Subject and Purpose of the Workshop
We lately witness a tremendous development in the wireless sensor
networking (WSN), which make it possible to
monitor, unobtrusively and for long periods of time the physical
environment and to collect the relevant data. For
many applications, the sensor networks cannot operate in complete
isolation. There must be a way enabling a
monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced
by the sensor network, and even to
interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read
the sensed value instantaneously, fix some
inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By
connecting the sensor network to an existing
network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet,
mobile smart networks, and notably the
global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be
straightforward. However, many questions
need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such
interconnection become effective. Suitability of IP
standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture.
Is it more effective to use fixed gateways?
Or is it better to employ a dynamic ad hoc mode where all nodes (or
several nodes) cooperatively and alternatively
act as gateways. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks
new vulnerabilities will take place. An
intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore,
but it might remotely launch attacks.

International Workshop on Advances in Positioning and Location-Enabled
Communications (APLEC 2010)
http://www.kn-s.dlr.de/aplec2010/index.htm
<http://www.kn-s.dlr.de/aplec2010/index.htm>
co-located at PIMRC 2010 in Istanbul, Turkey.
Tentative timeline and to do's:
* Deadline for Paper Submission: April 16, 2010
* Submit through http://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=8875
* Good luck:)
* Paper Acceptance Notification: May 17, 2010
* Camera-Ready Paper: June 18, 2010
Background:
The ability to locate and seamlessly track assets in indoor/dense urban
environments without access to GPS is a complex and challenging task
mainly due to the harsh multipath environment and the high probability
of non-line of sight (NLOS). The value of accurate range/position
information is the key requirement for many emerging applications in the
public safety, commercial, and residential domains, such as locating
firefighters or objects and instruments in warehouses and hospitals. As
a result, of interest to the workshop will be NLOS identification and
mitigation algorithms that show great promise in identifying troublesome
channel conditions that can be mitigated or even eliminated to improve
location accuracy. In addition, propagation measurement campaigns and
modelling studies as well as testbeds are fundamental to the problem and
will be highly valuable to the research community. While extracting
accurate location information is fundamental to the design of
positioning systems, cooperative and cognitive positioning algorithms
exploiting short range communication links can enhance robustness.
Geo-location information can also serve as complementary data to
estimate and predict critical parameters for improving wireless
communication networks. In cognitive radio networks, geo-location and
context-aware algorithms can support sensing methods to overcome e.g.
the hidden node problem. Machine learning techniques take advantage of
heterogeneous networks to track mobile nodes using cooperative or
non-cooperative sensor networks using the geo-location information.
The goal of the workshop is to solicit the development of new
positioning algorithms based both on (indoor) wireless communications
and (outdoor) satellite navigation systems as well as new position-aware
procedures to enhance the efficiency of communication networks.
By bringing together academic and industrial efforts in geo-location
research and location-enabled wireless communications, the workshop
highlights the latest developments in:
* NLOS identification & mitigation ranging/positioning algorithms;
* Field tests of location systems and propagation and modeling
studies for indoor ranging (TOA/RSS/AOA);
* PHY/MAC algorithms/procedures for communication and positioning
needs;
* Positioning algorithms combined with short range ad-hoc
communications;
* Signal processing techniques for (seamless) indoor/outdoor
localization;
* Cooperative, cognitive, and machine learning techniques in
heterogeneous wireless communication and sensor networks;
* Hybrid positioning using both wireless communications and
satellite navigation systems;
* Active and passive localization/communication systems for RFID
applications.

Quality of Experience for Multimedia Content Sharing
at EuroITV2010 (www.euroitv2010.org)
Tampere, Finland. 9th June 2010
* Important Dates:
- 22nd March 2010: Workshop paper submission
- 5th April 2010: Notification of acceptance
- 22nd April 2010: Camera-ready submission
- 9th June 2010: QoEMCS Workshop at EuroITV 2010
Workshop web site: http://dcti.iscte.pt/events/qoemcs/
====================================================
In recent years, it has been realized that the success of multimedia
services or applications not only depends on Quality of Service (QoS)
parameters but also relies on the analysis of the entire user experience
(UX). The relevance of this paradigm ranges from IPTV or video-on-demand
systems for distributing and sharing professional TV to user-generated
content over the web. To obtain a pleasurable user experience far more
aspects than QoS have to be taken into account. Major challenges in this
context include the identification of relevant UX factors and the
quantification of their influence on Quality of Experience (QoE). In
particular, context awareness and assessment of users? expectations play
an essential role. This is further justified by the emergence of new
multimedia enhancement techniques, notably 3DTV and Free Viewpoint.
Future Internet architectures under current research are also promising on
the possibility to accommodate protocols and policies that take QoE issues
into consideration. Consequently, acquired knowledge on the context and on
identified parameters affecting users? experience could be used to improve
media delivery.
* Workshop objectives
The objective of this workshop consists in collecting and developing
knowledge on the following three main topics defining the session structure
of the workshop:
- Context awareness for multimedia applications (video on demand on the web,
content sharing, user-generated & professional content, IPTV, social
aspects, sensors, energy efficiency)
- Content and context aware quality measurements (user-generated &
professional content, live & on demand)
- Content and context aware interplay between media service/applications and
network strategies. Namely, QoE support in the future internet
architectures.
* Research topics
The central research question consists in determining key elements
(including content and context information) for QoE assessment and
evaluation of web.sharing.tv.content and to use this information to shape
the future internet.
- Context awareness
- QoE for content sharing over the web and for IPTV
- Subj./Obj. quality evaluation in the context of use, context-aware
solutions
(situation specificity, interactivity, user-generated & professional
content)
- Media Transmission over the Future Internet
- 3D Multimedia and Free ViewPoint
- Interactive multimedia QoE support
* Submission
Workshop papers should not exceed a maximum length of max. 3 pages and
follow the ACM Style Guidelines
(http://webhotel2.tut.fi/emmi/euroitv2010/node/37).

------ The submission Deadline of the Special Issue of IEEE Wireless
Communications Magazine on "Internet of Things: the "Next Big Thing"
in Communications? " has been extended to MARCH 31, 2010 (firm
deadline)
------------------ LAST CALL
------------------------------------------
Call for Papers
In the last few years, a stimulating idea is fast emerging in the
wireless scenario: the pervasive presence around us of a variety of
"things" or "objects", such as devices, sensors, actuators, mobile
phones, which, through unique addressing schemes, are able to interact
with each other and cooperate with their neighboring "smart"
components to reach common goals. This novel paradigm, named "The
Internet of Things", continues on the path set by the concept of smart
environment and paves the way to the deployment of numerous
applications with a significant impact on many fields of future
every-day life. In this context, logistics, Intelligent Transportation
Systems, Business/Process management, assisted living, e-health are
only a few examples of possible application fields in which this novel
paradigm will play a leading role.
How to implement this novel paradigm and how effective its
introduction into citizens' every-day life is, still remains to be
investigated. Key objectives of any R&D activity in the field are:
efficient and effective wireless spectrum utilization, full
interoperability of "smarts" devices, their adaptation and autonomous
behavior, as well as trust, privacy, and security guarantees.
From a wireless communications and networking perspective, the
Internet of Things idea raises several challenging issues to address
and technological nodes to untie.
Which major technological innovations and developments are still
required to enable a level of "ambient intelligence", characterized by
the integration of wired and wireless "smart" components? Which
sustainable standards, technologies, global communication protocols,
and algorithms at the various layers of the system protocol stack
(from the physical to the application layer) shall be introduced with
the aim of allowing a vast amount of information to be shared amongst
things and people when wireless links and technologies are involved?
Which is the role of widely accepted wireless communications paradigms
for peer to peer communications, machine-to-machine communications,
and machine-to-network communications in a IoT perspective? Could the
use of middleware mechanisms represent a feasible and effective
solution to the problem of integrating Radio Frequency devices and
wireless sensors into a common IoT framework? Are the proposed trust,
privacy, and security models able to make people trust in these novel
technologies instead of being afraid of an external surveillance and,
more relevantly, are they still effective when involved "things"
communicate wirelessly?
An attempt to provide a partial answer to these and many other related
questions will form the main scope of the present special issue. More
specifically we are interested in the wireless communications and
networking aspects involved by the introduction of the Internet of
Things concept, and therefore solicit papers covering a variety of
topics including, but not limited to:
Internet of Things infrastructures, communication systems, network
architectures
Mobile Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks
Network management, distributed processing (e.g. access,
scheduling, radio resource management, etc.), scalability, and
cooperation issues in integrated wired-wireless scenarios for the
Internet of Things
Internet of Things enabling ubiquitous and wireless technologies
Security and privacy management for wirelessly communicating
"things" and users
RFID technology and RFID middleware
Electromagnetic aspects related to the Internet of Things
Machine-to-machine and machine-to-network communications in the
presence of wireless links
Inter-vehicle communications and seamless connectivity
Location and tracking through navigation sensors
Internet of Things applications in research projects
Standardization and regulation (e.g. spectrum allocation and radio
frequency exposure protection) issues for the Internet of Things
Submission of original contributions is solicited on the above topics
as well as others relevant to the "Internet of Things" concept.
All submissions should adhere to the style of IEEE Wireless
Communications Magazine. Guidelines for prospective authors can be
found on-line at
