Ubiquitous services impose new requirements to the entire infrastructure, from the system to the middleware and the applications that should be able to adapt traditional services to different mobile user terminals and profiles, and embed new functions and tools to support the new services and new requirements of the future scenario. The new Internet service infrastructure can only succeed on the basis of a strict synergism between the heterogeneous variety of mobile wireless devices and the fixed network organization that should suite and follow the requirements and constraints imposed by the wireless and mobile counterpart. The specific limitations of mobile wireless devices, such as discontinuity in connections, disconnection, and energy and resource shortages, connected with the new location- and context-sensitivity property, are challenging issues that call for a re-examination on the design of the middleware of both the fixed and the mobile counterpart. Only a new methodology to produce a synergic design of an integrated and unified middleware can permit the deployment of all viable and available services that make possible to consider new properties for fruition, mainly connected with the new features of context-awareness. Many different provisioning scenarios are on the way, from the possibility of providing non-strict real-time data streaming adapted to very different wireless devices, by taking advantage of caching and multicast wherever possible, to a possibility of creating dynamic and impromptu communities based on common current locality and on presently available heterogeneous devices, by taking into account different resources and energy consumption limitations. This first workshop intends to put together different experiences by providing a forum for researchers and engineers in academia and industry to compare and exchange new ideas, research results, experiences, and products about different aspects related to Ubiquitous and Mobile Internet. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to: * Distributed platforms * Content delivery architectures * Caching and replication * Peer-to-peer schemes * Context-based services and applications * Middleware and software supports * Mobile-enabled middleware mechanisms * Personalization and transcoding * Mobile code and mobile agent technology * Service deployment and adaptation * Resource discovery algorithms * Performance evaluation * Resource and network monitoring * Security issues * QoS-based protocols and servers * Resource and service management PAPER SUBMISSION SIUMI 2005 invites authors to submit original and unpublished work. Innovative solutions are required for the development, implementation and operation of distributed applications in complex IT environments full of diversity and heterogeneity. Today, systematic application development support is lacking for the emerging wide spectrum of distributed systems ranging from ambient intelligence to global computing scenarios. Following the evolution of the field, DAIS'05 will focus on models, technologies and platforms for interoperable, scalable and adaptable distributed applications within all kinds of computing environments. DAIS'05 is the fifth event in a series of successful international conferences, which started in 1997. DAIS'05 will provide a forum for researchers, application and platform service vendors and users, to review, discuss and learn about new approaches, concepts and experiences in the fields of distributed computing. DAIS'05 will include talks by invited speakers, full technical paper sessions, and work-in-progress presentations. CONFERENCE THEMES In keeping with the focus on models, technologies and platforms for interoperable, scalable and adaptable distributed applications, and in addition to its traditional themes, DAIS'05 especially encourages original unpublished papers addressing the following topics: - software architectures and frameworks for application reconfiguration and adaptation, - component frameworks (e.g. CORBA Components, EJB,.NET), - autonomous systems and architectures, - modelling, specifying, monitoring and management of context-aware and adaptive applications, - support for self-organisation and autonomic behaviour in distribution platforms, - application infrastructures for Service-oriented Architectures and Web Services, - application environments for specific technologies (e.g. GRID computing, mobile and wireless), - issues in enterprise-wide and large-scale application integration, model-driven development and testing, - application management and tuning, - development methodologies for ambient intelligence and sensor net applications, - semantic interoperability and semantic web services. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES DAIS'2005 seeks submissions for: - Full technical papers in no more than 12 pages (about 6000 words); - Work-in-progress papers, describing on-going work and interim results in no more than 5 pages. All papers must be original, unpublished, and not submitted simulta- neously for publication elsewhere. They will be refereed by the Pro- gram Committee. Accepted full papers will be published by Springer in the LNCS series. Submission format: PDF using the Springer LNCS style. PERVASIVE 2005 will include a poster, video and demo program to give researchers opportunity to present their research in a variety of engaging formats. We explicitly encourage submission of late breaking results and work in progress in these categories. For each category, we encourage the submission of a short paper describing the contribution and as an anchor point for future reference. Submissions must be in Adobe PDF format, conform to the Springer-Verlag LNCS style and up to 4 pages. All submissions will be handled using an electronic submission system. The submission will be open beginning of January 2005. Contributions will be reviewed and accepted short papers will be published in the adjunct proceedings of PERVASIVE 2005 which will be also electronically available from the web-site. The posters will be exhibited in the main conference area throughout the program. There will be a reception dedicated to the presentation of posters and demos. This will build on the huge success of the PERVASIVE 2004 doctoral colloquium held at the University of Linz, at which 28 PhD students from around the world discussed their work with an international group of advisors selected from across the pervasive computing community. The submission (approx. 6 pages/3000 words) should clearly state: * the original key idea of the thesis * the problem domain and the specific problem addressed * an overview of related work in the area of the PhD work * methodological approach * research carried out * the contribution made in the field of Pervasive Computing (for early work, state the expected contribution) Submissions in PDF format using the Springer-Verlag LNCS style should be sent by February 1st 2005 electronically dc.pervasive2005(a)hcilab.org. Workshops will be focussed and aimed at sharing of understandings, experiences, and ideas on particular aspects of pervasive computing. Eight workshops (W1-W8) will be held on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 in Munich. The submission deadline for these workshops is February 16, 2005 and notifications of accepted submissions will be sent by Tuesday, March 8, 2005. Additionally, there will be a workshop attached to PERVASIVE 2005 on Location- and Context-Awareness (LoCA 2005). This workshop will be held May 12-13, 2005 at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) near Munich. The submission deadline for LoCA 2005 is December 17, 2004 and notifications of accepted submissions will be sent by Monday, January 31, 2005. Please note that prospective workshop attendees require an invitation from the workshop organizers based on acceptance of submitted papers or explicit request.
