CALL FOR PAPERS
SAHNS 2011
The Third International Workshop on
Specialized Ad Hoc Networks and Systems
Minneapolis, USA, June 23, 2011
http://www.cs.wmich.edu/~alfuqaha/SAHNS2011/
In conjunction with the IEEE 31st International Conference
on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS 2011)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. SCOPE
The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia,
industry and government to present their latest research findings in
specialized ad hoc networks and systems.
As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of
ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application
oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system
research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc
networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific
for well-defined classes of applications or even individual applications.
We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad
hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc
networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of
specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc
networks.
It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions
specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not
interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks
and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of
ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested
in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but
is instead interested in specialized solutions for their
application-oriented subclasses.
One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area
Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be
pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally
significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned
incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural
disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization
networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of
resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed
resources or services.
Areas and topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to:
a) Design issues for SAHNS:
o Novel network and system architectures

Call for Papers
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications Cooperative Networking
Challenges and Applications
Cooperative networking has received significant attention recently as an
emerging network design strategy for future wireless networks. In
cooperative networking, individual network nodes can cooperate to implement
network goals in a coordinated way, and the cooperation can take place in a
cross-layer fashion. Successful cooperative networking can prompt the
development of advanced wireless networks to cost-effectively provide
multimedia services and applications such as telecommuting, video
conferencing, interactive media, real-time Internet games, etc., anytime,
anywhere. However, the impact and challenges of cooperative networking
on
the cross-layer design beyond cooperative transmissions are not
well-understood yet. Some fundamental aspects requiring immediate studies
include: theoretical tools to guide the design of cooperative networking
systems, effective incentive mechanisms for cooperation, new protocol design
for cooperative networking, and compatible deployment of cooperative
networking over the existing infrastructure.
This special issue aims at reporting the state-of-the-art research and
development on cooperative networking. Original, unpublished contributions
and invited articles, reflecting various aspects of cooperative networking
are encouraged. The topics of interest for the special issue include, but

* Cooperative routing at the network layer, transport layer issues such as
multi-homing transport layer
protocols, end-to-end flow and congestion
control;
* Application layer such as peer-to-peer system design over cooperative
networks;
* Cross layer design and optimization, and heterogeneous QoS provisioning;
* Topology control and mobility management;
* Resource management;
* Security support to complement/enhance cooperative networking;
* Information theoretic aspects, asymptotic performance analysis, coding
schemes and scaling law;
* System modeling and experimental study such as those in cellular network,

Call for Papers
IEEE Communications Magazine
Feature Topic Issue on The Internet of Things
The Internet has experienced a tremendous growth in the past three
decades, evolving from a network of a few hundred hosts to a platform
linking billions of “things” globally, including individual people as
well as enterprises of various sizes, through computers of any conceivable
size and capability and the applications running on them. The growth of
Internet shows no signs of slowing down and it steadily becomes the cause
of a new pervasive paradigm in computing and communications. This new
paradigm enhances the traditional Internet into a smart Internet of Things
(IoT) created around intelligent interconnections of diverse objects in
the physical world, such as vehicles, cellphones, habitats and habitat
occupants, through low-cost information gathering devices, such as sensors
and RFID tags, that facilitate fast-paced interactions among the objects
themselves as well as the objects and persons in any place and at any
time. IoT will usher a wide range of smart applications and services to
cope with many of the challenges that individuals and organizations face
in their everyday lives. For example, remote healthcare monitoring systems
will help alleviate the severe shortage of healthcare personnel in an
ageing society; intelligent transportation systems will help reduce
traffic congestion and inevitably ills caused by it such as air-pollution;
smart distribution systems from utility grids to supply chains will
improve the quality and reduce the cost of their respective goods and
services; tagged objects can be recycled more efficiently by being
retrieved from bulk waste disposal, and so on. These applications would
dramatically change the way our societies function and thus have a big
impact on many aspects of people’s life in the years to come. IoT is not
a mere extension of today’s Internet or an internet of Internet systems.
It represents intelligent end-to-end systems that enable smart solutions
and as such it covers a diverse range of technologies, including sensing,
communications, networking, computing, information processing, and
intelligent control technologies. To make IoT a reality, significant
research needs to be conducted within and across these technological
aspects of IoT. This has recently motivated a voluminous amount of
research activities in the hot field and this Feature Topic Issue intends
to capture and expose it to the IEEE ComMag readership.
Scope of the issue
This feature topic issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the
state-of-the-art development in technology, application, and
standardization in the field of the Internet of Things, and present an
insight of future research opportunities and challenges in this field. The
feature issue will consider original survey and research articles written
in a tutorial style. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Network and system architectures of IoT
* Sensing technologies for IoT
* Short-range Communications for IoT
* Sensor networking technologies for IoT
* Access network technologies for IoT
* Information processing, management, and distribution in IoT
* RFID applications in IoT
* Smart grid applications in IoT
* Healthcare applications in IoT
* Environmental monitoring applications in IoT
* Intelligent transportation applications in IoT
* Public safety in IoT
* Security and privacy management for IoT
* Application systems and testbeds for IoT
* Standardization activities for IoT
Manuscript Submission
Authors should submit their manuscripts in PDF format electronically via
the Manuscript Central (http://commag-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The diffusion of lightweight, powerful portable devices, also enriched
with a
variety of sensing capabilities, is enabling new ways for users to
communicate,
and is laying the foundation for the ubiquitous networking idea to
become a
reality. Risen from the ashes of traditional MANETs, which failed to
cope with
the variability of a network solely made up from mobile users,
opportunistic
communications have recently stood out and gained a lot of research
attention.
Opportunistic networking is the enabling strategy for communications in
a mobile
network. The idea of opportunistically exploiting extemporary
contacts among
the users of the network poses new and challenging problems, as
well as
providing with novel and promising opportunities, to the networking
research
community. The AOC 2011 workshop will be a meeting point for people
working in
the area and it will constitute a forum to exchange ideas, discuss
solutions,
and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and
application
developers, both from industry and academia. The AOC 2011 workshop
will have a
primary interest in the new directions of opportunistic
communications
represented by mobile social networking, content-centric
networking, and
participatory sensing. More in general, papers tackling issues
related to
opportunistic networking and computing are welcome. Original papers
addressing
both theoretical and practical aspects of autonomic and
opportunistic
communications are solicited, as well as papers describing

Call for
Papers for MobiCom 2011
The 17th Annual International Conference on Mobile
Computing and Networking
Planned for September
2011, Las Vegas, NV, USA
http://www.sigmobile.org/mobicom/2011/
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
ACM MobiCom 2011, the Annual International Conference on Mobile
Computing and Networking, is the seventeenth in a series of annual
conferences sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE dedicated to addressing the
challenges in the areas of mobile computing and wireless and mobile
networking. The conference will be held in Las Vegas, NV, USA, in late
September, 2011.
The MobiCom conference series serves as a highly selective, premier
international forum addressing networks, systems, algorithms, and
applications that support mobile computers and wireless networks.
Besides the regular conference program, MobiCom 2011 will also include
a set of workshops, panels, research demonstrations, and a poster
session that includes the ACM Student Research Competition. More
information on these activities, including submission deadlines, can
be found at http://www.sigmobile.org/mobicom/2011.
PAPERS: Authors are invited to submit full papers presenting new
research related to the theory and practice of mobile computing and
wireless networking that pertain to the layer two or above of the OSI
protocol stack. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to the
following.
*Architectures, protocols, and algorithms for various wireless and
mobile networks, such as wireless LANs, wireless mesh networks,
cellular data networks, delay-tolerant networks, mobile ad hoc
networks, sensor networks, personal area networks, and vehicular
networks
* System design, implementation, and evaluation of wireless systems
and mobile applications
* Real-world measurements and characterization
* Performance-oriented design and evaluation focused on networks and
mobile applications
* Foundational underpinnings of wireless networks
* Testbed design and implementation
* Cross-layer design for mobile and wireless networks ranging from the
PHY layer to applications
* Networks involving novel technologies such as UWB, MIMO, directional
antennas, software radios, visible light communications and underwater
networking
* Architectures, algorithms and protocols for dynamic spectrum usage,
white spaces, and cognitive networks
* Techniques that deal with low power and energy limitations
* Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and
networking
* Security, privacy, and trustworthiness of mobile and wireless systems
* Emerging topics, e.g., robotic swarms, 60 GHz networking, social
networking and novel applications enabled by mobile and wireless
networking systems
MobiCom’11 will be a diverse conference and we strongly encourage the
submission of mobile systems, experimental and theoretical papers. The
program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are
appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or
experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the
innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and
realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be
evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the
algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the
evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is
challenging because of the significant impact that the physical
environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must
carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used
and identify its strengths and weaknesses.
The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers
will be published in the conference proceedings.
CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission
of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless
networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge
existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These
challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may
open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future
research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work
are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an
exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight
and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges
papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be
part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom
proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission
procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must
start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title."
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled
electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full
paper. Papers must (i) be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for
"Challenges" papers), (ii) be in font size no smaller than 10 points,
(iii) have pages in double column format with each column having
dimensions 9.25” X 3.33”, a space of 0.33” between the two columns,
and with no more than 55 lines of text per column, and (iv) fit
properly on US letter-sized paper (8.5” X 11”). More detailed
instructions will be available in the conference web pages.
All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through
double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are
withheld from the reviewers. See the Mobicom 2011 website for
detailed instructions to authors on preparing a double-blind
manuscript. Authors' names must not appear anywhere in the paper or in
the PDF file. Submitted papers must be original work, and a paper
with substantial similarity must neither be already published, nor be
currently under review for publication in any other venue. Please

SIGCOMM 2011 - Call for Posters
The SIGCOMM poster session showcases works-in-progress. The setting is
informal. Topics of interest are the same as research topics in the
SIGCOMM conference call for papers.
Although anyone can submit a poster, preference will be given to
posters where the primary contribution is from one or more
students. The SIGCOMM 2011 Poster and Demo committee will review all
demo proposals. At the conference, a student must present student
posters. Authors of accepted papers in SIGCOMM 2011 may not submit a
poster on the same work in those papers.
Student Research Competition
The SIGCOMM poster session will also serve as an ACM student research
competition. Qualified entrants must have current ACM student
membership, have graduate or undergraduate student status at the time
of submission (May 2011, below), and be submitted by a single student
author. Supervisors are not permitted to coauthor the poster. (Please
contact the poster chairs if this restriction represents a hardship.)
Undergraduates and graduate students will be treated in separate
divisions. (Students starting their first year of graduate school at
the time of the conference will be considered as undergraduates.) A
small travel supplement is made available to accepted entrants: please
also submit applications for travel grant support. The ACM SRC program
is sponsored by Microsoft Research. Winners will advance to ACM Grand
Finals of the Student Research Competition to compete against the
winners of other ACM conferences.
Why Should You Submit a Poster?
This is a great chance especially for students to obtain interesting
and valuable feedback on ongoing research from a knowledgeable crowd
at the conference. In addition, top few submissions will be forwarded
for publication to ACM SIGCOMM's newletter, the ACM Computer
Communication Review (CCR). Travel Grants for Student Posters
Students who are submitting posters are highly encouraged to examine
if they are eligible for student travel grants.
What is a Poster?
We define a poster to be A0 paper size in portrait mode (841x1189mm),
to which you can affix visually appealing material that describes your
research. Alternatively, you can use the space as a continuum. You
should prepare the best material (visually appealing and succinct)
that effectively communicates your research problem, techniques,
results, and what is novel and important about your work. Note that
you do not submit such a large-format image; only an abstract
describing in text what the poster would present.
What and Where to Submit
Please submit a two-page abstract on the work to
https://sigcomm2011posters.cs.wisc.edu. The decision will be taken
primarily by reading the abstract.
Submissions are single blind, so please include authors' names and
affiliation.
Content:
The abstract should clearly state:
• the problem being addressed;
• what makes this problem interesting, important, and difficult;
• your approach to the problem;
• the key contribution
In the final version of the abstract, you should include a URL that
provides additional information about your work to the attendees.
Formatting: Prepare your abstract using ACM conference style, modified
to 10pt. Concretely, two columns, minimum 10pt times with 0.75 inch
margins and 1/3 inch space between columns. The abstract must be
within the page limit and in PDF format. Word documents will not be
accepted. At the conference, we will distribute the abstracts to all
conference attendees.

Betreff: [Tccc] CFP: IEEE JSAC on BWC for High Speed Vehicles

[Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message]
Happy New Year!
*****************************************************************
* CALL FOR PAPERS *
* IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications *
* Broadband Wireless Communications for High Speed Vehicles *
*****************************************************************
With the development of mobile communication systems such as long term
evolution (LTE), WiMax and International Mobile Telecommunications
(IMT)-Advanced, broadband wireless multimedia services will be
prevalent in the near future. Meanwhile, high speed vehicles such as
airplanes and high speed trains play an increasingly important role in
people’s lives, since they provide a relatively stable and spacious
environment for long distance travel. As a result, there will be a
strong demand for broadband wireless communications (BWC) for high
speed vehicles to provide information and onboard entertainment
services to passengers. BWC is also needed in vehicle control systems
for operational information such as fault sensor measurements and
diagnostics, video surveillance, and so on. Interesting research areas
and various challenges arise when designing BWC systems for high speed
vehicles. For example, a new network structure is needed since a
direct transmission signal between the passenger and
infrastructure-base-station experiences serious deterioration when
traveling through the speeding vehicle. Distributed antenna and radio
over fiber can be employed for vehicle-to-infrastructure
communication. Moreover, due to the lack of accurate channel
information, innovative radio resource allocation schemes are also
needed at the infrastructure-base-station to assign resources to high
speed vehicles. The fast movement of high speed vehicles through
cellular networks causes frequent handovers and drop-offs, degrading
the user experience. This prompts the need for designing fast and
reliable handover and random access schemes. In addition, novel
physical layer techniques of BWC in high speed mobile environments
need to be considered. In particular, there is a strong need to
evaluate the effect of Doppler spread and revisit the noncoherent
coding, modulation and MIMO schemes. Therefore, BWC for high speed
vehicles is a pressing research topic that has huge applications. It
is imperative to develop the key techniques enabling BWC for high
speed vehicles. The goal of this issue is to bring together the most
updated research contributions in this area. We are soliciting high
quality, original and unpublished work in BWC for high speed vehicles,
especially those pushing the envelope in terms of vehicle speed and
communication bandwidth. The topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:
* Novel network architecture
* Satellite communications
* Drive-through Internet
* Distributed antenna systems and radio over fiber for
vehicle-to-infrastructure communications
* High speed vehicle-to-vehicle communication
* BWC for high speed vehicle control systems
* Radio resource allocation to high speed vehicles
* Fast and reliable handover and random access schemes
* Wireless channel modeling and estimation
* Effects of Doppler spread
* Modulation schemes for high speed vehicles
* Antenna array and MIMO
* Prototype and field tests
Prospective authors should prepare their manuscripts following the
IEEE J-SAC format described at
http://www.jsac.ucsd.edu/Guidelines/info.html. Authors should submit a
PDF version of their complete manuscript to http://www.edas.info. The
timetable is as follows:
