SCOPE AND OVERVIEW
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The evolving information and communications (ICT) technologies present a unique
opportunity to effect the transformation needed to move us towards the goal of
sustainability by helping to reduce our carbon footprint, mitigate and adapt ill effects
of climate change, reduce and repair environmental damage, provide effective disaster
response and recovery, creatively manage overstressed infrastructures in crowded
urban systems, and enhance use of planet friendly materials and technologies. ICT
is already being integrated into many areas of our lives, such as smart management
of city services, transportation, energy distribution and management, health care, etc.,
and this integration is expected to expand deeper and wider in the coming years and
decades. Unfortunately, this ICT proliferation brings in its own challenges of increased
carbon footprint, accelerating obsolescence of electronic equipment and its disposal
issues, increased use of precious natural resources such as water and materials, etc.
These twin problems of reducing the environmental impact of ICT and exploiting ICT
for a more sustainable world form the underlying theme for SustainIT since its
inception in 2010.
This edition of SustainIT continues this theme by focusing on inter-disciplinary
scientific challenges of enhancing the sustainability of ICT and via ICT. The goal
of this conference is to bring together people from different research areas, and
provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among
researchers, professionals, and application developers from both industry and academia.
Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of sustainability
of ICT (including smart energy management) and innovative use of ICT to enhance
human and societal sustainability are solicited.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
1) Sustainable communication substrates:
- Energy-efficient networking technologies and architectures
- Energy-efficient wired and wireless communications protocols
- Cross-layer optimizations for sustainable networking
- Novel standards and metrics for green communications
2) Energy-efficient operation of computing infrastructure:
- Energy-efficient management of computing, storage, and network resources
- Managing carbon footprint of data centers and increasing its energy efficiency
- Trade-offs between energy efficiency, Quality of Service, and reliability
- Adaptation of computing and communications infrastructure to variable renewable
energy supply
- Emerging computing/storage technologies for energy efficient operation
3) Achieving sustainability through the application of ICT:
- Application of ICT to increase the energy efficiency of smart homes, smart
buildings, and smart cities
- ICT for sustainable mobility, transport, and logistics
- ICT for energy-efficient industrial environments and processes

IEEE Internet of Things Journal, Special Issue on Cloud Computing for IoT
*** Submission Deadline Extended to: December 8th 2014 ***
CALL FOR PAPERS
====================================================
Over recent past years there has been a growing interest in the ability
of embedded devices, sensors, actuators to communicate and create a
ubiquitous cyber-physical world. The growth of the notion of the
Internet of Things (IoT) and the rapid development of technologies such
as short range mobile communication and improved energy-efficiency is
expected to create a pervasive connection of "things". This will
inevitably result in the generation of enormous amount of data, which
have to be stored, processed and accessed. Cloud computing has long been
recognized as a paradigm for big data storage and analytics. The
combination of cloud computing and IoT can enable ubiquitous sensing
services and powerful processing of sensing data streams beyond the
capability of individual "things", thus stimulating innovations in both
fields. For example, cloud platforms allow the sensing data to be stored
and used intelligently for smart monitoring and actuation with the smart
devices. Novel data fusion algorithms, machine learning methods, and
artificial intelligence techniques can be implemented and run
centralized or distributed on the cloud to achieve automated decision
making. These will boost the development of new applications such as
smart cities, grids, and transportation systems. New challenges however
arise when IoT meets cloud -- there is an urgent need for novel network
architectures that seamlessly integrate them, and protocols that
facilitate big data streaming from IoT to the cloud. QoS and QoE, as
well as data security, privacy, and reliability, are critical concerns
during the integration.
This special issue solicits high-quality original research papers which
focuses on the integration of cloud computing and IoT. We encourage
submissions on theoretical, practical, as well as experimental studies,
from both academia and industry, related to all aspects of Cloud
Computing for IoT. High-quality survey papers that review the cutting
edge research in this field would also be considered. Topics of
interests include (but are not limited to) the following categories:
- Network architecture for cloud and IoT integration
- IoT and cloud data management
- Cloud computing for large-scale sensor data stream processing
- Cloud-assisted machine to machine communication
- Innovative applications of cloud-based sensing architecture, e.g.,
smart cities, smart grids, transportation
- Protocol design and modification for cloud and IoT integration (e.g.,
CoAP, IPv6)
- Data security, privacy and reliability for cloud and IoT integration
- Cloud-assisted IoT mobility management and QoE/QoS enhancement
- Cloud-assisted ubiquitous sensing services and applications

CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Communications Magazine
Feature Topic on Internet of Things/M2M from Research to Standards:
The Next Steps
(http://www.comsoc.org/files/Publications/Magazines/ci/cfp/cfpcommag0815.html)
Manuscript submission: January 15, 2015
=====================================================================
IEEE Communications Magazine
Feature Topic on Internet of Things/M2M from Research to Standards: The
Next Steps
(http://www.comsoc.org/files/Publications/Magazines/ci/cfp/cfpcommag0815.html)
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a framework in which all things have a
representation and a presence in the Internet. More specifically, the
Internet of Things aims at offering new applications and services
bridging the physical and virtual worlds, in which Machine-to-Machine
(M2M) communications represents the baseline communication that enables
the interactions between Things and applications in the cloud.
The Internet of Things allows for the pervasive interaction with/between
smart things leading to an effective integration of information into the
digital world. These smart (mobile) things - which are instrumented with
sensing, actuation, and interaction capabilities - have the means to
exchange information and influence real-world entities and other actors
of such a digital world eco-system in real time, forming a smart
pervasive computing environment. The objective is to achieve global
access to the services and information through the so-called Web of
Things, as well as efficient support for global communications.
The first generation of IoT/M2M standards (from IEEE, IETF, 3GPP, IETF,
oneM2M, etc.) is sufficiently mature to enable large-scale operational
deployments. Connectivity, vertical data models, RESTful APIs and device
lifecycle management are concrete examples of these foundation standards
representing the basis of current deployments such as eHealth,
automotive, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), and smart cities.
As the IoT deployment pace accelerates, a next generation of standards
is needed to realize the full IoT/M2M vision. This feature topic seeks
both mature and early research on candidate standards that will transfer
to standards organizations such as oneM2M, IETF, 3GPP, IEEE, HGI, BBF, etc.
Submitted papers in this feature topic are expected to focus on
state-of-the-art research in various aspects of IoT/M2M from academics
and industry viewpoints. The aim of this special issue is thus to offer
a venue where researchers from both academia and industry can publish
premier articles on the recent advances in theory, application and
implementation of IoT/M2M standards concepts.
Topics of interests include, but are not limited to, the following areas
of standards research:
* Lightweight protocols and structured data such as Efficient XML
Interchange (EXI) and JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) for the IoT
* Interworking with other technologies and systems such as Network
Functions Virtualization (NFV) and cloud computing
* Advanced indexing, naming, and addressing of the IoT
* Optimization and enhancement of the currently standardized IoT
architectures
* Novel concepts for sensors and actuators such as crowd-sourcing
* Abstraction and Semantics technologies for devices and services
* Experiences and field trials of IoT applications: Smart cities, digital
* IoT/M2M Management: Device management evolutions, Autonomous
management, Conflict management, service harmonization
* Next generation of open platforms and hardware for the IoT
* Security, Trust, Privacy and Identity in the IoT
Manuscript Submission
Articles should be tutorial in nature and written in a style
comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of the article.
References should be limited to 10, figures and tables to a combined
total of 6, and mathematical equations should be avoided. Paper length
should not exceed 4,500 words. Complete guidelines can be found
at http://www.comsoc.org/commag/paper-submission-guidelines. All
articles must be submitted through the IEEE Manuscript Central web site
(at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/commag-ieee) by the submission
deadline. Submit articles to the category “August 2015/IoT M2M Standards
Research”
Submission Schedule
* Manuscript Submission: 15-January-2015
* Notification of acceptance: 01-April-2015
* Final Manuscript Due: 01-June-2015
* Publication: August 2015

CALL FOR PAPER
----------------
IEEE International Workshop on Service-Oriented Computing in Disconnected, Intermittent and Limited (DIL) Networks (SOC-DIL)
collocated with 2015 IEEE 81st Vehicular Technology Conference: VTC2015-Spring
Technically Sponsored by IEEE and NATO IST-118 Working Group - SOA Recommendations for
Disadvantaged Grids in the Tactical Domain
11-14 May 2015, Glasgow, Scotland
Service-oriented computing (SOC) has emerged in recent years as a promising
approach to facilitating the interoperability of various, generally heterogeneous
networking systems. After successful deployment in the Internet and broadband networks,
the latest trend is to introduce SOC into Disconnected, Intermittent and Limited (DIL)
wireless/mobile networking environments, which are typical scenarios for rural
area net-works, vehicular networks, battlefield networks and other resource-constrained
or disadvantaged networks. Efficient and effective interoperability in these networks
is highly demanded for various mission-critical ap-plication scenarios such as disaster
relief in ravaged regions, search and rescue in remote areas and military/tactical operations
in hostile environments. The workshop is therefore primarily concerned with
latest re-search advances in improving the performance of SOC-based services and
applications in DIL networks. We welcome papers concerned with all aspects of
innovative design, implementation, deployment, evaluation and recommendation of SOC-based
systems in DIL environments. In particular, the workshop solicits papers addressing the
following topics:
- Architecture, design, implementation and evaluation of SOC-based systems for DIL environments
- Case studies involving DIL environments utilising SOC in various stages of development or use cases
- Analysis, modelling and characterisation of DIL networks, and their impact on SOC-based services
- SOC service composition, deployment, discovery and life cycle management in DIL environments such
as vehicular networks, disaster relief, military tactical networks, emergency management
- Adaptive, collaborative, location-aware, mission-critical and other smart applications in DIL environ-ments
- Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) in DIL environments
- Quality of Information (QoI) and Value of Information (VoI) in DIL environments
- Security, mobility, network virtualisation, connectivity/routing, energy and medium access control
solutions in DIL environments to enable improved SOC
- Cross-layer optimisations in DIL environments for enhanced SOC performance
- Emulation or simulation tools, and test beds for evaluating SOC interoperability in DIL environments
- Standardisation and recommendations

CALL FOR PAPERS
The key components of many pervasive systems and applications are already
deployed in the form of ubiquitous commercial products carried by humans.
Human mobility makes it possible for such key components to interact,
promoting cooperation and sharing of content, services and resources.
Smartphones, tablet PCs, and other personal devices act as mobile computing
elements able to gather information about the surrounding environment
according to the mobility of users. In other situations these devices
operate as mobile nodes of the computing and/or networking infrastructure,
where interaction and communication occur opportunistically.
The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the
achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive
applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role
in achieving the end goals.
Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of
human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing
prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems
are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues
is also encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human
mobility
- mobile phone sensing applications and systems
- opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between
- opportunistic computing
- pervasive systems with humans in the loop
- wearable sensing systems
- mobility models
- distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility
- impact of human mobility on wireless communication
- green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility
- mobility aware protocols
- opportunistic networking
- pervasive social networking
PUBLICATION AND INDEXING
Papers are published in the combined proceedings of the IEEE PerCom
Workshops and will appear on IEEExplore.
According to Google’s metrics, the combined proceedings (main conference +
workshops) are characterised by high values of h5 index and h5-median index,
respectively equal to 32 and 45. This makes the IEEE PerCom Workshops one of
the publication venues with higher visibility and impact in the area of
pervasive computing.
In the last years, the IEEE PerCom Workshops proceedings have always been
indexed by Scopus. Besides appearing within the database, a paper that
is published in the IEEE PerCom Workshops is both a “source” and a
“destination” for the Scopus citation managing system (and thus it
contributes to the author’s h-index and citation count, as computed
by Scopus).
PAPER SUBMISSION
Papers should contain original material and should not be previously
published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts
are limited to a maximum of 6 pages in IEEE conference format. At least
one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop
to present the paper. There is no workshop-only registration. An oral
presentation at the workshop is strictly required. Failure to present
the paper at the workshop will result in the withdrawal of the paper
from the proceedings as well as from IEEE Xplore. Paper submission will
be via EDAS (further details will be available on the workshop website).
