CALL FOR PAPERS
For the reliable performance evaluation of protocols, systems and
algorithms in
ad hoc, sensor, and mesh networks, realistic models and credible simulation
scenarios are crucial. It has been shown that simplistic models for
mobility,
traffic, and/or signal propagation yield results that are not accurate. To
increase the credibility of our models, traces from specific scenarios
need to
be acquired and used in the development and validation of realistic
scenario models.
This special issue intends to disseminate the latest research results in
this
important research area, by providing an overview of the current
state-of-the-art scenario models and methodologies for model validation and
credible performance evaluation for ad hoc networks. To this purpose, we are
seeking high-quality papers reporting original research results.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
includes but is not limited to:
* Classification of scenarios
* Challenges in trace acquisition
* Tools for mobility, traffic and propagation modeling
* Methods in localization and tracking to acquire accurate movement
traces
* Movement trace measurement architectures
* Characterization of movement traces
* Mobility modeling
* Validation of mobility models
* Traffic measurement, traffic characterization, traffic modeling
* Combined mobility and traffic modeling
* Characterization of signal propagation
* Propagation modeling
* Impact of mobility on radio characterization
* Impact of scenario modeling on performance
IMPORTANT DATES:
Paper submission deadline: Aug. 15th, 2011
Notification of acceptance: Nov. 30th, 2011
Camera-ready paper due: Jan. 31st, 2012
SUBMISSION FORMAT AND GUIDELINE:
All submitted papers must be clearly written in excellent English and
contain
only original work, which has not been published by or is currently
under review
for any other journal or conference. Papers must not exceed 25 pages
(one-column, at least 11pt fonts) including figures, tables, and references.
A detailed submission guideline is available as "Guide to Authors" at
www.elsevier.com/locate/adhoc.
All manuscripts and any supplementary material should be submitted through
Elsevier Editorial System (EES). The authors must select as "SI –
SCENES" when
they reach the "Article Type" step in the submission process.
The EES website is located at: http://ees.elsevier.com/adhoc/

HeterWMN 2011: IEEE 6th International Workshop on Heterogeneous,
Multi-Hop, Wireless and Mobile Networks
Houston, Texas, United States of America, December 5
To be held in conjunction with IEEE Globecom 2011
Website: http://irit.fr/HeterWMN2011/
Submission deadline: July 7, 2011

SUMMARY
=======
The traditional centralized wireless and mobile networks are mainly
based on single-hop architecture and rely on fixed infrastructure such
as base stations or access points. The proliferation and deployment of
radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, Wireless
PANs, ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks with
distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power,
mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and
ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an integrated
heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular
network depending upon the application needs and the types of radio
access networks (RANs) available. The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless
and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and
greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to
dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and scalable
protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as
wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all
the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to aim at
heterogeneous architectures and services that together provide
seamless integration of single-hop as well as multi-hop mobile ad hoc
networks.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together the research community
in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on
the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous
multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and
previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and
application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile
networks.

The scope of this workshop targets the growing
overlap between both autonomous systems, and the
future generation of network technologies
embedded in Internet of things or cloud computing. Indeed,
autonomous applications embedded in complex
configurations and dynamic environments have
rapidly expanded from classical ones to
applications where different modular devices, actuators and
sensors interact closely. This has impacted
considerably the control of a given system in a centralized
manner Current trends are to propose new
autonomic architecture schemes that manage and control
future networks within the so-called sky of
clouds and Internet of things. Healthcare and wellness
applications such as helping elderly people,
assisting dependent persons, habitat monitoring in a
smart environment constitute some of the
potential scenarios of convergence between robotic
systems and network technologies. These
applications, which are based on high-level commands and
in order to accomplish some specific tasks,
reveal new challenges regarding mechanic design,
portability, acceptability, power support,
control theory, etc. In addition to portability and low-power
systems, which are vital challenges that limit
substantially any successful robotic application, network
paradigms should also take into account issues
related to cost, scalability and security. This workshop
will highlight the overlapping of these two
domains of autonomous systems and network technologies
devoted for different applications. Issues
related to concepts, new technologies, and protocols will
elicit particular attention.
The workshop solicits papers addressing, but are
not limited to, the following topics:
- Autonomous manipulation using service robots
- Smart communications for Cloud Computing and Internet of things
- Architecture and protocol for wireless based sensor networks
- Virtual networks and distributed Agent Platform

- Rehabilitation robotics, exoskeletons, smart
textile clothes and wearable robots applications
- Context-awareness and ubiquitous robotics
- Secure, scalable and low cost network paradigms applications
- Techniques of sensing, actuation and recognition
- Applications of Autonomous Behavior
- Design modeling and control of autonomous robotic systems
- Assistive robotic technology
- Energy optimization of autonomous systems
- Monitoring and security of autonomous systems in intelligent environment
- Context awareness using sensor networks
- Network based transmission architecture for controlling autonomous systems
- Real-time network based structure using
sensors, actuators and transducers, etc.
All submitted papers will be rigorously reviewed
and we will select papers based on their originality,
timeliness, significance, and relevance to the
workshop. All accepted papers must be presented and

_____________________________________________
SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE
As more and more users become increasingly dependent on wireless and
mobile communications, it is necessary to secure a reliable and
dependable technology support for "on-demand" services through any of
the wireless architectures that have been in development recently,
such as mesh networks, WiMax, WiFi, ad hoc networks, sensor networks,
vehicular networks, machine-2-machine networks, etc.
However, there are serious challenges to overcome, such as the
integration of infrastructure-based and ad hoc networks, robust
algorithms for self-organizing, reconfigurable wireless networks,
on-demand service models and their provision in a highly-volatile
interconnection environment, and smooth interoperability of
architectures.
WONS, now in its nineth edition, has established itself as a
high-quality forum to address these challenges in the context of a
workshop that is rich in intense interactions and based on innovative
contributions by experts in the field.
This announcement solicits original submissions of high-quality
research papers on "wireless on-demand networks" that provide novel
insights on protocol and network design, modeling, performance
evaluation, profitability models, energy efficiency, QoS models and
mechanisms, practical implementations, service level aspects, and
Internet integration of wireless networks.
Topics related to all kinds of wireless on-demand networks comprise,
but are not limited to:
* Architecture and design
* Evaluation through simulations and experiments
* Modeling
* Integration and co-existence
* Social and economic aspects
* Pervasive and ubiquitous computing
* Localization and mobility management
* Security, privacy, and trust
* Novel applications and services
* Energy-efficient protocols and power management
* Implementations and testbeds
* Opportunistic, delay-tolerant, and dissemination-based protocols
* Mobile peer-to-peer systems
* Middleware aspects
* Self-X and network management

CALL FOR PAPERS
First International Workshop on Social Connections in the Urban Space 2011 (SocialUrb-2011)
in conjunction with IEEE SOCIALCOM 2011, MIT, USA, October 9-11, 2011
http://di.ncl.ac.uk/socialurb2011/
Important Dates
---------------
Paper Submission: 1 July 2011
Author Notification: 12 August 2011
Final Manuscript: 22 August 2011
Workshop Date: 9-11 October 2011
Background and Motivation
-------------------------
Significant amounts of data are collected in the urban space we move and live in. Most of this data is gathered by governmental and defence agencies. Satellites are used to capture movement and transport while 'dataveillance' captures people's use of credit card, mobile phone, and loyalty card information. CCTVs are also ubiquitous. More recently, applications to gather data using people's mobile phones as a sensor in the urban space have appeared and contribute to this pool of urban data. This unprecedented bottom-up approach achieves collaborative collection of large quantities of data. 'Participatory Urbanism' sees a shift in mobile device usage - from communication tool to networked mobile personal measurement instrument. Through this, individual citizens can become more proactive in their involvement with their city, neighborhood, and urban self-reflexivity.
Given this growing pool of data of the urban space, there is a question on how the data can be used fruitfully and sensibly to better understand sociality and to inform future planning of our urban environment.
Objectives
----------
This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss and explore research challenges and opportunities in social computing in urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban social life and exploit the sensory data as well as digital traces (e.g. mobile phone data, online social network data, transportation traces) to create novel urban social applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers.
The SocialUrb-2011 Workshop fosters discussions covering topics such as (but not limited to):
* Analysis of social networks in urban spaces
* Social computing applications for urban planning and design
* Social sensing methodology
* Computational social study of urban spaces
* Mining of data collected from urban social networks
* Urban social geography
* Multi-source urban social information integration
* Real-time urban social information processing
* Case studies and applications of mixed urban social sensing and mining
* Middleware for mobile urban social computing
* City-related knowledge infrastructure and computational models
* Urban social application demos and visualizations
* Security, privacy, reputation, and trust issues in urban social computing
* Impact of social computing technologies in the urban space e.g. economical, psychological.
Submission
----------
Submission must be in IEEE conference paper style with no more than 6 pages in PDF file (http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/publishing/templates.html). Submit your paper(s) at the SocialUrb-2011 submission site (https://www.easychair.org/account/signin.cgi?conf=socialurb2011). All contributions must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. All submitted papers will be reviewed and judged on originality, technical correctness, relevance, and quality of presentation by the Technical Program Committee. Should the paper be accepted, at least one of the authors must attend the workshop to present the work in order for the paper to be published by IEEE and included in the IEEE Digital Library.

CALL FOR PAPERS
First International Workshop on Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks
for Public Safety Systems (WMAPS'2011)
Co-located with IEEE MASS 2011
The 8th IEEE International Conference on
Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems
October 21, 2011
Valencia, Spain
http://www.hnps.eu/mass2011.html
Scope:
Public Safety Networks (PSNs) are the communications networks that are
established by the relevant authorities to either prepare the population
for an imminent catastrophe, or to support communication during the
actual crisis and post crisis normalisation phases. These PSNs have
special requirements, when compared to regular networks. The main
concerns in establishing public safety networks are their facility to be
deployed rapidly and their survivability.
Other important characteristics of this kind of network is that their
requirements may change radically, depending on the nature of the
particular disaster. These networks are always mission critical and once
deployed, PSNs have to be reliable since lives may depend on them.
Recent global disasters have dramatically demonstrated that network
structures can be severely affected, either directly by the disaster
itself (where the existing infrastructure is damaged or destroyed) or by
the following public reaction (overloaded networks caused by the need to
communicate with friends and family). “Historically, major disasters are
the most intense generators of telecommunications traffic”. For these
reasons, the regular public networks alone are often not enough to
support rescue and relief operations on their own.
In addition to the stated problems of equipment failures and lack of
connectivity, it must be understood that various different communication
technologies are currently used for public safety communication, and it
is common to find that each first responder group favours their own
preferred technology. For example, TETRA, Analogue Radio Networks or GSM
are used for voice communication, while data transmission for
localisation, sensor information transfer and video streaming are
currently not widely used in public safety. Local public safety agencies
also have to communicate more and more with complimentary agencies such
as other first responders, law enforcement groups, hospitals and even
military authorities. As a direct consequence of the differing
technologies in use at the same time PSNs are often not interoperable,
which may represent a problem in the case of a catastrophe.
Unfortunately existing communications networks are not always reliable
during incidents or dangerous interventions. The deployment of new, ad
hoc, dedicated, networks for Public Safety has been a long held dream,
but technical, cost and management concerns create real problems.
Finally, the scope of possible sensor use in PSNs is broad; it can
include intrusion detection, where one can use different types of
sensors to recognise potential hazard situations (e.g. by means of the
detection and tracking of abnormal behaviours using Computer
Vision-based techniques), to the integration of different technologies
used by the intervention teams in the advent of a catastrophe. Sensors
can also be used during and after incidents to measure the physical
environment and report from a distance in areas that are too dangerous
for direct human monitoring.
Topics:
Specific topics include, but are not limited to the ones listed below:
- Ad hoc communication for emergency management
- Sensor networks for Public safety networks
- Usability issues for intervention teams
- Intrusion detection
- Heterogeneous networks integration
- Mobility patterns for catastrophe scenarios
- Network security for Public safety networks
- Cooperative networks in Public Safety

> Purpose of this workshop
> The ubiquitous nature of wireless networks has spawned many interesting applications that were unimagined hitherto. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle.
> Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks and the Internet of Your Things. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today.
> There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust.
>
> Scope of the submission

> Why should you participate in this workshop?
> Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, yet very current, in the field of communications. It attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop is an ideal platform to share a vision of where we are heading, interact, and strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final program would consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field. Submissions of shorter versions of full papers that can be submitted to other conferences/journal in the near future are discouraged.
>
> Submission Instructions
> Submitted papers must represent original material that is not currently under review in any other conference or journal, and has not been previously published. Paper length should not exceed five-page technical paper manuscript.
> Papers should be submitted in PDF to the EDAS paper submission website. The first sheet should show the title of the paper, the author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), and the address (including e-mail, telephone, and fax) to which the correspondence should be sent. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. At least one author of accepted papers is required to register at the full registration rate.
