With various network characteristics, a number of wireless systems have
been developed over past years, targeting at different applications. While
most of these wireless technologies are deployed independently for now,
the service providers surely intend to own and operate overlaid
heterogeneous wireless systems, which integrate multiple wireless
technologies with partially overlapped coverage areas and provide
ubiquitous network service to mobile users.
Recent advances in reconfigurable computing have greatly advanced the
design of soft radios, which enable the communication with many different
radios with only a reconfiguration in software parameters. The maturation
of soft radio technology is becoming one of the most important milestones
for seamless integration of the heterogeneous wireless network. Serving as
the "glue", the soft radio technology has its niche in in two folds: (1)
the network infrastructure can be built upon soft radio, where the base
stations are tunable to different frequency bands and serve as general
access points for various mobile hosts (MHs), e.g., cellular handsets,
laptops, and PDA's (Personal Digital Assistants); and (2) the MHs may
employ soft radio, and accordingly, get access to various wireless systems
(such as wireless LAN, cellular, IEEE 802.20, and IEEE 802.16), providing
ubiquitous service for mobile users. An important design issue is to
capitalize on the recent achievement in soft radio technology for
providing improved and more efficient connectivity and service in
heterogeneous wireless networks.
With this special issue we aim at bringing together state-of-the-art
contributions in this emerging area of soft radio-enabled heterogeneous
wireless networks. We are seeking for papers reporting novel research or
commercial/industrial experiences. These papers should be original,
unpublished, and not currently under review by other conference, workshop,
or journal. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the
following:
- System optimization
- Efficient spectrum allocation and management
- Dynamic network topology discovery and optimization
- Smart handoff and inter-system signaling
- Quality of service in the heterogeneous networks
- Routing and load balancing
- Mobility management
- System modeling and performance evaluation
- Cognitive radio and testbed design

..... Ubicomp.05
..... The Seventh International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing
..... September 11-14, 2005 | Tokyo, Japan
.....
..... Paper Submission Deadline: March 7, 2005
.................................................................................
Ubicomp 2005 welcomes original, high-quality research contributions in the area
of ubiquitous, pervasive and handheld computing. This conference seeks to present
novel research results impacting the design and usage of ubiquitous computing
technology that migrates beyond the desktop. Submissions should report concrete,
transferable results that contribute to our understanding of ubiquitous computing
and help advance the state of the art. Authors are invited to submit papers within
the general scope of the conference in the following areas:
..... Devices : low power devices, novel device types
..... User Interfaces : embedded, novel
..... Systems : operating systems, middleware, distributed and database systems
..... Context : perception, fusion, use
..... Communication : ad-hoc, wireless, low power
..... Privacy, Security, Trust
Ubicomp 2005 will include a highly selective program for technical papers,
accompanied by posters, videos, demonstrations, workshops and a doctoral
colloquium.
.................................................................................
..... Paper Submission
Ubicomp 2005 is seeking papers appropriate to the interdisciplinary community
represented at the conference. Technically-oriented papers should clearly put
their work in the context of ubiquitous computing settings, and
non-technicallyoriented
papers should clearly put their work in the context of technical feasibility.
Papers will be evaluated on the basis of originality, significance of the
contribution
to the field, technical correctness and presentation. Papers will be peer-reviewed
by members of the Ubicomp 2005 program committee and by additional members of
the ubiquitous computing research community. Papers submitted must not be under
simultaneous review for any other conference, journal, workshop or other
publication.
We solicit papers up to 18 pages but explicitly welcome shorter papers. All paper
submissions will be treated as full papers, but it is important that their length
is appropriate for their content. Papers should be formatted according to the
Springer Verlag LNCS format. Accepted papers will be included in the conference
proceedings published by Springer-Verlag as Lecture Notes in Computer Science
(LNCS). Authors are required to attend the conference to present their work.
Paper submissions must be anonymized to facilitate blind review. Authors are
encouraged to take care throughout the entire document to minimize references that
may reveal the identity of the authors or their institutions. Relevant references
to an author's previous research should not be suppressed but instead referenced
in a neutral way.
All paper submissions will be handled electronically by the EDAS system. Note that
submission is a two-stage process - authors need to register their paper first
and then submit the final manuscript. Submissions must be in Adobe PDF format
and conform to the guidelines specified in the call for papers. Authors without
EDAS user names will be required to register with the system using the same link
as above. Reviewers will be instructed to maintain the confidentiality of all
materials for submitted papers throughout the entire reviewing process.
Submissions
should contain no information that will be proprietary or confidential at the
time
of publication.

Please accept our apologies for multiple copies
+--------------------------------------------------------------------+
Dear Colleagues,
Please find below the CFP for MSAN 2005, the First International
Conference on Multimedia Services Access Networks (http://msan.org/).
Note that we have extended two weeks ago the submission deadline to
February 18, 2005. However, due to some server problems, the web page of
the conference was not accessible for a couple of days this week.
Moreover, even now you can find only an old version of the official page
at the above address, with the deadline still set to February 4.
Therefore, please disregard the information on the page, and keep in
mind that the correct deadline is February 18.
We are sorry for this inconvenience. If you have a paper to submit, and
you still need a couple of days to finish it, please write an e-mail to
the TPC Co-chair Francesco G.B. De Natale (denatale(a)ing.unitn.it).
Please note also, that there will be four workshops co-located with
MSAN:
- BWAN 2005: International Workshop on Broadband Wireless Access Network
on fixed network (http://www.bwan.org/)
- COMNETS 2005: Deployment Models and Technologies for Broadband
Community
Networks (http://www.comnets.org/)

CALL FOR PAPERS - MSAN 2005
First International Conference on Multimedia Services Access Networks
Technically co-sponsored by IEEE Communications Society
June 13-15, 2005, Orlando, Florida, USA
http://msan.org
** SCOPE **
Access networks (the ‘last-’ or ‘first-’ mile according to provider’s or
customer’s perspective) represent one of the most important parts in
telecommunication systems, being responsible for the high-quality,
reliable and secure delivery of services to end users. They also
encompass some of the most demanding networking problems, such as the
coexistence of a large variety of technologies based on both wired and
wireless solutions, the need of optimal integration with the core
network in terms of bandwidth and availability mismatch, the provision
of an acceptable quality of service in very different application
scenarios and traffic conditions. Perhaps, the most important challenge
is that the design of access networks – from the analysis of
requirements to the implementation and operation of the system – can
only be successful if it is based on an integrated approach, taking into
account the needs of different user groups, the technical constraints
posed by different application technologies, as well as the related
business and societal aspects.
Within this framework, MSAN’05 is intended to provide a unique
international forum to explore the new research frontiers in the field
of current and next generation multimedia service access networks.
Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can improve the
knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient access
technologies and the relevant provision of advanced multimedia
applications.
** TOPICS OF INTEREST **
Topics of interest are organized in three tracks addressing
respectively: access network technologies (with particular emphasis on
network design methodologies, protocols, analysis of performance and
quality of service); multimedia service delivery (mainly focusing on the
integration/adaptation between multimedia data processing and
transmission techniques and access networks characteristics);
implementation, operation and performance (providing an opportunity to
present innovative applications and testbeds for the above technologies,
as well as new approaches to testing and performance evaluation). Topics
of interest include but are not limited to:
Track 1: Access technologies and networks in MSANs (technologies and
protocols)
- Wire-based access (PON, FTTx, xDSL)
- Wireless fixed access solutions (802.11x and 802.16 networks)
- Mobile and nomadic access (3G and beyond, WiFi, etc.)
- Other emerging technologies (power lines, CATV, DOCSIS, FSO)
- Integration/migration among different technologies
(heterogeneous nets, seamless handover)
- Integration with core network
- Handling bandwidth and availability mismatch between optical
and wireless
Track 2: Delivery of multimedia services
- Technologies for multimedia-multimodal services
- Streaming over IP (VoIP, packet video, rate control, error control)
- Scheduling and allocation of network resources (bandwidth
allocation, power management, etc.)
- Quality of service (at network and application level)
- Terminals and devices
- Security issues
Track 3: MSAN implementation, operation and performance
- Testbeds and laboratory experiments
- Performance evaluation and measurements
- Interoperability of last mile solutions
- Case studies of novel networking solutions and services implemented
- Application techniques, tools and experiences (e.g., health,
tourism, e-government, entertainment)
- Specific operation and management issues
- Planning and design methodology and tools
