In particular, geosensor networks and public sensing have evolved as novel and important research fields. They offer applications easy and efficient access to sensor data at the scale of billions of sensing devices. This data is of high relevance to a wide spectrum of applications, for instance in the field of environmental monitoring, traffic control, and smart energy grids. It is of high importance that communication architectures and services for enabling such systems are highly scalable and able to cope with massive amounts of sensor data in order to meet the requirements of emerging applications. These requirements range from hard performance and quality demands to ensuring security and privacy for the provided data. They are particularly difficult to meet in the face of the heterogeneity of sensors, sensor networks, and communication architectures. Coping with these challenges requires an integrated research effort involving researchers from a wide spectrum of different research fields. This workshop aims at bringing researchers and practitioners together that are working in areas such as sensor networks, architectures and services for the Future Internet, P2P overlays, complex event and stream processing, pervasive computing, and novel communication paradigms like opportunistic and delay tolerant networking. You are invited to present your current work in the area of global sensing, to discuss and identify main challenges, and to foster new cooperation in the field. WORKSHOP TOPICS The workshop is seeking contributions related but not limited to the following list of topics in the domain of architectures, applications, and services for global sensing: - Sensor networks - Public Sensing - Geosensor networks - Middleware for global sensing - Services and service provisioning for global sensing - Communication architectures for global sensing - Delay tolerant and opportunistic networking for global sensing - Complex event and stream processing - P2P overlays for global sensing - Quality for global sensing - Security aspects in global sensing SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Papers should be submitted in PDF format via the workshop page. Contributions may present i) novel and possibly preliminary research results (10 pages), ii) position papers describing major challenges (10 pages), iii) new trends from the industry (2 pages). Each submission will be reviewed by three members of the program committee. Papers are selected according to their originality, quality, and relevance to the workshop topics. Accepted papers will appear in the KIVS Workshop proceedings. For accepted papers, at least one author must register with the workshop and give a presentation at the workshop. Workshop papers are planned to be published in the open access journal ECEASST and will also be distributed to the participants of the conference in electronic form. The WiMAX, LTE, and LTE-Advanced standardizations have already processed toward this direction but still require significant improvements. Network planning and optimization faces many challenges arising from the use of new air interfaces and new technologies (e.g., MIMO, smart antennas, cooperative relay), the mix of voice, video and data traffic, the co-existence of different RATs (Radio Access Technologies), the growing importance of indoor coverage and the paradigm shifts (e.g., femtocells). The future wireless networks cannot operate efficiently, unless these challenges are properly addressed. This workshop will bring together both the mobile communications industry (operators, telecom vendors, radio network planning and optimization consulting firms and tool producers) and academia to present and discuss the problems, challenges, directions, and state-of-art in the fields of future wireless communication networks deployment, planning and optimization. Topics of interest relating to network planning and optimization and future wireless communications are (but not limited to): * Automatic UMTS/HSPA/LTE/LTE-A/WiFi/WiMAX radio network planning and optimization methods * The use of measurements in radio network planning and optimisation * Indoor network planning and optimization (BBU+RRU, repeaters, DAS, picocells and femtocells) * Heterogeneous wireless networks (UMTS/HSPA/LTE/WiFi/WiMAX/DVB) simulation, planning and optimization * Self-configuration, self-optimization and self-healing in LTE and LTE-Advanced networks * Traffic modeling and real network traffic scenarios **Submission Guidelines** PlanNet accepts only novel, previously unpublished papers. Submissions must include an abstract, five to ten keywords, the e-mail address of the corresponding author and should not exceed 5 pages, including tables and figures (up to 2 extra pages at additional cost) in standard IEEE camera-ready format (double-column, 10-pt font). Over the years, the wireless networks have not only expanded in their sizes, such as geographical area and number of nodes, but also in the variety of services, users, and deployment environments. Small mobile devices, such as smart phones, that allow instantaneous high speed information access and data processing have radically changed the way of our living. Moreover, the development of ad-hoc networks allows the easy formation of wireless networks for information sharing and data gathering. Due to various factors, wireless networks are constantly changing. For example, the service pattern, workload, available resources (power supply, bandwidth, beacons, nodes etc.) are not fixed. Therefore, it is important to be able to access and manage the quality of services for ensuring the optimal performance of the networks. There are basically two aspects to QoS study in wireless networks. One aspect is accessing and diagnosing the status of the networks and evaluating the current level of service quality. The other aspect is to study the network design to handle the changing factors of the networks so that the quality of service is optimized under the constraint of the available resources and service pattern. The quality of service management and diagnosis of a network is closely related to wide range of fundamental issues such as network topology, routing protocols, resource allocation, communication layer, and working environments etc. The contributed papers will study both practical and theoretical models and algorithms for ensuring the high quality of service in wireless networks and the approaches for quality of service evaluation and diagnosis. Mobile application developers face numerous challenges related with location and context awareness, personalization, mobile data management, porting over multiple platforms, devices fragmentation, etc. Service providers are responsible for application management, deployment models and middleware support. Area A: Hardware/Software Integration and Co-Design. This track focuses on design methodologies and tools for hardware/software integration and co-design of modern embedded systems for real-time applications. Such systems are increasingly complex and heterogeneous, both in terms of architectures and applications they need to support, so new approaches aimed at their efficient design and optimization are in great demand. General topics relevant to this track include various architecture- and software-related issues of embedded systems design which include, but are not limited to, architecture description languages and tools, WCET analysis, software architectures, design space exploration, synthesis and optimization. Of special interest are SoC design for real-time applications, special purpose functional units, specialized memory structures, multi-core chips and communication aspects, FPGA simulation and prototyping, software simulation and compilation for novel architectures and applications, as well as power, timing and predictability analyses. Area B: Wireless Sensor Networks. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has emerged as a new information paradigm for distributed real-time and embedded systems. Example applications include environment monitoring, emergency response, critical infrastructure protection, medical care, intelligent transportation, and smart manufacturing. The WSN track aims at fostering interaction and collaboration of researchers and exchanging new ideas in various aspects of sensor network research. The WSN track of RTAS is open to submissions addressing any major aspect of sensor networks. Submissions concerning real-time and embedded issues are encouraged, but not required. Authors are invited to submit original works that demonstrate current research on various aspects of wireless sensor network systems. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): sensor network applications and deployment experiences; sensor network architectures and protocols; programming abstractions; operating systems and middleware for sensor networks; real-time operation issues in sensor networks; distributed networked sensing; actuation and control; power and energy management/harvesting; wide-area sensing services; detection, classification, and estimation; localization and time synchronization; security and privacy. The 2011 Pervasive Healthcare conference aims to gather technology experts, practitioners, industry and international authorities contributing towards the assessment, development and deployment of pervasive medical based technologies, standards and procedures. The theme of this year’s conference is: Coping with the Challenges and Opportunities within Pervasive E-Healthcare (COPE), with a special focus on pervasive healthcare management and its ability to deliver timely, quality based information to medical practitioners in providing high levels of patient care. The challenges and opportunities within e-Healthcare are immense. A multidisciplinary and coordinated approach is needed from 1) user requirements, 2) technology development and 3) application integration, to help deliver a successful pervasive healthcare management system. Traditional healthcare environments are extremely complex and challenging to manage, as they are required to cope with an assortment of patient conditions under various circumstances with a number of resource constraints. Pervasive healthcare technologies seek to respond to a variety of these pressures by successfully integrating them within existing health care environments. Technologies, standards and procedures on their own provide little and or no meaningful service.
