Call for Papers: IEEE Communications Magazine Feature Topic on
INFORMATION-CENTRIC NETWORKING
Information-Centric Networking (ICN) marks a fundamental shift in
communications and networking. ICN focuses on finding and transmitting
information to end users instead of connecting end hosts that exchange
information. The key concepts are expected to have a huge impact on the
familiar textbook protocol stack, in network architecture in general,
and will create new opportunities for all associated stakeholders
including equipment vendors, network operators, service and content
providers, and above all end-users.
Scope and Objectives
Information-centric networking is to succeed only if it can to provide
clearly superior solutions to well-known problems in the current
generation of all-IP networks and can be introduced to general usage
incrementally. We invite authors to consider the following aspects with
respect to information-centric networks:
* Naming & addressing: What breakthroughs in naming and addressing
will make ICN scalable when faced with a global network of billions of
devices and zettabytes of available content?
* Protocol stack: Can ICN deliver a neat and simple protocol stack?
* Network architecture: What does a ICN network architecture look
like?
* Management: What are the essential characteristics of a complete
management framework that is scalable, flexible, and suitable for ICN?
* Caching: New issues to be addressed such as buffer management and
caching policy.
* Energy efficiency: Will ICN pave the way to a holistic energy
efficient operation?
* Internet of Things (IoT): How does ICN scale in the scenarios
envisioned for the IoT and how does it compare with current IP-based IoT
solutions?
* Security: Can ICN foster the development of a more secure and
trusted global communications infrastructure?
* Which business models could foster a fair relationship between
content producers, content providers and service/network providers?
Submitted articles do not need to cover all these aspects but should
strive to clearly contrast the ICN approach with the current
TCP/IP-based state of affairs. Prospective authors should describe the
key concepts, design, implementation, and evaluation of ICN proposals.
Articles that demonstrate the feasibility of groundbreaking approaches
through testbed/experimental results are particularly welcome. We invite
authors to submit articles reporting original, previously unpublished
research work on information-centric networking. Authors can find
article guidelines at
http://dl.comsoc.org/ci1/info/cfp/cfpcommag0712.htm.
Submission Schedule
* Submission Deadline: November 1, 2011
* Notification of Acceptance: February 29, 2012
* Final Manuscript Due: May 1, 2012
* Publication Date: July 2012

Call for Papers
Special Issue on "Machine and Robotic Networking"
IEEE Network Magazine
===================================================
The advances in communication networking technologies have been very
successful in academia, industry and consumer markets. “Being connected”
becomes an essential part of our daily life. Recently, we have been also
observing that the communication distance between transmitters and
receivers shrinks in many commercial applications. This includes
sensor/RFID networks, WiFi and near field communication (NFC) devices.
Such shortened distance is mostly caused by the high volume of data
demand of users. One other reason is that the modern communications is
not any more for human-to-human (H2H) information exchange only but also
for machine-to-machine (M2M) or machine-to-human (M2H). The
inter-machine distance will be gradually decreasing in many upcoming
applications. This trend adds complexity to the communication protocols
with very high node density and unpredictable interference in particular
in wireless networks.
The machine in M2M or M2H refers to various devices from remote metering
modules to vehicles or small networked robots with communication
functions embedded. M2M applications and use cases currently under
consideration by ETSI, 3GPP, 3GPP2 and IEEE are mainly focused on
stationary nodes (machines) or at least control of node mobility is out
of scope of M2M applications. However, the controllable node mobility
willconstitute a core part of M2M communications. Robotic networks will
belong to this class of M2M, where the position of nodes can be changed
to meet the needs of M2M applications.
Independently, in the automatic control and robotics community, there
has been special interest in connecting multiple robots for effectively
achieving the common mission of a group of autonomous robots. This area
is known as networked robotics. The main background of this approach is
that connecting robots with less intelligence would be more beneficial
than a single isolated robot with full intelligence. In particular,
there have been a group of researchers focusing on the behaviours of
small animals to mimic their grouping patterns such as group navigation
and communications.
This special issue is dedicated to fundamentals and applications in the
machine and robotic networks. The main emphasis is to introduce and to
open new research horizon to the networking researchers. Those who are
currently investigating protocols for inter-machine data exchange or
designing a group of networked machines (including robots) are potential
authors for this special issue. The comprehensive survey and forecasting
of this inter-disciplinary area with deep insight on research challenges
and business opportunities are also seriously considered.
The special issue encourages authors to submit their papers on the
specific areas, which are not strictly limited to the followings, though:
· Networking protocol design for machine and robotic networks
· Distributed algorithm design for machine and robotic networks
· Resource management for machine and robotic networks
· Networked robots with special emphasis on networking and distributed
computing
· Capacity issues in machine and robotic networks
· Mobility issues in machine and robotic networks
· Cognitive machine and robotic networks
· Bio-inspired networking in robotics
· Design and application issues in M2M and networked robots
· Business models and use cases for M2M and networked robots
The interested authors are expected to submit their papers confirming to
the guidelines ofIEEENetwork,
http://dl.comsoc.org/livepubs/ni/info/authors.html according to the
following schedule:
All paper processing will be through an online system, which will be
announced later. In the mean time, you may contact the guest editors.
· Paper submissions: October 15, 2011

SCOPE
In the today's provision of network services, a rapid development of
many new technologies (like virtualization or cloud computing) and
applications (e.g., social networking) can be seen. They have a
considerable engineering, commercial and societal impact and pose
numerous challenges to designers. One class of issues is the continuous
offering of services in spite of various types of failures that are
everyday events in networks. The increasing complexity, the
participation of many different autonomous entities in the service
provision, the lack of information, coordinated actions as well as
governance makes this challenge increasingly difficult. In addition to a
design of reliable network segments, server clusters etc., new
technological issues like stability and failure management across
heterogeneous autonomous systems arise. They also involve novel fields
at the border of technology, business and society, like risk-awareness
or influence of public policy.
The goal of this issue is to present state of the art research
contributions that focus on the reliable network-based services (RNS)
provisioning. Contributions are invited from prospective authors with
interests in the indicated special issue topics and related areas of
application. All contributions should be of high quality, original,
unpublished, and not submitted for publication elsewhere. Topics of
interest include, but are not limited to:
- Network and service resilience:
+ reliability requirements and metrics for individual users, business,
and the society
+ service differentiation based on recovery methods
+ dependability of networked applications and network-based services
+ application and service-specific survivability techniques
- Commercial and societal context:
+ telecommunication networks as an element of critical national
infrastructures
+ network resilience combined with economics and business issues
+ risk and reliability in the Internet and enterprise networks
- Operational aspects:
+ resilience of multi-domain connections in the Internet
+ reliability of emerging technologies (e.g., network virtualization,
thin client architectures)
+ network dependability in cloud computing
+ interaction between fault management and traffic handling
- Theory and modeling
+ reliability analysis
+ methods and theory for survivable networks and systems
+ simulation techniques for network and service resilience

* Special Issue of Ad Hoc Networks on Theory, Algorithms and
Applications of Wireless Networked Robotics*
_____________________________________________
--------------
*Overview:*
--------------
Teams of heterogeneous devices pursuing a common objective are
envisioned to be a viable and effective solution for many civil,
societal and military applications. A large body of research, from
various perspectives, have been produced by both the ad hoc networking
and the robotics research communities to achieve self-organization and
coordination of groups of sensors, actuators, robots or drones toward
target-oriented missions. But, the convergence of objectives and
methodologies of the two disciplines is still open for further
significant research efforts and challenging problems remain. The
research on ad hoc networks, autonomic networks, cyber physical
systems, self-organizing networks and machine-to-machine
communications has involved issues, concepts and challenges that are
useful for characterizing the pathway toward the formalization of the
theory and the definition of algorithms for Wireless Networked
Robotics (WNR).
WNR brings together the physical control of the devices along with
their communication capabilities and it includes that so far have been
either neglected or only partially explored by the ad hoc networking
and the robotics research communities.
In WNR some or all of the devices are expected to have memory and
reasoning capabilities, which allow them to use the input coming from
other devices, the environment and their history to select the best
behaviour to assume according to mission objectives. Therefore,
machine learning and cognitive networks concepts and algorithms would
greatly contribute to WNR theory and algorithms.
This special issue aims to bring together state-of-the-art
contributions on the theory, algorithms and applications of wireless
networked robotics. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited
in all aspects of this discipline.
In particular, the topic of interest includes but is not limited to
- algorithm and theory of cooperation and coordination in WNR
modelization, simulation and evaluation of coordination and
cooperation schemes in WNR
- communication and motion aware protocols for WNR
- impact and optimization of network performance through physical and
communication control of the devices
- bio-inspired algorithms for cooperation and coordination in WNR
self-organization in WNR
- swarm intelligence and swarm robotics algorithms in WNR use cases
and applications for WNR

Call for Papers
for a Special Issue of IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed
Systems (TPDS)
on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)
IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS) is seeking
original
manuscripts for special Issue on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), scheduled
to be
published in the September issue of 2012. Although significant advances
have been
achieved over the last decades in several fields of science and
engineering, and especially
in the areas of distributed computing, sensing, data collection and
internet-connection of
large scale object networks, it is mainly the coordination and tight
link between
computational, virtual and physical resources that will drive the
potential of having a
pervasive effect in the citizens everyday life,
satisfying various needs and also creating new
opportunities for the introduction of services that will enhance the
Quality of Life of the
society as a whole. Research advances in cyber-physical systems promise
to transform
our world with systems that will far exceed those of today in terms of:
effectiveness,
adaptability, autonomicity, energy efficiency, precision, reliability,
safety, usability,
scalability, stability and user-centric applicability. Moreover,
recently the Sensor Web
concept came into foreground, aiming at combining distributed sensing
with the ubiquitous
connectivity and accessibility of the web, therefore facilitating the
close interaction of digital
world with physical world.
Cyber-physical systems find direct applicability in a wide range of
areas and disciplines,
including for instance (but not limited to):
a) Smart Grid technologies:
that aim at facilitating a
reliable and efficient delivery of electricity to consumers using
two-way digital communications and security technologies, which allows
utility providers
and consumers to constantly monitor and control the delivery network as
well as electricity
consumption for the purpose of energy saving, cost reduction, and
reliability enhancement;
b) Wireless sensing, monitoring and networking:
to enable distributed monitoring systems of numerous smart sensors and
actuators,
mobile devices, RFIDs, robots etc., which revolutionize a variety of
application areas with
unprecedented density, fidelity, and scalability of environment
instrumentation;
c) Vehicular cyber-physical systems and intelligent transportation systems:
that integrate computing, communication, and storage capabilities with
monitoring and
control of vehicles in the physical world to deal with the grand
challenges of safe, green,
and efficient transportation.
The technical challenges are significant, and of high research and
practical importance,
mainly stemming from the fact that traditionally different groups of
scientists deal with this
setting without much interaction, using disjoint sets of techniques.
Towards merging the
two main and different features of those systems, that of
information-centric character and
node-centric physical world connectivity, well-defined analytical
models, methodologies and
experimental validations are required of how to build such systems
capable of coping with
the entire chain of operations and orchestrating the various parts
together in a flexible,
efficient and economic way. Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to the following:
* Architectural framework for distributed CPS
* Resource Management in large scale CPS
* Smart Grid Technologies
* Security, privacy, scalability, and reliability
issues
* Design and cross-layer optimizations
* Vehicular CPS and intelligent transportation systems
* Novel monitoring applications with sensors, actuators, smart phones,
robots, and other wireless mobile devices
* Distributed and scalable monitoring systems
*
Evaluations and filed trials of CPS and solutions

Important Dates:
* September 26, 2011: Submission Deadline
* November 1, 2011: Notification Date
We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the 3rd Multimedia Systems (MMSys) Conference to be held Feb. 22-24, 2012 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA. The Multimedia Systems conference provides a forum for researchers, engineers, and scientist to present and share their latest research findings in multimedia systems. While research about specific aspects of multimedia systems is regularly published in the various proceedings and transactions of the networking, operating system, real-time system, and database communities, MMSys aims to cut across these domains in the context of multimedia data types. This provides a unique opportunity to view the intersections and interplay of the various approaches and solutions developed across these domains to deal with multimedia data types. Furthermore, MMSys provides an avenue for communicating research that addresses multimedia systems holistically.
For MMSys 2011, a Special Session on Modern Media Transport: DASH was organized. It was very successful in terms of attendance, presentations and discussions. The match of interests between special session and main conference was very satisfying, and MMT DASH will be fully integrated into the main MMSys conference from 2012. Highly appreciated program points such as the data set track of MMSys 2011 will of course also return for MMSys 2012.
You can also listen to keynotes by Deepak S. Turaga from IBM and Leonidas Kontothanassis from Google.
MMSys 2012 will also host the Mobile Video Workshop (MoVid), which has its own web pages at http://www.eecs.ucf.edu/movid/

****************************************************************************************************
Purpose of this workshop
The ubiquitous nature of wireless networks has spawned many
interesting applications that were unimagined hitherto. It has also
brought many challenges for the communication and networking community
to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable
of providing many services that required several devices before. For
example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access,
still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in
device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless
hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With
increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we
have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body
Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied
meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other
hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically.
These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence
on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as
the future communication vehicle.
Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we
seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home
networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one
platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication
networks and the Internet of Your Things. The idea is to enable
continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a
user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an
unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be
they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with
their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is
equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent
concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly
person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a
user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It
is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can
co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation.
Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users
with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in
various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed
user-friendliness to many services of today.
There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication
network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them
arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way
with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable
topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices,
and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies.
Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures,
protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of
addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the
self-organization of the network, the localization of the
devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the
offering of context aware services and service management. Many of
these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc
networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be
reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict
requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models,
usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness,
availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust.
Scope of the submission
We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to
the problems that are outlined above towards realization of a
Personalized Network. We have identified the following major topics
under which we try to categorize the submissions. However, we will
consider any other original, interesting, and imaginative ideas and
thoughts towards meeting this goal of a Personalized Network.
- Architectural framework of personalized networks
- Personalized network applications
- Personal communications in the next generation Internet
- Personalized networks for rural areas
- Context awareness
- Internet of (your) things technologies
- Resource, service and context discovery
- Self-organization and adaptation
- Addressing and routing
- Interworking between PANs, ad hoc networks, etc, and
infrastructure-based heterogeneous networks
- Mobility of personalized networks
- Personalization of virtual resources
- Cooperative and collaborative methods for personalized networks
- Security, privacy and anonymity
- Zero configuration methods and other enablers for ease-of-use
- Dependability
- Application-driven communication substrates
- Personalized networks for group oriented networking
- New QoS concepts in personalized networks
- QoS across heterogeneous Networks and Devices
- Mapping of functional requirements to physical devices and resources
- Modeling and simulation of personalized networks
- P2P paradigm in personalized networks
- Innovative applications or prototypes and demonstrations of such
person centric applications are equally valued
Why should you participate in this workshop?
Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, yet
very current, in the field of communications. It attracts researchers
from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop is an ideal
platform to share a vision of where we are heading, interact, and
strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers and
practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final
program would consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer
reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new
ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field. Submissions
of shorter versions of full papers that can be submitted to other
conferences/journal in the near future are discouraged.
Submission Instructions
Submitted papers must represent original material that is not
currently under review in any other conference or journal, and has not
been previously published. Paper length should not exceed five-page
technical paper manuscript.
Papers should be submitted in PDF to the EDAS paper submission website
- http://edas.info/N11047 The first sheet should show the title of the
paper, the author(s) name(s) and affiliation(s), and the address
(including e-mail, telephone, and fax) to which the correspondence
should be sent. All accepted papers will be published in the
conference proceedings. At least one author of accepted papers is
required to register at the full registration rate.
