CALL FOR PAPERS
SIMPLEX 2011: 3rd Annual Workshop on Simplifying Complex Networks for
Practitioners
24th June 2011, Minneapolis, USA
http://www.simplexconf.net
Co-located with IEEE ICDCS 2011
THEME
-----
Network science, sometimes also called "complex networks science", has
recently attracted much attention from the scientific community, mainly due
to the almost ubiquitous presence of complex networks in real-world systems.
Examples of complex networks are found in living organisms, in engineering
systems, as well as in social networks. Most of the real-world systems have
the required degree of complexity to be called "complex systems". Complexity
may have to do with the intricate dynamics of the interacting components,
with the non-trivial properties of the underlying network topology, or with
the sheer size of the system itself.
Despite the numerous workshops and conferences related to network science,
it is still a set of loosely interacting communities. Those communities
would benefit from better interactions.
Simplex aims at triggering different computer science communities (e.g.
communication networks, distributed systems) to propose research areas and
topics that should be tackled from the network science perspective. We also
seek contributions from network science that are relevant to solve practical
computer science problems. Two types of contributions are foreseen from
prospective authors. The first type would consist of use-cases of
theoretical tools and methods to solve practical problems. Such
contributions should be as usable as possible by practitioners in the
related field. The second type of contributions would come from
practitioners that have identified a problem that may be solved by tools
from network sciences. The point of such contributions is to make the
network sciences community aware of the importance of a high-impact problem,
and to suggest means by which the problem may be solved by the network
science community. Both contributions should stimulate interaction between
theoreticians and practitioners, and also have high potential impact in
either field.
Topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to:
- Application of complex network theory to the design of distributed and
mobile systems;
- Data mining of large scale networks;
- Analysis of dynamic and time-varying networks;
- Network robustness to failures and attacks;
- Machine learning and network science;
- Complex network theory applied to forwarding/routing problems
- Application of social network analysis to communication and computing
system design;
- Mobility and connectivity modelling;
- Network science and data&information retrieval;
- Complex network theory and security applications.

Scope and Overview
The 5th International Workshop on Localized Algorithms and Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks (LOCALGOS 2011) aims to cover comprehensively the algorithmic issues in the hot area of ad hoc and sensor networking.
This workshop concentrates on such network layer problems as data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed approaches where simple local node behavior achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes. The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on various aspects of localized algorithms and protocols in this rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks.
Topics of Interest
The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

2nd International Workshop on
SOFTWARE ENGINEERING FOR SENSOR NETWORK APPLICATIONS
May 22, 2011, Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii
http://www.sesena.info
info(a)sesena.info
In conjunction with ACM/IEEE Int. Conf. on Software Engineering (ICSE)
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a fundamental building-block of
the upcoming Internet of Things, as they enable seamless integration
of the digital and physical worlds. Despite the interest raised by
this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is
still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software
directly atop the operating system and by relying on the individual,
hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the
functional application requirements but also a number of challenging,
non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce re-
sources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable envi-
ronmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to
the difficulties.
In the WSN community there is a growing awareness of the need for
methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify the develop-
ment task and increase the confidence in the correctness and perfor-
mance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is
therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to
make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this
topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community.
The aim of SESENA11 is to attract researchers belonging to both the SE
and WSN communities, not only to exchange their recent research re-
sults on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core
open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop
welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The for-
mer will allow discussing in technical depth novel results with an au-
dience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will pro-
vide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views,
or previously-unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. SESENA11 will
also include a "speakers' corner" session composed by impromptu pre-
sentations where any of the attendees (including those without an ac-
cepted paper) will be given a chance to present their own views in
very short statements (e.g., 2-4 minutes).
TOPICS OF INTEREST
The workshop solicits contributions including, but not limited to, the
following aspects of SE for sensor networks:
* (macro)programming languages and compilers;
* testing and debugging;
* formal verification and model checking;
* model-driven approaches;
* interfacing WSNs and business software
SUBMISSIONS
Prospective participants are invited to submit research or position
papers containing original unpublished material describing ongoing
work and new ideas, mature research results, or experience reports.
Submissions must conform to the ICSE submission format and rules (see
http://2011.icse-conferences.org/content/submission-guidelines). Re-
search papers may not exceed 6 pages, position papers must be limited
to 2 pages.
Papers must be submitted electronically through CyberChairPro at
http://cyberchairpro.borbala.net/sesenapapers/submit.
The program committee will review all submissions for quality, rele-
vance, and their potential to trigger discussions at the workshop. Ac-
cepted papers will be published in the ICSE companion proceedings and
on the workshop web site.

http://www.rusmart.org
CALL FOR PAPERS
About the Conference
Next-generation mobile networks will evolve out of existing wired and
wireless networks of different nature by means of convergence, fusion
and mutual penetration; next-generation multimedia services in turn pose
new requirements and challenges on treatment of traffic within
communication systems – a certain degree of multilayer co-operation has
to be achieved. This forms a framework on harmonization of results
obtained separately in different areas of network research like network
performance evaluation, architecture and protocol design, and low layer
network design. The conference goal is in the identification,
investigation and integration of new algorithms, approaches,
architectures, methods and mechanisms to enable proper and efficient
operation of a next-generation IP-based wireless network. Therefore,
wireless networks and their interaction with wired networks shall be
widely examined and addressed throughout the conference.
The history of NEW2AN dates back to 1993, today it is an established
conference featured by proceedings published by Springer LNCS
(confirmed) and distinguished keynote speakers.

W1: Third International Workshop on Security and Privacy in Spontaneous
Interaction and Mobile Phone Use
Website : http://www.medien.ifi.lmu.de/iwssi2011/
Mobile devices in general, and mobile phones in particular, present unique
challenges not only in terms of user interface, battery life, and form
factor,
but also in terms of ensuring their users' privacy and security. Privacy
and
security are often in conflict with another and have been the topic of many
research projects. Emerging mobile payment and ticketing solutions
require the
secure transmission and storage of financial information, while electronic
health records or access certificates/tokens might imply the use of highly
sensitive personal information on such devices. Securing the potentially
massive amount of interactions using mobile devices is difficult, because
typically there will be no a priori shared information such as passwords,
addresses, or PIN codes between the phone, its user, and the service
they want
to use. Additionally, mobile devices often lack powerful user interfaces to
support classical authentication methods.
The 3rd International Workshop on Security and Privacy in Spontaneous
Interaction and Mobile Device Use (IWSSI/SPMU'2011) provides a forum to
discuss these challenges and to put forward an agenda for future
research. The
workshop is intended to foster cooperation between research groups and to
establish a highly connected research community. Authors of selected
workshop
submissions will be invited to submit an extended version to a special
issue
in a renowned international journal.

W2: First International Workshop on Frontiers in Activity Recognition using
Pervasive Sensing
Website : http://di.ncl.ac.uk/iwfar/
Activity recognition (AR) emerged as a key area of research in pervasive
computing and plays a central role in the field's vision of developing
context-
aware systems and interaction. The general objective for current activity
recognition systems is to analyze continuous sensor data streams and to
detect
and discriminate certain activities of interest, and to reject portions of
sensor data that cover unknown or idle activities. A wealth of algorithmic
approaches to activity recognition have been developed that employ state-of-
the-art signal processing and machine learning techniques. Reviewing the
current literature in the field may give the impression that the general
problem of activity recognition has almost been solved. State-of-the-art AR
systems achieve recognition rates of well beyond 80 or 90 percent across
tasks. This opens up the question which other - more challenging - activity
recognition problems should be addressed in the future. More generally
speaking, this also relates to the question how a future AR system
should look
like. What will be the challenges of AR that go beyond the aforementioned
classification approach and could, for example, comprise a quantitative
measure
of the quality of performing an activity rather than only detecting an
activity?
IWFAR 2011, a satellite workshop of Pervasive 2011, is supposed to focus on
new "frontiers in activity recognition using pervasive sensing" in the
aforementioned sense. We want to stimulate and explore the creativity of
the
community regarding new applications and approaches to AR. The latter could
comprise radically new procedures like, for example, biologically
inspired AR
methods or rigorously exploiting general time-series analysis approaches
(e.g.
from the financial domain). Recent publications in the AR community
represent
quite promising starting points (cf. e.g. time-delay embedding for the
analysis of repetitive activity patterns, which was inspired by the
physics of
complex systems). IWFAR 2011 provides a forum for researchers and
practitioners to gather and present new ideas, and discuss aspects
related to
applications and techniques that go beyond classic activity recognition.
Covering a more or less "emerging" field, expected contributions would also
cover more speculative ideas that are too specific for the broader
audience of
the main conference. We solicit high-quality technical papers that shall be
presented orally while leaving enough time for discussions.

W3: First Workshop on Pervasive Urban Applications (PURBA)
Website : http://purba.mit.edu
Over the past decade, the development of digital networks and operations
has
produced an unprecedented wealth of information. Handheld electronics,
location devices, telecommunications networks, and a wide assortment of
tags
and sensors are constantly producing a rich stream of data reflecting
various
aspects of urban life. For urban planners and designers, these
accumulations
of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of
the
city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this
condition of the hybrid city – which operates simultaneously in the digital
and physical realms – also poses difficult questions about privacy,
scale, and
design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move
toward
achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city
functions –
socially, economically and yes, even psychologically.
This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to
discuss
and explore the research challenges and opportunities in applying the
pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-
disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life
and exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that
benefit
citizens, urban planners, and policy makers.

W4: First Workshop on Hybrid Pervasive/Digital Inference
Website : TBA
Two different lines of research have developed around the topic of making
inferences from data. One line arises from the analysis of physical data
captured directly by sensors of real-world behaviors. These data include
streams of GPS and WiFi sensors, accelerometers, compasses, gyroscopes,
audio,
and video, which are often processed to infer location, motion,
co-presence,
and identity. Another line arises from data captured about online
behaviors.
These include email messages, web browsing histories, application
traces, and
keystroke loggers, online calendars, document repositories, tagging
databases,
and social networks. Analysis of online data sources is performed to infer
topics of interest, retrieve information, and enhance collaboration.
We see these two data stream types coming together in the near future.
Smartphones have made it easy to collect physical data about people. Web
2.0
technologies have encouraged users to curate more information online.
Together, these colliding trends will inferences more accurate, more
detailed,
more "24-7" than ever before, and will make completely new kinds of
inferences
possible.

W5: Second International Workshop on the Web of Things
Website : http://www.webofthings.com/wot/2011
The world of embedded devices has experienced radical changes; real-world
objects such as home appliances, industrial machines and wireless sensor
and
actuator networks embed powerful computers which often can connect to the
Internet. Likewise, more and more common objects are being tagged with RFID
tags or barcodes. Considering the recent progress in mobile communications
(increased bandwidth for cell phone networks, as well as urban wireless
broadband networks), Internet access will very likely become a commodity
accessible from most real-world devices. This convergence of physical
computing devices (wireless sensor networks, mobile phones, embedded
computers, etc.) and the Internet provides new design opportunities and
challenges, as digital communication networks will soon not only contain
virtual data (images, text, etc.), but also real objects. While the
"Internet
of Things" has become a well-known brand for a set of research issues in
the
pervasive and ubiquitous computing communities, the focus of this research
theme has been on establishing connectivity in a variety of challenging and
constrained networking environments.
Our hypothesis is that the "Web of Things" is the next logical step in the
ongoing evolution of how pervasive and ubiquitous computing have enabled
new
applications and provided new opportunities. The Web of Things takes the
next
step from establishing connectivity and thus the ability to communicate
with
Things, to a vision where Things become seamlessly integrated into the Web,
not just through Web-based user interfaces of specific applications, but by
simply blending into the information space created by the Web and its
architectural principles. The "Web of Things" solicits contributions in the
areas of architectures for a Web of things, decentralization, services, Web-
scale applications, as well as questions of user interface and interaction
design, where a Web of Things requires application designers to think
beyond
standard Web browsers and embrace alternative clients such as mobile
devices
or even more constrained environments.

* Vlad Trifa (ETH Zurich / MIT)

W6: First Workshop on Emerging Mobile Sensing Technology, System, and
Application
Website : http://sites.google.com/site/mobisense2011/home
Mobile sensing is rapidly gaining attentions in research and industry
due to
the proliferation of mobile devices equipped with increasing number of
sensors, and widespread of sensor based mobile applications. Mobile sensing
applications have penetrated into many application domains such as
fitness/health, gaming and entertainment, security and privacy, navigation,
mobile search and advertising, by taking advantages of the availability of
multiple sensors on state-of-the-art mobile devices. In the era of
breakthroughs on intelligent pervasive and mobile computing,
practitioners and
researchers have to address new challenges and requirements in order to
meet

W7: First International Workshop on Smart Mobile Applications
Website : http://www.mobile.ifi.uni-
muenchen.de/aktuelles/smartapps2011/index.html
Mobile computing is a related area of pervasive computing. Mobile
applications
are rapidly developing and becoming more and more important.
Currently, smartphones with more advanced computing capabilities and
connectivity than classic mobile phones offer more functionalities and run
smarter applications. Mobile platforms comprise an increasing number of
different sensors such as photosensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes etc,
thus
allowing sophisticated contextualized applications. In addition, users
as well
as developers benefit from an increasing number of market places and online
stores for mobile applications. The concept of a mobile "app" that can be
purchased via centralized hubs is already very common among the growing
number
of users.
Specifically, we solicit original research contributions in the following
areas:
* App concepts and technologies for different mobile platforms
* Context-Matching, Context-Aggregation and Reasoning
* Applications of Artificial Intelligence to Mobile Applications
* Mobile Social Networks
* Ensuring Privacy and Security for Enterprise Applications
* Cross-Platform Software Design and Development

* Claudia Linnhoff-Popien (LMU Munich, Germany)
* Stephan Verclas (T-Systems International GmbH, Germany)

W8: Intelligibility and Control in Ubicomp
Website : http://research.edm.uhasselt.be/pervasive-intelligibility/
Due to the proactive and complex dynamics of pervasive computing
applications,
it is important that systems are intelligible to allow end-users to
understand
“what the systems know, how they know it, and what they are doing”.
Furthermore, these systems should put end-users at the center of control by
empowering them to better co-ordinate, control, and personalize pervasive
systems. Intelligibility and control are crucial to improve the
usability of
these novel, and possibly unintuitive, systems and to help users
understand,
appreciate, trust, and ultimately adopt them. With this workshop, we
seek to
provide a forum for exchanging design principles, programming techniques,
toolkits and insights derived from real world studies towards building
intelligible and user-controllable pervasive computing systems. Drawing
upon
the state-of-the-art, our goal is to refine existing and identify new
directions for research in intelligibility and control for pervasive
computing
that will foster further work in the community.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Novel applications in pervasive computing highlighting
intelligibility
and/or user-driven control.
* Programming techniques (e.g., design patterns, models), algorithms,
architectures and toolkits to support intelligibility and/or control.
* Interaction techniques and user interfaces to support intelligibility
and/or control, including information visualization techniques to help
users
better interpret explanations from pervasive computing applications.
* User studies exploring design principles to build intelligible
pervasive
systems.
* Intelligible smart objects.
* Evaluation metrics and methods to assess support for
intelligibility and
control in pervasive computing systems.
We intend to communicate the results of the workshop to the larger
pervasive
computing community by submitting an article to a magazine (e.g., IEEE
Pervasive). If the papers and discussions reflect sufficient progress and
cohesiveness, we will try to work toward producing a special issue of a
journal or possibly an edited book.
Organizers:
* Jo Vermeulen, Hasselt University, Belgium
* Brian Y. Lim, Carnegie-Mellon University, USA
* Fahim Kawsar, Bell Labs, Belgium and Lancaster University, UK

W9: 2nd Workshop on Programming Models for Mobile and Pervasive Systems.
Website : http://www.stevens.edu/pmmps/
Pervasive mobile computing is here, but how these devices and services
should
be programmed is still something of a mystery. Programming mobile and
pervasive applications is more than than building client-server or
peer-peer
systems with mobility, and it is more than providing usable interfaces for
mobile devices that may interact with the surrounding context. It includes
aspects such as disconnected and low-attention working, spontaneous
collaboration, evolving and uncertain security regimes, and integration
into
services and workflows hosted on the internet. In the past, efforts have
focused
on the form of human-device interfaces that can be built using mobile and
distributed computing tools, or on human computer interface design based
on,
for example, the limited screen resolution and real estate provided by a
smartphone. Much of the challenge in building pervasive systems is in
bringing
together users' expectations of their interactions with the system with the
model of a physical and virtual environment with which users interact in
the
context of the pervasive application.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers in programming
languages, software architecture and design, and pervasive systems to
present
and discuss results and approaches to the development of mobile and
pervasive
systems. The goal is to begin the process of developing the software design
and development tools necessary for the next generation of services in
dynamic
environments, including mobile and pervasive computing, wireless sensor
networks, and adaptive devices.
Organizers:
* Dominic Duggan, Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ
* Simon Dobson, University of St Andrews UK

W10: 4th Workshop on Pervasive Advertising
Website : TBA
The overall topic of the workshop is the application of Pervasive Computing
technologies for advertising purposes. This topic is of particular
interest at
this time because advertising is considered by multiple researchers as one
main business models for pervasive computing and has recently been
called the
"Killer application for the 21st century". The market is rapidly
growing, and
major companies (Apple iAd, JCDecaux, Wall, ClearChannel, Google etc.) are
invested in pervasive advertising projects. The main hinderance today is
that
advertisers lack the technological skills, and pervasive computing
researchers
and practitioners lack the advertising knowledge and experience.
Furthermore,
these groups rarely talk to each other.
Based on the success of previous workshops we envision to continue and
further
establish the workshop series as a prime venue bringing together people
from
academia and practice, hence driving forward research in the field of
Pervasive
Advertising. We believe that our research community has a responsibility to
contribute towards a joint understanding of how pervasive advertising of
the
future will look like. To this end, this workshop looks at the future of
advertising from the perspective of pervasive computing. It aims to
provide a
foundational structure for the field and will attempt to sketch a
roadmap for
further research and deployment challenges in this domain.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) offer unprecedented capabilities for
integrating sensing with computing and communication as well as for
distributed sensing, coordination and control. While WSNs have been a
subject of intensive research for about a decade, most research activities
to date focused on sensor nodes typically deployed in static, pre-determined
locations with sensor readings taken at regular intervals and multi-hopped
to a static sink for subsequent storage and analysis. The next evolutionary
step for sensor networks is to handle mobility in all its forms. That is,
mobility of sinks, mobility of sensors and actuators as well as mobility of
code (i.e. applications). The mobility extension represents a more recent
research subject in sensor networking; mobility opens up a whole new level
of research opportunities and challenges in WSNs, and significantly expands
the types of applications for which WSNs can be used. This workshop aims to
identifying the benefits and challenges from such a step and outline the
state of the art in this particularly promising research area.

* Overview:
e-Energy 2011 is the second international conference on energy-efficient
computing and networking. Due to the increasing significance of power
consumption in computing and networking, the goal of e-Energy is to bring
together researchers, developers, practitioners working in this area to
discuss recent and innovative results, and identify future directions and
challenges. The continuing spread of Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) has contributed much to the reduction of energy
consumption in many areas of everyday life. Nevertheless ICT infrastructure
continues to expand in capacity and reach, and needs to be more energy-
efficient itself. e-Energy addresses all cyber infrastructure such as
the varied
fields of servers and communication infrastructures, services in data
centers,
end-systems in home and office environments, broadband access networks,
sensor networks, cloud computing, smart grids and future networks such as
the Internet of Things.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Instrumentation and measurement of energy-efficient computing and
networking
- Energy and performance profiling, accounting of energy consumption
- Metrics, benchmarks, interfaces, tools
- Monitoring and management concepts
- Energy, performance, quality of service and other resource tradeoffs
- Energy-efficient networking and protocols
- Energy-efficient peer-to-peer networking and overlays
- Future energy-efficient architectures
- Energy-efficient application design
- Load, heat, and resource modeling
- Load, heat, and resource management
- Reliability and power management
- Energy-efficient grid and data-center technology
- Energy-efficient cloud computing
- Energy-efficiency and virtualization
- Energy-efficiency, resource sharing, and security
- SmartGrids: new computing and networking contributions
- Sensing techniques and sensor networks for energy awareness
- Energy-efficient network components (switches, routers, transceivers,
amplifiers, etc.)
- Design methodologies and tools for energy-efficient services
- Security challenges in energy-efficient computing and networking
* Important Dates:
Full papers due: January 14, 2011
Notification of acceptance: March 21, 2011
Final versions due: April 22, 2011
* Publication:
e-Energy invites submission of two categories of paper: full papers and
discussion papers. Full papers should be no longer than 10 pages and
discussion papers should be no longer than 4 pages. All papers must
present original theoretical and/or experimental research that has not been
previously published, accepted for publication, or is not currently under
review by another conference or journal. Submissions must be in PDF-
format using the double-column ACM format given at
http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates.
Further submission information can be accessed via
http://www.e-energy-conf.org/.
Proceedings are intended to be published by ACM and appear in the ACM
library
and IEEE Xplore (subject to agreement by ACM and the IEEE).
Full papers should include a detailed description of research either in
progress
or completed. A discussion paper describes innovative and novel ideas
that have
not yet been fully explored, but have the potential to influence the
research community.
A discussion paper could, for example, expose a new problem, advocate a new
approach, re-frame or debunk existing work, report unexpected results
from a
deployment, or propose new evaluation methodologies. We especially
encourage
submissions of early-stage work and enticing but unproven ideas.
