WiMob08 is the fourth in a series of annual conferences: two times in Montral (QC), Canada in 2005 and 2006 and the last one in New York, USA in 2007. (Apologies if you receive multiple copies.) ========================================================================= CALL FOR PAPERS 2nd IEEE International Conference on Self-adaptive and Self-organizing Systems (SASO 2008) Venice, Italy, October 20-24, 2008 www.saso-conference.org Sponsored by IEEE Computer Society, Technical Committee on Autonomous and Autonomic System (Note: The First IEEE SASO in 2007 had an acceptance rate of 20%.) The aim of the SASO conference series is to provide a forum for laying the foundations of a new principled approach to engineering systems, networks and services based on self-adaptation and self-organization. To this end, the meeting aims to attract participants with different backgrounds, to foster cross-pollination between different research fields, and to expose and discuss innovative theories, frameworks, methodologies, tools, and applications. The complexity of current and emerging computing systems has led the software engineering, distributed systems and management communities to look for inspiration in diverse fields (e.g., complex systems, artificial intelligence, sociology, and biology) to find new ways of designing and managing networks, systems and services. In this endeavor, self- organization and self-adaptation have emerged as two promising interrelated facets of a paradigm shift. Self-adaptive systems work in a top down manner. They evaluate their own global behavior and change it when the evaluation indicates that they are not accomplishing what they were intended to do, or when better functionality or performance is possible. A challenge is often to identify how to change specific behaviors to achieve the desired improvement. Self-organizing systems work bottom up. They are composed of a large number of components that interact locally according to typically simple rules. The global behavior of the system emerges from these local interactions. Here, a challenge is often to predict and control the resulting global behavior. This year's edition is specifically focused at improving our understanding of the properties inherent to self-adaptation and self-organization, a necessary requirement for the effective engineering and building of usable self-adaptive and self-organizing systems. Contributions should present novel theoretical or experimental results, or practical approaches and experiences in building or deploying real-world systems, applications, tools, frameworks, etc. Contributions contrasting different approaches for engineering a given family of systems, or demonstrating the applicability of a certain approach for different systems are particularly encouraged. REVIEW CRITERIA Papers should present novel ideas in the topic domains listed above, clearly motivated by problems from current practice or applied research. We expect claims to be substantiated by formal analysis, experimental evaluations, comparative studies, and so on. Authors are also encouraged to submit application papers. Application papers are expected to provide an indication of the real world relevance of the problem that is solved, including a description of the deployment domain, and some form of evaluation of performance, usability, or superiority to alternative approaches. If the application is still early work in progress, then the authors are expected to provide strong arguments as to why the proposed approach will work in the chosen domain. MMNS will provide participants with a high quality and intimate setting for discussion and debate. The conference is sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 6.6 on Management of Networks and Distributed Systems, with technical co-sponsorship by the IEEE Communications Society and specifically the Technical Committee on Network Operations and Management (CNOM). SCOPE OF MMNS 2008 Since 1997, MMNS has established itself as a major conference for research and innovation in the management of multimedia technology and networked services. The scope of the conference has been expanded in recent years to include management of emerging mobile and wireless networks. The objective of the conference is to bring together researchers and scientists from academia and industry interested in state-of-the-art management of converged multimedia networks and services across heterogeneous networking infrastructures, while creating a public venue for result dissemination and intellectual collaboration. The convergence of existing and emerging technologies such as broadband, mobile, and broadcast networks is considered as a promising opportunity for existing providers to increase theirs service subscriber base so that 4G vision and beyond becomes a reality. An important research effort is undertaken by main actors to face the multidimensional, in terms of transport technology, session signalling, and QoS provisioning, heterogeneity of Next Generation Networks (NGNs). Efficient management of these services is a key ingredient in the effort to provide cost effective, innovative services, and mass market solutions that are likely to become a major source of income for different stakeholders. The need to evolve management tools, solutions, platforms and methodologies to keep pace with emerging networks is at a critical juncture with the proliferation of mobile and wireless systems, intelligent and broadband networks, triple play (data/voice/video) convergence, and the integration of embedded computing and communications. The academic and industry research communities should unify forces to address the challenges of developing and operating converged multimedia networks and services. Inevitably, integrated management is a key element in addressing this challenge. The MMNS 2008 technical program committee is soliciting research papers in the broad area of network and service management that address new models, architectures and technological designs to enable multimedia and mobility proliferation in NGNs. MMNS 2008 intends to continue the success of the outstanding agendas of the past, and will emphasize and solicit novel research in the management of converged multimedia networks and services. Similar to the Internet, these trends will revolutionize existing paradigms of communication, networking, and computing. In particular, the complexity hidden in such dynamic large-scale networks and services calls for self-management and autonomicity as a necessary condition for obtaining purposeful systems. The challenges posed by such a vision cover a wide range of disciplines and sciences, including computing, communication, distributed systems, and control systems. Further, these challenges call for a new, integrated and multidisciplinary approach to pervasive computing and communication environments, giving rise to a new converged science, able to work at the junction of systems, computing and communication sciences. The Autonomics conference provides an international forum driving the emergent science of autonomic systems, bringing together research communities in communication and computing, promoting cross-fertilization among the different disciplines involved. Scope: The primary research challenges faced are the communication, design, programming, deployment, use, and fundamental limits of autonomic, pervasive, context-aware systems running on top of dynamic, possibly large-scale, distributed systems. It has currently expanded to wireless multihop networks, which include ad hoc radio networks, sensor networks, wireless mesh networks and mobile multihop relay systems. With multihop capability, wireless communication can be combined with cooperative communications and network coding, which has attracted even more researchers to this field. In many wireless multihop networks, the merits of capacity enhancement as well as coverage exceed the delay caused by multihop relay. Still, however, there are unresolved issues that may not be necessarily technical; one question regards the real motivation of a relay node that allows packet relay for the other transmitting nodes by consuming its own energy. There is also a security issue in multihop communications, in the sense that one's own data transmission is received by someone else in close proximity. On the other hand, in the networked robotics area, researchers try to realize group behaviors found in small insects or animals, in order to control and coordinate a team of robots. Especially, real-time wireless communication can help dynamic resource management and self-organization for a team of cooperative robots. The multiple robots communicate with each other, sharing the same mission, naturally through wireless communications. In this respect, wireless communication is an excellent candidate for inter-robot information exchange. This special issue is an attempt to bridge these two dynamic areas. A WSN consists of a large number of small sensors with sensing, control, data processing, communications, and networking capabilities. WSNs are characterized of dense node deployment, unreliable sensor, frequent topology change, and severe power, computation, and memory constraints. These unique characteristics pose considerable challenges on the design of large-scale WSNs. In addition, sensor networks usually transmit data and operate in hostile unattended environments, the requirements and design of sensor networks are significantly different from other wireless networks like cellular network, ad hoc networks or mesh networks. In such scenarios, distributed algorithms without global information exchange have compelling characteristics, e.g. lower overhead and energy consumption. To achieve the full potential of limited resource, there is always trade-off problem in investigating the sensor networks performance. Such formulated problem normally needs efficient, distributed, scalable, and robust algorithms. The issues include routing, MAC, energy-efficient protocols, topology control in sensor networks. Classical approaches may be employed, e.g. dynamic programming, integer programming, game theory, and simulated annealing. However, the problems in different scenarios require different analytical model as well as algorithms to achieve optimal performance. This special issue aims to foster the research with any new idea, approach, theory, and technique to resolve the issues in sensor networks from the algorithmic and/or distributed computing perspective. Original and research articles are solicited including new technologies, theoretical studies, practical applications, and experimental prototypes.
