CALL FOR PAPERS
IMPORTANT DATES
(Update COVID-19: To provide authors with additional time to prepare
their papers, we are extending the submission deadline for the research
papers by *two* weeks.)
*new* May 27, 2020 - Abstract Submission
*new* June 3, 2020 - Paper Submission
*new* August 10-13, 2020 - Author Response Period
August 28, 2020 - Notification of Acceptance
September 18, 2020 - Camera-ready paper due
December 7-11, 2020 - Conference
(Update COVID-19: The Middleware 2020 conference organization and the
steering committee are closely monitoring the global developments. We
will make a decision around late summer whether the conference can
happen as an in-person meeting in December in Delft or if we need to
organize Middleware 2020 as an online conference.)
The annual ACM/IFIP Middleware conference is a major forum for the
discussion of innovations and recent scientific advances of middleware
systems with a focus on the design, implementation, deployment, and
evaluation of distributed systems, platforms and architectures for
computing, storage, and communication. The conference will include a
high quality single-track technical program, invited speakers, an
industrial track, panel discussions involving academic and industry
leaders, poster and demonstration presentations, a doctoral symposium,
tutorials and workshops.
TOPICS
Original submissions of research papers on a diverse range of topics are
sought, particularly those identifying new research directions. The
topics of the interest for the conference include, but are not limited to:
- Cloud and data centers
- Virtualization, auto-scaling, provisioning, and scheduling
- Data-intensive computing (big data) and data analytics
- Stream processing
- Machine learning
- Mobile and pervasive systems and services
- Internet-of-Things, smart cities
- Fog, Edge computing
- Cyber-physical and Real-time systems
- Energy and power-aware techniques
- Event-based, publish/subscribe, and peer-to-peer solutions
- Networking, network function virtualization, software-defined networking
- Multimedia systems
- Fault tolerance and consistency
- Blockchains
- Security and privacy
- Monitoring, resource management and analysis
- Middleware design principles
- Programming abstractions and paradigms for middleware
- Reconfigurable, adaptable, and reflective approaches
- Reviews of middleware paradigms, e.g., object models, aspect
orientation, etc.
- Methodologies and tools for design, implementation, verification, and
evaluation
Original papers of three types are sought:
*Research Papers*: These papers report original research on the above
topics, and will be evaluated on significance of the problem, novelty of
the solution, advancement beyond prior work, sufficient supporting
evidence and clarity of the presentation.
*Experimentation and Deployment Papers*: These papers describe complete
systems, platforms, and/or comprehensive experimental evaluations of
alternative designs and solutions to well-known problems. The emphasis
during the evaluation of these papers will be less on the novelty and
more on the demonstrated usefulness and potential impact of the
contributions, the extensive experimentation involved, and the quality
and weight of the lessons learned.
*Big Ideas Papers*: These are papers that have the potential for opening
up new research directions. For such papers, the potential to motivate
new research is more important than full experimental evaluation, though
some preliminary evidence of the effectiveness of the approach or idea
is important.

Applications (IndustrialIoT 2020)*
*Gandia-Valencia, Spain. September 28-30, 2020.*

*IndustrialIoT 2020*
In recent years, the widespread deployment of wireless sensor networks,
industrial cloud, industrial robot, embedded computing and inexpensive
sensors has facilitated industrial Internet of Things (IndustrialIoT)
technologies and fostered some emerging applications (e.g., product
lifecycle management). IndustrialIoT is the direct motivation and drive
for the industrial upgrading (e.g., implementing smart factory of
Industrie 4.0). With the support of all kinds of emerging technologies,
IndustrialIoT is capable of continuously capturing information from
various sensors and intelligent units, securely forwarding all the data
to industrial cloud centers, and seamlessly adjusting some important
parameters via a closed loop system. Also, IndustrialIoT can effectively
detect failures and trigger maintenance processes, autonomously reacting
to unexpected changes in production. However, we are still facing some
challenges, for example, it is very difficult to capture, semantically
analyze and employ data in a coherent manner from heterogeneous,
sensor-enabled devices (e.g., industrial equipment, assembly lines, and
transport trucks) owing to the lack of measurement tools, collection
protocols, standardized APIs and security guidelines. The aim of the
conference is to stimulate interaction and convergent among researchers
active in the areas of control, communications, industrial robot,
industrial cloud, smart sensors and actuators, informatics, mobile
computing, and security. All topics are in the context of the IndustrialIoT.

Call for Papers
IEEE LANMAN has an established tradition as a forum for presenting and
discussing the latest technical advances in local and metropolitan area
networking. Cutting-edge papers spanning both theory and experimentation
are solicited in all areas of networking. Papers are solicited in all
areas of networking, but in keeping with the heritage of this event,
this symposium’s central theme is “Ultra-broadband wireless networks: 5G
and beyond”.
Ultra-broadband wireless networks, that can utilize emerging
communication technologies such as mmWave and THz communications, offer
a tremendous opportunity for unprecedented data rates and low latency at
the physical layer over short distances and network layer goodputs that
are orders of magnitude greater than current wireless networks. At the
same time, they raise numerous challenges – such as positioning,
localization, intermittency – that impact networking, communication, and
hardware design, often requiring cross-layer approaches to solve them.
The intimate single-track format of the symposium encourages stimulating
exchanges between researchers. The event is expected to be a forum for
discussion of new and interdisciplinary ideas on network access
protocols, network management and control, services and applications,
performance related to IoT for smart cities. Speculative and potentially
transformative ideas are particularly encouraged, as are studies
reporting measurements from real-life networks and testbeds. Papers are
solicited on any topic in networking, including, but not limited to, the
following:
• Cross-layer design for mmWave and THz communication
• Networking challenges with directional and LoS technologies
• Networking protocols and architectures for the IoTs
• Machine-to-machine communications
• Cloud, edge and fog computing integration
• Co-existence and heterogeneity support at the edge (HetNets)
• Energy efficiency for local and metropolitan area networking
• Information security for local and metropolitan area networking
• Intelligent routing and forwarding
• Named data networking
• Network and transport mechanisms for latency reduction
• Network virtualization in local and metropolitan area
• Packet scheduling
• Performance for local and metropolitan area networking
• Resilience and reliability for local and metropolitan area networking
• Software-defined networking in local and metropolitan area

Scope and Motivation
Ad hoc networks are highly adaptive and self-organizing networks that do
not rely on pre-existing communication infrastructure. Sensor and
actuator networks consist of multiple devices that are usually sparsely
distributed and need to operate in an autonomic and energy-efficient
manner. These networks have been the focus of interest of both academia
and industry during the past few years, given their large application
scope both in the military and civilian fields, ranging from
environmental monitoring, body area networks for healthcare, to
vehicular networks for road safety, and support for communications in
the battle field. This interest is ever increasing now, with the gamut

Call for Papers
As cars become increasingly automated and connected, it is anticipated
travelling will be safer and more efficient. However, the natural
segregation of the two vehicle technology areas has been dragging our pace
towards that goal. Vehicular communications, or V2X, which enable vehicles
to exchange information in real time with each other and with other road
participants in a range of a few hundreds of meters, offers opportunities
to augment individual vehicles’ understanding of the environment and to
cooperate with the traffic in a more cohesive manner. But its protocol
design has largely been independent of actual automated/autonomous driving
applications. On the other hand, vehicle automation, a domain used to
leverage a vehicle’s own sensor suit to sense and operate, hasn’t gotten
many algorithms to handle over the air input of different granularities
regarding the environment. Novel cooperative automated driving applications
leveraging V2X data are needed.
This dedicated workshop concerns the most recent advancements in wireless
communications, sensory technologies and information processing. It aims to
advance solutions combining the power of wireless communications and
traditional vehicle automation for a safer, more efficient
automated/autonomous vehicle. Challenges, opportunities and benefits of
performing research in this interdisciplinary domain will be analyzed and
highlighted.
The workshop will invite distinguished speakers. It is expected to be
interactive. The technical areas of the workshop include, but not limited to
1) V2X communication protocol design, testing and evaluation
2) V2X assisted/enhanced applications
3) Vehicular cooperative sensory fusion
4) Cooperative automated driving, path planning and control
5) Network-augmented ADAS
*Paper Submission Guidelines*
Original papers are solicited. Papers must have not been published nor be
submitted for publication elsewhere. The workshop Technical Program
Committee will review all papers and make selection based on the quality of
the submission and its relevance to the workshop scope. Workshop papers
will be subject to the same formatting and length requirements as papers
for the regular technical sessions of VTC 2020-Fall (5-page limit for paper
submissions, plus a maximum of 2 additional pages for $100 per page for the
final version).
Sincerely,
