ACM HotNets-IX
October 20-21, 2010
Monterey, CA
http://conferences.sigcomm.org/hotnets/2010/
Call for Papers
The Ninth ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Networks (HotNets-IX) will
bring together people with interest in computer networks to engage in
a lively debate on the theory and practice of networking. Continuing
the HotNets tradition, the workshop will provide a venue for
presenting and discussing innovative ideas that have the potential to
significantly influence the community. The goal is to promote
community-wide discussion of those ideas.
We invite researchers and practitioners to submit short position
papers describing such ideas. A paper could, for example, expose a new
problem, advocate a new approach, re-frame or debunk existing work,
report unexpected results from a deployment, or propose new evaluation
methodologies. We especially encourage submissions of early-stage work
and enticing but unproven ideas. Once fully developed and evaluated,
the work may be relevant to conferences such as SIGCOMM, SOSP, SenSys,
NSDI, MobiCom, PODC, or Infocom.
HotNets takes a broad view of networking research. This view includes
new ideas relating to (but not limited to) home and enterprise
networks, ISP networks, sensor and personal area networks, wireless
and acoustic networks, data center networks, peer-to-peer networks,
network architecture, and disruption-tolerant networks. It encompasses
all aspects of such networks, including (but not limited to) resource
management, economics and evolution, robustness and security,
mobility, interactions with applications, energy, measurement and
diagnosis, and hardware.
Position papers will be selected based on originality, likelihood of
spawning insightful discussion at the workshop, and technical
merit. Accepted papers will be posted online prior to the workshop and
a workshop summary will be published in ACM SIGCOMM's Computer
Communication Review (CCR), widely disseminating the ideas discussed
at the workshop.
Workshop Participation
HotNets is an invitation-only workshop. To ensure an interactive
atmosphere, attendance will be limited to around 60
people. Invitations will be extended per the following priorities:
* one author per accepted paper, any speakers invited by the
Program Committee, and the Program and Steering Committees,
* co-authors of accepted and submitted papers, preferring students
as available travel support allows, and
* event-sponsor representatives and additional authors of
submitted papers at the discretion of the Program Committee.
Submission Instructions
Submitted papers must be no longer than 6 pages (10 point font, 1 inch
margins). All submissions must be blind: submissions must not indicate
the names or affiliations of the authors in the paper. Only electronic
submissions in PDF will be accepted. Submissions must be written in
English, render without error using standard tools (e.g., Acrobat
Reader), and print on US-Letter sized paper. Papers must contain novel
ideas and must differ significantly in content from previously
published papers and papers under simultaneous submission.

IMPORTANT DATES
Paper Submission Deadline: April 23rd, 2010
Notification of Acceptance: May 28th, 2010
Submission of camera-ready papers: June 25th, 2010
***************************************************************************
The focus of Mobimedia this year will be on future Internet for green
and pervasive media.
The promise of a truly pervasive experience is to have the freedom to
roam around anywhere and not be bound to a single location, however, the
energy required to keep mobile devices connected to the network over
extended periods of time quickly dissipates. In fact, energy is a
critical resource in the design of wireless networks since wireless
devices are usually powered by batteries.
From the mobile manufacturer’s perspective the energy consumption
problem is critical, not only technically but also taking into account
the market expectations from a newly introduced technology. In fact
there exists a continuously growing gap between the energy consumption
of emerging radio systems and what can be achieved by Battery technology
evolution; Scaling and circuit design progress; System level
architecture progress; and Thermal and cooling techniques. Without new
approaches for energy saving, there is a significant threat that the 4G
mobile users will be searching for power outlets rather than network
access, and becoming once again bound to a single location.
There is added momentum from the European stage for green radio to
globally reduce the electromagnetic radiation levels to have a better
coexistence of wireless system (less interference) as well as a reduced
human exposure to radiation leading to the so called Green Wireless
technologies.
Hence, there is a clear need for disruptive strategies to address all
aspects of power efficiency from the user devices through to the core
infrastructure of the network and how these devices and equipment
interact with each other.
In this framework, Mobimedia will provide an international forum where
industry, researchers and academia will be able to interact and exchange
experiences, ideas, and research results surrounding all aspects on
power saving to envisage a environmentally friendly Internet of the future.
Prospective authors are invited to submit original and unpublished
technical papers on the following research topics, but not limited to:
o Cooperative communications
o Cognitive Radio networks
o Software Defined Radio approaches
o Short-Range Communications
o Energy Efficient Radio Resource Management and Routing

o P2P Multimedia for autonomic wireless infrastructures.
o Energy efficient Reconfigurable Radio Transceivers
o Network Coding
o Internet of things
o Cross-layer and Cross-System optimization strategies for
wireless multimedia
o User and device location in next generation networks.
o Security mechanisms and schemes in Cooperative networks
o Resource and Mobility Management in Cooperative Network.

Subject and Purpose of the Workshop
We lately witness a tremendous development in the wireless sensor
networking (WSN), which make it possible to
monitor, unobtrusively and for long periods of time the physical
environment and to collect the relevant data. For
many applications, the sensor networks cannot operate in complete
isolation. There must be a way enabling a
monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced
by the sensor network, and even to
interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read
the sensed value instantaneously, fix some
inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By
connecting the sensor network to an existing
network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet,
mobile smart networks, and notably the
global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be
straightforward. However, many questions
need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such
interconnection become effective. Suitability of IP
standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture.
Is it more effective to use fixed gateways?
Or is it better to employ a dynamic ad hoc mode where all nodes (or
several nodes) cooperatively and alternatively
act as gateways. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks
new vulnerabilities will take place. An
intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore,
but it might remotely launch attacks.
Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered.
Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also
important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. This
workshop is a forum for researchers,
academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the
interconnection of wireless sensor networks,
and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions.
Topics
Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to the
interconnection and integration of WSN to other
networks, including but not limited to:
- Interconnection architecture aspects
- Authentication and security issues
- Vulnerability, protection, and fault-tolerance of WSN
- Quality of Service (QoS) issues in WSN-based integrated networks
- Information processing
- Routing protocols for cross networks
- Network and transport layer protocols for cross networks
- Testbeds for integrated networks
- Middlewares
- Integrated applications and services for cross networks
- Sensor tasking, control, and actuation
- Distributed query processing
- Integration of Body area networks to WLAN and beyond
- In-network processing and aggregation
- Connectivity & longevity
- Location and time services
- Integration of sensor networks and web-based services

sign an IEEE copyright release form and present their paper at the
conference. The Proceedings of the conference will be published by the
IEEE Communication Society and distributed at the conference; copies
of the Proceedings will also be available for sale after the conference.
All paper submissions will be handled electronically in EDAS via the
INFOCOM 2011 submission page. Authors should prepare a Portable
Document Format (PDF) version of their full paper. Papers should be no
longer than 9 pages, size 10 font or greater, and compliant with the
margin requirement. Please refer to the INFOCOM manuscript preparation
page for details. Manuscripts that are not compliant with the
requirements may be declined without review.
The deadline for registering the title and the abstract of the paper
with our electronic submission system is July 23, 2010, and the
deadline for submitting the actual paper is July 30, 2010. All
deadlines are 11:59PM PDT and are firm (i.e., no deadline extension
will be made).
All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through
peer reviewing, where TPC members referee all papers and hold a TPC
meeting to determine the set of accepted papers. A subset of the
accepted papers will be invited to IEEE INFOCOM Mini-conferences and
considered for inclusion in the IEEE INFOCOM Proceedings, in the event
that the paper cannot be included in the main conference program.

ICNP, the IEEE International Conference on Network Protocols, is the premier
conference covering all aspects of network protocols, including design,
analysis, specification, verification, implementation, and performance. ICNP
2010, the 18th ICNP, will be held in Kyoto, Japan, on October 5-8, 2010.
Papers with significant research contributions to the field of network
protocols are solicited for submission. Papers cannot be previously
published nor under review by another conference or journal. Papers
containing plagiarized material will be subject to the IEEE plagiarism
policy and will be rejected without review. Topics of interest include, but
are not limited to:
- Protocol design, implementation, testing, and analysis

Papers must deal specifically with protocols. Papers on general networking
where protocols are only a secondary focus will be considered only if they
are of exceptional quality. ICNP will select an accepted full paper for the
best paper award.
*ICNP 2010 will use a double-blind review process. The identity of authors
and referees will not be revealed to each other. To ensure blind reviewing,
author names and affiliations should not appear in the paper; bibliographic
references should be made in such a way as to preserve author
anonymity.*Papers should adhere to the IEEE Computer Society format
and should not
exceed 10 pages. The font size should be no smaller than 10 pt. At lease one
author of an accepted paper is expected to register for the conference and
