IEEE Globecom'2010 Symposium on Communications QoS, Reliability and
Modelling, 6-10 December, 2010, Miami, Florida, USA
(http://www.comsoc.org/confs/globecom/2010/)
Scope
Communication networks are designed to provide service to their users
with acceptable quality level. For that, network traffic should be
analyzed and properly controlled so that the desired Quality of Service
requirements of applications and Services are achieved. The diversity of
applications characteristics and current network technologies demand
specific modelling and design tools. Moreover, different techniques
including analytical modelling, simulation, measurement and monitoring
are required in order to support design and dimensioning of
communication networks and services.
This symposium emphasizes the design, resource allocation, traffic
control, and performance evaluation advances required in order to
deliver the expected high quality and reliability in telecommunication
networks and services. The symposium will provide an international
technical forum for experts from industry and academia to exchange ideas
and present results of ongoing research on the challenging issues
related to the requirements, metrics, measurement, management, and
dissemination, as well as performance modelling for the emerging era of
network services.
This symposium aims at papers that describe original and unpublished
contributions addressing various aspects of performance modelling, QoS
and reliability in computer and telecommunication networks. Authors are
invited to submit original technical papers covering but not limited to
the topics of interest listed below.

------ My apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message
----------------------------------------------------------------------
------ The submission Deadline of the Special Issue of IEEE Wireless
Communications Magazine on "Internet of Things: the "Next Big Thing"
in Communications? " has been extended to MARCH 31, 2010 (firm
deadline)
------------------ LAST CALL
------------------------------------------
Call for Papers
In the last few years, a stimulating idea is fast emerging in the
wireless scenario: the pervasive presence around us of a variety of
"things" or "objects", such as devices, sensors, actuators, mobile
phones, which, through unique addressing schemes, are able to interact
with each other and cooperate with their neighboring "smart"
components to reach common goals. This novel paradigm, named "The
Internet of Things", continues on the path set by the concept of smart
environment and paves the way to the deployment of numerous
applications with a significant impact on many fields of future
every-day life. In this context, logistics, Intelligent Transportation
Systems, Business/Process management, assisted living, e-health are
only a few examples of possible application fields in which this novel
paradigm will play a leading role.
How to implement this novel paradigm and how effective its
introduction into citizens' every-day life is, still remains to be
investigated. Key objectives of any R&D activity in the field are:
efficient and effective wireless spectrum utilization, full
interoperability of "smarts" devices, their adaptation and autonomous
behavior, as well as trust, privacy, and security guarantees.
From a wireless communications and networking perspective, the
Internet of Things idea raises several challenging issues to address
and technological nodes to untie.
Which major technological innovations and developments are still
required to enable a level of "ambient intelligence", characterized by
the integration of wired and wireless "smart" components? Which
sustainable standards, technologies, global communication protocols,
and algorithms at the various layers of the system protocol stack
(from the physical to the application layer) shall be introduced with
the aim of allowing a vast amount of information to be shared amongst
things and people when wireless links and technologies are involved?
Which is the role of widely accepted wireless communications paradigms
for peer to peer communications, machine-to-machine communications,
and machine-to-network communications in a IoT perspective? Could the
use of middleware mechanisms represent a feasible and effective
solution to the problem of integrating Radio Frequency devices and
wireless sensors into a common IoT framework? Are the proposed trust,
privacy, and security models able to make people trust in these novel
technologies instead of being afraid of an external surveillance and,
more relevantly, are they still effective when involved "things"
communicate wirelessly?
An attempt to provide a partial answer to these and many other related
questions will form the main scope of the present special issue. More
specifically we are interested in the wireless communications and
networking aspects involved by the introduction of the Internet of
Things concept, and therefore solicit papers covering a variety of
topics including, but not limited to:
• Internet of Things infrastructures, communication systems, network
architectures
• Mobile Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks
• Network management, distributed processing (e.g. access,
scheduling, radio resource management, etc.), scalability, and
cooperation issues in integrated wired-wireless scenarios for the
Internet of Things
• Internet of Things enabling ubiquitous and wireless technologies
• Security and privacy management for wirelessly communicating
"things" and users
• RFID technology and RFID middleware
• Electromagnetic aspects related to the Internet of Things
• Machine-to-machine and machine-to-network communications in the
presence of wireless links
• Inter-vehicle communications and seamless connectivity
• Location and tracking through navigation sensors
• Internet of Things applications in research projects
• Standardization and regulation (e.g. spectrum allocation and radio
frequency exposure protection) issues for the Internet of Things
Submission of original contributions is solicited on the above topics
as well as others relevant to the "Internet of Things" concept.
All submissions should adhere to the style of IEEE Wireless
Communications Magazine. Guidelines for prospective authors can be
found on-line at

---call for paper---
The traditional centralized wireless and mobile networks are mainly
based on single-hop architecture and rely on fixed infrastructure such
as base stations or access points. The proliferation and deployment of
radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, Wireless
PANs, ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks with distinguishing
characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power, mobility, and
prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous access
across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous
environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon
the application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs)
available. The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on
the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but
introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The
design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop
wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks
continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack.
Therefore, it is necessary to aim at heterogeneous architectures and
services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop as
well as multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together the research community in
order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the
latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous
multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and
previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and
application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks.

Call For Submissions
A PhD Forum on Mobile Systems, Applications, and Services
June 15, 2010
San Francisco, CA USA
http://cseweb.ucsd.edu/~dlmccoy/mobisysforum10/
Co-located with ACM MobiSys 2010
-----------------------------------
Overview:
The PhD Forum provides a friendly and supportive environment for
doctoral students to present and discuss their dissertation research
both with their peers and with a panel of experienced researchers from
academia and industry. In addition to providing feedback and advice,
this forum will provide an opportunity for students to network as well
as to practice presenting their research clearly and concisely.
This forum is best suited to students who are far enough into their
PhD to have a concrete dissertation proposal outlining the key
challenges they plan to solve as well as the strategies and
methodologies that are applicable. Furthermore, participants should
not plan to finish their dissertation within 6 months of the forum, as
that would leave little time to include advice and suggestions into
their work.
Travel Grants:
MobiSys 2010 is pleased to provide travel support to selected US based
graduate students to broaden the participation in our main
conference and workshops. Travel support will provide up to $1000 per
student to help cover the cost of the student's travel, lodging,
meals, and conference registration fees. We encourage the
participation from women, underrepresented minorities, and persons
with disabilities. Preference will be given to PhD Forum participants
and presenters at the main conference but we will also seriously
consider applications from presenters of posters, demos, or papers at
other MobiSys 2010 workshops. Travel support is made possible by a
grant from the National Science Foundation.
Awards:
$500 will be awarded for the best presentation at the forum.
Format:
This year's PhD Forum will be a one-day event consisting of short
student presentations, discussion, and a roundtable discussion. Each
participant will have time allotted for a short presentation as well
as an in-depth and constructive discussion led by the panel. In order
to allow adequate time for each presentation, we will limit the number
of participants to no more than 10 presenters.
The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion, in which
panelists will have another opportunity to provide general suggestions
and advice to the entire group.
Submission:
Submissions should consist of the following
1. An extended abstract of the student's dissertation research
(up to 2 pages) including a brief discussion of motivation,
challenges, related work, and initial results. Applicants should
clearly identify their contributions to the field of mobile systems.
Also, a clear delineation of prior work and proposed work, will help
the panel provide more useful suggestions.
2. A short biographical sketch (1 page max) describing the applicants
affiliations and research activities. This should include the date
that the student expects to complete his/her dissertation.
Authors should follow the style formatting guidelines for MobiSys
papers. Submissions should be sent in PDF format to
mobisys.phdforum.2010(a)gmail.com.
If accepted, a student may be asked to provide explanations or
clarification by the camera-ready deadline.

IEEE Communications Magazine
Call for Papers
Network Testing Series
The objective of the Network Testing Series of IEEE Communications
Magazine is to provide a forum across the academia and the industry to
address the design and implementation defects unveiled by network
testing. In the industry, testing has been a mean to evaluate the design
and implementation of a system. But in the academia, a more common
practice is to evaluate a design by mathematical analysis or simulation
without actual implementations. A less common practice is to evaluate a
design by testing a partial implementation. That is, the academia
focuses more deeply on algorithmic design evaluation while the industry
has broader concerns on both algorithmic design issues and system
implementation issues. Often an optimized algorithmic component could
not guarantee the optimal operation of the whole system when other
components throttle the overall performance.
This series thus serves as a forum to bridge the gap, where the design
or implementation defects found by either community could be referred by
another community. The defects could be found in various dimensions of
testing. The type of testing could be functionality, performance,
conformance, interoperability and stability of the systems under test
(SUT) in the lab or in the field. The SUT could be black-box without
source code or binary code, grey-box with binary code or interface, or
white-box with source code. For grey-box or white-box testing, profiling
would help to identify and diagnose system bottlenecks. For black-box
testing, benchmarking devices of the same class could reflect the state
of the art. The SUT could range from link-layer systems such as
Ethernet, WLAN, WiMAX, 3G/4G cellular, and xDSL, to mid-layer switches
and routers, upper-layer systems such as VoIP, SIP signaling,
multimedia, network security, and consumer devices such as handhelds. In
summary, the Network Testing Series solicits articles falling in, but
not limited to, the following topics:
a.. Testing functionality, performance, conformance, interoperability,
and stability
b.. Testing systems and services of 10G Ethernet, Power over Ethernet,
WLAN, WiMAX, 3G/4G cellular, xDSL, switches, routers, IPv6, VoIP, SIP
signaling, storage area networks, network security, and consumer handhelds
c.. Testing various layers of network devices including black-boxes,
white-boxes, and grey-boxes
d.. Benchmarking and profiling network systems and services
e.. Network lab testing and field testing
f.. Designing network test methodologies, test tools, and test beds
g.. Evaluating false positive and negative of network security
h.. Analyzing lab-found and customer-found defects
Submission
Prospective authors are strongly encouraged to contact the Series
Editors before writing and submitting an article in order to ensure that
the article will be appropriate for the Series. The submitted articles
should not be published elsewhere or be under review for any other
conference or journal. Articles should be tutorial yet rigorous in
nature. Mathematical equations should not be used (although some simple
equations may be allowed if permission is granted by the Series Editor
and the Editor-in-Chief). Articles should not exceed 4500 words. Figures
and tables should be limited to a combined total of six. Complete
guidelines for prospective authors can be found at:

Betreff: [Tccc] CFP: LOCALGOS 2010, Papers Due March 21st
Datum: Fri, 12 Mar 2010 23:35:18 -0800
Von: Ben Zhao <ravenben(a)cs.ucsb.edu>

Following three successful events in 2007, 2008 and 2009,
the 4th International Workshop on Localized Algorithms and
Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks (LOCALGOS 2010) aims
to cover comprehensively the algorithmic issues in the hot
area of ad hoc and sensor networking.
This workshop concentrates on such network layer problems as
data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting,
multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control
(neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination,
etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or
greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring
global information. Localized algorithms are distributed
approaches where simple local node behavior achieves a
desired global objective. Localized protocols provide
scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks
with an arbitrary number of nodes. The objective of the
workshop is to present state of the art research results on
various aspects of localized algorithms and protocols in
this rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks.
