Call for Papers 22nd International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems ARCS 2009 - System Architecture and Energy Awareness - held from March, 10th to March 13th in Delft, The Netherlands Submission deadline October 10th The ARCS series of conferences has over 30 years of tradition reporting top notch results in computer architecture and operating systems research. This year's focus is energy awareness viewed from two different ways Firstly, this deals with the improvement of computer systems to be as energy efficient as possible (particularly for specific applications). One can think of heterogeneous multi-core architectures or reconfigurable architectures for this purpose. Secondly, this addresses the usage of computer systems to reduce the energy consumption of other systems, which might lead to problems of communication and cooperation. Both aspects are relevant for the conference. Like the previous conferences in this series, it continues to be an important forum for computer architecture research. In 2009 ARCS will be hosted by the Delft University of Technology, which has one of the leading information technology schools in Europe. The proceedings of ARCS 2009 will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes on Computer Science (LNCS) series (pending). After the conference, authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version of their contribution for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Systems Architecture. Also, a best paper and best presentation award will be presented at the conference. Paper submission ================ Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers on one of the following topics: - Energy-awareness, green computing. - Computer architecture topics such as multi-cores, memory systems, and parallel computing. - Adaptive system architectures such as reconfigurable systems in hardware and software. - Operating Systems including but not limited to scheduling, memory management, power management, and RTOS. - System aspects of ubiquitous and pervasive computing such as sensor nodes, novel input/output devices, novel computing platforms, architecture modeling, and middleware. - Organic and Autonomic Computing including both theoretical and practical results on self-organization, self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing, and self-protection techniques. - Embedded systems including but not limited to architecture, communication, design methodologies, and applications. - Network Centric and Grid Computing issues with a focus on middleware. Based on these recent developments, it is clear that there are many other potentially useful tools and techniques developed in different scientific fields that the networking community is not aware of. With this Special Issue of Computer Networks, we aim to bring to the attention of researchers and practitioners novel interdisciplinary tools that can be successfully applied to the analysis and design of computer and communication networks. We solicit papers that innovatively use tools from other scientific disciplines in the service of understanding, analyzing, and optimizing computer and communication networks. A limited number of invited survey papers, presenting relevant tools and techniques from other disciplines, will also be considered for publication. We are particularly interested in paradigms that build on results and techniques developed in the context of: * Biology * Physics * Road traffic engineering * Utility Network Engineering * Economics and Social Systems The list is not restrictive - authors are encouraged to contact the editors before submitting a paper to determine whether the proposed submission is within the scope of the Special Issue. Moreover, today's wireless networks are characterized by fixed spectrum assignment policies, which often lead to wasting large spectrum portions due to sporadic utilization of the licensed users (according to FCC, only 15% to 85% of the licensed spectrum is utilized on the average). This situation has motivated and pushed forward the development of novel low-power wireless Cognitive Radio transceivers with the capability of changing their transmitter parameters (operating spectrum, modulation, transmission power and communication technology) based on interaction with the surrounding environment. Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) based on nodes equipped with cognitive transceivers have consequently emerged as viable architectural solutions to solve current wireless network problems resulting from the limited available spectrum and the inefficiency in the spectrum usage by exploiting the existing wireless spectrum opportunistically. Scope and Contributions This special issue aims to consolidate and disseminate the latest developments and advances in the emerging area of Multi-hop CRNs, which is defined as a collection of cognitive transceiver-equipped nodes forming a multi-hop communication network. The main focus of this special issue is on networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs where the information needs to be relayed over multiple wireless links. The operation of Multi-hop CRNs is not limited to the discovery and allocation of wireless resources while avoiding service disruption for primary users. Additional tasks must be accomplished to sustain end-to-end communication, including identification of sets of relay nodes, ensuring that required bandwidth is available over all necessary links, and regulating resource sharing among all flows in the network. Most importantly, these goals must be achieved while coping with negative effects of frequent link outages due to primary user access. Preferably, the multi-hop CRN must also ensure that flow requirements, such as bandwidth, delay, and jitter bounds, are met. This special issue provides opportunities for the research community, the standardization bodies, and the industry to showcase the-state-of-the-art of the research on networking aspects of Multi-hop CRNs, implementation studies, and feasibility analyses. Moreover, since the success of CRN also depends on spectrum regulatory aspect, we also solicit critical contributions addressing the Multi-hop CRM architecture as it relates to spectrum competition under regulated, partially regulated or unregulated competitive environments. While the nature of the multi-hop CRNs necessitates high levels of interaction and dependency between the physical layer and protocols and solutions at MAC layer and above, the main focus of this special issue is the networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs. Therefore, the design of cognitive transceivers and hardware, signal processing techniques, modulation and coding methods, physical layer channel models, as well as networking issues primarily concerning single-hop CRNs fall outside the scope of the special issue. We solicit papers written in a tutorial and survey style, accessible to the non-expert, presenting the state of the art. In addition, there is a growing interest on the local community and municipal levels to get broadband wireless access, but the number of options regarding network and service providers, as well as price and usage plans, is severely limited. However, affordable broadband for all is a key requirement to bridge the digital divide and to bring sustainable development to rural and developing regions as well as to support communities and municipalities. Today, existing technologies and plans for broadband access fail to address key challenges in terms of cost, deployment, or power consumption in order to bring broadband internet access to sparsely populated rural areas or to the masses of developing countries. While the focus of the general M4D conference is on multi-disciplinary research addressing the social, political, cultural and educational barriers to bringing ICT into developing regions, this workshop focuses on the technical and economical aspects of enabling (broadband) wireless internet access for rural and developing areas, as well as supporting communities and municipalities. The goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners and to serve as a forum for presenting and discussing state of the art research, exchanging ideas and experiences, and facilitating interaction and collaboration. Please find below the following Call for Papers (apologies for cross posting): 3rd International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare 2009 http://www.pervasivehealth.org/cfp.shtml Call for Papers Pervasive healthcare is an emerging research discipline, focusing on the development and application of pervasive and ubiquitous computing technology for healthcare and wellness. Pervasive healthcare seeks to respond to a variety of pressures on healthcare systems, including the increased incidence of life-style related and chronic diseases, emerging consumerism in healthcare, need for empowering patients and relatives for self-care and management of their health, and need to provide seamless access for health care services, independent of time and place. Pervasive healthcare may be defined from two perspectives. First, it is the development and application of pervasive computing (or ubiquitous computing, ambient intelligence) technologies for healthcare, health and wellness management. Second, it seeks to make healthcare available to anyone, anytime, and anywhere by removing locational, time and other restraints while increasing both the coverage and quality of healthcare. The Pervasive Healthcare conference aims to gather together technology experts, practitioners, industry and national authorities contributing towards the development and application of human-centered pervasive and ubiquitous computing technology for healthcare and wellness. CONTRIBUTIONS We seek novel, innovative, and exciting work in areas including but not limited to: Technology Design and evaluation of patient and ambient-related sensors Wearable and implantable sensor integration Sensor networks for pervasive healthcare Data fusion in pervasive healthcare environments Physiological models for interpreting medical sensor data Decision support algorithms for sensor analysis User Needs Usability and acceptability issues Social implications Coverage and delivery of pervasive healthcare services Diversity of patients and their specific requirements Telemedicine Applications Clinical applications, validation and evaluation studies Pervasive healthcare applications for citizen for chronic disease management & health risk management Health promotion, and disease prevention Wearable, ambient and home based health and wellness measurement and monitoring technologies Continuous vs event-driven monitoring of patients in diverse environments Feedback Management of Pervasive Healthcare Business cases and cost issues Electronic citizen-managed health records Security and privacy in pervasive healthcare Training of healthcare professional for pervasive healthcare Legal and regulatory issues in pervasive healthcare Insurance payments and cost aspects Standards and interoperability in pervasive healthcare Using mobile devices for healthcare information storage, update, and transmission TYPE OF SUBMISSIONS Pervasive Health will accept submissions in the following categories: 1 Full papers (6-8 pages submissions) - Full papers are submissions describing results and original research work not submitted or published elsewhere in one of the four main categories listed below. Full papers should properly place the work within the field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its contribution to the field. 2 Posters (3-4 pages submissions) - Authors are invited to submit work in progress whose preliminary results are already interesting to Pervasive Health audience. The poster track will give Pervasive Health attendees a way to learn about ongoing research initiatives and will provide presenters with an excellent opportunity to receive invaluable direct feedback from experts. 3 Demos (2 pages submissions) - For the first time, Pervasive Health Conference proposes a demo track that will showcase the latest developments and prototypes related to the topics of interest of the conference. The expected demo submissions should describe the demo from both, the technical side and its contribution to healthcare aspects. 4 Position Papers (2 pages submissions) - Position papers are envisioned to provide insight into the lessons learnt from current (industrial, practitioners, government, etc.) pervasive healthcare practice. The position papers track is envisioned to provide the view of practitioners to the pervasive health community in order to have a more clear understanding about the real needs of healthcare operators and in this way shorten the gap between technologists and the every-day needs of practitioners. 5 Workshops (2 pages submissions) Several workshops will be run in conjunction with the conference. The purpose of these workshops is to discuss work in progress and explore opportunities for new research related to pervasive healthcare. Proposals for workshops should be submitted directly to the workshops co-chairs.. All accepted submissions will be published in IEEE Xplore Digital Library.
