Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-enabled solutions are becoming very
popular. UAVs (or drones) are attractive owing to their
flexibility and potential cost-efficiency in comparison with
conventional aircraft. Drones are perceived as game changers and
development enablers since they may be used to deploy and optimize the
network to improve its coverage, build routes and fix network partition
to ensure the best communication performance, reduce energy consumption,
and dynamically respond to detected network problems. The benefits are
limited only by imagination.
This special session welcomes contributions dealing with all facets of
wireless communication with drones, including channel modeling,
integration into cellular networks (4G, 5G, and b5G), system aspects,
theoretical studies, algorithm and protocol design, as well as
requirements, constraints, and regulations. We are particularly looking
for papers reporting on experimental results of deployed systems,
summaries of challenges or advancements, measurements, and innovative
applications. The primary focus of this session will be on civilian
applications of drones.

CALL FOR PAPERS

================================================
IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Computing
Special Issue on Energy-Efficient Edge Computing
================================================
Submission deadline (EXTENDED): April 15, 2020
The future increase in the amount of data and workloads generated by
Internet
of Things (IoT) devices and connected sensors will lead to the necessity to
move computational nodes from the cloud data centers closer to the data
source,
i.e., at the edge of the cloud, for reduced latency. An edge system is
composed
of any computing and networking resources along the path between data
sources
and cloud data centers. Depending on the specific computing needs, edge
computing devices can use either a wireless or a wired connection to
exchange
messages with the data sources. IoT devices and sensors can then exploit the
hierarchical structure of the edge and cloud system to analyze the collected
data and provide useful information to users in a timely manner. For
example,
wearable sensors could use the computing resources of the user’s smartphone,
laptop, or even smart vehicle to analyze the collected data. Because a large
majority of edge devices are battery operated and have limited connectivity,
the energy efficiency of computation becomes critical. To this end, it is
important to minimize the energy consumption of all the components of an
edge
system, including sensors, IoT devices, edge nodes, and network devices
while
guaranteeing the desired performance. For this special issue we solicit
original experimental, conceptual, and theoretical contributions on the
following topics related to energy-efficient edge computing:
- energy-aware application placement and offloading
- energy-aware resource management
- energy-aware data management
- energy-aware edge2cloud coordination
- energy-aware sensing for edge computing systems
- energy-efficient hardware architectures for edge computing and devices
- energy-efficient edge computing for AI applications
- energy-efficient edge computing applications
- edge computing powered by distributed renewable energy resources
- energy-efficient vehicular edge computing
- energy-efficient edge computing for autonomous robots
- energy-efficient networks for edge computing

Performance evaluation is still a topic that attains a lot of attention in
both distributed and mobile systems as well as Web based services
architectures. Due to the recent advances in internet-based applications as
well as distributed and mobile communication systems, we are witnessing a
variety of new technologies. However, these systems are becoming very large
and complex at the same time. Several challenges remain to be resolved
before these systems become a commodity. Guaranteeing QoS and provisioning
of web-based systems as well as distributed and mobile systems and
evaluating their communication performance represent among the challenging
problem in the design of these systems. Quantitative analysis can be very
difficult and may be intractable because of the state space explosion. New
methods and tools have recently emerged for these kinds of complex systems,
such as Stochastic Automata Networks, Stochastic bounds, PEPA, etc.
This workshop focuses on the performance evaluation of both distributed and
mobile systems, as well as Web based services architectures using both
analytical methods and simulation studies. Authors are encouraged to submit
full papers presenting new research related to QoS and communication
performance evaluation of these systems. Submitted papers must not have

Important announcement regarding Coronavirus/COVID-19
IEEE has been monitoring the developing Coronavirus, COVID-19. The
safety and well-being of all conference participants is our priority.
After studying and evaluating the announcements, guidance, and news
released by relevant national departments, the Organizing Committee of
IEEE SECON 2020, in concert with the Steering Committee and IEEE, has
decided that the conference will run as a virtual conference (i.e.,
using remote audio/video support) and not as an in-person event. Authors
will be required to present their paper remotely, according to IEEE
policies and procedures about publication(s). Attendees will still be
able to enjoy the presentations and interact with the authors remotely.
We will communicate the details of the specific audio/video tools we
will be using, as well as, the scheduling and format of paper
presentations and other conference events.
A registration will still be required for all authors and conference
attendees; we are currently re-defining this aspect. For this reason,
the registration deadline originally communicated to authors of accepted
papers is postponed to a later date. However, the deadline for the
camera-ready version remains the same.
We will soon post further updates about the reconfiguration of other
aspects of the conference.
