Wireless networking affects a number of fields, including healthcare, environmental, home appliances, education, military applications, among others. In general, designing, developing and testing of an efficient wireless network protocol is a great challenge for the researchers in these areas. Moreover, the development of an application specific protocol in any of these fields depends on various factors including the security, miniaturization, application constraints, hardware constraints, and energy requirements. The traditional trend in wireless network protocol design and development is towards maximization of the performance observed by the end-user, in terms of perceived throughput, delay, QoS, etc. Nevertheless, the rate of advances in battery technology continues to lag behind that of semiconductor technology, which is still well predicted by the celebrated Moore’s law. This imbalance in the rate of advances creates a gap between the energy a wireless network needs to operate and the battery capacity that powers its nodes. Hence, the requirement of Energy-Efficiency appears as an extremely important property of new protocols for wireless networks with battery-powered mobile nodes. Moreover, Energy-Efficiency is the tool to realize the vision of green wireless networks, which are deemed important these days due to the increasing share of wireless systems of the total energy expended in communications and networking systems. Energy-awareness contributes to achieving the task of energy-efficiency, as it provides the ability to networking protocols to adapt their operation according to the energy reserves of the network nodes and thus increase the energy-efficiency of a system. The objective of this special issue is to report state-of-the art results in energy-aware wireless networking protocols by welcoming contributions originating from both academic and industrial research. These should be original contributions solicited in relevant areas of energy-efficient wireless networking protocols. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full paper. Papers must (i) be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers), (ii) be in font size no smaller than 10 points, (iii) have pages in double column format with each column having dimensions 9.25” X 3.33”, a space of 0.33” between the two columns, and with no more than 55 lines of text per column, and (iv) fit properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5” X 11”). CFP: With mobile terminals becoming the primary Internet devices for most of the people in the world and smartphone users generating on average 10 times more traffic than other users, it is critical that Telco operators and ISPs adopt smarter traffic management and pricing strategies. Current forecasts expect mobile data traffic to grow by 300-500 times more over the next 10 years, whereas the capacity of cellular infrastructure only doubles every 2 years. By 2020, more than half of the revenue in the global broadband industry is likely to be from two business models: wholesale and .two-sided. fees for improved access capacity and quality. Those models require the enforcement of stringent policy control mechanisms for bandwidth management, QoS and service level agreements, according to subscriber policies with real-time perspective on usage, location, device and user type, radio access technology, network capacity and topology. In this area, several research challenges are still to be addressed: . How can the network be made service-, state- and/or context-aware in order to apply specific policies to enhance the end user experience (QoE)? . How can the service provider bridge QoE and QoS, and change the QoS level based on spending limits? . How can different IP flows of the same packet data network (PDN) be routed via different accesses? In addition, how is it possible to move IP flows of the same PDN from one access to another for seamless WLAN offload or for usage of WLAN access to connect to Internet without traversing operator's core network? . How can selected IP traffic be offloaded from the cellular infrastructure and save transmission costs? . How can mobile networks be optimized for mass machine-type communications/applications? . How to optimize the utilization of Digital Dividend (unprecedented amount of spectrum that becomes available as a result of the switchover from analog to digital terrestrial TV)? This timely feature topic issue of IEEE Communications Magazine will bring together researchers from industry, academia and standardization bodies to present and analyze the above challenging issues in the important area of managing traffic for existing and future mobile broadband networks, i.e. within and beyond the existing standardization frameworks (3GPP, 3GPP2, IEEE 802.16, etc.). Key characteristics envisaged are powerful network infrastructures, numerous applications and services, and the evolution of existing and the emergence of new business models, compared to today. The infrastructure will be highly pervasive: people, smart objects, machines and the surrounding space, all embedding devices (e.g., sensors, RFID tags, etc.), will result in a highly decentralized environment of resources, interconnected by dynamic Networks of Networks. These characteristics entail that management in the FI era will have additional complexity to support, which derives from the need to handle multiple, demanding and changing situations for the provision of QoE/QoS levels, the exploitation of the infrastructure for increased efficiency in QoE/QoS provision, and the support of diverse interactions, objectives and policies designated by business model aspects. Autonomic systems are seen as the most viable direction for realizing the FI era, at first due to their self-management and learning features. Self-management is essential for fast adaptations to changing situations. Learning can increase the reliability of decisions through knowledge, for instance, on situations encountered, on how they were addressed, and on the efficiency of the action plan. This opens the opportunity towards multiple and essentially heterogeneous management systems on top of a common managed infrastructure in both fixed and mobile Internet. This opportunity clearly leads to reductions in the OPEX and CAPEX, which need to be quantified, but also calls for a research on future Unified Management Framework that must allow diversity and evolution of business model, as well as Total Illusion of Ownership of shared infrastructure. In line with the targets of cost reduction is the achievement of "green" targets by the management systems. Autonomic systems call for the design, development and validation of functionality in the area of context acquisition and reasoning, the derivation and evaluation of policies, distributed optimization techniques, and learning for acquiring and sharing knowledge and experience. *Scope* Research is producing results in the area of autonomics/self-management. Now is the appropriate time for taking the essential steps that will show that the technology reaches maturity and, therefore, is closer to the market. In this respect, the special issue solicits innovative and high-quality work, as well as general, survey-like papers on relevant areas. Demonstrations -------------- MobiSys seeks proposals for live demonstrations of mobile computing technologies. Live demos provide an opportunity to give a flavor of real-life applications made possible by your system. Particularly encouraged are the demonstrations that include participation by conference attendees. Research prototypes as well as commercial products are welcome. However, MobiSys is not an appropriate forum for marketing or sales presentations. The presenter is expected to understand the system being demonstrated and explain the technical contributions of the system to the audience. Demonstrations of previously published systems are also welcome. Demonstrations will be selected based on the expected interest from the MobiSys audience. Awards will be given for the best demo of the session. A demo submission requires only an extended abstract no longer than one 8.5x11-inch page, including all figures and references, describing the demonstration as well as any special requirements (other than a demo booth/table). The extended abstract should be formatted in 8.5x11-inch pages, two columns, single-spaced, with a font no smaller than 10-point. The demo title should begin with “Demo:“. Submissions must be in Adobe PDF format. However, even more work on this area is needed to obtain significant results in improving the Quality of Life of patients and reducing medical errors and costs. First of all, a strict interaction and cooperation among medical specialists and ICT experts is necessary to define correct requirements for e-Health systems. Then, in order to effectively design and deploy reliable e-Health systems, a strong cooperation among several diverse research areas of ICT is necessary (i.e., bioengineering, wearable sensors, wireless communications, data fusion and processing, decision support systems and others). This is fundamental to make e-Health systems a reality, satisfying main requirements of reliability and effectiveness. IREHSS aims to provide a forum for the interaction of experts belonging to these different research areas, from wearable computing and ubiquitous connectivity to context-awareness, sensor data fusion, artificial intelligence, expert systems, databases, security and privacy. The main objective is to provide a forum for the interaction of these multiple areas as an important chance to discuss and understand what aspects have to be considered to provide effective e-health systems. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related to E-health, not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: - Wearable and Implantable sensors for healthcare - Wireless communications in healthcare - Service and device discovery - Data fusion and context elaboration - Privacy and security issues in healthcare - Middleware for e-health - Energy Efficiency in health monitoring - Artificial intelligence and expert systems - User interface, usability and acceptability of e-health systems - Healthcare applications for clinicians - Home monitoring and ambient assisted applications for healthcare - Power Management and energy-efficient design in Wireless Body Area Networks - System architecture and networking protocols for e-health systems - Medical data analysis, measurements and management - Modeling and performance evaluation - Semantic Web in Healthcare - Standards and frameworks Paper submission for regular papers must be limited to 6 pages including text, figures, references and appendices.
