Mobile Computing and Vehicle Communications Symposium, ICNC 2013
San Diego, Jan. 28-31, 2013
http://www.conf-icnc.org/2013
Advances in 3G, WiFi, and WiMax technologies have made mobile gadgets an
increasingly popular means of Internet access. Deployment of 4G
networks and releases of new smart phones and tablets will undoubtedly
raise the demand for better signal coverage, faster transmission, and
seamless adaptation. One emerging research direction is wireless access
virtualization, in which a group of access points collaboratively
provide the illusion of a single wide-coverage access point to simplify
connection management on the client side. While enjoying the benefits of
accessing information at any time from anywhere, data transmitted over
the wireless medium are more susceptible to eavesdropping and packet
sniffing. This raises the concerns for data authentication and privacy
issues. These technical challenges are aggravated by the proliferation
of various cloud services, social networking platforms, and smart
connected vehicles.
This symposium is devoted to covering original contributions in the
design, development, and analysis of novel architectures, platforms,
protocols, and applications in mobile computing and vehicle
communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
● Novel applications, and services for mobile computing and vehicle
communications
● Architectures, platforms, and test beds of mobile computing and
vehicle communications
● Performance characterization of mobile computing platforms
● User interfaces and systems design for mobile applications
● Mobile and/or vehicle ad hoc networks and sensor networks
● Wireless channel and media access control protocols
● Wireless access virtualization
● Resource management for heterogeneous access networks
● Service integration and inter-networking
● Practical solutions for security and privacy issues
● Analysis and solutions addressing scalability and reliability issues
● Novel mobility schemes and analysis of existing solutions
● Implementation of mobile IP and migration of IPv6
● Cloud-assisted mobile computing and vehicle communications
● Quality of service for mobile or in-vehicle media and interactive
applications
● Vehicular networking and communications for intelligent
transportation system

Due to multiple requests, the WiSARN 2012 Fall submission deadline is
extended to 22 June, 2012.
Call for Papers
The 6th International Workshop on
Wireless Sensor, Actuator and Robot Networks (WiSARN 2012-Fall)
http://cs.purduecal.edu/~yang246/WiSARN2012Fall/
To be held in conjunction with
The 9th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad hoc and Sensor
Systems (MASS'12)
October 8-11, 2012, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSANs) are the confluence point
where the traditional fields of wireless sensor networks (WSNs),
robot networks and control theory meet. In WSAN, nodes collaborate
to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by
the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and
applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may
deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes
and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network
topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption,
and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner.
The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field,
WSANs are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully
exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring
together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification
and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for
current and future applications of WSAN. Original, unpublished
contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSANs, WSNs, robot

IoTech - International Workshop on
Internet of Things Technology and Architectures
Workshop date: October 11, 2012
(Co-located with [1]IEEE MASS 2012, Las Vegas, Nevada, US)
IoTech site: [2]http://iotech-ws.com
*******************************************************************
In recent years, wireless sensors and mobile technologies have
experienced a tremendous upsurge. Advances in hardware design and
micro-fabrication have made it possible to potentially embed sensing
and communication devices in every object, from banknotes to bicycles,
leading to the vision of the Internet of Things (IoT). It is expected
that physical objects in the near future will create an unprecedented
network of interconnected physical things able to communicate
information about themselves and/or their surroundings and also
capable of interacting with the physical environment where they
operate.
Key peculiarities of IoT are the extremely large number of devices and
their capability of seamlessly communicating via the Internet
Protocol, which is expected to make IoT technology pervasive. IoTech
will tackle technical issues related to fundamental as well as applied
research on Internet of Things. Our intention is being inclusive,
gathering practitioners, implementors and researchers with differing
backgrounds and expertise to foster technical discussion and
collaborations among IoT technology. For this second edition we would
like to emphasize two aspects: 1) on the one side, the ability to
scavenge energy to facilitate a sustainable IoT; and 2) on the other
side, the coexistence of different technologies in the IoT, e.g.,
(low-power) WiFi, IEEE 802.15.4 (and its many variants), LTE
Femtocells as gateway access points, mixed wired and wireless network
setups.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
* Energy efficient device architectures: emphasis will be given on
novel hardware designs, especially exploiting or integrating
systems for energy harvesting.
* Energy driven network design: emphasis will be given to papers
dealing with self-sufficient devices with energy harvesting
capabilities.
* Reference and concrete communication architectures for IoTs:
emphasis will be given on the capability of scaling up to a large
number of communicating devices.
* Communication protocol suites for energy constrained devices:
theoretical investigation, design, implementation and experimental
validation.
* Optimization and improvement of standard protocols for specific
application domains, e.g., smart energy metering, for their usage
within IoT domains.
* Lightweight signal processing techniques for smart objects, e.g.,
distributed Source Coding, Compressive Sensing, Lossless and lossy
compression, etc.
IMPORTANT DATES
Submission of research papers due: August 15, 2012

===================================================================
IEEE Network Special Issue on
"Video over Mobile Networks"
Background
Video is a major challenge for the future mobile Internet as it is
foreseen to account for close to 64% of consumer mobile traffic by 2013.
Already today, mobile network operators are suffering from the exploding
number of subscribers accessing high-volume mobile data services, and
this trend is expected to intensify even further in the near future. The
enormous proliferation of multimedia-capable portable devices -- such as
smart phones, tablets and laptops equipped with 3G and WLAN interfaces
-- has increased the volume and variety of multimedia digital content
and related services.
A large portion of portable devices benefit today from cellular flat
rates, offered by mobile operators as a response to the increasing
usersâ demand for ubiquitous and seamless access to content. This demand
is mainly caused by the exponential growth of the popularity of
multimedia web based services, such as YouTube, Flickr and Facebook,
which has ultimately created a large pool of mobile multimedia
âconsumersâ. Moreover, user portable devices are typically equipped with
integrated cameras, enabling people to create multimedia content in a
simple way, and thus dramatically enlarging the population of multimedia
"producers" as well.
Current network infrastructures are not prepared to deal with this
traffic increase. The mobile Internet was not designed with video
requirements in mind and, as a consequence, its architecture is not
tailored to efficiently handle a large volume of video traffic.
Scope and Contributions
The goal of this special issue is to share research efforts on the
design, adaptation and enhancement of IP-based mobile network
architectures aimed at providing efficient video traffic support. Topics
of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Improvements to cellular network architectures (at core and/or
access level) for better mobile video support.
* Integration of heterogeneous radio technologies for mobile video
transport.
* Mobile content distribution networks.
* Mobile P2P video transport.
* Cross-layer optimizations for video traffic.
* New mobility management paradigms adapted for video traffic (e.g.,
management of users mobility, handoff process enhancements,
app-level mobility, distributed mobility schemes, multicast
mobility, etc.).
* Layer 2 specific video optimizations (e.g., 802.11aa, video
specific scheduling for LTE, etc.).
* Video-related standardization efforts in the relevant
standardization bodies (IEEE, IETF and 3GPP).
* QoS policies for video traffic.
* Testbed, experiments, and real-world deployments focusing on video
over mobile networks.

Description of workshop
Opportunistic networks are an emerging networking paradigm where
communication between the source and destination occurs on-the-fly and
depends on the availability of communication links. Opportunistic
communication paradigm heavily benefits from the heterogeneous
networking and communication infrastructure that currently exist, e.g.,
mobile networks, P2P networks, with the supporting technologies in data
management and system interoperability.
Motivated by further examining recent advances in this field and
promoting the optimization of the existing methodologies and/or
approaches, as well as presenting efficient high performance techniques
for extending the survivability of such systems, both in terms of
performance and reliability, we are interested in organizing this
workshop with the following primary objectives:
§ Explore new and innovative ideas and improvements of opportunistic
networks that can affect the overall performance of the system;
§ Explore the impact of wireless mobility and resource management in
order to offer high performance and resource availability in today’s
computing systems.
The workshop also aims at presenting state-of-the-art research and
future trends in mobile and heterogeneous opportunistic networking and
applications, combining the mobile communication, mobility and resource
management field, and in a research pathway in order to present the
various concepts that contribute to enable high performance computing.
