INRIA Grenoble organizes the first winter school on Hot Topics in
Distributed Computing. This winter school will take place in La Plagne,
a french ski resort, from March 9th to March 14th 2008.
The winter school on Hot Topics in Distributed Computing will give the
opportunity to researchers and PhD students to attend talks and discuss
hot topics in distributed computing, from both a theoretical and a

CALL FOR PAPERS
--- POLICY 2008 ---
2008 IEEE International Workshop on Policies
for Distributed Systems and Networks
2-4 June 2008
Palisades, NY, USA
http://www.policy-workshop.org/2008
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The policy workshop aims to bring together researchers and
practitioners working on policy-based systems across a wide range of
application areas including policy-based networking, privacy and
security management, storage area networking, and enterprise systems.
POLICY 2008 is the 9th in a series of successful workshops which
since 1999 have provided a forum for discussion and collaboration
between researchers, developers and users of policy-based systems.
This year, in addition to the latest research results from the
communities working in any area of policy-based management and
computing, we encourage contributions on policy-based techniques in
support of management and security of all types of wireless networks:
cellular, Wi-Fi, Mobile Ad Hoc, hybrids, etc.
POLICY 2008 invites unpublished novel contributions on all aspects of
policy-based management. This year, as part of the technical program
we also plan a special session devoted to the demonstrations of

Betreff: [Tccc] CFP: SPECIAL SESSION on "Bio-inspired Wireless Networks"
Datum: Thu, 13 Dec 2007 16:00:01 +0100
Von: Martin Drozda <mdrozda(a)sim.uni-hannover.de>
Organisation: Leibniz Universität Hannover
An: tccc(a)lists.cs.columbia.edu
**CALL FOR PAPERS**
SPECIAL SESSION on "Bio-inspired Wireless Networks"
Part of 2008 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of
Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS 2008)
June 16-18, 2008, Edinburgh, UK
http://atc.udg.edu/SPECTS2008/
SCOPE AND TOPICS:
With the increasing complexity of wireless networks, the task of network
management is becoming more and more difficult to handle. Wireless
networks are becoming too complex for even the most skilled system
integrators to install, configure, and maintain. Therefore it is
desirable that they would be fully autonomic -- able to manage
themselves following high level objectives defined by network
administrators. This goal implies a need for distributed computational
environments that would function with often very limited resources such
as bandwidth, energy, or processing capability of wireless devices.
Nature has demonstrated itself to be efficient in dealing with many of
these limitations, often in a more efficient way than the human-designed
counterparts. Therefore there has been significant interest in applying
ideas based on natural systems in the wireless communications domain.
This special session aims at bringing together contributions that apply
ideas inspired by natural systems to wireless networks. It will address
leading edge research ranging from theory to experimental evaluation and
tools. The topics include but are not limited to:
o Self-adaptive and self-tuning wireless networks. Autonomic networks.
o Learning algorithms inspired by neuro-physiology.
o Algorithms for securing wireless networks including approaches
based on evolution or immunity.
o Network algorithms based on genetics.
o Network epidemics.
o Bio-inspired protocols design including bio-inspired routing or
bio-inspired cognitive radio.
o Experimental case studies, test beds and tools.
IMPORTANT DATES:
Submission of papers: January 25, 2008
Notification of Acceptance: March 21, 2008
Final Camera-Ready Submission Due: April 18, 2008

[Tccc] CFP: Second International Workshop on Improved Mobile User Experience
by Petteri Nurmi 13 Dec '07
by Petteri Nurmi 13 Dec '07
13 Dec '07
Apologies for multiple postings.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
IMUx 2008 - CALL FOR PAPERS
The Second International Workshop on Improved Mobile User Experience
(IMUx 2008)
http://www.hiit.fi/events/imux2008
in conjunction with the 6th International Conference on Pervasive
Computing (Pervasive 2008), 19-22 May 2008, Sydney, Australia
http://pervasive2008.org/
Submission Deadline: 25 January 2008
------------------------------------------------------------------------
THEME
Current interfaces of mobile devices are rather limited when
adaptability, context-awareness and proactiveness are considered. For
example, they do not utilize the context of the interaction, nor the
environmental changes in the user's proximity or the capabilities of the
device itself. This context can include information about the situation
and the user preferences, longer or shorter time usage histories, etc.
To improve usability and to provide a better user experience, the
interfaces of the devices should become more intelligent and require
less intentional user inputs. In order to achieve this goal, novel
interaction methods need to be developed and combined with statistical
models of the user that capture, for example, her behavior, personal
preferences and goals. Furthermore, the developed solutions need to be
evaluated via extensive user tests to guarantee they are valuable to the
users. To improve the dialogue between the different research areas and
their practitioners, the workshop aims at bringing together researchers
from the fields of user modeling, user interaction and user experience,
with developers of mobile and ubiquitous applications. The ultimate goal
of the workshop is to provide a common forum for exchanging ideas
between these domains.
The workshop welcomes two kinds of paper submissions: research papers
and position papers. Also videos and demonstrations can be submitted.
The research papers should present original research related to one or
more of the following areas:
* user interaction in mobile environments,
* ubiquitous user modeling, and
* mobile user experience.
The position papers should address challenges in combining the
above-mentioned areas, and beyond, for an improved mobile user
experience, and propose approaches for overcoming these challenges.
We encourage authors to take a visionary view and a critical stand
towards current practices and trends.
Example topics for the research and position papers include, but are not
limited to,
* adaptive context-aware user interfaces,
* mobile computing applications with adaptation,
* considerate computing,
* context-aware information retrieval,
* embedded solutions for machine learning,
* large scale data gathering and its challenges,
* large scale user studies,
* minimal/implicit/reduced user interaction,
* mixed-initiative interaction.

WWIC 2008
6th International Conference on
Wired / Wireless Internet Communications
May 28-30, 2008
Tampere, Finland
http://wwic2008.cs.tut.fi/
------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** Extended submission deadline: January 4, 2008 ***
FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS
Next generation mobile networks will be based on Internet core networks
and wireless access networks. The need for efficient merging of the
wired and wireless infrastructure as well as the new multimedia services
and applications of next generation networks call for novel network
architectures, protocols and traffic-related mechanisms. WWIC addresses
research topics such as the design and evaluation of protocols, the
dynamics of the integration, the performance tradeoffs, the need for new
performance metrics, and cross-layer interactions.
The goal of the conference is to present high-quality results in the
field, and to provide a framework for research collaboration through
focused discussions that will designate future research efforts and
directions. In this context, the program committee will accept only a
limited number of papers that meet the criteria of originality,
presentation quality and topic relevance. WWIC is a single-track
conference which has reached, within 5 years, the highest level of
quality, which is reflected both in the level of participation as well
as the acceptance ratio and the amount and quality of submitted papers.
CONFERENCE TOPICS
The conference objectives will be pursued through highly technical
sessions organized thematically and keynote talks offered by recognized
experts. Topics of interest to WWIC 2008 include (but are not limited
