Special Issue on
Qos and Service Provisioning for Integrated Wireless Networks
Guest Editors: Dr. I. Anagnostopoulos, Assist. Prof I. Tinnirello, Prof.
C. Douligeris
Scope
In recent years, the increased demand for all types of wireless
services, as well as the increasing number of users in the wireless
networks have led to the development of different wireless technologies,
such as 3G networks, WLAN, WiMAX etc, with different advantages and
disadvantages in terms of coverage, bandwidth, QoS, cost and mobility.
Wireless users can only benefit from the integration of these
heterogeneous technologies. More specifically, the integration of
wireless networks offers a wide variety of services and gives the user
the possibility to roam from the one network by only using a single
terminal. The vision of “anytime, anywhere” communications is too close
to become a reality, bringing benefits to both end users and service
providers. However, besides of the benefits, the integration of the
wireless and mobile networks imposes also great challenges as well.
The goal of this special issue is to publish original research and
review articles which should be comprehensive to all readers, regardless
of their speciality. This special issue will be focused on issues
concerning service and pricing models in integrated wireless networks.
In particular we are interested in tutorial, survey and original
research articles on, but not limited to the following topics:
• Innovative Interworking architectures and scenarios in Integrated
Wireless Networks
• QoS and Service Provisioning
• Business Modeling Tools
• Unified accounting, billing and standards
• Pricing models for Integrated Wireless Networks
• TCP/IP services over Integrated Wireless Networks
• Cost Estimation Mechanisms in Integrated Wireless Networks
• Applications, Services and Service Convergence
• Business and QoS SLA Parameters in Integrated Wireless Networks
• Personalized and User-Oriented Services
• Pricing and Subscription Database Techniques
• Pricing Differentiated Services
Manuscript Submission
Authors should prepare and submit manuscripts according to the Guide for
Authors as published in the Journal website at
http://ees.elsevier.com/pmc/. Manuscripts must not have been previously
published or currently under consideration for publication elsewhere.
If a similar version of the paper has been published in a conference,
the submitted version should contain significant additions/enhancements
(with at least 33% new material). Authors are requested to submit their
published conference articles and a summary document explaining the
enhancements made in the journal version.
To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for inclusion
into the special issue, it is important that authors select “QoS for
Integrated Wireless Networks” when they reach the “Article Type” step in
the submission process.

HINDAWI AHCI CfP: Special Issue on Subliminal Communication in HCI
by ISWC Publicitychair 09 Mar '10
by ISWC Publicitychair 09 Mar '10
09 Mar '10
HINDAWI ADVANCES IN HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION (AHCI) JOURNAL
SPECIAL ISSUE ON SUBLIMINAL COMMUNICATION
IN HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION
*** CALL FOR PAPERS ***
Human- and computer-based interactions are ubiquitous in our
everyday lives - everything from our mobiles, iPods, to a
variety of computer systems creates serious cognitive demands
when switching from one to the next. When used simultaneously,
extra cognitive demands are placed on us and the likelihood of
success is dependent upon our ability to apportion attention
to multiple tasks simultaneously. To alleviate the cognitive
load associated with interacting with varied computing-based
devices, common UIs and modes of operation should be
implemented, significantly reducing the amount of information
we must store and recall. In addition, subtle cues could be
emitted from the device to assist us during our interactions,
prompting us toward the appropriate action required to
effectively complete a task. These cues could be delivered in
a variety of (communication channels), for instance, visual or
auditory cues could be provided according to the specific
nature of the current activity.
In order to implement these features, UIs must be provided
with the means to detect the nature of the current interaction
set, rovide the subliminal cues across appropriate channels,
and evaluate their success. This approach would benefit from
a significant collaborative effort from a range of
disciplines: engineering, neuroscience, computer science,
psychophysiology, and related fields. The result of this
approach provides exciting challenges which will significantly
impact society at large, making significant contributions
toward a more natural, convenient, and even relaxing future
human-computer interface.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Compatibility of subliminal information transmission with
other demands and conditions in the field of HCI
- Limits of reproducibility
- Influence in interaction with further explicit channels
- Impact of subliminally delivered information on the
cognitive load
- Subliminally delivered information and the level of
distraction
- Subliminal interfaces for the automotive domain (head-up
displays, vibro-tactile transducers embedded into the seat)
- Basic characteristics of subliminally delivered information
(reachable bandwidth, natural bounds, complexity of
information, speed of perception)
- Potential of subliminal cues to guide a person to the right
course of action or to a specific emotional state
- Hardware components, that is, interactive smart rooms, games
with dynamic UIs
- Analysis of subliminal processes, that is, implicit
interaction/cognition, subliminal messaging, unconscious
emotions
Before submission authors should carefully read over the
journal's Author Guidelines, which are located at
http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ahci/guidelines.html.
Prospective authors should submit an electronic copy of their
complete manuscript through the journal Manuscript Tracking

Subject and Purpose of the Workshop
We lately witness a tremendous development in the wireless sensor
networking (WSN), which make it possible to
monitor, unobtrusively and for long periods of time the physical
environment and to collect the relevant data. For
many applications, the sensor networks cannot operate in complete
isolation. There must be a way enabling a
monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced
by the sensor network, and even to
interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read
the sensed value instantaneously, fix some
inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By
connecting the sensor network to an existing
network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet,
mobile smart networks, and notably the
global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be
straightforward. However, many questions
need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such
interconnection become effective. Suitability of IP
standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture.
Is it more effective to use fixed gateways?
Or is it better to employ a dynamic ad hoc mode where all nodes (or
several nodes) cooperatively and alternatively
act as gateways. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks
new vulnerabilities will take place. An
intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore,
but it might remotely launch attacks.
Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered.
Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also
important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. This
workshop is a forum for researchers,
academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the
interconnection of wireless sensor networks,
and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions.
Topics
Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to the
interconnection and integration of WSN to other
networks, including but not limited to:

CALL FOR PAPERS
**Special Issue on Synchronization over Ethernet and IP
in Next-Generation Networks
Guest Editors
Stefano Bregni, Polytechnic of Milan, Italy
Ravi Subrahmanyan, National Semiconductor, USA
*
Network synchronization plays a central role in digital
telecommunications. It determines the quality of most services provided
by the network operator. Traditionally, synchronization has been
distributed across telecommunications networks using the TDM links for
which the networks were designed (i.e. E1 and DS1 circuits).
Several fixed and mobile Operators are migrating to a next-generation
network (NGN) with IP packet-switched network infrastructure. Ethernet
transport is becoming increasingly commonplace. This trend is driven by
prospected lower operative costs and by the convergence between fixed
and mobile services. However, migrating trunk lines to IP transport
poses significant technical challenges, especially for circuit emulation
and synchronization of network elements.
The evolution of communications networks towards packet-switching has
increased interest in the distribution of synchronization using packet
methods. This has a twofold impact:
1) synchronization distribution over packet networks using packet-based
methods has become a focus of activity in the standards bodies (ITU-T
G.8261/2/3 and IEEE 1588);
2) the traditional model, in which synchronization distribution is
engineered carefully for optimal performance, may give way to scenarios
in which there is a greater expectation of ad-hoc synchronization
quality achieved without as much need for provisioning as has
traditionally been the case similar to Ethernet plug and play.
The latter point widens the scope of interest in synchronization beyond
specialists to the wider audience of telecommunications engineers. A
striking example is the distribution of synchronization to
next-generation wireless base-stations, which are connected to the core
network only via packet-switched networks, but still require highly
accurate synchronization to meet service quality expectations.
*Scope of contributions *
The scope of the issue includes, but is not limited to the following
topics of interest:
- key emerging standards in the area of synchronization over packet
networks;
- timing scenarios in various network applications;
- tutorial papers describing packet network characteristics which
impact synchronization transport;
- implementation challenges in achieving high-quality synchronization
using the new technologies;
- carrier and vendor experience in deployment;
- measurement techniques for characterizing and qualifying
packet-based synchronization.
*
**Submission Guidelines*
Articles should be tutorial in nature, with the intended audience being
all members of the communications technology communities. They should be
written in a style comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of
the article. Mathematical equations should not be used (in justified
cases up to three simple equations are allowed). Articles should not
exceed 4500 words. Figures and tables should be limited to a combined
total of six. The number of references is recommended to not exceed 10
(maximum 15). Complete guidelines for preparation of the manuscript are
posted at http://www.comsoc.org/livepubs/ci1/info/sub_guidelines.html.
Please send a PDF (preferred) or MS-WORD formatted paper via Manuscript
Central ( http://commag-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com). Register or log in,

The 2nd ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Planet-scale Measurement (HotPlanet)
co-located with ACM MobiSys '10, San Francisco, CA, USA
June 15, 2010
http://www.hotplanetconf.net/10/
Important dates:
Paper registration deadline: March 14, 2010
Submission deadline: March 21, 2010
Authors notification: April 18, 2010
Camera ready: May 7, 2010
Workshop date: June 15, 2010
It is well-known that successfully researching, designing and building
new mobile, ad hoc, mesh and opportunistic networking systems and
algorithms requires access to large-scale data on human mobility,
encounter, and social network patterns. Unfortunately, the wireless and
mobile research communities lack such data, with typical human contact
traces consisting of less than 100 nodes. We believe that large-scale
datasets are important, not only in communication network design, but
also for fundamental study in other academic disciplines, e.g.,
epidemiology, urban planning, and social science. Complex networks
research has flourished since 1989 when the first large Internet (and
later WWW) datasets became available. To achieve similar improvements in
mobile networking and related fields, large-scale, and ideally
planet-scale, datasets must be collected and made available.
Following a successful introductory event at ACM MobiSys 2009, this
year's workshop will challenge the community to collect large-scale
human mobility traces. Our aim is to highlight the issues in collecting
data on a planet-wide scale, so that the community can help develop
mechanisms to collect, share and analyse such data.
Topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to:
- Motivating applications for large-scale human mobility data
collection, especially from other disciplines, e.g., epidemiology, sociology
- Methods for collecting large-scale human mobility datasets
- New analyses and applications of large-scale human mobility datasets,
e.g., human dynamics characterisation and modelling
- Planet-scale data collection infrastructures
- Testbed federation for planet-scale data collection
- Incentive models for encouraging users and businesses to collect and
contribute data on a planet-wide scale
- Enabling security, privacy and anonymity for large-scale data collection
- Regulatory, legal and ethical issues in planet-wide data collection
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
All submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on their
originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of
expression. Accepted papers will be published by ACM and placed in the
ACM Digital Library. Submissions must be in English, no longer than 6
pages and in PDF format, and use the ACM
templates<http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates>.
All fonts must be embedded within the PDF and be Type 1 (scalable).
In order to allow papers to appear in the ACM Digital Library, authors
of accepted papers will be asked to submit, together with their
camera-ready, an ACM proceedings copyright transfer
form<http://www.acm.org/publications/copyright_form>. Failure to send
the camera-ready and copyright transfer on time will prevent the
publication of the paper and its inclusion in the ACM Digital Library.
Papers should be submitted through EDAS at<http://edas.info/N8637>.
Further details are on the workshop website
