News
• 3 keynote speakers: Holger Boche (Technical University Munich), Leandros Tassiulas (University of Thessaly),
Jean-Pierre Hubaux (EPFL)
• Technical co-sponsorship: IEEE Information Theory Society and IEEE Control Systems Society
Papers will be published in IEEE Xplore.
WiOpt 2012 intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working on modeling and optimization of wireless network design and operations. It welcomes original, high-quality work on different perspectives, including performance analysis and simulation, algorithms and protocol design, optimization theory and application, information-theoretic analysis, for all forms of wireless networks.
Contributions to the symposium should improve the state of the art in design, analysis, dimensioning, and operations of wireless network by providing insights into theoretical aspects or providing practical methods and tools. All forms of wireless networks are of interest: from cellular to ad hoc networks; domain-specific vehicular, public-transport, and personal-area networks as well as application-specific sensor networks.
Topics of relevance include, but are not limited to, the following
• Asymptotic system properties, e.g., capacity, connectivity, coverage, delay
• Cognitive radios
• Cross-layer design and optimization
• Dynamic spectrum management
• Energy efficiency
• Game theoretic models, contract, pricing, and incentives
• Interference in wireless networks
• Mobility modeling and management
• Modeling, simulations, and performances analysis
• Network and multi-user information theory
• Network protocol design
• Opportunistic and cooperative communications
• Optimal control of network operations
• Optimization of network design
• Routing protocols
• Scalability and manageability of network architectures
• Security in wireless networks
Technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, which are not currently under review by another conference or journal are solicited.
The submission format for the papers is an extended abstract, up to eight pages long. Please use 11 pt character size, one column text, double spacing, and letter paper. This page budget should contain all figures, tables, references, etc. The extended abstract should include a brief abstract of up to 150 words. The submission will be handled via EDAS. Only PDF files are acceptable; please make sure that the paper prints without problems (take care to embed all required fonts, etc.). Full papers, of up to 8 pages, in IEEE conference double column format, will be published in the conference proceedings and will be available via the IEEE Xplore website.

Energy Efficiency in Wireless Networks & Wireless Networks for Energy
Efficiency
E2Nets June 10-15, 2012 Ottowa/Canada

Paper Submission Link: http://edas.info/N11457
* Paper Submission Deadline: December 20, 2011
* Notification of Acceptance: January 31, 2012
* Camera-Ready Submissions: February 10, 2012
The two seemingly distinct topics of E2NETS are very important for overall
energy efficiency in the future. Instead of looking at them separately, it
is useful to arrange a venue for the researchers and practitioners in these
two fields to come together and interact. This workshop aims to build this
cooperation. Energy Efficiency in Wireless Networks: According to the GESI
study, the ICT sector contributes around 2% of global greenhouse gas
emissions. To increase the competitiveness, energy efficiency (E2) must
also be a design criterion of the network and service architectures.
Flexible networks that adapt their capacity to the requirements can lead to
significant energy savings. Novel networking paradigms need to be
introduced to assure that all components are used with maximum utilization.
E2 network architectures will be the cross-layer, cognitive and cooperative
aggregation of techniques and mechanisms to provide a communication
infrastructure where the energy consumption is minimized while guaranteeing
the grade of service required by the applications. Along with energy
efficiency, spectrum utilization is to be optimized and radiation is to be
minimized.
In E2Nets, the following topics of energy efficiency in sensor, mesh, and
ad-hoc networks are considered:
* Physical layer techniques, channel or network coding for energy efficiency
* Methodologies and architectures for energy efficiency
* Energy-efficiency measures
* Energy-efficient flooding and multicast
* Energy-efficient device and service discovery
* Collaborative, cooperative, cognitive networking protocols for energy
efficiency
* Algorithms for scheduling and resource management
* Energy harvesting
* Cognitive networking for energy reduction in large scale environments
* Device level collaboration and cognition for energy efficiency
* User mobility modelling to predict and adapt to patterns
* Hybrid fibre-wireless networks for energy-efficient delivery of wireless
signals
* Energy efficiency in sensor networks, ad hoc networks, mesh networks and
vehicular networks.
To address the other 98% of the global CHG emissions, wireless networks can
be used to reduce the energy consumption of industrial, home, office
environments, applications. For example, along with the research in
low-carbon road transportation technologies, wireless networks can be
employed to analyze the traffic jams and help navigators to find a suitable
route leading energy savings. To this extent, in this workshop the topics
of wireless networks for energy efficiency consist of:
* ICT for minimization of the energy consumption of other systems such as
transportation, houses, offices and industrial buildings.
* Energy efficient cloud computing, smart grids and emerging applications,
* Sensor networks for energy efficiency in industrial/harsh environments
* Vehicular networks to reduce the CHG emissions
* Energy efficient virtualization of resources
* ICT for energy-efficient data centers

Call for Papers
IEEE Communications Magazine
Consumer Communications and Networking Series
Submission Deadline: Jan 15, 2012
Recent trends in consumer networking are that consumers are both
creators and producers of content (albeit of varying quality!) and peer
distribution is the natural model. This is one of the emerging trends
that impact how consumers can use devices to create, manipulate, store,
and access content — and is surely a much different view compared to
only five years ago where most experts still viewed the world in terms
of servers and clients, producers and consumers as distinct and separate
entities. Indeed, there are still dinosaur organizations out there today
who are fighting a rearguard action to protect their dwindling revenue
streams because they haven’t been brave enough to embrace this new
model. Trends like this are ones that papers for the consumer
communications and networking series should address.
We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being
applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives
are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation
between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the
automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks
designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide area
communications via satellite networks. Using these networking
capabilities and interfaces such as USB we see automobile functionality
being extended. In this sense the boundaries between the car and
conventional consumer devices are beginning to blur.
Perhaps the sole technology responsible for the many technological
advances we see today is communications. Example communications
technologies include the emergence of 3G and 4G, LTE and WiMax,
Bluetooth, Zigbee, Ultrawideband, TV-band, and Powerline and Free space
optical. Applications of these technologies include personal and body
area networking, home networking, game networking, ad-hoc networking,
and sensor networking. These networks may be connected through
networking layers that are cognitive, peer-to-peer enabled, and have the
properties of self organisation and management. These networks will
become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content
distribution models, for example, television can now be viewed wherever
we are and on any devices capable of connecting to one of the many
networking paradigms defined above. With these networks we can expect a
platform for true innovation where content distribution will overlay
these networks using compression, rights management, delivery, and
appropriate quality of service mechanisms that can be seamlessly moved
over these next generation networks. All of this is made possible by
networking, software and middleware that present to the service designer
the tools to provide ease of use, security, and stunning interactivity
to the end consumer.
With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking papers
that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it
finds itself. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the
following:
Scope of Contributions
• Wireless Multimedia Networks
• Body and Personal Area Networks
• Mobile Networks and Multimedia
• Emerging Wireless Technologies (UWB, OFDM, RFID, Zigbee, etc.)
• Distributed Network Protocols for Multimedia HD Audio/Video Networking

Streaming, Networking and Applications
• Home Networking and Automation
• Next Generation Networks
• Pervasive Computing and Contextual Systems

• Music and Movie Distribution Models
• Augmented Reality
• Task Computing and the Home
• Home Sensor Networks
• Autonomic Home Networking
• Zero Configuration Networking
• Digital Rights Management

Articles should be tutorial in nature, with the intended audience being
all members of the communications technology communities. They should be
written in a style comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of
the article. Articles should not exceed 4500 words. Figures and tables
should be limited to a combined total of six. Complete guidelines for
prospective authors can be found at:
http://dl.comsoc.org/livepubs/ci1/info/pub_guidelines.html. Please

Call for Papers for MobiCom 2012
The Eighteenth Annual International Conference on Mobile
Computing and Networking
Late August/Early September 2012, Istanbul, Turkey
http://www.sigmobile.org/mobicom/2012/
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
ACM MobiCom 2012, the Annual International Conference on Mobile
Computing and Networking, is the eighteenth in a series of
annual conferences sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE dedicated to
addressing the challenges in the areas of mobile computing and
wireless and mobile networking. The conference will be held in
Istanbul, Turkey, in late August 2012.
The MobiCom conference series serves as a highly selective,
premier international forum addressing networks, systems,
algorithms, and applications that support mobile computers
and wireless networks. Besides the regular conference
program, MobiCom 2012 will also include a set of workshops,
panels, research demonstrations, and a poster session that
includes the ACM Student Research Competition. More information
on these activities, including submission deadlines, can be
found at http://www.sigmobile.org/mobicom/2012 (available soon).
PAPERS:
Authors are invited to submit full papers presenting
new research related to the theory and practice of mobile
computing and wireless networking that pertain to the layer
two or above of the OSI protocol stack. Areas of interest
include, but are not limited to the following.
* Architectures, protocols, and algorithms for various wireless
and mobile networks, such as wireless LANs, wireless mesh
networks, cellular data networks, delay-tolerant networks,
mobile ad hoc networks, sensor networks, personal area
networks, and vehicular networks
* System design, implementation, and evaluation of wireless
systems and mobile applications
* Real-world measurements and characterization
* Performance-oriented design and evaluation focused on
networks and mobile applications
* Foundational underpinnings of wireless networks
* Testbed design and implementation

* Networks involving novel technologies such as UWB, MIMO,
directional antennas, software radios, visible light
communications and underwater networking
* Architectures, algorithms and protocols for dynamic spectrum
usage, white spaces, and cognitive networks
* Techniques that deal with low power and energy limitations
* Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing
and networking
* Security, privacy, and trustworthiness of mobile and wireless
systems
* Emerging topics, e.g., robotic swarms, 60 GHz networking,
social networking and novel applications enabled by mobile
and wireless networking systems
* Integration and interworking of wired and wireless networks
* Foundational underpinnings of wireless networks
MobiCom’12 will be a diverse conference and we strongly encourage the
submission of mobile systems, experimental and theoretical papers. The
program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are
appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or
experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the
innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and
realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be
evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the
algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the
evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is
challenging because of the significant impact that the physical
environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must
carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used
and identify its strengths and weaknesses.
The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted
papers will be published in the conference proceedings.
Selected outstanding papers will be fast-tracked for publication
in a special section of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing.
CHALLENGES PAPERS:
The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in
the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present
revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions
prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should
provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues
and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new
products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for
papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the
proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of
the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by
the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical
program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be
submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full
papers. The title of these papers must start with the word
"Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title."
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:
All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should
prepare a PDF version of their full paper. Papers must (i) be no
longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers), (ii) be in
font size no smaller than 10 points, (iii) have pages in double column
format with each column having dimensions 9.25” X 3.33”, a space of
0.33” between the two columns, and with no more than 55 lines of text
per column, and (iv) fit properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5” X
11”). More detailed instructions will be available in the conference
web pages.
All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality
through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the
authors are withheld from the reviewers. See the MobiCom 2012
website for detailed instructions to authors on preparing a
double-blind manuscript. Authors' names must not appear
anywhere in the paper or in the PDF file. Submitted papers
must be original work, and a paper with substantial similarity
must neither be already published, nor be currently under
review for publication in any other venue. Please direct any
questions about the paper submission process to the Program
Co-Chairs at mobicom_pcchairs(a)acm.org.
BEST PAPER AWARD:
All papers will be considered for the Best Paper Award. The program
committee will select a number of candidates for the award among
accepted papers. The winner will be selected at the conference,
considering both the paper and the presentation. The winner will
receive a plaque and a cash award.

CALL FOR PAPERS
WWIC 2012
10th International Conference on
Wired/Wireless Internet Communications
http://www.wwic2012.org
sponsored by IFIP
June 6-8, 2012
Island of Santorini, Greece

***** NEW SUBMISSION DEADLINE: DECEMBER 23, 2011 *****
_____________________________________________
Internet is being extended beyond its traditional boundaries (i.e.,
areas with network infrastructure) through gradually incorporating a
wide-range of challenging networks and autonomous devices. From
traditional wireless networks to opportunistic networks of mobile
devices in urban environments and deep-space communications, the new
approaches require an efficient merging with the traditional wired
infrastructure. The need for novel all-weather protocols, clean-slate or
evolutionary architectures, merging and assembling of different network
technologies, unified operation and management of the heterogeneous
components and the support for new multimedia services are only few
examples of the wide range of technologies building-up this new global
network. WWIC addresses research topics such as the design and
evaluation of protocols, the dynamics of the integration, the
performance tradeoffs, the need for new performance metrics and
cross-layer interactions. This year, we particularly emphasize on areas
such as Delay- and Disruption-Tolerant Networks (DTNs) and Opportunistic
Networks.
The goal of the conference is to present high-quality results in the
field of global internetworking, and to provide a framework for research
collaboration through focused discussions that will designate future
research efforts and directions. In this context, the program committee
will accept only a limited number of papers that meet the criteria of
originality, presentation quality and topic relevance. WWIC is a
single-track conference which has reached, within 9 years, a high
quality level, which is reflected both on the level of participation as
well as on the acceptance ratio and the amount and quality of submitted
papers. Following the conference tradition there will also be a best
paper award.
Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings published by
Springer in the Lecture Notes of Computer Science (LNCS) Series.
Extended versions of selected papers will be considered for publication
in a special issue of an international journal.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- AAA in mobile environments
- Ad-hoc mobile networks
- Blended network configurations
- Cloud and data center computing
- Content-centric networking

First IEEE International Workshop on Energy Harvesting for Communications
In conjunction with IEEE ICC 2012, Ottawa, Canada, June 2012
CALL FOR PAPERS
The first IEEE International Workshop on Energy Harvesting for Communications (IWEHC) will be held in conjunction with the IEEE ICC 2012 in Ottawa, Canada. All papers will be peer reviewed by TPC members and other experts in the field. Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings and on the IEEE Xplore website.
Scope:
Energy Harvesting Communications (EHC) offers the tantalizing possibility of perpetual operation, as the communication nodes only use energy harvested from their environment for processing and communication. However, the energy harvesting process may be sporadic, due to which nodes may temporarily run out of energy. Algorithms and protocols need to be designed that are robust to the sporadic and possibly limited energy resources available for sensing and communication.
This workshop aims to bring together academic experts and industrial researchers interested in the design and development of EHC. It will create a forum where the researchers working on this topic can share their results and collectively identify design principles for optimizing the performance of EHC.
Topics include (but are not limited to):
* Physical layer protocols, link-layer algorithm design and analysis
* Modeling energy harvesting processes and their role in optimizing the communication performance
* Energy harvesting sensor design for body area networks
* Fundamental information theoretic limits of EHC
* Sensing accuracy – throughput (rate-distortion) trade-off analysis
* Harvesting-Aware MAC and routing protocols
* Cooperative communications and relaying using EHC
* Quality of Service in EHC systems
* Lifetime enhancement of conventional networks using EHC
* Implementations, Testbeds and Experimental results
* Novel applications of EHC
