The 4th IEEE workshop on performance modeling and evaluation in computer
and telecommunication networks (PMECT 2010)
--- Call for paper ---
There is a growing interest recently in the convergence of wired
networks and wireless access systems and networks. Development in
wireless communication technologies and mobile networks has posed
various challenges to researchers in the field of performance modeling.
These challenges require effective performance evaluation tools,
techniques and methodologies to design new protocols and robust
solutions before a global and wide-scale integrated broadband
infrastructure of convergent multi-service networks can be established
towards the next generation of networks with efficient support of a wide
range of applications.
The purpose of this workshop is to provide an international forum for
researchers and industry practitioners to present their state-of-art
research on performance modeling and evaluation studies in all aspects
of computer and telecommunication networks and to exchange ideas and
explore new avenues of collaborations.
Scope
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Energy model of wireless protocols
Performance modeling of TCP/IP, Wireless TCP, wireless IP computer
networks
Performance modeling and analysis of reliability, Quality of Service
(QoS)and performance guarantees
Performance-oriented design and analysis methods
Performance measurements in real testbed
Performance thread-off in admission control and congestion control

---call for paper---
The traditional centralized wireless and mobile networks are mainly
based on single-hop architecture and rely on fixed infrastructure such
as base stations or access points. The proliferation and deployment of
radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, Wireless
PANs, ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks with distinguishing
characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power, mobility, and
prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous access
across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous
environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon
the application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs)
available. The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on
the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but
introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The
design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop
wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks
continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack.
Therefore, it is necessary to aim at heterogeneous architectures and
services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop as
well as multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together the research community in
order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the
latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous
multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and
previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and
application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks.

*Summary*
-------------------------
Recent years have witnessed the flourish of multimedia data on the
Internet. To facilitate humans in accessing and managing the explosively
growing multimedia content, extensive research efforts have been
dedicated to automatic multimedia analysis and processing in the last
decades, such as categorization, annotation and indexing. However,
despite great advances in recent years, several key difficulties still
exist, the most important of which is the semantic gap in multimedia
modeling. It is evident from recent results that most of the semantic
gap problems cannot be solved automatically within the near future and
without additional information or resources. On the other hand, we have
witnessed the power of collective human efforts in the Web 2.0 era in
providing high-quality tags and comments to large amounts of images and
videos in sites such as Flickr and YouTube. In fact, a lot more can be
accomplished through simple online games such as the ESP. Hence, more
and more researchers believe that a possible approach to addressing the
semantic gap problem is to incorporate the efforts of humans into the
computational process, i.e., by combining human intelligence and
automated computer processing to jointly tackle the problems in a
collaborative manner. The past decade has witnessed the increase of such
efforts, such as relevance feedback in content-based image retrieval,
active learning in multimedia modeling, the interactive video search
evaluation task in TRECVID, new search and browsing interfaces in
VideoOlympics to facilitate humans’ interaction, and the recent human
computation efforts such as the ESP game on Google image search website.
This special issue aims to bring together the range of research efforts
in interactive multimedia computing. The goals of this special issue are
threefold: (1) to introduce novel research work and systems in this
area; (2) to survey the progress of this direction in the past years;
and (3) to discuss new technologies that will be potentially impactful
(primary results are needed). The submitted papers will be peer reviewed
and selected based on their quality and relevance to the theme of this
special issue.

Call for papers
The 2nd International Workshop on Cognitive Radio Network (CRNet 2010)
August 25, 2010 - Beijing, China
http://crnet.mobi
The 2nd International Workshop on Cognitive Radio Network (CRNet 2010)
will be held in conjunction with CHINACOM 2010 in Beijing, China, August
25-27, 2010. Accepted and presented papers will be included in the
conference Proceedings and IEEE Xplore. High quality accepted and
presented papers will be indexed by EI. (pending)
Cognitive radio is an emerging technology in wireless access, aimed at
vastly improving the way radio spectrum is utilized. CRNet 2010 is
devoted to the development of cognitive radio-based transmission and
networking technologies in wireless communications. The workshop
provides a forum for discussion of all these developments among
engineers, scientists and researchers. The attribution of cognition in
the wireless world is one of the most exciting areas in modern
telecommunications. As an emerging technology in wireless access,
cognitive radio is aimed at vastly improving the way radio spectrum is
utilized. The motivation for cognitive radio stems from various
measurements of spectrum utilization, which generally show that spectrum
is under-utilized. This means that there are many "holes" in the radio
spectrum that could be exploited by the secondary users. The secondary
user must exploit these spectrum opportunities without causing harmful
degradation to the primary system
. The research challenges in this area include devising methods for
efficient spectrum pooling and sensing, for capacity-approaching
transmission scheme, for interference management and dynamic resource
allocation, and for cross-layer design of protocols, as well as circuits
and architectures meeting the often challenging requirements.
The objective of this workshop is to bring together original,
high-quality contributions that present new techniques, concepts and
analyses in the area of cognitive radio algorithms and system design.
Specific topics of the conference include (but not limited to):
* Spectrum sensing and pooling
* Network design and optimization
* Resource management
* Cross-layer design
* Channel modeling and transmission scheme
* Collaborative communications
* Beamforming and multicast methods

Call for Papers
A Special Issue of Ad Hoc Networks Journal on
Recent Advances in Large Scale and Sustainable Wireless Sensor Networks
The recent advances in embedded software/hardware design have enabled
large-scale and
cost-effective deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Such a
network consists
of many small sensor nodes with sensing, computing, communicating, and
control
capabilities. The wireless sensor networks have a broad spectrum
applications ranging
from wild life monitoring, battlefield surveillance, to border control
and disaster
relief, and have attracted significant interests from both academy and
industry.
A wireless sensor node generally has limited communication and
computation capabilities,
as well as severely-constrained power supplies, and the networks often
operate in harsh
unattended environments. Successful design and deployment of wireless
sensor networks
thus call for technology advances and integrations in diverse fields,
including
embedded hardware design, data processing, and wireless communications
and networking
across all layers.
One of the key challenges in WSNs is to develop sustainable and scalable
system
that achieves longer network lifetime. Nodes capable of harvesting
environmental energy
have been designed and used in many WSN systems. The benefits of
using rechargeable
batteries by harvesting environmental energy to prolong sensor
network lifetime have
been well recognized.
This special issue aims to summarize the latest development of
hardware and software for
WSNs, as well as deployment experiences. Topics of interest include
but are not limited to:
? Novel transport, network, and MAC protocol design
? Smart in-network processing and control
? Disruption-tolerant/opportunistic mobile sensor networking
? Cross layer design and optimization, duty cycle management
? Channel and network modeling and performance evaluation
? Measurements and experience from experimental systems and test-beds
? New and novel methods for harvesting environment energy
? Hardware design
? Novel applications and architectures
We solicit original unpublished research papers only. Papers
previously published in
conference/workshop proceedings can be considered, but should be
substantially extended.
