The potential of this technology has been acknowledged with the establishment of ambitious research programs worldwide, such as the European eSafety initiative, the US programs derived from the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative and the Japanese InternetITS and AHS programs. The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) currently covers through its areas of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive Electronics) all technical aspects needed to make wireless vehicular communications a reality. As a result, the IEEE VTS society has decided to establish a technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications, with the first issues planned to be co-located with the reputed IEEE VTC conferences. The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (WiVeC) will cover all vehicular wireless communications aspects of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) communications, including implications on transport efficiency and safety, implications on automotive electronics, liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment. After a successful first WiVeC edition in 2007 (http://www.ieeevtc.org/wivec2007/) with over 150 participants in the 2-day event, the second IEEE WiVeC symposium will be co-located with the 68th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2008 Fall conference and will take place at the Calgary Marriott Hotel in Calgary on the 21st and 22nd of September 2008. Combined registrations packages will be offered for WiVeC and VTC events. All accepted papers will be included in the VTC 2008-Fall conference proceedings and will be published on the IEEE Xplore database. A selection of the best WiVeC papers will be published in a special issue of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine http://www.ieeevtm.org Authors are encouraged to submit full papers (a maximum of five pages) through the conference web site. Topics of interest ------------------ The WiVec Symposium seeks original papers - not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal - in the area of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), and vehicle-to-person (V2P) wireless communications. Regular Paper Submissions ------------------------- Authors are encouraged to submit full length papers (maximum 5 pages) following the submission guidelines provided at http://www.ieeevtc.org/wivec2008/ Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings published by the IEEE and will be included in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Poster and demo sessions will be co-located to ensure maximum visibility and a close interaction between presenters and participants. Demo proposals covering innovative technologies, platforms, analysis tools and applications related to wireless vehicular communications are encouraged. Submissions describing both mature or innovative systems and prototypes developed for commercial use or for research purposes, from industries or universities, are encouraged. The submitted demo proposal should include in a maximum of 2 A4 pages following the WiVeC paper format: 1. Title, authors and contact information. 2. Technical content to be demonstrated. 3. An overview of the demonstration set-up (the inclusion of photographs of the demonstrator are encouraged) and the results that will be shown to attendees. 4. Any URLs that link to screen-shots, live demos, or related information The authors should also email the Demo Chair with information on the equipment or facilities required for the system demonstration (e.g., power supplies, Internet connections, table dimensions, etc). Demonstrations could be supported by a poster describing the general set-up of the demonstration, its background and technical content to be demonstrated. Demo participants interested to use a poster should also inform the demos chair. Demonstrations will be selected based on their novelty, technical quality, and attractiveness of the demonstrated system. Accepted demonstrations will be included in IEEE Xplore and the Conference CDROM. Please note that for every accepted demonstration, it is required that at least one person registers for the conference and presents the demo. However, no additional paper charge is needed for authors that are already presenting a regular paper in IEEE WiVeC'08. Manuscript Submission Deadline: August 1, 2008 CALL FOR PAPERS-IEEE Network Magazine Special Issue on: Protocols and Algorithms for Future Cross--Layer and Hybrid Optical Networks Background Recent technological advances and breakthroughs in optical devices, communication sub-systems, and network architectures have led to a profound transformation in all aspects of optical network communications. The potential for highly-scalable "on-demand" service provisioning over multilayer network infrastructures provide an opportunity for service providers to reduce OPEX/CAPEX, and increase ROI. These efforts have special significance in light of the "post-bubble" dynamics of the optical networking market. One approach has been that in order to provision high-bandwidth pipes, multiple (and independent) control protocols are used to deal with the multiple layers where control can be exercised. However, it is recognized that a more integrated approach, capable of operating in multi-domain environments as well, is needed, and hence, it is becoming increasingly important for service providers to evaluate cross-layer/cross-domain design techniques to introduce new services at lower cost and higher quality. On one hand, relying on optical transparency at the physical layer had been demonstrated to allow for dynamic and flexible optical layer with the possibility to add "intelligence". On the other hand, transparency reduces the ability of a client layer to interact with the physical layer, thus leading to limitations on network design, planning, control and management, in contexts where the assumed transparency no longer holds, e.g. IP over DWDM environments. For example, the need to account for the Physical Layer Impairment (PLI) constraints the kinds of paths that can be constructed for routing. Several cross-layer/cross-domain design approaches are emerging to solve the problems in this area, and have attracted much research interest worldwide. These solutions include PLI-aware optimization in: Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA), network design, failure recovery, optical sub-system placement, morphology of Service Level Agreements (SLAs), protocols for control plane, and dynamic provisioning techniques. Various proposed techniques rely on interactions between the networking layer and the physical layer, but a broader set of cross-layer techniques is envisioned, extending possibly beyond physical and network layers. For example, multi-layer approaches can exploit the different traffic granularities and the corresponding technologies involved to control granularity, e.g., traffic grooming, hybrid O&E switching etc. It is important to examine the interfaces between different wavelength and session granularity layers that might be used, for example, is it more meaningful for a wavelength layer and a waveband layer to interoperate in a peer-to-peer arrangement or in a client-server arrangement? In order to provision services in X (where X can be IP/GMPLS/SONET/Ethernet, etc.) over WDM (or for SONET over Ethernet architectures) it is essential to understand the interaction across various layers and to develop efficient cross-layer mechanisms in the form of algorithms and protocols that can ultimately help reduce CAPEX/OPEX, while being able to route and schedule lightpaths, to provide multi-layer resilience, etc. Furthermore, several vendors/operators are exploring possibility of developing/deploying networks along cross-domain principles, as means of integrating hybrids of wireless and optical networks to support cost-effective broadband access. Scope of Contributions The special issue will cover recent developments and solutions proposed in the area of cross-layer/cross-domain design of optical networks. The main focus here is on network and higher layer issues and not on modeling the physical layer characteristics or impairments. Specifically, within the context of cross-layer/cross-domain design for optical networks, we solicit tutorial articles, and articles with tutorial content but also presenting original research, as well as experimental results focusing on the following topics: * PLI-aware network design and RWA. * Modeling of optimization of optical sub-systems placement (e.g., amplifiers, regenerators, etc.). * PLI-aware wavelength monitoring, E2E authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA). * Design and service provisioning for PLI-aware metropolitan networks. * PLI-aware control plane protocol standardization and approaches to SLA support. * Cross-layer protocol design for multi-layer (X over WDM, Ethernet over SONET, Optical Ethernet) networks. * Multi-layer fault-localization protocols and failure recovery algorithms. * Inter-layer traffic engineering, QoS support and call/session admission procedures. * Data plane and control plane issues in cross-domain hybrid (wireless/optical) networks. * Experiences from cross-layer/cross-domain optical network test-beds and field trials. They are often of large volumes and are compressed in order to save the storage cost and bandwidth. Due to such requirement and property, the media protection mechanisms for images, audios or videos are significantly different from the ones for text or binary data. With the recent advances in network and multimedia technology, the applications in commercial scenario become increasing crucial. There is an increasing trend in the multimedia content distribution from the central service provider to the individuals, e.g. video-on-demand, IPTV and p2p sharing. In these applications, piracy is becoming a critical issue. Solutions are needed to protect the copyright of multimedia content. During the past decades, schemes have been reported for secure multimedia communication, e.g., key management, multimedia encryption, authentication, digital watermarking, digital fingerprinting, access control and digital rights management. These techniques are able to protect multimedia content's confidentiality, integrity, ownership, traitor traceability. In addition, in different networks such as Internet, 3G wireless, DVB-H and p2p, different secure protocols and algorithms are required to provide the system security. All these topics are in active development. This special issue aims to expose the readership of SCN to the latest research results on secure multimedia communication. CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS 8th Wuerzburg Workshop on IP: Joint EuroNF, ITC, and ITG Workshop "Visions of Future Generation Networks" (EuroView2008) http://www3.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de/ITG/2008/ on July 21st and 22nd 2008 in Wuerzburg/Germany OVERVIEW The workshop's tradition and intention are to foster the communication among researchers from industry, universities, and other research institutes. To that end, keynotes by outstanding experts, invited sessions on the main topic, and technical talks about current research will be presented. In addition, room for poster presentations will be provided. The workshop is the continuation of a series of successful events previously held in Wuerzburg. It is technically and financially sponsored by the the Network of Excellence EuroNF (within the European Union Framework Programme 7), the International Teletraffic Congress (ITC), and the German Information Technology Society (ITG). The focus of this year's symposium is on "Future Internet Design and Experimental Facilities", and in particular on current efforts towards a future Internet. This comprises overviews of selected IETF working groups as well as current and future national and international collaborative projects. We would like to stimulate discussions on future Internet applications, future wireline and wireless Internet architectures, and experimental facilities. The following invited sessions are confirmed * Future Internet Activities in FP7 * The Future Wireless Internet * Future Internet Projects * 100GET: Towards 100 Gigabit Ethernet * German Activities in IETF Several international experts from Korea, Japan, and USA have acknowledged to present their visions. We seek for further technical oral and poster presentations addressing research issues for the future Internet. They should communicate identified research issues, early insights, and they should strive to foster discussions among participants. The last few years have experienced a steep growth in research on wireless networks having attractive claims. Researchers are currently envisioning different attractive properties of wireless systems such as the ability to self-organize, self-configure, self-heal, self-manage and self-maintain. Different wireless networks having the potential to offer cost-effective home and enterprise access networking solutions are being researched. Technologies such as Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, 802.20, 802.22 and software defined radio are gaining popularity. Even though these technologies hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. This Special Issue aims to publish high quality research papers relating to different emerging wireless network technologies.
