CALL FOR PAPERS
***********************************************************************
The First ACM International Workshop on Mobile Entity Localization and
Tracking in GPS-less Environments (MELT 2008)
URL: http://www.parc.com/MELT08
San Francisco, California, September 19, 2008,
co-located with ACM MobiCom08
***********************************************************************
Location-awareness is a key component for achieving context-awareness.
Recent years have witnessed an increasing trend of location-based services
and applications. In most cases, however, location information is limited
by the accessibility to GPS, which is unavailable for indoor or underground
facilities and unreliable in urban environments. Much research has been
done,
in both the sensor network community and the ubiquitous computing
community,
to provide techniques for localization and tracking in GPS-less
environments.
Novel applications based on ad-hoc localization and real-time tracking of
mobile entities are growing as a result of these technologies. It is time
to bring leaders from both the academic and industry research
communities to
discuss challenging and open problems, to evaluate pros and cons of various
approaches, to bridge the gap between theory and applications, and to
envision new research opportunities in MELT.
The workshop seeks to provide a forum for the state-of-the-art technologies
in mobile localization and tracking and novel applications of
location-based
services. The one-day workshop will have a combination of invited talks,
technical presentations and discussions.
Possible topics of interests include, but are not limited to:
Technology topics:
* Algorithms for Localization and Tracking
* Opportunistic Localization (using existing signals in the environment)
* Environment Mapping and Map Representations
* Dynamic/ad-hoc Mapping of Environments
* Cheap and Accurate Sensing for MELT (RF, Ultrasound, IR, UWB, RFID etc.)
* Collaborative Localization and Data Fusion
* Combined Camera/Sensor Localization and Tracking
* Hybrid Location-Determination (e.g., RF+vision)
* Secure and Robust Localization
Application topics:
* Search and Rescue Operations
* Asset Tracking/Yard Management
* Material/In-process flow control
* Inventory Tracking + Location
* Vehicular Tracking in Intelligent Transportation Systems
* Sports and Entertainment
* Indoor Navigators/Activity Recommenders
* Automatic/Robotic Warehouses/Factories
***********************************************************************

Submission Details
The workshop seeks papers on preliminary technique results, novel
application concepts, software and hardware research toolkits, statements
of open challenging problems, mathematical formalization and solutions.
Selected papers will be grouped, presented and discussed at the workshop.
All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should
prepare
a Portable Document Format (PDF) version of their full paper. Papers must
be no longer than 6 pages, in font size no smaller than 10 points, and must
fit properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5 W 11 inches). All paper
submission Margins must be of 1 inch on all edges (top, bottom, left,
and right) of each page. Papers must be submitted electronically through

SUBJECT AND SCOPE
-----------------
This workshop covers comprehensively the algorithmic issues in the hot area
of ad hoc and sensor networking. In particular, sensor networks are
currently recognized as one of the priority research areas and research
activities are booming recently.
This workshop concentrates on network layer problems like data communication
(routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and
topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor
elimination, etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or
greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global
information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple
local node behavior achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols
provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an
arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan.
The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research
results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area
of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Medium access control
* Analytical, mobility and validation models
* Hybrid networks and wireless Internet
* Security in ad hoc networks
* Data management, query processing, and data delivery in sensor networks
* Unicast routing, multicasting, and broadcasting
* Geocasting and anycasting
* Energy-efficient and bandwidth-efficient protocols
* Quality of service in medium access control and routing
* Topology construction and maintenance
* Neighborhood discovery and mobility management
* Localized protocols for duty-cycled sensor networks
* Auto-configuration and network formation protocols and algorithms
* Relative positioning algorithms
* Lower bounds on information exchange required for localized solutions
* Network graph properties supporting localized protocols
* Worst and average case analysis on the deviation from optimal solutions

Experimental evaluation and Characterization (WiNTECH'08)
(http://www.net.t-labs.tu-berlin.de/WiNTECH08/)
To be held in conjunction with ACM Mobicom 2008
(http://www.sigmobile.org/mobicom/2008/index.html)
September 14-19, 2008, San Francisco, CA
----------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
===============
This workshop intends to bring together researchers working in the broad
area of experimental wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a
forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of wireless
networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved
challenges in this area.
For more information on topics of interest and other details, please visit
the workshop website
http://www.net.t-labs.tu-berlin.de/WiNTECH08
WiNCOOL DEMO CONTEST
====================
This year, we are challenging the community to show us their latest,
coolest, chair-rocking and mind-blowing innovation in an operational
demonstration. Go beyond the theoretical limitations and shed off the
numerous assumptions about wireless system and present an operational
prototype that has the potential to revolutionize wireless networking.
Innovations can be at any layer, from physical to application. However, we
particularly encourage innovations that span over multiple layers. The
innovations must have wireless networking as its key topic. The demo must be
presented live, i.e. a presentation of a demo (powerpoint, video, etc) only
is not allowed. Also, we emphasize that the demo contest is not a forum to
display commercial products. The demo contest will be judged by a panel from
industry and academia based on their technical merit and relevance to the
workshop. The winners will take home cash prices (details to follow) and
bragging rights to award-winning research demonstrators. The extended
abstract of the accepted demonstrations will be published in the workshop
proceedings and will be available at the ACM digital library.
CALL FOR POSTERS
================
WiNTECH 2008 is seeking proposals for posters describing novel work in
wireless network testbeds, measurements and characterizations. The areas of
interest are the same as those listed in the technical call for papers. The
posters may describe work in progress and offers an excellent opportunity
for feedback and discussions on early research. All submissions will be
reviewed by the technical program committee and will be judged by their
technical merit and relevance to workshop. The extended abstract of the
accepted posters will be published in the workshop proceedings and will be
available at the ACM digital library.

First International Workshop on REsource Discovery (RED)
http://bioinformatics.eas.asu.edu/RED/red2008.html
in conjunction with
10th International Conference on Information Integration and Web-based
Applications & Services
(iiWAS2008)
A resource corresponds to an information source such as a data
repository or database
management system (e.g., a query form or a textual search engine), a
link between resources
(an index or hyperlink), or a service such as an application or
tool. Resources are
characterized by core information including a name, a description
of its input and its
output (parameters or format), its address, and various additional
properties expressed as
metadata.
Resource discovery is the process of identifying and locating
existing resources that have
a particular property. Machine-based resource discovery relies on
crawling, clustering, and
classifying resources discovered on the Web automatically.
Resources are organized with
respect to metadata that characterize their content (for data
sources), their semantics (in
terms of ontological classes and relationships), their
characteristics (syntactical
properties), their performance (with metrics and benchmarks),
their quality (curation,
reliability, trust), etc. Resource discovery systems allow the
expression of queries to
identify and locate resources that implement specific tasks.
The International Workshop on Resource Discovery aims at bringing
together researchers,
developers, and practitioners to discuss research issues and
experience in developing and
deploying concepts, applications, and solutions addressing
various issues related to
resource discovery. Papers presenting either theoretical or
applicative material are
expected. Because of the dynamic research and development
effort towards supporting
resource discovery for the life sciences, we expect to receive many
contributions in the
scope of this very exciting application domain. However, we
encourage the submission of
generic solutions or the presentation of application experiences
other than related to
life sciences.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Service publication standards (UDDI, OWL-S, etc.)
- Web services
- BioMoby services
- Resource semantics
- Resource formats and metadata
- Resource metadata for efficient execution
- Data-centric Web services
- Domain ontologies for resources
- Metadata models for describing web resources
- Automatic extraction of metadata in particular with Web 2.0 tools
(wikis, blogs...)
- Models for registration of resources
- Automatic registration of resources
- Resource indexing
- Visualization of resource metadata
- Query languages for resource discovery
- user-friendly interface for resource discovery
- Resource mining, discovering services on the Web
- Mobile web services
- Service discovery protocols
- Identification protocols that can distinguish between resources and
metadata
- Interoperability-driven resource discovery
- Discovery for integration, composition, workflow, dataflow
- Metadata for resource mapping
- Dynamic service composition
- Service efficiency prediction
- QoS-based service discovery
- Resource relevance measures
- Semantics-driven resource discovery
- Discovery on the private (or invisible) web

Workshop: Software, Services und Plattformen für neue Infrastrukturen in
der Telekommunikation
http://www.ubicomp.net/sspit08/
Einreichung von Workshop-Beiträgen bis zum 28.04.2008
Motivation

Telekommunikation
* Software and Services for Operations Support Systems / Business
Support Systems (OSS/BSS)
* Management für Telekommunikationsplattformen
* Flexible und skalierbare service-orientierte Architekturen für TelCos
* Last-Mile Software Lösungen
* Erfahrungsberichte über die Migration auf eine
Service-Orientierte-Architektur in Telekommunikationssystemen

Third Workshop on Challenged Networks (CHANTS 2008)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------
co-located with Mobicom 2008, 15 September 2008, San Francisco,
CA, USA
Workshop URL: http://
wavedesk.usc.edu/chants/
Submission Instructions: See Conference Web Page
Abstract registration Deadline: 2 May 2008
Submission Deadline: 9 May 2008
Challenged networks are characterized by a heterogeneous mix of nodes
and widely varying network conditions. Nodes in today’s challenged
networks often include mobile nodes, space-based nodes, sensor/
actuator nodes and other devices. Performance of the network paths
interconnecting such nodes can be highly varying in terms of
bandwidth, latency, disruption characteristics and security
requirements. Conventional Internet access in performance-limited
environments such as developing countries can also be regarded as
challenged networks as can be ad-hoc communication between personal
devices.
The Internet protocol architecture suffers some problems when used in
a challenged network setting. For example, when disconnection and
reconnection is common or link performance is highly variable or
extreme, one or more of the traditional Internet protocols do not
work well. In this workshop following CHANTS 2007, CHANTS 2006 and
WDTN 2005, we wish to explore ongoing efforts in dealing with
physical networks that operate significantly differently from wired,
connected networks and the protocol architectures and algorithms used
to deal with such situations. Techniques for making applications
tolerant to disruptions and/or high delays are also in scope.
We are solictiting papers addressing aspects in challenged networks
including (but not limited to):
- Characterization of performance-challenged networks e.g.
measurements, modelling
- Networking systems operating over unusual/challenged networks
- Protocol design and evaluation of operations over challenged networks
- System architecture and design for challenged networks
- Applications in challenged networks
- Robust network application design and implementation techniques
- Delay tolerant and disruption tolerant networks (DTN)
- Configuration and management of challenged networks
Submissions may include presentations of specific systems or
performance measurements, as well as architectural papers addressing
new concerns. Papers that bring out problems in the existing
proposals for challenged networks or that report operational
experience will be favored. Selected papers will be forward-looking,
will describe their relationship to existing work, and will have
impact and implications for ongoing or future research. We aim to to
have a highly interactive workshop focusing on evolving this area of
network research and continuing to build its community.
Paper format and submission instructions:
Submitted papers must be no more than 8 pages long, two columns, with
no characters in smaller than 10 point fonts, and must fit properly
on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5x11 inches). Margins must be of 1 inch
on all edges (top, bottom, left, and right) of each page.

************************************************************************
Future sensor networks may have hundreds or thousands of nodes, with limited
energy supplies and communication capabilities. Thus, it is of paramount
importance for the networking algorithms and protocols to be able to scale
with a very large number of devices. The main paradigm shift to achieve
those desirable properties is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as
opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized
algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behavior
achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable
solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number
of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan.
SCOPE
-----
The main objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research
results in the area of localized algorithms and protocols for wireless
sensor networks. The workshop covers among others the following research
topics (not limited to):
- Unicast and multicast routing
- Broadcasting
- Energy-efficient and bandwidth-efficient communication
- Security in wireless sensor networks
- Data management, query processing and data delivery
- Topology construction and maintenance in wireless sensor networks
- Localized protocols for duty-cycled sensor networks
- Geocasting techniques for wireless sensor networks
- Auto-configuration and network formation protocols and algorithms
- Relative positioning algorithms
- Lower bounds on information exchange required for localized solutions
- Network graph properties supporting localized protocols
- Worst and average case analysis on the deviation from optimal solutions
