Call for Papers
Special Issue of Ad Hoc Networks (Elsevier) on
Cross-Layer Design in Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks
For well over a decade, the international community has invested
significant
effort conducting research on ad hoc and sensor networks. These networks
show
promise to support the development of always-on services in next generation
mobile systems. Initially, it was natural to inherit the traditional
layered
network architecture in designing systems and services. More recently, the
need to support high performance applications while coping with the limited
node capabilities highlights the necessity of cross-layer design in these
networks. Cross-layer design offers new opportunities to exploit the
potential
offered by joint optimization of design parameters, satisfy QoS
requirements,
among others, that cannot be addressed by traditional architecture in a
satisfactory manner. However, at the current time, we lack a clear
understanding of the interactions among the layers, and a comprehensive
framework for cross-layer design in the network stack.
Scope of Contributions
The objective of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art
research contributions, tutorials, and position papers that address the key
aspects of cross layer design in ad hoc and sensor networks. Original
manuscripts describing completed and unpublished work not currently under
review by any other journal, magazine, or conference are solicited.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Architecture issues for cross-layer design in ad hoc and sensor networks
* Standardization issues related to quality-aware cross-layer design
* Performance optimization for cross-layer design of ad hoc and sensor
networks
* Cross-layer design issues for QoS provisioning in ad hoc and sensor
networks
* Cross-layer strategies in wireless sensor and actuator networks
* Application layer adaptation based on cross-layer notifications
* Interactions between routing/mobility management and congestion control
* Cross-layer optimization for energy, network lifetime, and capacity
* Cross-layer error and delay control
* Channel access algorithms for cross-layered ad hoc communication networks
* Cross-layer design of MIMO systems
* Multi-user detection in cross-layer design
* Design, implementation and test-bed/experimental results
* Software defined radio for ad hoc and sensor networks
* Cross-layer design for P2P streaming
* Cross-layer design for multimedia systems
* Cross layer issues in vehicular networking

---call for paper---
The traditional centralized wireless and mobile networks are mainly
based on single-hop architecture and rely on fixed infrastructure such
as base stations or access points. The proliferation and deployment of
radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, Wireless
PANs, ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks with distinguishing
characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power, mobility, and
prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous access
across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous
environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon
the application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs)
available. The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on
the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but
introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The
design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop
wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks
continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack.
Therefore, it is necessary to aim at heterogeneous architectures and
services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop as
well as multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together the research community in
order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the
latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous
multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and
previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and
application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks.

Topics related to heterogeneous, multi-hop, wireless and mobile networks
in the areas of:
* Multi-hop architectures and protocols for resource management
* Quality of services (QoS) delivery
* Seamless Mobility
* Robust and scalable routing protocols
* MAC protocols supporting mobility and vertical handover
* Self-configuration and synchronization
* Security
* Topology control and management
* Mobility models and location management
* Cross-layer design and interactions
* Modeling and performance evaluation
* Algorithms for localization and signal processing
* Implementation testbeds
* Operating systems and middleware

CALL FOR PAPERS
Sensor nodes are tiny autonomous devices that combine sensing, computing
and wireless communication capabilities. These nodes are deeply embedded
into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such
as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or
images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of
such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications
including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery
operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor
network deployments and prototypic implementations are still not
commonplace. However, experiences gained in such deployments are crucial
for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to
refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and
mechanisms for sensor networks.
This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from academia and
industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. We expect the
workshop to act as a forum for the sensor network research community to
discuss open issues, novel solutions and the future development of
wireless sensor networks in general. We encourage contributions

Call for Papers
Elsevier Journal of Optical Switching and Networking (OSN)
Special Issue on Green Communications and Networking
Responsible use of energy has become a crucial issue in large networks
and information systems in general
in the last few years. Energy efficiency is now a critical item in the
list of performance metrics of
networking equipment and networked systems. Understanding and
economizing energy use has emerged
as a high-impact research area in networking system of all kinds. Recent
studies suggest that the core
network expends the largest fraction of the energy consumed by a large
network system, and network
energy expenditure can be a significant part of planetary computing and
communication, contrary to earlier
belief that the bulk of energy expenditure is at end-systems or at most
the edge network. The role of
interaction between end-systems and the network has also been recognized
in achieving better energy
economy.
The OSN special issue on Green Communications and Networking will
archive timely research in this area
particularly relevant to optical networking design and technologies. The
SI may also publish tutorial
material suitable for introducing active researchers to different
aspects of this new research area. Tutorials
articles will be expected to address a broad range of issues in order to
be considered suitable. Topics of
interest for original research contributions include, but are not
limited to:
• Metrics of energy-efficiency in optical networks and equipment
• Measurements of energy expenditures, data and methodology
• Energy efficient devices and designs
• Hardware, architectural, and protocol support issues for energy economy
• Network design (topology, grooming, placement, wavelength assignment,
traffic engg., etc.) in
support of energy economy
• Energy issues in PONs
• Energy efficient interaction of network with smartgrids of clouds
• Energy-optimal split between optical and electronic layers (e.g.,
IP-Ethernet-WDM)
• Energy Efficient Optical Ethernet
• Optical Switching in Routers and Switches for Reducing Power Consumption
• Hierarchical techniques of energy efficiency
• Energy awareness in network equipment and operations
• Business models of energy-efficient optical networks
• Cooperation between network and endpoints for improving energy efficiency
• Optical Networking for Green Datacenters
All submissions must be original work not previously published or
currently under review by any other
journal. Partial overlap with previously published conference or
workshop papers is acceptable, but must
be disclosed at the time of submission. Submission, review, and decision
process will use the usual
Elsevier OSN portal, accessible through
http://ees.elsevier.com/osn/admin/default.asp . During submission,
please make sure to select ‘SI: Green Communications’ when you reach the
“Article Type” step. More
details about the journal in general, and author guidelines, can be
found from http://ees.elsevier.com/osn/ .
Important dates :
Original submission deadline: June 1, 2010
Review decision to authors: September 1, 2010
Final camera-ready deadline: October 15, 2010
SI publication: Early (1Q or 2Q) 2011
Guest Editors:
Rudra Dutta (North Carolina State University, USA)
Dominic Schupke (Nokia Siemens Networks, Germany)
Yoh Somemura (NTT Labs, Japan)
