Imagine going about your day, only carrying a small mobile “companion” device. Your companion is small but the world around you is replete with a variety of displays, IO peripherals, sensors, and storage devices. As you near these resources, your companion “borrows” some of them and instantly morphs itself into a full fledged computer. All this happens without the hassles of wires, with utmost simplicity, and robust security. Beyond connectivity, your companion knows you, understands your preferences, tracks your calendar, and even learns your habits. It's capable of taking actions appropriate to your current situations, with little or no inputs from you. The device provides uses that you need and makes use of what is around to provide a higher-level of computing experience. Scope of special issue The purpose of this special issue will be to present a landscape of the state-of-the-art in research and practice of networking for composable context aware computing and connectivity. This special issue will present a collection of articles which discuss (a) high-level software, applications, and middleware that are needed to create and support composable services, (b) design of network protocols and software stacks for automatic composition, (c) the impact of context awareness to simplify network configuration, and (d) Implications for network system architecture and design. This workshop aims to bring together the technologies and researchers who share interest in the area of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks. The main purpose is to promote discussions of research and relevant activities in the design of architectures, protocols, algorithms, services, and applications for wireless networks. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. We plan to seek papers that address theoretical, experimental, and work in-progress at the all layers of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks, from application layer to the physical layer. Organic Computing (OC) additionally emphasizes natural-analogue concepts like self-organization and controlled emergence. Any autonomic or organic system must be trustworthy to avoid the risk of losing control and retain confidence that the system will not fail. Trust and/or distrust relationships in the Internet and in pervasive infrastructures are key factors to enable dynamic interaction and cooperation of various users, systems and services. Trusted/Trustworthy Computing (TC) aims at making computing and communication systems as well as services available, predictable, traceable, controllable, assessable, sustainable, dependable, persist-able, security/privacy protect-able, etc. A series of grand challenges exist to achieve practical self-manageable autonomic systems with truly trustworthy services. ATC-08 addresses the most innovative research and development in these challenging areas and includes all technical aspects related to autonomic/organic computing (AC/OC) and trusted computing (TC).
