Silverado Resort, Napa Valley, CA, USA
February 25-26, 2008
http://www.cs.umass.edu/hotmobile2008
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
HotMobile 2008, the Ninth Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and
Applications continues the series of highly selective, interactive
workshops focused on mobile applications, systems, and environments,
as well as their underlying state-of-the-art technologies. HotMobile's
small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing
new directions or controversial approaches.
We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on
applications and systems and that propose new directions of research,
advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate
controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers
containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although
papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility
are also welcome:
* Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing
* Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices
* Novel applications and environments supporting mobility
* HCI issues related to mobile computing
* Security and privacy of mobile computing
* Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility
Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they
focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system
or application.
HotMobile 2008 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be
judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and
likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop.
To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be
limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo
proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register
on a space-available basis.
Paper submissions are due on Oct 16, 2007 at 23:59:59 EST.
Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format.
Papers should be single column using 12pt font. The conference proceedings
will be published by the ACM. Preliminary proceedings will be made available
to workshop participants online ahead of the workshop. Printed proceedings
will be published and mailed to participants after the workshop.
As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not
be simultaneously under submission at another venue.
Poster and demo submissions are due on January 14th, 2008 at 23:59:59
EST. Submissions must include an extended abstract limited to one
8.5x11-inch page in 12pt font.
The important dates, as well as the organizing and
program committee members are listed below.
We look forward to seeing you at HotMobile 2008.

PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS
Workshop on MObile and DIstributed approaches in Emergency Scenarios
(MODIES)
At the 2nd International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies
for Healthcare 2008
Tampere, Finland, January 29th, 2008
http://www.pervasivehealth.org/
The field of medical emergencies is more dynamic and subject to context
variability compared to other e-health fields. The emergency management
domain is very information-intensive and mission-critical, and the
involved tasks exhibit wide heterogeneity, difficulties in communicating
and in physically reaching the place. The efficiency of the assistance
is an aspect of vital importance, so that all involved people
(healthcare workers, drivers, police, firemen, and so on) need to
communicate, coordinate and access distributed resources in a simple and
fast way. The employed resources (users and medical devices) must
dynamically organize themselves in a temporary net, where communication
links are established just in time.
Therefore, the major requirements of such support systems are dynamicity
and context-awareness, i.e. they have to easily self-configure and adapt
to the situation variability.
The above described context demands the adoption of very innovative and
powerful paradigms, much more dynamic and flexible than those usually
adopted for conventional distributed systems.
The workshop we propose will focus on mobile and distributed approaches
to face the issues of emergency scenarios, and to support involved
actors in their tasks.
This workshop solicits papers (from researchers and practitioners) that
address key issues, open problems, models, infrastructures and
innovative applications related to mobile and distributed approaches in
emergency scenarios.
TOPICS OF THE WORKSHOP include, but are not limited to:
- Mobile health care
- Emergency management
- Disaster response
- Architectures, infrastructures and middleware for distributed and
mobile health care
- Applications in emergency scenarios
- Monitoring in mobile contexts
- Distributed medical data acquisition, integration and management
- (Mobile) agents and e-health
- Context-aware approaches for distributed and mobile health care
IMPORTANT DATES:
Paper Submission Deadline: September 30th, 2007
Notification to Authors: November 2nd, 2007
Camera Ready: November 16th, 2007

Author Notification: December 22nd, 2007
Camera Ready: February 3rd, 2008
Conference Information
----------------------
The ninth Passive and Active Measurement conference will be held April
29-30th, 2008 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. This event focuses on research
and practical applications of network measurement and analysis
techniques. The conference's goal is to provide a forum for current
work in its early stages. Original papers are invited from the
research and operations communities on topics including, but not
limited to:
* Active Network Measurements
* Passive Network Measurements
* Performance Metrics
* Traffic Statistics
* Measurement Visualization
* New Measurement Approaches & Techniques
* Deployment of Measurement Infrastructure
* New Measurement Initiatives
* Applications of Network Measurements
* Network Measurements and Security
* Network Troubleshooting using Measurements
* Reproduce (or Refute) Previous Measurement Results
PAM values contributions that are broader than experimental papers.
Data and tool release are seen as first-class contributions and
preference will be given in that direction.
In particular, releasing measurement data allows for better science to
be conducted in the field of network measurement. Therefore, an award
will be given at PAM 2008 for the best paper based on a new dataset
that the authors are releasing for community use in subsequent
research. To qualify, a paper must significantly utilize a dataset
that has been collected for the work presented in the paper. Further,
the dataset must be freely available to any researcher; wireless data
sets may, for instance, be published through CRAWDAD. Novel datasets
are especially encouraged. The awarded paper will be chosen from the
set of qualifying papers accepted for the conference by a committee
made up of a subset of the program and steering committees.
Conference Web Page
-------------------
http://pam2008.cs.wpi.edu/
http://www.pamconf.org/
Submission Information
----------------------
To ensure PAM 2008 is fresh and interesting, we are soliciting papers,
submitted in the LNCS format, that do not exceed 10 pages. No
additional space will be given once a paper has been accepted.
Authors should flag papers they wish to be considered for the best
paper based on a new dataset award with a footnote on the first page
of the paper.
The proceedings of past PAM conferences were published in Springer
LNCS series, and we have a preliminary indication from Springer that
this will continue for PAM 2008 (pending the formal agreement).
Authors are, as always, asked to refrain from submitting papers
submitted to PAM to other venues during the reviewing period.

CALL FOR PAPERS
BIONETICS 2007
2nd International Conference on
Bio inspired Models of Network, Information and Computing Systems
http://www.bionetics.org/
Budapest, Hungary, December 10-12, 2007
Technically co-sponsored by IEEE COMSOC, IEEE CIS, and IEEE SMC
In co-operation with ACM SIGCAS
Jointly sponsored by CREATE-NET, ICST
*** Submission deadline (extended): August 15, 2007 ***
*****************************************************************
Technology is taking us to a world where myriads of heavily
networked devices interact with the physical world in multiple
ways, and at multiple scales, from the global Internet down to
micro and nano devices. Many of these devices are highly mobile
and autonomous, and must adapt to the surrounding environment in
a totally unsupervised way.
A fundamental research challenge is the design of robust
decentralized computing systems that are capable of operating
under changing environments and noisy input, and yet exhibit the
desired behavior and response time, under constraints such as
energy consumption, size, and processing power. These systems
should be able to adapt and learn how to react to unforeseen
scenarios as well as to display properties comparable to social entities.
The turn to nature has brought us many unforeseen great concepts.
Biological systems are able to handle many of these challenges with
an elegance and efficiency still far beyond current human artifacts.
Based on this observation, bio-inspired approaches have been proposed
in the past years as a strategy to handle the complexity of such systems.
The goal is to obtain methods on how to engineer technical systems,
which have similar high stability and efficiency often found in biological
entities.
The BIONETICS conference aims at bringing together researchers and
scientists from several disciplines in computer science and engineering
where bio-inspired methods are investigated. We are soliciting high-quality
original papers focusing on (but not limited to) the following topics:
a) Bio-inspired mathematical models, methods and tools:
- Mathematical models of biological processes
- Qualitative assessment of evolutionary algorithms
- Multiscale dynamics of emergent properties
- Artificial immune and self-healing systems
- Cellular signaling pathways
b) Bio-inspired technical systems:
- Engineering methods and tools for bio-inspired systems
- Bio-inspired service evolution and optimization
- Pandemic service deployment strategies
c) Bio-inspired information and communication systems (ICT):
- Network algorithms and protocols
- Autonomic communication systems
- Evolution of network architectures and protocols
- Adaptive and self-healing network architectures
- Self-organizing network paradigms
- In-network processing and autonomic networking
- Adaptive sensor and actor networks
- Topology control and network organization
- Localization and synchronization
- Mobility models
- Multi-agent systems and robotics
- Novel applications and services
- Self-learning defense strategies
- Adaptive and evolving protection mechanisms
- Network and information security
- Experimental studies
- Nano-scale and molecular communication
Authors are invited to submit full papers of up to 8 pages, or short papers
of up to 3 pages, in ACM conference proceedings format through COCUS
(http://cocus.create-net.it). The proceedings will be an ICST
publication and
the papers will be listed on the ACM DL and indexed by EI

Call for Papers
The First IEEE International Workshop on Opportunistic Networking (WON-08)
to be held in conjunction with The IEEE 22th International Conference
on Advanced Information Networking and Applications (AINA-08),
GinoWan, Okinawa, Japan, Mar 25-28, 2008
http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/WON08/
==================================================================
Aims and Scope
---------------
With the explosive deployment of mobile wireless devices recently,
Opportunistic Networking is becoming an increasingly popular area in
networking research, in which the assumption of having end-to-end
paths between the source and the destination is relaxed. Such networks
fall into the fields of mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) and
delay-tolerant networking (DTN).Opportunistic Networks enable user
communication in an environment where disconnection and reconnection
are common and link performance is extremely dynamic. They are very
suitable to support the situation where network infrastructure has
limited coverage and users have "islands of connectivity". By taking
advantage of device mobility, information can be stored and forwarded
over a wireless link when connection 'opportunities' arise (e.g. an
appropriate network contact is met). In this view, traditional
Internet connectivity can be considered as a special case of
connection opportunity. With numerous emerging applications,
Opportunistic Networks allow a huge number of devices to communicate
end-to-end without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure and are
very suitable to support pervasive networking scenarios.
Topics of Interest
-----------------
Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems
and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related
to Opportunistic Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out
interesting and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over
highly-polish journal-style results. Topics of interest include, but
are not limited to:
* Advanced technologies for enabling opportunistic communication
* Architectures for opportunistic networks
* Applications for opportunistic networks
* Biological and social models for opportunistic communication
* Middleware services in opportunistic networks
* Dissemination and replication techniques for opportunistic networks
* Network and resource management techniques for opportunistic networks
* Trust and cooperation in opportunistic networks
* Security issues in opportunistic networks
* Transport and reliability issues in opportunistic networks
* Routing issues in opportunistic networks
* MAC layer issues and physical layer for opportunistic networks
* Simulation and modeling of Opportunistic networks
* Tools and techniques for designing, analyzing and building
opportunistic networks
* Opportunistic networks testbeds and measurements
Submissions and Proceedings
------------------------------
Authors are invited to submit an electronic version of original,
unpublished manuscripts via ISAS website
(http://conference.iis.sinica.edu.tw/Conference-Submission).
The manuscript should be written in English and follow IEEE
two-column format with single-spaced, ten-point font in the
text. The maximum manuscript length is six (6) pages including
figures and references. All submitted papers will be refereed
by reviewers in terms of correctness, originality, technical
strength, significance and quality of presentation. The CD
proceedings will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press
and available online through IEEE Xplore.
