## -- Conference Dates: June 21 - 23, 2010
##
Poster and Demonstration Session:
DCOSS 2010 will feature a poster/demo session that provides a forum for
distributed computing and sensor network researchers and developers from
academia, industry, and government to interact with and explore the latest
research results. Towards this goal, DCOSS 2010 solicits posters and
demonstrations presenting recent original results or ongoing research in the
general area of sensor networks. Authors are invited to submit interesting
results on all aspects of sensor networks, including algorithms, protocols,
systems and applications.
Poster presentations will provide authors with early feedback on their
research work and enable them to exchange ideas with DCOSS participants.
Demonstrations provide a venue for hands-on experience for conference
attendees and a means for researchers and attendees to interact with new
research prototypes and testbeds.
Each poster or demonstration presenter will have the opportunity to present
a one-minute rapid oral presentation of their work to attendees. This oral
presentation will help generate interest in the topic of the poster or
demonstration, to encourage attendees to learn more.
All posters and demonstrations will be reviewed and judged based on their
originality, technical contribution and, particularly, their potential to
generate interesting and interactive exchanges of ideas.
Abstracts:
Poster and demonstration abstracts are limited to 2 pages (in <a href="
http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/authors/transjnl/index.html#template">standard
IEEE Transactions format</a>) and should highlight the leading ideas of the
on-going research and its expected outcome and impact. All accepted
abstracts will appear in hardcopy. Poster abstracts should present a
summary of the research work and ideas that will be presented during the
session. Demonstration abstracts should describe the demonstration
activity, and in particular, describe special requirements for space and
dedicated frequency channels, if any. Accepted posters and demonstrations
must be presented at the workshop, and at least one author must be
registered for the conference.
Submission Instructions:
Poster and demo abstracts should be sent via email as a PDF file to the
Poster/Demo Session Chairs at npatwari [AT] ece [dot] utah [dot] edu.
Please indicate "DCOSS 2010 Poster Abstract Submission" or "DCOSS 2010

1st International Workshop on "QoS Provision in Wireless Sensor Networks"
http://www.icte.uowm.gr/qpwsn10/
organized in conjunction with
The 6th IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor
Systems (DCOSS '10)
23 June 2010, Santa Barbara, California
http://www.dcoss.org/
Important Dates:
Manuscript Submission: 23 April 2010
Acceptance Notification: 7 May 2010
Camera ready: 21 May 2010
Scope and Overview:
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are a modern kind of wireless networks,
where numerous monitoring devices are interconnected to communicate their
collected data. The literature has not paid yet enough attention to QoS in
WSNs. This is mainly due to the currently unclear purpose and usage of the
WSNs, which significantly differ from the traditional networks. However,
modern WSN applications require traffic differentiation, guaranteed
end-to-end delivery, low delay jitter, and high throughput. The sensors'
limited resources and energy autonomy combined with the unreliable wireless
medium make QoS support in WSN certainly challenging. Thus, new designs for
offering QoS in WSNs are becoming necessary.
This Workshop will try to analyze modern methods of providing QoS support in
WSNs, explain all related issues, highlight the problems that arise when
trying to provide QoS demanding services over wireless networks, present the
theoretical background, bring out related solutions given so far, and
moreover, exhibit the latest research concepts and relevant ideas regarding
near-future implementations.
Topics of Interest:
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Multimedia transmissions over WSNs
- QoS capable routing algorithms for WSNs
- Traffic prioritization schemes for WSNs
- QoS supportive protocols for medium access control in WSNs
- Power saving mechanisms for WSNs
- Medical content transfer using sensors for telemedicine
- Categorized data communications over environment monitoring WSNs
- Novel applications for QoS aware WSNs
- Cross-layer techniques for QoS provision in WSNs
- Simulation of QoS aware WSNs
- Analytical models for QoS aware WSNs

CALL FOR PAPERS
MobiCPS 2010 - The 1st IEEE International Workshop on Mobile
Cyber-Physical Systems
http://www.cpschina.org/mobicps
In conjunction with UIC2010
Xi'an, China
26-29 October, 2010
We are currently on the brink of a revolutionary transformation from
stand-alone embedded systems to ubiquitous cyber-physical systems (CPS)
that bridge the virtual world of computing and communications and the
real world. Cyber-physical systems are tight integrations of
computation, networking, and physical objects, in which embedded devices
are networked to sense, monitor and control the physical world. It is
believed that CPS will transform how we interact with the physical world
just like the Internet transformed how we interact with one another. In
particular, there is a trend to build CPS upon wireless and mobile
networks as a consequence of unprecedented proliferation of these
technologies in recent years. In addition to wireless sensors and
actuators, the number of mobile devices that can support wirelessly
networked cyber-physical applications has exploded. Some usual examples
include smartphones, PDAs, autonomous robots, wearable computers, among
others. Ubiquitous applications and services enabled by mobile CPS are
opening up great opportunities for improving the quality of our daily
life. To fully explore the potential of mobile CPS, however, significant
challenges are yet to be overcome.

MCS 2010
The First ACM Workshop on Mobile Cloud Computing & Services:
Social Networks and Beyond
Co-located with ACM MobiSys 2010, San Francisco, USA
June 15, 2010
http://www.cs.colorado.edu/~rhan/MCS2010.html
with support from Nokia and Intel
DESCRIPTION
Mobile phone applications are exploding in popularity, and can strongly
benefit from services and resources offered by cloud computing,
including mobile social networking. This workshop seeks to bring
together researchers and practitioners interested in the intersection of
mobile computing and cloud computing. The scope of the MCS workshop
will encompass system and networking topics such as mobile cloud
computing platforms and services, mobile social networks, device
virtualization, notification services, data mining services and location
services.
Mobile phone applications demand greater resources and improved
interactivity for better user experience. Resources in cloud computing
platforms such as Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure, and Google AppEngine are
a natural fit to remedy the lack of local resources in mobile devices.
Mobile cloud computing refers to an infrastructure where data storage
and data processing happen outside of the mobile device enabling a new
class of applications previously not possible, e.g. context-aware mobile
social networks. Mobile cloud computing is poised to become a
disruptive force in the mobile world.
While prior work on thin client related research is relevant, the
availability of cloud computing resources on a pay-as-you-go basis, the
paradigm shift introduced by social networks, the advances in
virtualization, the emergence of LTE and WiMAX, IEEE 802.11n and 60 GHz,
and mobile application programming platforms create a rich new set of
research challenges and opportunities.
Suggested topics for paper submissions include but are not limited to:
• Mobile cloud computing programming model
• Mobile social networks: applications and experiences, system design
and architecture
• Data services and architectures
• Cloud-assisted energy management of mobile devices
• Mobile device virtualization
• Fairness and isolation of mobile devices in the cloud
• Large scale mobile cloud applications
• Data privacy and security
• High availability and reliability
• Economic considerations in offering mobile cloud computing services
• Distribution of resources and computation between mobile devices
and the cloud
• Data mining and machine learning in mobile cloud computing
• Context-aware services and computing

CALL FOR PAPERS
A SPECIAL ISSUE of Ad Hoc Networks journal on
"Recent advances in analysis and deployment of
IEEE 802.11e and IEEE 802.11p protocol families"
Guest editors: Jelena Misic, Ryerson University
Vojislav B. Misic, Ryerson University
INTRODUCTION
============
In the past several years, analysis of various aspects of IEEE 802.11e has
resulted in large number of contributions. Researchers have addressed
saturation and non-saturation conditions of Enhanced Distributed Channel
Access (EDCA) function, internal vs. external contention, Hybrid
Coordination Function (HCF), Transmission Opportunity (TXOP), Block
Acknowledgement and Admission Control. However, due to the complexity of the
standard there are still several areas that are not well investigated and
not well understood, including interaction among protocol functions,
interaction with higher protocol layers, interaction caused by
multi-hopping, and interaction with other wireless technologies such as
personal area networks and wireless sensor networks.
A related protocol, IEEE 802.11p, is designed for wireless access in
vehicular environments (WAVE), with higher layers supported by the recent
IEEE standards 1609.1, 1609.2, 1609.3 and 1609.4. IEEE 802.11p differs from
IEEE 802.11e in several important aspects, including lack of HCF and TXOP
functionality. It is unique because it allows multi-channel operation and
aggressive differentiation among traffic classes. Given the non-uniform node
density in vehicular applications, it becomes crucial to avoid the
saturation regime. Deployment of IEEE 802.11p in VANETs will require one-hop
broadcasting as well as unicasting and multi-hop communications; as this
will definitely affect all higher layer protocols, their interaction has to
be carefully investigated.
The main purpose of this Special Issue is to promote further research
interests and activities on IEEE 802.11e and IEEE 802.11p protocols. We are
interested in analytical, experimental, and systems-related papers in all
currently not-investigated aspects of those protocols.
TOPICS OF INTEREST
==================
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Multi-hopping with IEEE 802.11e or IEEE 802.11p;
- Interconnection between personal area networks/ wireless sensor networks
with IEEE 802.11e, and IEEE 802.11p;
- Interaction between protocol functions e.g. HCF and EDCA;
- Admission control in IEEE 802.11e or IEEE 802.11p with multiple protocol
functions;
- Interaction of higher protocol layers with IEEE 802.11e and IEEE 802.11p;
- Multi-channel operation of IEEE 802.11p (WAVE);
- Impact of IEEE 802.11p on infotainment applications in WAVE;
- Modeling of Wireless Short Message Protocol over WAVE and interaction with
TCP/UDP used for infotainment applications;
- Impact of IEEE 802.11p on security functions in VANET.

Subject and Purpose of the Workshop
We lately witness a tremendous development in the wireless sensor
networking (WSN), which make it possible to
monitor, unobtrusively and for long periods of time the physical
environment and to collect the relevant data. For
many applications, the sensor networks cannot operate in complete
isolation. There must be a way enabling a
monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced
by the sensor network, and even to
interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read
the sensed value instantaneously, fix some
inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By
connecting the sensor network to an existing
network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet,
mobile smart networks, and notably the
global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be
straightforward. However, many questions
need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such
interconnection become effective. Suitability of IP
standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture.
Is it more effective to use fixed gateways?
Or is it better to employ a dynamic ad hoc mode where all nodes (or
several nodes) cooperatively and alternatively
act as gateways. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks
new vulnerabilities will take place. An
intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore,
but it might remotely launch attacks.
Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered.
Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also
important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. This
workshop is a forum for researchers,
academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the
interconnection of wireless sensor networks,
and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions.
Topics
Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to the
interconnection and integration of WSN to other
networks, including but not limited to:
- Interconnection architecture aspects
- Authentication and security issues
- Vulnerability, protection, and fault-tolerance of WSN
- Quality of Service (QoS) issues in WSN-based integrated networks
- Information processing
- Routing protocols for cross networks
- Network and transport layer protocols for cross networks
- Testbeds for integrated networks
- Middlewares
- Integrated applications and services for cross networks
- Sensor tasking, control, and actuation
- Distributed query processing
- Integration of Body area networks to WLAN and beyond
- In-network processing and aggregation
- Connectivity & longevity
- Location and time services
- Integration of sensor networks and web-based services
Submission Guidelines and Policy
Submitted papers must represent original material that is not currently
under review in any other conference or
journal, and has not been previously published. Papers are restricted to
a maximum length of 6 pages, including
text, figures, and references. All papers will be reviewed. Accepted and
registered papers will appear in the
conference proceedings. At least one author of accepted papers is
required to register and attend the workshop to
present the paper.
