ACM MobiHoc Student Demo Competition
====================================
Proposals for research demonstrations and exhibits are strongly
solicited. Research demonstrations should be innovate research
prototypes that show new research related to the practice of mobile
computing or wireless and mobile networking. Areas of interest include,
but are not limited to:
* Architectures, protocols, and algorithms to cope with mobility,
limited bandwidth, limited power and/or intermittent connectivity
* Applications and services for mobile users
* Fundamental aspects of mobile computing and wireless networking
* Integration and interworking of wired and wireless networks
* Location-dependent applications and protocols
* Modeling, measurement and simulation aspects of mobile networks
* Mobile ad hoc and sensor networks
* Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and
networking
* Performance of mobile and wireless networks and systems
* Security, privacy, and fault-tolerance of mobile/wireless systems
* Wireless access technologies for mobile nodes (e.g., multi-radio
and mesh systems, personal area networks)
* Implementations and experimental mobile systems
Submissions should be in PDF format and no longer than two pages. It
should include a description of the demonstration, including both a 250
word abstract and a description of the underlying research contributions
being demonstrated. It should also include a URL with any extra information.
Proposals should be sent by email to: Suman Banerjee with the subject
"MobiCom/MobiHoc Research Demo Submission". All submissions will be
acknowledged.
Students
--------
If you have a cool demo of your ideas, come and showcase it in
Mobicom/Mobihoc this year in the Student demo competition and win the
best demo awards!
This year all research demo submissions with a student lead will be
automatically entered into a Student Research Demo competition. The goal
of this competition is to encourage students to build systems and
prototypes validating their research results, and through the demo, make
it more accessible to the wider community. During Mobicom/MobiHoc, all
these demos will be judged by an evaluation committee and cash awards
will be given to the two best demonstrations. Demos will primarily be
judged on originality, execution, and illustration of the core research
ideas.
Submission Instructions
-----------------------
Submit a summary of the proposed demo (maximum of 3 pages, including
figures if needed) to the Research Demo Chair Suman Banerjee,
sumancs.wisc.edu.

COMPUTER NETWORKS JOURNAL (ELSEVIER)
Special Issue on
WIRELESS MULTIMEDIA SENSOR NETWORKS
*EXTENDED* Submission deadline: July 30, 2007
_____________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have recently been the focus of a
significant amount of attention and effort of the research community.
The main motivation has been to address the challenges posed by the
WSN paradigm, i.e., limited node power, processing, and communication
capabilities, dense network deployment, multi-hop communications, and
heterogeneous application-specific requirements. The vast majority of
these studies applies to conventional WSN applications which need
reliable and efficient communication of scalar event features and
sensor data such as temperature, pressure, humidity.
With the availability of low-cost small-scale imaging sensors, CMOS
cameras, microphones, which may ubiquitously capture multimedia
content from the field, Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSN)
have been proposed and drawn the immediate attention of the research
community. WMSN applications, e.g., multimedia surveillance networks,
target tracking, environmental monitoring, and traffic management
systems, require effective harvesting and communication of event
features in the form of multimedia such as audio, image, and video.
To this end, additional challenges for energy-efficient multimedia
processing and communication in WMSN, i.e., heterogeneous multimedia
reliability definitions, tight QoS expectations, and high bandwidth
demands, must be addressed as well.
This special issue solicits papers describing the state-of-the-art,
reliable and efficient multimedia processing and delivery solutions
imperative for the realization of WMSN. Original contributions
(previously unpublished and not currently under review) are
solicited in areas including (but not limited to) the following:
* Novel WMSN architectures and applications
* Protocols for real-time, reliable multimedia streaming in WMSN
* Energy-efficient MAC, routing, and traffic management for WMSN
* Cross-layer design for effective communications in WMSN
* Low-bit rate and energy-efficient multimedia source coding for WMSN
* Joint multimedia processing and communication solutions for WMSN
* Distributed source coding and multimedia processing in WMSN
* Information fusion and multimedia aggregation in WMSN
* Group and cooperative communications for multimedia delivery in
sensor/actor networks
* WMSN capacity modeling and theoretical analysis
* Delay-tolerant networking for WMSN
* Topology control, localization, synchronization, and mobility
* Physical layer technologies for efficient WMSN
* Secure multimedia communications in WMSN
* Experimental and testbed studies of WMSN

Hindawi Journal of Advances in Multimedia
(http://hindawi.com/journals/am/si/comc.html)
Special issue on "Collaboration and Optimization for Multimedia
Communications"
===============================================================================
The advances of internet and wireless access technologies have opened up
new opportunities to serve high quality, on-demand multimedia
applications. Applications like mobile TV, IPTV, on-demand streaming,
and peer-to-peer video sharing have fundamentally changed the content
distribution landscape, and have been accelerating a social and
engineering revolution in media distribution and consumption.
To achieve the ultimate goals of total freedom in self-expression,
seamless mobile access, and any time anywhere media consumption,
technology advances in various areas need to be reexamined and joined
utilized under a coherent optimization framework to reach an efficient
end-to-end media delivery solution. New models, metrics, and
methodologies in both source, and channel coding, distributed and
collaborative communications are needed to intelligently adapt the
multimedia content to suit user preferences, meet device and network
constraints, and achieve better communication resource utilization. The
source coding and adaptation decisions of media sources need to be
reconciled with the limited network resources, end-user preferences, and
resource allocation schemes at network nodes. Distributed optimization
schemes like pricing and game theoretical approaches are needed to
improve resource allocation and management efficiency.
This special issue seeks original contributions of highquality papers
that report the recent advances in multimedia coding, adaptation, and
transmission approaches that support multiuser collaboration and
optimize the network performance for multimedia communications. Topics
of interest include but are not limited to:
* Source/channel coding/adaptation techniques for increasing the
elasticity of multimedia traffic
* Collaborative multicast schemes utilizing source and channel
diversity for efficient multimedia distribution
* Distributed resource allocation and management for multimedia
communication
* Network utility maximization based on collaborative multimedia
communication
* Pricing models for collaborative multimedia transmission
* Game theoretical models for multimedia contents interactions
Authors should follow the Advances in Multimedia manuscript format
described at the journal site http://www.hindawi.com/journals/am.

Scope
-----
Recent advances in the wireless communications and networking
technologies will significantly impact the design of automobiles to
make automobile operations safer and more efficient, and thereby,
result in significant progress in the evolution of Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS). The Dedicated Short Range Communications
(DSRC) band has been allocated in the USA at 5.9 GHz for vehicle-to-
roadside (V2R) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, while the
IEEE 802.11p working group is developing enhancements of 802.11
standards to support ITS, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs),
vehicular telematics, and infotainment applications. It is anticipated
that a single wireless access technology may not suit the needs of all
vehicular communication applications, but a heterogeneous wireless
networking platform needs to be developed and optimized. Numerous
exciting research challenges exist for designing wireless networking
protocols for vehicular communication applications. Significant
advancements in these research areas are expected in near future.
The objectives of this workshop are to discuss the challenges in
designing wireless networking protocols for vehicular networks and
ITS, different ITS applications and services based on wireless
communications and networking technologies, and present the recent
advances in these areas.
With the objective and a very timely topic, the workshop is expected
to attract lot of interest from the researchers in the area of
wireless communication networks as well as from ITS designers and
planners.
The technical issues which will be addressed in this workshop include
- Vehicular wireless communications applications and services for
ITS
- Vehicular telematics based on emerging wireless technologies
- Multimedia content distribution in vehicular networks
- Architectures for V2R communications
- Heterogeneous wireless network architecture for V2V and V2R
communications
- Physical, medium access control , radio link, and routing protocols
- Cross-layer wireless protocol analysis, design, and optimization for
vehicular networks
- Cognitive radio protocols for vehicular networks
- Security protocols for vehicular networks
- Privacy issues in vehicular networks
- Vehicular network management
- Performance modeling and simulation
- Field experiments and test-bed results
Accepted papers will be published in the ACM International Conference
Proceedings Series and will be made available in ACM Digital Library,
as well as indexed by EI and ISI Index.
