazines/ci/cfp/cfpcommag0814.html
Introduction
Successful city management relies on urban dynamics and social event monitoring to provide essential information for decision making. In traditional sensing techniques such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs), distributed sensors are leveraged to acquire real world conditions. However, static sensing is affected by several conditions, such as insufficient node coverage, high installation/maintenance cost, and lack of scalability. Mobile Crowd Sensing (MCS) presents a new sensing paradigm based on the power of various mobile devices/objects (e.g., smartphones, wearable devices, sensor-equipped vehicles, etc.). The sheer number of mobile device users and their inherent mobility enables a new and fast-growing sensing paradigm: the ability to acquire local knowledge through sensor-enhanced mobile devices ®C e.g., location, personal and surrounding context, noise level, traffic conditions, and in the future more specialized information such as pollution ®C and the possibility to share
this knowledge within the social sphere, practitioners, health care providers, and utility providers such as municipalities for example. The information collected by the mobile devices on the ground combined with the support of the cloud where data fusion takes place, make mobile sensing a versatile platform that can often replace static sensing infrastructures, and enabling a broad range of applications from urban dynamic mining, public safety, environment monitoring, just to name a few. Numerous and unique research challenges arise from the mobile crowd sensing paradigm ranging from participatory and opportunistic data collection, proper incentive mechanisms, transient network communication, and big data processing. By having human participation in the loop, several other issues regarding to the privacy and security of data (e.g., sensitive information such as human voice, location may be revealed), quality/trust of the data contributed (e.g., there might be fake or malicious
nodes involved) should also be addressed.
This feature topic issue provides the opportunity for researchers, practitioners, and application developers to review and discuss the state-of-the-art and trends of MCS techniques and applications or propose new solutions.
In the light of the above, the main purpose of this feature topic on Mobile Crowd Sensing is threefold:
-to promote unprecedented approaches and techniques in participatory and opportunistic data collection, communication, analysis, and visualization;
-to identify open issues which remain a challenge towards the convergence of information and communication technologies, privacy protection methods, social and psychological theories in MCS;
-to exploit novel application areas and demonstrate the benefits of MCS in contrast with more traditional static sensing approaches.
Topics may include (but are not limited to):
- Architecture/Framework Design
- Participatory Data Collection (node selection, data sampling, scheduling sensing)
- Opportunistic Sensing and Communication
- Sensor Performance and Types for MCS
- Incentive Mechanisms for MCS
- Communication in Weak/Transient Networking Environments
- Big Data Processing and Urban/Social Mining
- Privacy, Security, and Trust Issues in MCS
- Social and Psychological Issues in MCS
- Energy Efficiency in MCS
- Emerging/Novel Application Areas of MCS
- Performance Evaluation of MCS
Submissions
Papers must be tailored to the problems of mobile crowd sensing and explicitly consider above issues. The editors maintain the right to reject papers they deem to be out of scope of this special issue. Only originally unpublished contributions and invited articles will be considered for the issue. The papers should be formatted according to the IEEE Communications Magazine guidelines (http://www.comsoc.org/commag/paper-submission-guidelines). Authors should submit a PDF version of their complete manuscript via Manuscript center (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/commag-ieee ) according to the timetable below. Select the category °∞August 2014/Mobile Crowd Sensing°± when submitting your manuscript.
