IEEE Workshop on Mobile Computing and Networking Technologies (WMCNT 2011)
Call for Papers
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scope
The Third IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Computing and Networking
Technologies (WMCNT2011) will take place in conjunction with the IEEE
International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control
Systems (ICUMT 2011) to be held in Budapest, Hungary, in October 2011.
The Workshop will be a full day event. Continuing the great success of
the previous events, WMCNT 2011 Workshop is anticipated to attract a
large number of high-quality submissions and stimulate the cutting-edge
research discussions among academic pioneering researchers/scientists
and industrial engineers/leaders from all around the world.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overview
Mobile computing and networking have inarguably emerged among the most
vibrant areas in the field of telecommunications today. Customers’
requirement for immediate response to their prerequisites, targeting on
access to information anywhere in the world at anytime, has increased
the demand for productivity and effectiveness of mobile computing and
networking. Moreover, the convergence of information communications
technology and computing is creating new demands and opportunities for
ubiquitous computing via wireless and mobile equipment without
technological restrictions. Considering also the diversification of
access technologies and their applications that prevail in the present
telecommunication environment, amalgamated with the increased user
mobility makes QoS provision a challenging issue.
Future mobile communication networks offer a variety of high quality
applications. Furthermore, several challenges are imposed by the
demanding wireless networking environment, in terms of network
architecture, channel estimation, propagation and especially radio
resource management. The understanding of these issues becomes even more
demanding due to non-uniform spectrum allocation, various radio resource
management policies, economic concerns, the scarcity of radio resources,
the inherent transmission impairments of wireless links and user mobility.
The aim of the Third IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Computing and
Networking Technologies (WMCNT 2011) is to provide an international
venue for the discussion of architecture, design, implementation,
analysis, measurement, performance and simulation in wireless, mobile
and ubiquitous computing environments. WMCNT 2011 will serve as an open
forum, where novel ideas will be exchanged via bringing together
researchers, developers and engineers in both academia and industry.

MISSION OF IJARAS:Prospective authors are invited to submit manuscripts for possible publication in the International Journal of Adaptive, Resilient, and Autonomic Systems. The primary objective of IJARAS is to provide worldwide readership to high quality, novel, effective approaches to design, develop, maintain, evaluate, and benchmark adaptive-and-dependable systems, i.e. devices and services that are built to sustain quality of service and quality of experience despite the occurrence of potentially significant and sudden changes or failures in their infrastructure and surrounding environments. IJARAS has multiple focuses, ranging from conceptual models and paradigms to technological aspects.
IJARAS builds upon a core mission statement and research direction: The awareness of today's urgent need to structure our computer systems as adaptive systems able to constantly re-optimize in the face of changes both exogenous (environmental) and endogenous (pertaining to internal assets). IJARAS introduces a problem, which implies a research direction---athesis. The truth about this statement is drastically reverberating through several domains, and in so doing several seemingly unrelated research domains such as cross-layer adaptation for mobile devices and business process re-engineering can be regarded as special cases of a larger theory of systems. This vision paves the way to cross-fertilization; and through that, IJARAS aims at becoming a powerful tool to steer novel ideas and inject new research directions in this area.
RECOMMENDED TOPICS:
IJARAS topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
* Mechanisms, both general and special-purpose, to model, design, express, and develop adaptive, autonomic and resilient systems;
* Analytical and simulation tools to measure a system's ability to withstand faults and optimally re-adjust to new environments;

Special Issue on Reactive Sensor Networks
Scope
A common assumption in Wireless Sensor Networks is that they comprise
resource-constrained static nodes which sense their environment
and then send their measurements to a central base station through mutihop
routing. Soon, it was realized that this network organization leads to
rapid energy exhaustion of sensors around the base station since these nodes
should relay all the traffic destined for the base station.
In addition, the passive nature of static sensors which can only sense and
are unable to move is not always helpful in target-tracking scenarios or in
cases
where real-time action is necessary for handling emergency situations.
Apparently, a reactive (dynamic) behavior from these networks would be
effective
for dealing with a number of changing operational conditions (e.g. node
failures, energy exhaustion in some nodes) or with real-time events.
This Special Issue will focus on all forms of reactive behavior that can be
incorporated in the functionality of a Wireless Sensor Network and will also
identify new possibilities, opportunities and challenges deriving from this
new paradigm. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
§ Sink mobility in Wireless Sensor Networks
§ Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks
§ Wireless Sensor Networks with mobile sensors
§ Re-tasking in Wireless Sensor Networks
§ Mobile agent based solutions in Wireless Sensor Networks
§ Node redeployment techniques in Wireless Sensor Networks for improved
connectivity and/or coverage
§ Re-clustering techniques in Wireless Sensor Networks
§ Dynamic MAC and routing protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks for
increased network lifetime
§ Reactive methods in Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks
§ Reactive methods for target tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks
§ Dynamic techniques for data aggregation/fusion in Wireless Sensor
Networks
§ Security, trust and privacy in Reactive Sensor Networks

Sixth IEEE LCN Workshop on Network Measurements
in conjunction with the 36th IEEE Local Computer Networks (LCN)
http://www.cnrl.colostate.edu/IEEELCN_WNM2011/WNM2011.htm
4-7 October 2011
Hilton Hotel Bonn, Germany
The LCN International Workshop on Network Measurements, will be
held in conjunction with the IEEE Conference on Local Computer
Networks (LCN). The workshop will include papers and panels
dealing with latest advances and challenges facing the field.
The expected audience will include networking researchers,
practitioners, scientists and engineers from industry, academia
and government. LCN registration will cover workshop attendance.
The first five IEEE LCN Workshops on Network Measurements were very
successful in bringing together a set of participants actively
working on
network measurements in various domains. We will continue to address
network measurements from different perspectives and different
domains.
Topics of Interest:
Network measurements are crucial for operation, diagnosis, and
characterization of complex networks. Accurate characterization is
important for understanding the behavior of networks and for
evaluating
the scalability, reliability and performance of protocols. Cross-layer
designs, and overlay protocols often rely on measurements.
Measurements in
wired and wireless domains, and end-to-end and subnet measurements
face
domain specific constraints while sharing common objectives. Complex
dynamics of the networks and also the difficulties in performing
measurement itself pose many challenges. This workshop will provide a
forum for researchers and practitioners interested in network
measurements
to discuss and exchange measurement related research in both
wireless and
wired domains, and also explore emerging fields of measurements
such as on
mobile devices.
High quality, previously unpublished work is solicited on the topics
including, but not limited to:
Measurements on homogeneous and heterogeneous networks
Physical layer characteristics and measurements for wireless
networks
Implementation and operational challenges of wireless testbeds
Mobility models and traffic patterns
Wired and wireless domain measurements
Measurement tools, benchmarks and data sets
Bandwidth, capacity and delay estimation
Active and passive measurements at core nodes
End-to-end and/or application-level measurements over the Internet

User Cooperation for Wireless Networks
As the wireless communication channel is shared in nature, user
cooperation is a key enabling tool to exploit the spatial multiplexing and
diversity gains to improve spectrum and energy efficiency of wireless
networks. User cooperation can take many forms, including the physical
layer cooperative communications, the link layer cooperative and cognitive
medium access, the network layer cooperative routing and load balancing,
the collaborative end-to-end congestion control, and the cooperative
peer-to-peer services, etc. The development and optimization of
cooperation technologies requires inter-disciplinary efforts, from
advanced signal processing and communication to network protocol design
and optimization. It also sparks theoretical breakthroughs in topology
control, nonlinear optimization, signal processing and complex networks,
and stimulates practical advances in mobile communications and networking
technologies, devices and platforms. This special issue is to dissemina!
te the state-of-the-art results in this fast-moving research area, and to
bring together experts from different disciplines, with the goal of
fostering interactions among them to promote further research interests
and activities to develop new user cooperation technologies for wireless
networks. Specifically, this special issue targets (but is not limited to)
the following aspects:
- Topology control for user cooperation

Call for Papers
***IEEE Communications Magazine Feature Topic on*
***Information-Centric Networking*
*//**/Background and motivation/*
Information-Centric Networking (ICN) marks a fundamental shift in
communications and networking. ICN focuses on finding and transmitting
information to end users instead of connecting end hosts that exchange
information. The key concepts are expected to have a huge impact on the
familiar textbook protocol stack, in network architecture in general,
and will create new opportunities for all associated stakeholders
including equipment vendors, network operators, service and content
providers, and above all end-users.
*//**/Scope and Objectives /*
Information-centric networking is to succeed only if it can to provide
clearly superior solutions to well-known problems in the current
generation of all-IP networks and can be introduced to general usage
incrementally. We invite authors to consider the following aspects with
respect to information-centric networks:
· Naming & addressing: there is currently a strong association
between content naming and addressing. Information-centric networking
aims to introduce new ways foridentifying content in a
location-independent manner. What breakthroughs in naming and addressing
will make ICN scalable when faced with a global network of billions of
devices and zettabytes of available content?
· Protocol stack: the original TCP/IP protocol stack was neat and
simple. Today’s stack is arguably neither having been extended through
patchwork over several decades. Can ICN simplify things?
· Network architecture: ICN is expected to have a profound effect
on network architecture as storage capacity becomes an integral element
of all network nodes. What does an ICN network architecture look like?
· Management: resource/mobility/multihoming management are add-ons
to the current architecture. With ICN we have the opportunity to include
support for all these aspects right from the start. What are the
essential characteristics of a complete management framework that is
scalable, flexible, and suitable for ICN?
· Caching: Information-centric networking is an in-network process
that relies on content storage in the network so as to efficiently
access popular content, alleviate flash-crowd effects, improve the
end-user quality of experience, and increase network efficiency. This
raises new issues to be addressed such as buffer management and caching
policy.
· Energy efficiency: battery-powered devices abound and will
dominate in the future as the primary means for connecting to the
Internet. At the same time, there is a strong drive for energy-efficient
networking from core networks to access networks, and from data centers
to home media centers. ICN has more leverage to make tradeoffs between
storage/computation/communication—will ICN pave the way to a holistic
energy efficient operation?
· Internet of Things (IoT): as the physical world is more and more
connected to the digital world through a multitude of sensors and
actuators, the current host-centric approach followed in IP networks,
typically requiring synchronous, always on, end-to-end connections
stretches beyond its capacity to deliver, introducing further
inefficiencies. How does ICN scale in the scenarios envisioned for the
IoT and how does it compare with current IP-based IoT solutions?
· Security and trust is established today through the use of third
parties in an end-to-end manner. Synchronous three-way, end-to-end
connectivity is a prerequisite, and it does not guarantee provenance.
Can ICN foster the development of a more secure and trusted global
communications infrastructure?
· Business models in the Internet are established between providers
according to peering agreements. The new ICN paradigm based on
in-network caching may impact the current relationships between players.
Which business models could foster a fair relationship between content
producers, content providers and service/network providers?
Submitted articles do not need to cover all these aspects but should
strive to clearly contrast the ICN approach with the current
TCP/IP-based state of affairs.
Prospective authors should describe the key concepts, design,
implementation, and evaluation of ICN proposals. Articles that
demonstrate the feasibility of groundbreaking approaches through
testbed/experimental results are particularly welcome. Topics of
particular interest include:
· Naming and name resolution in ICN
· Information/service discovery in ICN
· Flow and congestion control in ICN
· Routing and forwarding in ICN
· Caching an buffer management in ICN
· Security, self-certification, privacy and trust in
information-centric networks
· QoS/QoE in ICN
· ICN over heterogeneous networks
· Network programming and APIs for ICN
· Scalability and Performance
· Empirical evaluations of ICN protocol stacks
· Use cases
· Business models
*//**/Submission/*
We invite authors to submit articles reporting original, previously
unpublished research work on information-centric networking. Articles
must be tutorial in nature, accessible to a wide audience in the
communications technology community. Articles shouldbe limited to
approximately 4500 words, and include no more than a combined total of 6
tables and figures. References should also be limited to no more than
15. Authors can find the complete article guidelines at
http://dl.comsoc.org/livepubs/ci1/info/sub_guidelines.html. Authors need
to adhere to the IEEE Communications Magazine limits on mathematical
content and strive for a tutorial exposition of the problems and their
solutions. All articles to be considered for publication must be
submitted through theIEEE Manuscript Central
(http://commag-ieee.manuscriptcentral.com). Select “July 2012:
Information-Centric Networking.”

Call for Open Source Software Competition
ACM Multimedia 2011
Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. Nov.28-Dec.1, 2011
http://www.acmmm11.org
The Open-Source Software Competition is an integral part of the ACM
Multimedia program. The ACM Multimedia 2011 Open-Source Software
Competition is the eighth running competition. It is mainly intended
to celebrate and encourage the contribution of researchers, software
developers and educators to advance the field by providing the
community with implementations of codecs, middleware, frameworks,
toolkits, libraries, multimedia players, applications, authoring
tools, and other multimedia software. This year, we encourage
submission of instructional open source software designed for
educational use in teaching multimedia-related courses at
undergraduate or graduate level. Such software should be designed with
educational suitability in mind (e.g., can be used as a basis for
programming assignments, laboratory exercises, and class projects).
To qualify for the ACM Multimedia Open-Source Software Competition
software must be provided with source code and licensed in such a
manner that it can be used free of charge in academic and research
settings. For the competition, the software will be built from the
sources. All source code, license, installation instructions and other
documentation must be available on a public web page. Dependencies on
non-open source third-party software are discouraged with the
exception of operating systems and commonly found commercial packages
available free of charge.
Authors are encouraged to prepare as much documentation as possible,
including examples of how the provided software might be used,
screencast showing the software in action, download statistics, or
other public usage information, etc. Entries will be
peer-reviewed. Selected authors will be invited to demonstrate their
software as part of the conference program and their overview papers
will be included in the ACM Multimedia 2011 Conference proceedings.
An overall winning entry will be formally recognized at ACM Multimedia
2011. The criteria for judging all submissions include broad
applicability and potential impact, novelty, technical depth, demo
suitability, and other miscellaneous factors (e.g., maturity,
popularity, student-led, no dependence on closed source, etc.). To
encourage more diverse participation, previous years’ non-winning
entries are welcome to re-submit for the 2011 competition. Student-led
efforts are particularly encouraged. The particular application area
targeted by the open source software will not be a criterion for the
winning entry.
Additional information including guidelines are available on the web.
Important Dates:
May 09, 2011: Submission deadline
June 27, 2011: Notification of acceptance
