************************ 1st CALL FOR PAPERS ************************ Future-Networks 2009 International Workshop on the Network of the Future 2009 18 June 2009, Dresden, Germany In conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Communications http://www.future-network09.org Submission deadline: November 1st, 2008 ********************************************************************* Today's Internet architecture is stifling innovation, restricting it mostly to the application layer. From a number of angles it appears that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored. The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (Future-Net 09) is a platform for both clean-slate as well as evolutionary approaches for a redesign of the Internet. It will uniquely bring together approaches driven from mobile and wireless demands, network virtualization, network self-management, content and sensor networking and discuss these from both a technical as well as socio-economic perspective. Topics of Interest: We solicit contributions that report early results addressing research challenges in topics related to the network of the future. Particularly, we want to identify and address issues with a high potential for significant impacts on the way the network is functioning and being used. The workshop welcomes submissions from both researchers and practitioners but fresh ideas in the form of early results, position papers and systems papers are particularly welcome. WSNs are supposed to run long-lived applications. During operation, applications are likely to experience unpredictable environment conditions that require to dynamically change their behavior. With current reprogramming technology, such an adaptation is still an open issue, as it can be achieved either at the expense of significant energy consumption or through software complexity. The challenge is to achieve WSN systems that not only embed intelligence into environments, but also have embedded intelligence for reprogramming themselves after their deployment. The workshop aims at stimulating researchers and practitioners in embedded software, autonomic computing, ad-hoc networking and all other relevant areas to present their ideas and work in progress for advancing the technologies that enable adaptive WSN applications. The expected number of participants will be 15. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Re-programming techniques * Self-healing, self-protection, self-configuration,self-optimization * Intelligent power management and coverage * Virtual machines * Opportunistic computing * Adaptive networking protocols * Viral programming * Security * Design and deployment of adaptive applications PAPER SUBMISSION The program committee encourage original, high-quality submissions from researchers and practitioners from academia and industry. Drei Arten von Beiträgen sind möglich: - Lang-Beiträge haben einen Umfang von bis zu 12 Seiten und stellen neue Ergebnisse und gesicherte Erkenntnisse vor. - Kurzbeiträge sind bis zu 6 Seiten lang und beschreiben laufende Arbeiten und innovative Teilaspekte von Projekten. - Praxisbeiträge in Form von 1-2 seitigen erweiterten Kurzfassungen kommen aus der industriellen Praxis und präsentieren innovative Projekte, Technologien und Trends in den Themenbereichen der Tagung. The key advantages of these networks include allowing anywhere, anytime network connectivity with lack of centralized control, ownership, and regulatory influence; their ability to operate unattended in harsh environments in which contemporary human-in-the-loop monitoring schemes are risky, inefficient and sometimes infeasible; and ease of reconfiguration to fit specific application needs. However, the resource-constrained nature of the employed devices and the self-organization of the network, coupled with an often unattended deployment of a large population of nodes, pose non-conventional challenges and motivate the need for special techniques for dependable design and management of AHSNET. The last few years have witnessed a growing interest in the application of AHSNET in fields such as emergency search-and-rescue operations, decision making during combat, data acquisition operations in inhospitable terrains, dangerous battlefields, outer space, or deep oceans, among others. Such interest has fueled a wealth of research ideas that are moving rapidly into commercialization and standardization. The ICC Symposium on AHSNET opts to bring together researcher and practitioners from academia and industry and foster a forum for discussing and presenting recent research results. While a single sensor network typically provides access to information of a limited geographical area and selected types of sensor data, a GSN provides an application with uniform and transparent access to a multitude of individual sensor networks that may be geographically dispersed, aggregating and correlating different types of data as appropriate for the application. The challenges imposed by global sensor networks are relevant to many fields in computer communications and distributed systems such as sensor networks, complex event and stream processing, pervasive computing, and P2P overlays. This workshop intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working in relevant fields in order to share ideas, challenges and visions on Global Sensor Networks as well as to foster new cooperation. WORKSHOP TOPICS GSN09 is looking for contributions related but not limited to the following list of topics in the domain of Global Sensor Networks: - Sensor network protocols - Complex event processing - Distributed stream processing - P2P overlays - Middleware - Security - Query processing and optimization - Quality of service - Applications SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Papers should be submitted in PDF format via the workshop page. Contributions may present i) novel and possibly preliminary research results (full papers 12 pages, short papers 6 pages) , ii) position papers describing major challenges (6 pages), iii) new trends from the industry (2 pages). Each submission will be reviewed by three members of the program committee and are selected according to their originality, quality, and relevance to the workshop topics. Accepted papers will appear in the KIVS Workshop proceedings (publisher to be announced). For accepted papers at least one author must register with the workshop and give a presentation at the workshop. Submissions must follow the KIVS formatting guidelines and must not exceed the given page limits. Note that contributions in English as well as in German are welcome.
