To ensure reliable network operation, new design and management techniques must be constantly devised to respond to the rapid network and service evolution. As a recent and relevant example, deployments of 5G communication networks will soon enter their second phase, during which the network infrastructure will require upgrades to support new Ultra-Reliable services with availability of up to 6 nines. Similarly, disaster resiliency in communication networks is now attracting the attention of media, governments and industry as never before (consider, e.g., the worldwide network traffic deluge to support remote working during the current Covid19-pandemic!). Luckily, several new technical directions can be leveraged to provide new solutions for network reliability such as for example: increased network reconfigurability enabled by Software Defined Networking (SDN); integration/convergence of multiple technologies (optical, wireless, satellite, datacenter networks); enhanced forms of data/service replication, supported by, e.g., edge computing; network slicing, used to carve highly-reliable logical partitions of network, computing and storage resources. These, and many other technological transformations can enable next-generation high-reliability networks. Given the strong interest in both industry and academia towards reliability of telecom networks and cloud-computing infrastructures, we organize this IEEE TNSM Special Issue as a second Special Issue as part of a Series on Design and Management of Reliable Networks. in IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management, with the first issue published in September 2021. The Special Issue aims at the timely publication of recent and innovative research results on this important topic. This Special Issue is organized in collaboration with the International Conference on the Design of Reliable Communication Networks (DRCN), which was held in April this year. DRCN is a well-established forum for scientists from both industry and academy who have interest in reliability and availability of communication networks. As such, this Special Issue will also invite top-scored DRCN papers to share excellent results and new challenges in the field of reliable communication networks and services. However, today’s sensing-cloud paradigm does not genetically support trust management and privacy preservation; it also does not encourage information sharing in multi-stakeholder settings through incentives and payment mechanisms. The emerging blockchain and other distributed ledger technologies offer a possibility to 1) ensure data protection, 2) monetize information exchange, 3) reduce sharing and maintenance costs, and 4) to manage trust in multi-stakeholder settings. We solicit high quality position papers and research papers that address opportunities and challenges at the intersection of networked sensing/IoT, smart cities, and blockchain. We aim to set up a stage for industry and academia to share wins and lessons combining both disciplines. We welcome contributions to all relevant research on application, system, network and security. ENSsys@SenSys will be a highly interactive workshop. First, we invite ''mini-tutorials'' and demos from established energy harvesting systems - we aim to open ENSsys with a showcase of existing work to set a baseline of what is possible today and spark ideas for what can be built in the future. Demos previously presented in other venues are explicitly welcome. For new work, we invite short pitches on technical issues in energy harvesting systems that remain underserved or more radical positions that invite rethinking of current system design. We will use these pitches to organise several smaller, highly interactive workgroups. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: - Power management concepts, algorithms and circuits for energy-harvesting sensing systems - Hardware and software concepts, algorithms and circuits for intermittent computing - Middleware and services supporting interoperability between zero-energy networks - Resource management and operating system support for energy-harvesting sensing systems - Network-wide distributed energy management (e.g. routing, adaptive duty cycling, etc.) - Communication in intermittent-power domain - Online measurement of energy intake and consumption - Predicting energy intake and consumption - Ensuring reliable operation in energy-harvesting sensor systems - Modelling, simulation and tools for effective design of future energy harvesting sensing systems - Architectures and standards for energy-neutral, power-neutral or intermittent sensing systems - Internet of (battery-less) things - Experience with real-world deployments and innovative applications We are soliciting two types of short abstract submissions: Technical concept pitches (target 2 pages, hard limit 3 pages including references), which will receive feedback and guidance from the TPC; Position pitches (target 2 pages, hard limit 3 pages including references). Pitches that continue on to be full submissions for ENSsys@APSLOS in 2022 will receive special consideration and the same set of reviewers (where possible). ENSsys will also feature an ''Energy Harvesting Village.'' The poster/demo session has been a successful regular event at ICNP in past years. These sessions will provide a great chance for students and researchers to obtain feedback on their on-going research from knowledgeable conference attendees.
