CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on
Technologies for Green Radio Communication Networks
IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine
Since 2006, data traffic on wireless networks has grown by approximately
400% and is expected to continue to increase rapidly in the coming
years. The widespread use of complex, spectrum efficient techniques to
support such high data volumes, the demand for higher data rates and the
ever-increasing number of wireless users translate to rapidly rising
power consumption. Currently consuming 3% of the energy and causing 2%
of the CO2 emissions globally, the Information & Communication
Technology (ICT) industries are facing an increase in associated energy
consumption of 16-20% per year. Furthermore, the energy costs for mobile
operators can be as high as half of their annual operating budgets. The
foregoing considerations highlight the urgent need for focusing on
energy efficiency.
While there is much leeway for developing energy efficient and low power
solutions for wireless networks, such as based on cognitive radios,
multi-hop relaying, cooperative communications and MIMO systems, today's
communication networks are not much considering energy consumption
issues into their design or development. The main reason is that this
topic is not yet a focus of practical work and so far no solid research
work has given support and evidence for any technique of reducing the
overall system energy consumption. This Special Issue will assemble
high-quality research articles as well as comprehensive survey papers on
recent technological advances in the field of Green Radio Communication
Networks. These contributions will serve as valuable references and
trend indicators for researchers and engineers from both industry and
academia. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
. Current view and impact of energy consumption in wireless
communications networks
. Trends and challenges of achieving low energy consumption in
wireless networks
. Energy efficiency metrics and measurements in wireless networks
. Energy efficient network concepts and architectures.
. Relaying, cognitive, cooperative and MIMO techniques
. Self-organizing/optimizing networks
. Energy efficient hardware, devices and designs
. Interaction of wireless networks with smart grids and power
management
. Regulation and standardization
. Test-bed, experimental results, and hardware prototypes
. Applications and business models of energy efficient wireless
networks
. Operators' experience
. Coordinated power control for network-wide energy optimization
. Energy minimization of system-wide components
. Relationships between energy efficiency and spectrum efficiency
Prospective authors should follow the IEEE Wireless Communications
Magazine manuscript format described at
http://www.comsoc.org/livepubs/pci/info/sub_guidelines.html. Articles
should be tutorial in nature to help readers outside the specialty of
the field to gain a clear and good understanding of the topic.
Electronic submissions in PDF format is strongly encouraged and should
be sent by email to ehjchong(a)ntu.edu.sg with cc to all the guest editors.

Betreff: [Tccc] CFP: Feature Topic Issue of IEEE Communications Magazine
Datum: Wed, 15 Sep 2010 13:46:33 +0800
Von: Jun Zheng <junzheng(a)seu.edu.cn>
An: <tccc(a)lists.cs.columbia.edu>
Call for Papers
IEEE Communications Magazine
Feature Topic Issue on The Internet of Things
The Internet has experienced a tremendous growth in the past three
decades, evolving from a network of a few hundred hosts to a platform
linking billions of “things” globally, including individual people as
well as enterprises of various sizes, through computers of any
conceivable size and capability and the applications running on them.
The growth of Internet shows no signs of slowing down and it steadily
becomes the cause of a new pervasive paradigm in computing and
communications. This new paradigm enhances the traditional Internet into
a smart Internet of Things (IoT) created around intelligent
interconnections of diverse objects in the physical world, such as
vehicles, cellphones, habitats and habitat occupants, through low-cost
information gathering devices, such as sensors and RFID tags, that
facilitate fast-paced interactions among the objects themselves as well
as the objects and persons in any place and at any time. IoT will usher
a wide range of smart applications and services to cope with many of the
challenges that individuals and organizations face in their everyday
lives. For example, remote healthcare monitoring systems will help
alleviate the severe shortage of healthcare personnel in an ageing
society; intelligent transportation systems will help reduce traffic
congestion and inevitably ills caused by it such as air-pollution; smart
distribution systems from utility grids to supply chains will improve
the quality and reduce the cost of their respective goods and services;
tagged objects can be recycled more efficiently by being retrieved from
bulk waste disposal, and so on. These applications would dramatically
change the way our societies function and thus have a big impact on many
aspects of people’s life in the years to come. IoT is not a mere
extension of today’s Internet or an internet of Internet systems. It
represents intelligent end-to-end systems that enable smart solutions
and as such it covers a diverse range of technologies, including
sensing, communications, networking, computing, information processing,
and intelligent control technologies. To make IoT a reality, significant
research needs to be conducted within and across these technological
aspects of IoT. This has recently motivated a voluminous amount of
research activities in the hot field and this Feature Topic Issue
intends to capture and expose it to the IEEE ComMag readership.
Scope of the issue
This feature topic issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the
state-of-the-art development in technology, application, and
standardization in the field of the Internet of Things, and present an
insight of future research opportunities and challenges in this field.
The feature issue will consider original survey and research articles
written in a tutorial style. Topics of interest include but are not
limited to:
* Network and system architectures of IoT
* Sensing technologies for IoT
* Short-range Communications for IoT
* Sensor networking technologies for IoT
* Access network technologies for IoT
* Information processing, management, and distribution in IoT
* RFID applications in IoT
* Smart grid applications in IoT
* Healthcare applications in IoT
* Environmental monitoring applications in IoT
* Intelligent transportation applications in IoT
* Public safety in IoT
* Security and privacy management for IoT
* Application systems and testbeds for IoT
* Standardization activities for IoT
Manuscript Submission
Authors should submit their manuscripts in PDF format electronically via
the Manuscript Central (http://commag-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com).
Articles should be tutorial in nature and should be written in a style
comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of the field. Authors
must follow the IEEE Communications Magazine’s guidelines for
preparation of their manuscripts. Complete guidelines for prospective
authors can be found at www.comsoc.org/pubs/commag/sub_guidelines.html.

Special Issue Description
—---------------------------
Due to the significant increase in various security threats, safety has
become a primary concern for our society. As a result, most of the
public places such as airports, train stations, banks, shopping malls,
subways and streets are nowadays equipped with state-of-the-art
multimedia surveillance systems. These systems are meant to process the
sensory data to automatically detect the suspicious or unusual behavior
of the people and alert the security personnel so that a preventive
action can be taken. Although this surveillance infrastructure has
proved to be highly useful from a security perspective; there has been
apprehension among people in regard to their privacy safeguards.
Citizens have increasingly begun to object to being watched
electronically. Hence, there is a need of preserving privacy of people
yet providing them a sense of security through effective surveillance.
Although there has been a significant progress in the field of
surveillance research, the issues related to people's privacy have often
been overlooked in the past and have only begun to attract the attention
of researchers very recently. The goal of this issue is to bring forth
the recent advancements in the privacy research for multimedia surveillance.
Original and unpublished contributions covering the following and
related issues concerned with privacy in multi-sensor multimedia
surveillance settings are solicited:
· Privacy considerations in acquisition and transmission of multimedia data
· Privacy issues in multimedia information processing: fusion,
analysis, presentation, and publication of multimedia data
· Privacy in multimedia databases: storage, access, indexing and retrieval
· Theory and models: assessment of privacy and utility, privacy leakage
and covert channels
· Ethical and legal issues of privacy
