There is a need for more realistic models of traffic, mobility, and association patterns. This can be beneficial in capacity planning, administration, and deployment of wireless infrastructures, protocol design for wireless applications and services, and their performance analysis. The Wireless Traffic Measurements and Modeling workshop is intended to serve as a forum for scientists and engineers in academia and industry to exchange and discuss their experiences and research results about all aspects of measurements and modeling of applications, usage, access, load, and mobility in wireless networks. It will also initiate discussions on how to use these models to improve the performance of wireless networks. Furthermore, it aims in enhancing and accelerating the process of sharing traces, implementations, and test suites. In this workshop, we would like to solicit short, 6-page papers that report on experiences obtained from operational wireless experiments in testbeds or the field. Along with regular presentations we plan to have invited speakers and/or panel discussions that encourage more active participation of the attendees. Multimedia data characteristics, coding standards functionalities, as well as network protocols performance and channel behavior are some of the key aspects that need to be carefully examined when proposing new solutions. Many are the applications that are going to be enabled by the new standards for mobile networking, such as packet telephony, video mail, video streaming, audio conferencing, interactive gaming, conversational navigation services, digital television, infomobility, and immersive communications in virtual environments. Some of these novel networking protocols and technologies include IEEE 802.11 (infrastructured, mesh, and sensor networks), 802.15, 802.16, UWB, DVB-H, Bluetooth, Mobile IP and its variants. Within this scope, MobiMedia is intended to provide a unique international forum for researchers working in multimedia and mobile networking fields to study new applications, solutions, and standards. Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can improve the knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient technologies and the relevant provision of advanced mobile multimedia applications. TECHNICAL PROGRAMS -------------------------------------- The technical program features two key-note speeches: from Roberto Cencioni (Head of Unit INFSO E2, EC) and Albert Gauthier (DG Information Society, EC) on the 7th Work program and the EU IST vision and from Leonardo Chiariglione on future standards on mobile multimedia. The conference will also include invited panels, to facilitate for exchanging ideas and discussion, and specific sessions and workshops on focused interest areas. Network operators offer multimedia services over mobile networks but it is still limited to particular devices on specific networks. The delivery of multimedia content to every mobile handset on every mobile network, anytime and anywhere is still a major challenge. Mobile media can be delivered via a multitude of different networks with very different characteristics like cellular networks (WCDMA, HSDPA, 3G MBMS), broadcast networks (DVB-H, DMB) or other networks standards like WLAN or Wimax. Mobile terminals like mobile phones, mobile TVs or handheld computers have different capabilities and characteristics. Consequently, seamless interworking between these terminals and networks is becoming more important in order to make uniform media delivery possible. New mobile multimedia services for large user groups like MobileTV, interactive TV, video on demand, TV chatting and multimedia telephony are arising. Each service has its own characteristics and demands for mobile media delivery. As always for mobile services spectrum efficiency is a pre-requisite for large scale deployment. Several European research projects from the FP6 program are addressing the challenges of mobile media delivery. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of mobile media delivery, projects from the mobile and wireless area like Ambient Networks, PHOENIX and DAIDALOS, from the networked audiovisual systems area like DANAE, ENTHRONE and Visnet as well as from the content technologies area like M-Pipe are dealing with mobile media delivery. Besides these projects a lot other research work about mobile media delivery is carried at academia, research institutes and industrial companies. EuMob 2006 will give researchers the opportunity to highlight their latest results on this topic. Researchers active in FP6 research projects as well as other leading international researchers will participate and share their latest findings. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to ponder. On the one hand, we see present day mobile devices capable of providing many integrated services that only yesterday required several different devices. For instance, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and the desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand, the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. We have identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize the submissions. Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, which attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop is an ideal platform to share a vision of where we are heading, interact, and strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final program would consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field.
