> Call for Papers: IEEE Communications Magazine Feature Topic on
> INFORMATION-CENTRIC NETWORKING
>
> Information-Centric Networking (ICN) marks a fundamental shift in
> communications and networking. ICN focuses on finding and transmitting
> information to end users instead of connecting end hosts that exchange
> information. The key concepts are expected to have a huge impact on the
> familiar textbook protocol stack, in network architecture in general,
> and will create new opportunities for all associated stakeholders
> including equipment vendors, network operators, service and content
> providers, and above all end-users.
>
> Scope and Objectives
> Information-centric networking is to succeed only if it can to provide
> clearly superior solutions to well-known problems in the current
> generation of all-IP networks and can be introduced to general usage
> incrementally. We invite authors to consider the following aspects with
> respect to information-centric networks:
> * Naming & addressing: What breakthroughs in naming and addressing
> will make ICN scalable when faced with a global network of billions of
> devices and zettabytes of available content?
> * Protocol stack: Can ICN deliver a neat and simple protocol stack?
> * Network architecture: What does a ICN network architecture look
> like?
> * Management: What are the essential characteristics of a complete
> management framework that is scalable, flexible, and suitable for ICN?
> * Caching: New issues to be addressed such as buffer management and
> caching policy.
> * Energy efficiency: Will ICN pave the way to a holistic energy
> efficient operation?
> * Internet of Things (IoT): How does ICN scale in the scenarios
> envisioned for the IoT and how does it compare with current IP-based IoT
> solutions?
> * Security: Can ICN foster the development of a more secure and
> trusted global communications infrastructure?
> * Which business models could foster a fair relationship between
> content producers, content providers and service/network providers?
>
> Submitted articles do not need to cover all these aspects but should
> strive to clearly contrast the ICN approach with the current
> TCP/IP-based state of affairs. Prospective authors should describe the
> key concepts, design, implementation, and evaluation of ICN proposals.
> Articles that demonstrate the feasibility of groundbreaking approaches
> through testbed/experimental results are particularly welcome. We invite
> authors to submit articles reporting original, previously unpublished
> research work on information-centric networking. Authors can find
> article guidelines at
> http://dl.comsoc.org/ci1/info/cfp/cfpcommag0712.htm.
>
> Submission Schedule
> * Submission Deadline: November 1, 2011
> * Notification of Acceptance: February 29, 2012
> * Final Manuscript Due: May 1, 2012
> * Publication Date: July 2012

> Vehicular communication for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) plays
> an increasingly important role in people’s lives since it provides safety as
> well as comfort for passengers and enables more efficient travel by
> providing timely information to operators of vehicles and concerned
> authorities. As a result, there will be a strong demand for wireless
> communications and networking to provide information as well as onboard
> entertainment services to passengers and driver. Vehicular communication is
> expected to implement a variety of wired and wireless technologies for
> Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Roadside (V2R) communications. In
> Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) for V2V systems, communication may
> experience serious deterioration due to the lack of accurate channel state
> information and advanced radio-resource-allocation schemes to assign
> wireless resources to high-speed vehicles. Moreover, communication among
> high-speed vehicles through cellular communication networks causes frequent
> handovers and drop-offs resulting in degradation in overall system

Wireless Communications
Information Infrastructure
Scope:
The field of ad hoc, sensor and mesh networking is reemerging amid
unprecedented growth in the scale and diversity of computer networking. A
Mobile ad hoc network (Manet) is a system of wireless mobile nodes
dynamically self organizing in arbitrary and temporary network topologies.
People and vehicles can thus be internetworked in areas without a
pre-existing communication infrastructure, or when the use of such
infrastructure requires wireless extension. Therefore, such networks are
designed to operate in widely varying environments, from military networks
(with hundreds of nodes) to low-power sensor networks and other embedded
systems. Dynamic topologies, Bandwidth constraints, Energy-constrained
operations, Wireless vulnerabilities, and limited physical security are
among the characteristics that differentiate Mobile ad hoc networks from
fixed multihop networks.
This symposium aims at providing a forum for sharing ideas among
researchers and practitioners working on state-of-the-art solutions to the
challenges above. We are seeking papers that describe original and
unpublished contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc, sensor and
mesh networks.

CALL FOR PAPERS
The key components of many pervasive systems and applications are already
deployed in the form of ubiquitous commercial products carried by humans.
Human mobility makes it possible for such key components to interact,
promoting cooperation and sharing of content, services and resources.
Smartphones, tablet PCs, and other personal devices act as mobile computing
elements able to gather information about the surrounding environment
according to the mobility of users. In other situations these devices
operate as mobile nodes of the computing and/or networking infrastructure,
where interaction and communication occur opportunistically.
The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the
achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive
applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role
in achieving the end goals.
Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of
human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing
prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems
are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues
is also encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human
mobility
- mobile phone sensing applications and systems
- opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between
- opportunistic computing
- pervasive systems with humans in the loop
- wearable sensing systems
- mobility models
- distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility
- impact of human mobility on wireless communication
- green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility
- mobility aware protocols
- opportunistic networking
PAPER SUBMISSION
Papers should contain original material and should not be previously
published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts
are limited to a maximum of 6 pages in IEEE conference format. Accepted
papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press in the combined
PerCom 2012 Workshops Proceedings and will appear on IEEE Xplore. At least
one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop
to present the paper. There is no workshop-only registration. An oral
presentation at the workshop is strictly required. Failure to present the
paper at the workshop will result in the withdrawal of the paper from
the proceedings as well as from IEEE Xplore. Paper submission will be
via EDAS (further details will be available on the workshop website).

IEEE Communications Magazine
Call for Papers
Network Testing Series
The objective of the Network Testing Series of IEEE Communications
Magazine is to provide a forum across the academia and the industry to
address the design and implementation defects unveiled by network
testing. In the industry, testing has been a mean to evaluate the design
and implementation of a system. But in the academia, a more common
practice is to evaluate a design by mathematical analysis or simulation
without actual implementations. A less common practice is to evaluate a
design by testing a partial implementation. That is, the academia
focuses more deeply on algorithmic design evaluation while the
industry has broader concerns on both algorithmic design issues and
system implementation issues. Often an optimized algorithmic component
could not guarantee the optimal operation of the whole system when other
components throttle the overall performance.
This series thus serves as a forum to bridge the gap, where the design
or implementation defects found by either community could be referred by
another community. The defects could be found in various dimensions of
testing. The type of testing could be functionality, performance,
conformance, interoperability and stability of the systems under
test (SUT) in the lab or in the field. The SUT could be black-box
without source code or binary code, grey-box with binary code or
interface, or white-box with source code. For grey-box or white-box
testing, profiling would help to identify and diagnose system
bottlenecks. For black-box testing, benchmarking devices of the same
class could reflect the state of the art. The SUT could range from
link-layer systems such as Ethernet, WLAN, WiMAX, 3G/4G cellular, and
xDSL, to mid-layer switches and routers, upper-layer systems such as
VoIP, SIP signaling, multimedia, network security, and consumer devices
such as handhelds. In summary, the Network Testing Series solicits
articles falling in, but not limited to, the following topics:
* Testing functionality, performance, conformance, interoperability,
and stability
* Testing systems and services of 10G Ethernet, Power over Ethernet,
WLAN, WiMAX, 3G/4G cellular, xDSL, switches, routers, IPv6, VoIP,
SIP signaling, storage area networks, network security, and
consumer handhelds
* Testing various layers of network devices including black-boxes,
white-boxes, and grey-boxes
* Benchmarking and profiling network systems and services
* Network lab testing and field testing
* Designing network test methodologies, test tools, and test beds
* Evaluating false positive and negative of network security
* Analyzing lab-found and customer-found defects
Submission
Prospective authors are strongly encouraged to contact the Series
Editors before writing and submitting an article in order to ensure that
the article will be appropriate for the Series. The submitted articles
should not be published elsewhere or be under review for any other
conference or journal. Articles should be tutorial yet rigorous in
nature. Mathematical equations should not be used (although some simple
equations may be allowed if permission is granted by the Series Editor
and the Editor-in-Chief). Articles should not exceed 4500 words. Figures
and tables should be limited to a combined total of six. Complete
guidelines for prospective authors can be found at:

Passive and Active Measurement (PAM) Conference
March 13-14, 2012 Vienna, Austria
Call for Papers
The PAM conference has in the past focused on research and practical
applications of network measurement and analysis techniques. However
this year PAM is broadening its scope based upon numerous trends in this
area. The scope of network measurements today goes well beyond the
traditional Layer-3 and encompasses measurements in any type of
networked, networked applications, content distribution networks, online
social networks, overlay networks, and more. Measurement technology is
needed at all layers of the stack: for power profiling of hardware
components, at the MAC/network/transport layers, as well as up the stack
for application profiling and even to collect user feedback.
Measurements technologies are being designed for the digital home,
residential access networks, wireless and mobile access, enterprise, ISP
and data center networks. In recognition of these trends, PAM is
encouraging submission on a broad set of topics. We aim to understand
the role that measurement techniques can play in networked environments
and applications, across different layers, and how they can serve as
critical building blocks for broader measurement needs. At the same
time, PAM also continues with its original goal, to expand the
techniques, tools and practical uses of network measurement technology.
PAM seeks to bring together both the research and operation communities,
and encourages submission of early stage research.
Original papers are invited, but not limited to, the following topics:
§ Passive and Active Measurement Tools: Techniques, Design and
Experience
§ Characterization studies of network usage and networked applications
§ Measurements of social networks, game networks and networked
services at large.
