Femtocell technologies accelerate the cost effective provision of ubiquitous
broadband services by convergence between fixed and wireless broadband. This
full day workshop aims to bring together internationally leading academic
and industrial perspectives and thinking to highlight and discuss recent
progress in femtocell technologies. The list of promising new developments
includes cooperative networks of femtocells and extending the classical
concept of indoor femtocells to the outdoors, e.g. as fixed relays in
macrocells for enhancing coverage and cell-edge capacity or as mobile
femtocells in public transports. Self-organizing techniques for high
capacity and optimum use of transmit power whilst minimizing OPEX and
simplifying complexity for remote network management are vitally important
to cope with expected multiple million femtocells networks.
Scope and Objectives
--------------------
In view of current standardization activities in 3GPP and IEEE, changing
regulatory landscape and impetus from industrial bodies such as Femto Forum,
this workshop focuses on presenting and debating advanced femtocell
technologies that have the potential to be considered in future standards
such as LTE-A to make the radio access solutions highly efficient with major
leapfrog in spectral-efficiency per unit area, while minimizing the transmit
power. Specifically, but not exclusively, the workshop proposes to address
the following issues:
* Optimization of Radio Access
* New generation of baseband and radio frequency techniques
* Smart interference management
* Self-configuration and self-optimization techniques
* Network management and architecture
* Field Trials / Test-beds / Regulatory issues
Submission Guidelines
---------------------
Papers need to be uploaded to the VTC Trackchair
(http://vtc11s-workshops.trackchair.com), should be in English, not
exceeding 5 double-column pages, and should follow IEEE paper templates.
Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE Xplorer. They will be
presented either orally or by means of a poster.

mobile, and multimedia pervasive communications.
The evolution of wireless networking technologies and their key role in
Future Internet scenarios offer an increasing wealth of opportunities
for distributing multimedia contents over wireless networks, enabling
dissemination of professional contents to mobile users as well as
sharing user-generated contents between them. Users will be able to
retrieve, publish, and manage information, communicate with other users
or devices, access and author services, create and exploit context-
awareness and so on. Papers that present original work, validated by
experimentation, simulation, or analysis, are solicited. Practical
experiences and experimental efforts from both industry and academy,
duly documenting the lessons learned from test-beds, field-trials, or
real deployments, are also welcome.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Wireless multimedia systems,services&applications
- System prototypes, measurements, real deployment, and experiences
- Opportunistic and delay-tolerant networks
- Mobile Social Networking
- Participatory and urban sensing
- Energy-efficient protocols and power management
- Seamless inter-networking and self-organization
- Networking services for pervasive systems
- Content-centric architectures, multimedia content management and
distribution for mobile networks
- Ad-hoc, Sensor and wireless mesh networks
- Wireless BAN, PAN, LAN, MAN and WAN
- Vehicular wireless networks
- Middleware services for wireless, mobile and multimedia networks
- Context-awareness in wireless, mobile and multimedia networks

CALL FOR PAPERS
Workshop on optimization issues in energy efficient distributed systems (OPTIM 2011)
As part of

The International Conference on High Performance Computing & Simulation (HPCS 2011)
In conjunction with
The International Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing Conference (IWCMC 2011)
July 4 – July 8, 2011
Istanbul, Turkey

Submission deadline: January 11, 2011
============================================================================
SCOPE AND OBJECTIVES
Minimization of energy consumption has become a central issue in designing distributed systems that range from wireless ad hoc networks to data centers.
Because battery technologies have not yet matched advances in hardware and software technologies, saving energy in battery-operated devices is very important for mobile/wireless networks. Similarly, minimizing energy consumption in high performance computing centers will, in addition to saving power consumption, require less cooling mechanisms.
These new challenges require innovative and effective optimization solutions for minimizing power consumption in distributed systems, such as energy-efficient scheduling algorithms and energy-efficient Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols.
The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers who are interested in addressing issues of concern and challenges related to optimizing computing system power consumption, energy efficient systems, and distributed systems.
Both theoretical papers and papers describing practical experiences will be welcome.
The Workshop topics include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Optimization of energy-efficient protocols/algorithms
- Energy-efficient scheduling algorithms
- Energy-efficient cross-layer protocols
- Energy-efficient MAC protocols
- Energy-efficient routing protocols
- Voltage and frequency scaled networks
- Energy-efficient communication protocols
- Energy-efficient protocols/algorithms in PHY, IP layers or above
- Hardware solutions for achieving energy efficiency in large-scale networked systems
- Virtualization techniques for energy efficiency
- Network models and simulation modules/tools for energy efficient solutions

Wiley International Journal of Communication Systems (IJCS)
Special Issue on
"Interdisciplinary and Cross-layer Design of Mobile Social Networks and Wireless Networks"
Social Networks have attracted billions of active users under major online social network systems such as MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, DouBan, etc. Nowadays these social networks are increasingly used on mobile devices thus rendering a new research field of mobile social networks. The marriage of current wired-network-based social networks with mobile wireless networks triggers exciting new research areas. For instance, knowing the network features such as throughput and delay can help mobile social networks select a contact (e.g., a job advice centre) to which the network route has the best performance. This leads to the so-called wireless-aware social networks and the problem domain is within social networks. On the other hand, there is also social-aware or social inspired wireless network research where the knowledge of social network users is exploited for the benefit of wireless network design. Therefore, a cross-layer design that incorporates both the upper-layer mobile
social networks and the lower-layer wireless networks is needed. And this comprises the thematic essence of this Special Issue.
This cross-layer design method calls for a novel interdisciplinary research thinking that embraces not only these disciplines that are closely related to the field such as computer science, social science and network/communication engineering but also other subjects such as biology, physics, etc. The goal of this SI is to solicit the state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions that embark on the above interdisciplinary and cross-layer design methodologies to design and implement a better-performed mobile social network or wireless network. The topics of interest include, but limited to, the following:
Group 1: Network-aware Mobile Social Networks
*) Implications, opportunities and challenges of mobile social networks caused by mobile wireless networks
*) Network-aware modelling, design and development of mobile social networks
*) Network-aware social search, data collection, processing, ranking and recommendation
*) Network-aware middleware, framework for mobile social networks
*) Network-aware real-world applications, services, systems of mobile social networks
*) Experimental results or trials of network-aware mobile social networks
*) New aspects of security, privacy and trust in mobile wireless networks
Group 2: Socially-aware Wireless Networks
*) Implications, opportunities and challenges of mobile wireless networks caused by social networks
*) Social-aware modelling of mobile wireless networks, planning, protocol design and deployment
*) Community based mobility model, handoff management
*) Applying social network theories into wireless network problem solving
*) Optimal and scalable distribution of dynamic content (such as news or traffic information) over mobile social networks
*) New social-aware/inspired wireless content distribution networks
*) Network security protocols/algorithms design using social data
