YouTube, for example, is reported to have about 100 million short videos streamed a day and incurs bandwidth cost on the order of a million dollars a month. Internet TV (IPTV) is a novel Internet application and represents a good opportunity of integrating video, voice, and data onto a single IP network. It has the promise to offer viewers an innovative set of choices and controls over the TV content. Several major U.S. telecommunication companies have big investments to replace the copper lines in their networks with fiber optic cables in order to provide sufficient capacity to deliver a large number of TV channels to their residential customers. Many content providers (e.g. CBS, AOL, Disney, etc) have begun to offer video streaming or download services over Internet. According to a new report published by Informa Telecoms & Media, the number of IPTV subscribers will jump tenfold by 2010. Multimedia (video, audio and data) services over WWW face many technology challenges and scalability/quality problems. In the past few years, many new technologies have been proposed (e.g. P2P, caching, QoS, multi-layer encoding, etc.) and implemented to address the challenges. Building upon our success of the IPTV workshop last year (jointly held with WWW'06), this workshop intends to bring together researchers and developers from industry and academy to discuss the technological advances and challenges in providing multimedia services over WWW. Opportunistic Networks enable users' communication in disconnected environments, in which island of connected devices appear, disappear, and reconfigure dynamically. The network is thus extremely dynamic, and is formed by the evolving contacts among mobile devices, and among connected clouds of devices. In this view, legacy-Internet connectivity is just a particular connectivity opportunity. Opportunistic Networks thus encompass the features and methods of delay or disruption tolerant networks (DTN). They are very suitable to support the pervasive networking scenario, in which a huge number of devices carried by users and embedded in the environment communicate wirelessly without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure. By enabling end-to- end communication without requiring complete paths, Opportunistic Networks are much closer to real pervasive networking scenarios, with respect to the legacy MANET paradigm. Original contributions are solicited, related to systems and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related to Opportunistic Networking. Moreover, the limitations of current network protocols and traffic engineering frameworks have proven to be a serious impediment to large-scale deployment of distributed bandwidth-intensive applications. To overcome these limitations, there is a critical need for novel "clean-state" approaches which transcend the traditional methodologies, network architectures and protocols used today . This workshop is designed to provide a unique forum to explore new frontiers in the area of ultra high-speed and high-performance networks, not constrained by the features and limitations of current networks, with a particular focus on enabling large-scale distributed e-Science applications. The objective is to facilitate discussion and exchange of ideas among members research community centered on the design, validation and deployment of ultra-high speed network architectures and protocols to support the end-to-end requirements of bandwidth-intensive applications in a transparent and optimal manner. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Innovative "clean-slate" network architectures for next generation ultra-high speed networks * Switching technologies including packet, burst and circuit switching * Ultra high-speed transport protocols * Novel approaches and strategies for highly secure ultra-high speed networks, protocols and systems * Dynamic provisioning in ultra high-speed optical networks * Control and signaling plane technologies (GMPLS, UNI, NNI, etc.) * Application optimized network middleware * Novel protocols and mechanisms for large-volume data transfers over long distances * High-speed I/O and storage systems * Remote visualizations and instrumentation design and tools * Remote computational monitoring and steering tools and mechanisms Submission Guidelines Authors are encouraged to submit a two-page abstract in PDF format. All abstract submissions should be emailed to the TPC co-chairs at nghani(a)tntech.edu and byrav(a)cse.unl.edu and will be acknowledged. Authors will be notified about the selected abstracts and requested to provide final presentation slides and extended paper versions (up to 5 pages in length). These materials will be compiled on to CD format in advance of the event and distributed to the registered attendees. Ad hoc wireless networks allow anywhere, anytime network connectivity with complete lack of control, ownership, and regulatory influence. The last few years have witnessed a wealth of research ideas on ad hoc and sensor networks that are moving rapidly into commercialization and standardization. Such networks can be randomly and rapidly deployed and reconfigured and easily tailored to specific applications including entertainment, civilian, military, etc. Moreover, an ad hoc architecture is highly robust to node failure and can provide a high-level of fault tolerance due to nodal redundancy and its distributed nature. Furthermore, energy efficiency can be achieved through multi-hop routing communication. Bandwidth reuse can also benefit from dividing the single long range hop to multiple short hops with each hop having a shorter range. Several challenges face are standing in the way to achieving ubiquitous deployment of ad hoc and sensor networks. These include variable topology, device heterogeneity, limited power supply and the lack of effective energy-efficient design, lack of QoS and application support, etc. This symposium aims at providing a forum for sharing ideas among researchers and practitioners working on state-of-the-art solutions to the challenges above. In an effort to enhance the breadth of the conference, we aim to increase the number of accepted full papers to approximately 40 for this year, which is up from 30 last year and 22 the year before. Presentations will be scheduled in a dualtrack format. The conference will institute a process for nominating and selecting awards for best paper and presentations at the conference. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by members of the program committee and by selected expert reviewers. Papers will be evaluated on the basis of originality, significance of contribution, technical correctness, overall appeal to the general UbiComp reader, and presentation. Papers submitted must not have been previously published nor currently under review for any publication with an ISBN, ISSN, or DOI number. If submitted work may appear to overlap with the authors' previous work, the authors should email the PC chairs (pcchairs(a)ubicomp2007.org) directly to explain how the new work is different. All reviewers will be instructed to keep submissions confidential, although submissions must be publishable by the cameraready deadline.
