Call for Contributions
----------------------
NEC Laboratories Europe and the Institute of Communication Networks
and Computer Engineering (IKR) of the University of Stuttgart invite
you to a one-day workshop on the topic
Capacity Sharing
----------------
With the increasing amount of IP traffic in fixed and mobile access
networks, the question how to share the available resources in a fair,
efficient and demand-oriented way becomes more and more
prevalent. With the variety of services one can find in today's
Internet, the requirements in rate, data volume and latency differ
strongly. To maximize resource utilization and, at the same time,
provide satisfying performance to all users, application layer
knowledge is needed. As different resource allocation and adaptation
mechanisms already exist in MAC, transport and application layer, an
integral consideration of the problem space is required.
In wireless networks, the problem is particularly relevant due to the
inherently limited resources, which render a simple "throwing
bandwidth at the problem" solution impossible. Because large
over-provisioning factors are economically unfeasibly, similar
questions on capacity sharing also arise in fixed access networks,
such as high bandwidth passive optical networks or cable networks.
The objective of this workshop is to bring together stakeholders of
mobile and fixed access networks, the classic Internet world and of
the application and transport community. We solicit presentations on
the state-of-the-art, results of ongoing research, open issues, trends
and new ideas. We are especially looking forward to (possibly
provocative) visionary presentations to foster a lively discussion
about how to face the upcoming challenges in the future mobile
Internet. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited
to
* Application-layer adaption for mobile services
* Transport layer solutions and possible interactions with
cellular/fixed access networks
* Context-aware resource allocation & cross-layer adaptation
* QoE and fairness definitions, metrics and evaluation
* Data traffic characteristics in fixed and mobile Internet
* Economic aspects on capacity sharing and business models
* Similarities and differences of capacity sharing in mobile and fixed
access networks
* Related standardization activities and projects

The development of intelligent transport systems (ITS) brings the
promise of improved road safety and comfortable/infotainment driving
environments. Recent advances of wireless vehicular communications
supporting vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure
(V2I) communications have become a cornerstone of ITS. Wireless
vehicular communications for ITS is one of the most interesting and
active research topics, which is requiring vital efforts from both the
industry and the academic. In particular, studies on network routing
and communication algorithm for V2V and V2I have posed various
challenges. Most of the current works on V2V and V2I communications
mainly focus on non-IP data communications. These challenges require
developing new network routing protocols and design communication
algorithms, especially for IP data communications. This special issue
is intended to bring together the industry and academic working on
different aspects related to ITS and to highlight the state-of-art
research on ITS. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* IP mobility protocol issues for ITS
* Alert, safety, and infotainment communication algorithm issues for ITS
* Bandwidth allocation and resource scheduler issues for ITS
* Addressing, routing, and data transmission issues for ITS
* Security and access control management issues for ITS
* Practical standard development issues for ITS
* Case studies of ITS applications
Before submission authors should carefully read over the journal's
Author Guidelines, which are located at
http://jwcn.eurasipjournals.com/authors/instructions. Prospective
authors should submit an electronic copy of their complete manuscript
through the journal on-line submission system at

*Special Issue on “Communications in Ubiquitous Healthcare: Wireless
Sensors, Networked Devices, Protocols and Solutions”____*
Many countries continue to face the major challenge of economically
supporting their welfare systems, particularly medical/health benefits.
Without the introduction of alternative solutions to reduce the cost of
conventional systems such as hospitalization and specialized
institutions, the system will most likely collapse. For a long time,
information and communications technologies (ICT) have been recognized
as part of the solution to create new cost-effective solutions to reduce
the cost of healthcare. For example, the Ubiquitous (U) Health Smart
Home, a home equipped with ICT to support people directly in their home,
has been identified by governments and medical institutions, as an
important step towards financial savings, as well as a technologically
and socially acceptable solution to maintain the current health welfare
system. ____
The aim of the Ubiquitous Health smart home is to allow elderly and
disabled persons to continue to live a more independent life as long as
possible in their own home while receiving the required medical and
safety assistance. Doctors and other Healthcare providers can
continuously access their health status or situation to detect as early
as possible through a flexible remote access any anomaly so they can
immediately intervene. With the help of the U-Health smart home,
doctors, nurses and other health-related personnel do not need being
physically close to the patients and reversely reducing therefore the
load on hospitals and specialized institutions while ensuring the safety
of the patients.____
While this concept had some difficulties to be fully realized, in recent
years, tremendous advances in low-power electronics, nano/bio sensor
technologies along with development of wired and wireless network
technologies are facilitating the development of such solutions which
are more and more requested by our societies. These advances have led to
the development of small-sized wireless medical and environmental
sensors that are capable of very efficiently monitoring physiological
parameters of humans as well at the living environment. Further,
advances in sensing and communication technologies, along with advances
software engineering, make it possible today to build homes where
healthcare providers could deploy novel health and safety applications.
These solutions not only will improve the well-being and quality of
health of people in their own home but could also benefit other places
where the same technologies can be deployed such as smart spaces and
smart hospitals.____
This special issue aims to gather the latest results in this area of
Ubiquitous Healthcare Smarthome, by providing a fresh snapshot of the
current state-of-the-art in the design, implementation and evaluation of
supporting design, hardware, software, algorithms, protocols and
applications. Practical experiences, extensive experimentation, and
lessons learned from deployment of real prototype systems, along with
field trials, are welcome. In addition, original disruptive proposals
and groundbreaking ideas appropriately written for the large readership
of this magazine are highly encouraged. In summary, we are soliciting
high-quality papers reporting original research results and practical
experiences of system design, prototyping and deployment.____

IEEE GLOBECOM 2011 Workshop
International Workshop on Machine-to-Machine Communications
'Key' to the Future Internet of Things
In Conjunction with IEEE GLOBECOM 2011, 5-9 December 2011, Houston,
Texas, USA
(Workshop homepage http://iwm2m.cttc.es)
**** Paper Submission Deadline: 7 July 2011 *****
The number of networked machines and/or devices is continuously
increasing, changing the conventional perception of communication
towards networks that are independent from human interaction. This
results in a new paradigm on Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications
towards the Future Internet of Things (IoT). M2M communications offer a
potential solution to the already saturated telecommunications market,
with new services and applications, such as smart city, smart grid,
intelligent transportation, e-healthcare, remote monitoring, and
logistics. Such services and applications open a mass market and
several business opportunities, whilst transforming the way
communication systems are defined and operate. This requires development
of novel solutions to efficiently serve a huge number of devices that
interact autonomously at a global level. It also opens a wide research
area for future M2M communications, including investigations on
scalability, wide-area coverage, energy-efficiency, spectral-efficiency,
cost-efficiency, heterogeneity, cooperation, and security.
Main Topics of Interest
This workshop aims to gather researchers, engineers and practitioners
both from academia and industry (universities, research centers, network
operators, regulatory bodies, service providers), as well as end users,
to present and debate advanced M2M communication systems, technologies,
and applications, with the perspective of current M2M-related
standardization activities in 3GPP, ETSI, IEEE, and IETF. Specifically,
but not exclusively, the workshop proposes to address the following
topics related to M2M communication:
- Scalable system architecture and components
- Radio access technologies and protocols
- Spectrum management for M2M
- Resource management for energy-harvesting devices
- Channel and traffic models
- Internetworking protocols and mechanisms
- Cloud support for M2M applications
- Device management for M2M
- Data and service management for M2M
- Semantic technologies for M2M
- Mobility management for M2M
- Security, trust and privacy of M2M devices and services

Special Session on Information Dissemination in Vehicular Networks
IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference 2012
Jan 14 - 17, 2012 * Las Vegas, NV, USA
www.ieee-ccnc.org/2012
============================================================================
This session will focus on state-of-the-art technologies for information
dissemination in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and
vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) networks. There is growing interest in
using V2V or V2I communications to enable ITS (Intelligent
Transport System) services which can range from time-critical safety
services, traffic management, to infotainment and local
advertising services. How to effectively and efficiently disseminate
information in a timely and reliable manner is critical to ITS
services. However, the unique characteristics of vehicle networks
present challenges in achieving service performance. Applicable
information dissemination technologies may include delay tolerant
approaches, data aggregation methods and routing schemes to
mitigate congestion on the wireless medium, maintain network
connectivity and improve overall communication performance. The
impact and significance of such technologies for varying degrees of V2V
and V2I connectivity and for varying deployment scenarios
are also critical. This session seeks to provide a forum to present and
discuss original relevant research results.
Authors are invited to submit regular technical papers or position
papers. The position papers should present novel technologies at an
early stage of development or share future vision. All the submissions
should describe original, previously unpublished research, not
currently under review by another conference or journal. Please submit
the paper through EDAS.
Submissions deadline: Aug 15, 2011
Submissions for the Special Sessions are subject to the same rules,
guidelines and peer review as all other papers.

Houston, TX, USA, December, 2011,
held in conjunction with IEEE GLOBECOM 2011,
and co-sponsored by the German Chapter of the IEEE CE Society,
G-Lab, and The unbelievable Machine Company
Group communications have passed from research to deployment and back to
a research issue. Newly deployed services, in particular IPTV, P2P
content distribution, and collaborative applications, are stimulating
current research on multicast, broadcast, concast, and anycast. Emerging
design issues for a future multi-service Internet combined with the
dynamic development of wireless access techonologies challenge the
community to rethink the position of group communications along the
stack.
The PerGroup workshop invites the community to share efforts in search
of seamless, pervasive group services, and to discuss directions on a
human-centric multi-service Inter-networking architecture. We welcome
contributions that design new solutions or analyze existing deployments,
but also those that present striking problem statements or early
conceptual work.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
System Design & Methodology:
- Architectures and protocols for fixed, wireless and ad hoc networks
- Protocols and interfaces for intuitive group communications
- Intra- and Inter-domain group communication
- Native, overlay (including P2P) and hybrid multicast
- Topology analysis & measuring, mining and modeling of
- media-rich social networks
- Measurement, simulation and analytical studies as well as deployment
experiences
Supporting Technologies:
- Multipath routing / extension of emerging routing schemes
- Cooperative relaying and network coding
- Service placement and service location
- Security and privacy issues for multicast, anycast, and broadcast
- Real-time and QoS aspects
Applications:
- Adaptive content distribution, e.g., video broadcasting
- Application-layer traffic optimization and provider interaction
- Multicast & anycast in a future multi-service Internet
- New data distribution models to facilitate group communication
- Frameworks for human centric based group communications
